Nairaland GeneralAre New Year Resolutions Necessary? by dapyd1(op): 7:59pm On Dec 31, 2013
The year is coming to an end today, and if we take a look at the trending words on people's lips, at least 'NEW YEAR RESOLUTION' is one of them. Every year, millions of people write down things, events, places etc, they want to come to fruition before the end of the year. Today I just want to look at the pros and cons of this.

ARGUMENT AGAINST
We all know that majority of people who make new year resolutions don't keep them. They keep on procastinating until another year goes by. Why, because the year is long, therefore they keep shifting until time has all but gone.
Also, most of these resolutions are vague and immeasurable. They don't even know the why or how of it leaving them even more confused and frustrated. For instance, I want to buy a car this year (which is not even a resolution by the way). Why? How? When exactly? Etc are other questions usually not answered by New year resolutions.
Another argument as seen by the above is that many don't even know what resolutions are. They just scribble anything that comes to their minds. I want to buy a house this year is not a resolution, its a want. I will start saving 25% of my income every month to buy a house in October is more like it.

ARGUMENT FOR
For all my earlier arguments above, resolutions have delivered a whole lot of benefits to a lot of people (even if they form the lesser percentage). So long as a thing is benign, even if only to 1%, then its worth it.
So many people's lives would have gone off track had it not been for the resolutions (written or mental) they had at the beginning of the year.
It also gives a sense of responsibility to a person. You know you are in charge and have a mental picture of where you see yourself at the end of the year, and then you go for it. Period.

CONCLUSION
Although I am neither for nor against New Year Resolutions. I believe the best method (I stand to be corrected) is to make your long term plans and divide the year into shorter periods so as to make the holistic easier. Just saying, in a bid to achieve the whole, you have to take it part by part.
For example (and this has worked for me), I could write in my year resolutions, 'I want to read 12 books this year'. That's 1 book a month.
At the beginning of January I write, I want to read 'how to make friends and influence people' by Dale Canergie.
And probably everyday I divide the book into chapters to read.
This may sound cumbersome but in reality it isn't. It will not take you more than a few minutes a day and will make your planning easier. This way, you'll be surprised that you'll even exhaust your resolutions before the year runs out. I hope it works for you.
My two cents.
Please leave your opinions, criticism, commendations in the comment section.
Thanks.

4tunebest: I dont understand how this(quoted above) translates to your parents not suppporting your career path. What they are against is not your career path but your decision to go vegan. Enlighten me if 'am wrong.

As an afterthought, is it mandatory for you to be a vegetarian to achieve your career goals and objectives?
Thanks a lot.
No, it is not compulsoryto be vegetarian for my career path. That was more of a lifestyle choice than a career one. Its under review anyways.
As for what my mum is against, I understand its my diet choice but the way she went about it and the additives (like critising authors of diet books) makes d thought of briefing them on my career path scary.
Another question esp from my father would be; what happened to 7 yrs of training for a course.

Dear Nairalanders,
I'm a student of a reputable university in Nigeria. I am studying a course in Environmental Design and Management and I have been doing so for 6 yrs now (2yrs ND, 1 year IT, and 3YRS Direct entry to University). I am actually a brilliant student and actually rejected admission to study medicine in 2007 and I'm d best in my class (should finish with a first class by God's grace).
Now, this is my predicament. Lately I discovered my real passion for fitness and nutrition. And I started planning along the line. I became a vegetarian and I have big (very big career dreams) but the problem is I came home after about 6 months and my mom (and dad too) was like; I look scrawny and she attacked my decision to go vegan.
I'm now afraid to even discuss my plans with them sef.
I'm an independent person and my parents have always been supportive of our (children decisions. They don't impose, but this time around I feel something is amiss. Please advice.
P.S. I apologize for my long anecdote and errors.

Moderators please I don't know where to post this, would appreciate if you could help me move it to the most suitable section.
I was travelling down from Ife to Lagos via Ondo. We got to a place where live on the main road, a party was being held and every passage was blocked. We had to go pass an alternative route which cost us about 1 hour. This led me to some questions:
Is this barbaric culture not done with in this country? Are there any grounds for doing such, as in like permits? What happens when the "appropriate" authority (we are to report to) is the one organizing the event.
Nairalanders please share your thoughts and experiences.
HealthBody Fat Percentage by dapyd1(op): 12:27am On Dec 20, 2013
This is one question that most people have asked at one time or another. It could be put as; ‘how fat am I?’ Simply put, what is my body fat percentage? Simply put, Body Fat Percentage is the ