“Perseverance is not a long race; it is many short races one after another.” — Walter Elliot Known as the “Turbaned Torpedo,” marathon runner Fauja Singh retired from racing in February 2013 . . . at the age of 101. Singh began running at 89, and in 2011, he became the first man ever to complete a full marathon at the age of 100. The Whole Bushel Triflingly few of us, even in our youth, have the athletic ability to run a full 26.2-mile marathon, a feat roughly equal to sprinting from one end of Manhattan and back again. Even walking that distance would test most peoples’ endurance. In 2011, Briton Fauja Singh did what most of us could not. He ran the entire 26.2-mile Toronto Waterfront Marathon. He finished in 8:25:16, an unenviable time given the fact that world’s most elite runners can finish a marathon in just over two hours. The difference between Fauja and the other runners? He was 100 years old at the time. Singh, known by fans as the “Turbaned Torpedo,” has set numerous records and completed his first full 26.2-mile marathon at the age of 93. He is believed to be the oldest man ever to complete a marathon. In 1994, Fauja witnessed the grisly decapitation of his son in a farming accident and began running as a way of dealing with his grief. He claims that his longevity is the result of a simple vegetarian diet, abstaining from smoking, alcohol, and fried foods, and keeping a positive outlook, claiming “I go to bed early taking the name of my Rabba (God) as I don’t want all those negative thoughts crossing my mind.” Despite his accomplishments,The Guinness Book of World Recordsrefuses to honor Fauja Singh as the oldest marathon runner as his age cannot be independently verified by a birth certificate. He has been able to produce a passport which lists his birth date as April 1, 1911, but the government of India did not keep birth records at the time. In 2004, Fauja carried the Olympic Torch at the Athens Olympics and again in 2012 at the London Olympics. In February 2013, he officially retired after completing a 10K race in Hong Kong at the ripe old age of 101. When asked how he approached a marathon, Singh claimed, “The first 20 miles are not difficult. As for the last six miles, I run while talking to God.”

Scientists have discovered how one of the world's smallest frogs is able to hear with its mouth. The tiny, earless Gardiner's frog was assumed to be deaf. But this study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciencesrevealed that it uses its mouth cavity to convey sound signals to its brain. The discovery solves the mystery of why the earless frog produces loud, high-pitched squeaks. The diminutive frogs, which live in the forests of the Seychelles, have no middle ear region at all, meaning they have no resonating eardrum. Researchers had therefore assumed that the animals hadno way to amplify and transmit sound waves from the environment into the inner ear and, via nerve cells, to thebrain. The Gardiner's frog is one of the world's smallest But this research revealed that the species defied those assumptions. The scientists made recordings of the frogs' calls and played them back to wild frogs in order to observe their behaviour. Justin Gerlach from the Nature Protection Trust of Seychellesand a member of the research team, explained that the frog's call was "one of the characteristic noises in the forest". "It's a very loud high-pitched squeak," he told BBC News. The playback experiments showed that the frogs were able to hear these squeaks. "If you play the call, they respond," explained Dr Gerlach. "Either they change position - they may move to face where the call is coming from - or quite often they will call in response." Lead researcher Renaud Boistel from the French National Centre for Scientific Research added: "It's very funny actually; [the frogs would] even attack the loud speaker." Resonating mouth A mouth cavity and bone conduction allows [the] frogsto perceive sound without a middle ear Renaud Boistel, Bioacoustician The next step was to find out how the frogs were able to hear the sound. To investigate this, the team used highly sensitive X-ray imaging techniques at the European Synchrotron Research Facility (ESRF)in Grenoble. This allowed them to examine the frog's anatomy in fine detail and and work out which body parts might play the role of the middle ear - transmitting sound wave signals via nerves to the brain. The team produced simulations of how the frog's head responded to sound waves of the same frequency as the frog's high-pitched call. This confirmed that, at those frequencies, the frogs' mouth cavity resonated like the body of a guitar - amplifying the sound. Gardiner's frogs have also evolved much thinner and fewer layers of tissue between their mouth cavity and inner ear. This allows sound waves to be more effectively transmitted to the "labyrinth" of fluid in the frogs' head and then onto the brain via nerve cells. Dr Boistel said: "This combination of a [resonating] mouth cavity and bone conduction allows Gardiner's frogs to perceive sound effectively without use of a middle ear." He added that he hoped the discovery of this novel hearing mechanism could be applied to help certain types of human deafness.

A five-year-old boy from China has become the Guinness world record holder for the youngest person to pilot a plane. He Yide, nicknamed Duoduo, made a 35-minute flight in an ultralight aircraft across the Beijing Wildlife Park Aug 31, Chinese media reported Tuesday. Zhang Yonghui, the person in charge of the aviation club where Duoduo learned flying, said the distance of the flight was 30 km. He Liesheng, the boy’s father, said he wanted his son to become braver by flying a plane and also develop his curiosity and desire to explore, according to the Global Times. The boy earlier sparked a fury in 2012 when a video of his running half unclad in the snow went viral on the internet. The video was shot by his family in New York at minus 13 degrees Celsius. The boy has also sailed a yacht in an internationalcompetition and climbed the Fujiyama mountain inJapan during a rainstorm, the media reports said. Duoduo’s father was nicknamed “Eagle Dad” because of his strict parenting methods and has prompted debates over his style of parenting. “His education style is worth learning, but not every child is suitable for it,” the Global Times quoted Gu Li, the director of a learning research centre in Nanjing, as saying. Sun Yunxiao, deputy director of the China Youth and Children Research Centre, said if the boy hadencountered problems, it could have impacted hisentire life. “We should not force children to do what they are not able to do. Children can benefit more from playing with toys or mud than flying a plane,” he said.

Nairalanders, pls I am seeking your opinion on this issue. I was wondering if we really get to the point of 'I don't have a choice as a reason to carry out a misdeed or do people just play on others sentimentality to attract sympathy for their plight. An example is when a woman is told at her workplace to partake in a fraud (of which she will benefit from) and when she refuses, she is told her children will be killed. The fraud goes on and she is caught (this is hypothetical). When asked why she did it, she replies 'I didn't have a choice'. Is this really true? There are other cases like that even more sympathetic than this one. And u will hear people even defending the person with statements like; if u were in her shoes, wouldn't u do the same thing! |
Chynx: This is very correct...but how close are the intervals between pedestrian bridges? It has happened to me too. Also wanted to recharge my PHCN card. To cross took me about 25 minutes. |
A man has been caged in a tiny stone cell for 30 years by his own parents after displaying signs ofmental illness as a teenager. Dong Hai, 46, was locked up in the five square metre prison when his mother and father feared he might hurt someone. Dong Watou and his wife Xiao Hong, from Longhai, southeast China’s Fujian Province, built the stone shelter in their garden in 1983. They caged their then-16-year-old son after he began to show symptoms of mental health issues. The couple took their son to numerous hospitals in the province, but no one was able to help. The family spent all the savings in a year and had to suspend his treatment. They then made what they say was the the hardest decision in their life, to lock Hai away in their garden/ The parents, who are now both nearing 70, fear what will happen to Hai when they die.

Architectural wonders erected on the rooftops of skyscrapers seems to be the latest constructions trend in China. Just days after the scandal involving a mountain villa built on the roofof a Beijing apartment building, a microblogger from Shenzen discovered a traditional private temple located atop a similar residential building. According to several Chinese media reports, the mysterious temple constructed on the roof of a 21-storey luxury apartment building in the Nanfang district of Shenzen has been around forat least three years, yet nobody, not even the tenants know who it belongs to. The rooftop structure is surrounded by foliage, has glazed golden tiles and features traditional upturned eaves decorated with carvings of dragons and phoenixes. A fingerprint scanner, security cameras and dogs barking on the other side of a locked door prevent access to the temple, but neighbors say it’s often used for traditional Chinese religious practices, as indicated by the ashes of burned offerings that float down from the roof. The private temple, suspected to be yet another illegal rooftop structure, jeopardizes the structural integrity of the entirebuilding, but tenants say their complaints have so far landed on dead ears. “This kind of construction work is illegal. Shenzhen’s government should demolish it as soon as possible to set an example. Who is this guy that he thinks he can build his own temple on a public area? He’s just interested in his own private interests. It is arrogant,” a resident of Shenzen told The Nanfang newspaper. His views are shared by the majority of Chinese, especially after thepublic outrage caused by Beijing businessman Zhang Biqing, who built a lavish villa surrounded by fake mountain rock on top of a 26-storey residential building. Authorities have yet to identify the owner, and are still investigating, but an anonymous source told the South China Morning Post that the temple had possibly been constructed by the director of Nanshan district’s Residential Property Management Office, a man named Xiong. To the defense of local authorities, the mysterious temple is hard to identify from the ground, as it is surrounded by trees. Even some of the residential building’s tenants were oblivious to its existence until reading the recentnews reports.

The Christian Association of Nigeria (Women Wing) inAbuja said it would write a letter to the National Assembly to protest against underage girl child marriage being spearheaded by some lawmakers including Senator Ahmed Yerima. The National Chairperson of WOWICAN, Mrs. Oyinsola Onyin, said this after the association’s quarterly executive meeting in preparation for its convention scheduled for October in Owerri, the Imo State capital. She said Christian women and mothers in Nigeria would go naked to oppose the law should the lawmakers ignore the protest and enact a law that favours underage girl-child marriage. Asked what WOWICAN would do if the lawmakers vote in favour of underage girl child marriage, she said, “I pray that will not happen. But if it happens, look, don’t underrate anybody. If it happens, mothers will go naked. “No right thinking mother will support the marriage despite that it favours a few people in Nigeria.” |
While healing an ailing relationship is usually what we all want, sometimes it’s wise to know when it’s time to let go. Every marriage is different, but there are some universal truths. For example, if one or both partners refuse to put in the effort to save the marriage, it’ll never get fixed. Another factor is time: “The clock starts ticking on the end of a marriage as soon as one spouse puts the couple’s problems out in the open,” says Bryce Kaye, PhD, author ofThe Marriage First Aid Kit. “The more time that passes after that without any effort made, the lower the odds are that you’ll stay together.” Here are signs your marriage may be beyond repair. 1 .You’ve “uncoupled.” Couples whose marriages are over, or nearly over, have usually uncoupled, or disconnected from each other. If you’re no longer spending any time together, if one or both of you is spending all your time at work, with friends, online and if feels like a relief not to be with each other, it’s a sign that you’ve already disengaged from the marriage. 2 .One spouse refuses to try. There are a lot of damaging, seemingly insurmountable problems that some marriages encounter and rebound from, such as infidelity, the loss of a close family member and a long sexual drought. If one spouse repeatedly brings up an issue, asks for help and makes it clear that the marriage will not last unless they both commit to solving it, and the other spouse refuses to go along, the marriage is in trouble. One partner can’t do all the trying on his or her own. 3 .There’s a lack of respect in the relationship. One of the most important aspects of a healthy marriageis mutual respect. When that’s gone, when one partner consistently feels dismissed, rejected and condescendedto and the other partner doesn’t see it or refuses to talkthrough it, you’re in a bad place. Marriages that reach this place are toxic- you’re no longer civil, and all discourse is either attacking or defending.” 4 .You’re no longer a team. It may sound hokey, but it’s true. In healthily humming-along marriages, both partners work as a team on everything from parenting to running the household to supporting each other in career and personal ambitions. If you’ve both started moving in completely separate orbits, or if you’re not working together on day-to-day issues, it’s a sign of serious trouble. 5 .An unfaithful spouse keeps an ex-lover as a friend. Infidelity is an enormous hurdle for a marriage to overcome, but just ending the affair is not enough. For a marriage to fully get past one spouse’s adultery, the unfaithful half of the couple cannot maintain a “friendship” with the former lover. No matter what he orshe says about the innocence of such a relationship, nothing good can come out of it. 6.No compromising in terms of wants and needs. A major part of marriage involves trying to fulfill your partner’s needs while also making sure your own needs are met. It’s a lifelong dance, a give and take, and it requires constant communication. But if your partner continually refuses to listen to what you need (time, affection, sex/physical contact, help with children or chores), or refuses to share his own needs, you’re not in a good place. 7 .One spouse is a serial cheater. Some men-and stereotypically this is men-are just not cut out for marriage; they are unable to remain monogamous, even if they seemed to have wanted to get married. What’s worse, they manage to put the blame fortheir philandering and untrustworthiness on you, usually for being too jealous or controlling. After the kind of affair a couple can recover from, there are regrets, apologies, and a promise to put an end to it and seek counseling. Not so with the serial cheater; that’s a problem you can’t fix, and likely spells the end of your marriage. 8 .Lack of communicate with each other. No problem in a marriage can be solved without open, honest communication. If you’ve reached a point where all you ever talk about is mundane things, like who needs to buy milk, you’re in trouble. “Lack of personal, intimate exchange in a marriage is a very bad sign, especially if youare talking to others. |

Police Prosecutor, Simon Emmanuel, told an Abuja Chief Magistrates' Court on Friday how a 20-year-old woman, Juli Markus, stole the four-month-old baby during Sunday Service. The baby's father, Obadiah Idi, of the Kado area of Federal Capital Territory, reported the matter at the Life Camp Police Station on June 30.While they were attending a Sunday church service in Kado, Juli Markus deceived his 11- year-old daughter, Rebecca, who was holding the baby, and collected the baby from her. Emmanuel said the convict escaped with the baby to an unknown destination, but was found and arrested by the police. He said that during interrogation, the convict confessed to committing the crime, saying that she took the baby to Auta Balefi Town in Nasarawa State where she sold him to one Christiana Zaka.Mr. Emmanuel said that Ms. Zaka, the convict's accomplice, was later arrested and the baby, named Daniel, recovered from her. The Abuja Chief Magistrates' Court thus sentenced Juli Markus to five years imprisonment without an option of fine. The Chief Magistrate, Fati Tafida, said that the convict is guilty as charged. Her accomplice, 43-yrs old Ms. Zaka is now standing trial on a one count charge of receiving a stolen child. |
An eight-year-old boy who had reportedly just finished playing computer game Grand Theft Auto IVshot and killed his grandmother as she sat watching television. The child, from Slaughter, Louisiana, retrieved the family gun after finishing a session on the violent simulation and then shot the 90-year-old woman in the back of the head, US police said. The pensioner was confirmed dead at the mobile home, with detectives revealing the boy had told them he shot his grandmother by accident. Authorities said the evidence suggested the shooting was deliberate. ‘By accounts of relatives of the victim, as well as friends of the family, the victim and the juvenile had a normal, loving, relationship and even shared the same bedroom,’ a police statement read. ‘Although a motive for the shooting is unknown at this time investigators have learned that the juvenile suspect was playing a video game, Grand Theft Auto IV, just minutes before the homicide occurred.’ As the eight-year-old boy is below the age of ten he cannot be charged under Louisiana law because he is ‘exempt from criminal responsibility’. Grand Theft Auto IV, which is only allowed to be bought by people aged over 17 in the US, has been criticised for the amount of violence it contains. |

In true hero fashion, a young man thought nothing of his own safety as he delved into a fire to save a 16 month old baby in Makurdi. However, he is now suffering serious consequences as a result of that heroic act. Michael Anthony, 27, is now battling for his life at the intensive care unit of the BenueState University Teaching Hospital (BSUTH). The good Samaritan threw caution aside and jumped into ablazing inferno on Tuesday night to free the baby that was trapped in the flames. He successfully rescued the baby but not without sustaining some burns to his own body. Michael is now battling to remain alive after sustaining first and third degree burns in the process. Reportbelow: Writhing in excruciating pain when Weekly Trust visited him at the Intensive Care Unit, Ward 1, of the Benue State University Teaching Hospital (BSUTH), Michael summoned strength to explain how the incident happened at their residence at Owner Occupier Estate situated along Chief Abu King Shuluwa road. “I had just returned from work on the fateful day at about 9pm when we (my parents and siblings) started hearing the continued cry of a baby. Initially, we had thought that our neighbour was beating her child but when the cry was becoming unbearable for us, we all ran outsideour house, only to discover that our neighbour’s flat was on fire. “By this time, the entire sitting room was already up in flames. There was absolutely nothing anyone could do if the baby must be rescued, except to brave the odds. “I just couldn’t stand there doing nothing and wait till the baby dies. So, I tried to assist the little boy as I paved myway into the bedroom where he was and threw him out from the window”, he explained. Michael, an electrician said though he got badly burnt in hisbid to save the child, “I’m grateful however that the attempt was successful. I don’t in any way regret my actions”, he stressed. On the part of his 61-year-old father, Anthony Anthony, there is no cause for regret since his son was suffering for a good cause. He said, “I am very happy for what my son did. We all ran out of the house that fateful night but I did not know when Michael meandered his way into the burning apartment. “He was with us and other neighbours as we tried in vain tobreak through the window to rescue the child. The fire was such that had overtaken the parlour, which is the only exit and entrance into the apartment. Before I realized what was happening, my son was already inside the apartment. He rescued the child through the window but the space could not contain his frame for escape. “So, he had to stagger through the fire and eventually, God helped him out. I’m surprised how he found his way out but I give God praise in all things. That was how we immediately rushed him to the hospital,” he said. Anthony, a trader who had lived in Makurdi for the past 38years, appealed to both state and federal government as well as good spirited individuals to help Michael access quality treatment as the financial burden is gradually becoming unbearable for the family. Similarly, the victim has also appealed for kind hearted donations to cater for his hospital needs. He expressed joy that his action were premised on the word of God often preached by his pastor, adding that, “whatever the case, my joy and prayer is for us to make heaven at last”. Meanwhile, the fortunate baby’s mother, Mrs. Shiminenge Terfa, said that she had gone to a pharmacy shop within the area at about 8pm leaving her four children indoors when the incident occurred. She only later discovered that soon after her exit from the house, the entire building went up in flames with her children trapped in her apartment. She explained that while the other three children were promptly saved by neighbours, the little baby boy, Saanmoyol Terfa, was forgotten in the room which at the time was already engulfed with fire. However, the shrieking cry of the baby alerted the neighbours who were helpless about the situation as at thetime because the flames became too daring for anyone to contemplate an attempt to save the child. But Michael, according to her, a native of Enugu State, who just couldn’t bear the crying infant, braved his way into the burning fire and bundled out the baby. The young Igbo man, according to medical estimation, sustained a third degree burns for his act of bravery. He is now lying critically ill as doctors are battling to save his life, even as the baby he rescued has since been discharged from the same hospital. Michael’s elder brother Charles, who was not at home when the incident happened, commended his brother for the bravery and also appealed to government at all levels, corporate organisations including well meaning Nigerians to help his brother live by lending financial assistance for his treatment. Charles, however, commended the Benue State Commissioner for Water Resources, Conrad Wergba, who visited the hospital and extended financial help to his brother’s treatment. A doctor who declined to give his name noted that Michaelsustained mixed burns with first degree burns in some areas and third degree burns in other parts of his body. He assured that by divine intervention, coupled with adequate money for medication, the Good Samaritan’s life would be spared. At the time of visit, five medical personnel attending to the victim on his sick bed. One of them expressed gratitude that the young man who is now being referred to as, “angel Michael” within the hospital vicinity is responding to treatment. “Though, he sustained a first degree burns, he is responding to treatment. He is better now than when he first came in. We appeal to good people to help him financially in order to sustain treatment”, the personnel added. |
Apostle Michael Canty of The Truth Ministries Holiness Church recently angered an entire wedding party and might have damaged his new ministry’s reputation after he refused to allow a bride wed her husband on her wedding day because he felt her dress was too sexy. Lisa Washington said ‘she’s never been more embarrassed then Saturday’ when a local pastor refused to officiate and allow the bride to wed her husband on her wedding day in his facility. Both families were present and the food was waiting to be served at the bride’s aunt house. Family members flew and drove long distances to be present for the couples special day. Upset and frustrated, guest at the wedding practically ‘begged’ the leaders of the church to reconsider but to no avail, not abudge. The wedding scheduled Saturday, August 10th, was scheduled for 3pm. At 2pm, the pastor greeted the brideand groom when he noticed the bride’s dress. According to the bride’s mother, the pastor jokingly asked ‘where isthe other half of the dress?’ Not thinking anything of it, the family laughed it off and continued applying make-up to the bride. Around 2:30pm the pastor asked a leader ofthe church to ask the bride and the family about the other part of her dress. The bride informed the leader ‘this is it’. The leader reported the news to the pastor and then the pastor informed face-to-face the bride andgroom at separate times he could not perform the wedding with the bride in her selected dress. The pastor told the bride she would have to cover up her breast area and find a way to add length to the dress. The brideinformed the pastor there is no way to accomplish this with so short notice and she has to wear her dress. The pastor let her know, he would not perform the ceremonythen walked back to his office. The wedding party tried many times to change the pastor’s decision but their efforts was ineffective. Around 4:15pm guest at the wedding were growing impatience and were looking for answers for the delay. When they were told the reason for the delay around 4:35pm their impatience change to anger and disbelief. After hearing how the bride was crying her eyes out in back, a minister who was a guest at the wedding offered to perform the ceremony. When the minister asked the pastor for permission to perform the ceremony, the pastor told him ‘no’ and expressed to him how his request was disrespectful. AmericaPreachers.com asked the bride and groom for pictures of the dress but instead was sent an email with alink of the exact dress worn by a professional model from the companies website. The bride did mention, ‘there were small alterations made to the dress to fit more desirably to my [bride] vision.’ “I’m a unique person, I chose this dress because it’s different than the traditional wedding gown you see at every wedding” the bride said. Two days later the couple is not married and is currently looking into options to recoup money their family lost with travel, food, and other expenses. The Truth Ministries Holiness Church was established 14 months ago and currently rent a converted shoe store for worship services. Calls to Apostle Canty and Truth Ministries were not returned. Neither the bride or groomwere members of the church. This is the picture sent to Americ aPreachers.com of the exact style dress worn by a professional model from the company’s website.

A Philadelphia woman has shown up alive 13 days after her family buried her in an emotional service. Sharolyn Jackson, 50, was laid to rest at Colonial Memorial Park by her devastated family on August 3, following the Philadelphia Medical Examiner signing a death certificate and releasing a body believed to be hers. ‘I had to call my wife and give her the sad news over the phone you know, that they’d just found our daughter dead,’ her father Dave Minnie said. Miracle: Sharolyn Jackson, 50, pictured, was laid to rest at Colonial Memorial Park by her devastated family on August 3, but she later turned up alive But last Friday, Jackson showed up alive at a mental health facility in central Philadelphia. Her son, Travis, passed on the good news to her father, who was overjoyed. ‘You know you feel you’re just about to get over it, that she’s dead, then Travis comes here with the good news that she’s alive,’ he told CBS News, laughing. Jackson was reported missing from her West Philadelphiahome on July 18. When a body of a woman fitting her description was found on July 20 on a West Philadelphia street, officials thought it could be her. A social worker who knows Jackson, and Travis, both identified pictures of the dead woman as the missing Jackson. Grave: There is now an investigation underway into who isburied in the grave, pictured The Medical Examiner’s Office then signed a death certificate, which allowed an undertaker to remove her body for funeral services and burial. ‘They showed (Travis) black and white photos. An investigation has now been launched into whose body is in fact buried in the grave thought to be Jackson’s. Officials know the woman died from natural causes and her body was found on the street on July 20. They are seeking an order to exhume the body in an attempt to identify the woman. Minnie said that while he was thrilled to have his daughterback, he feel’s great sorrow for the family whose loved one is buried at the gravesite.
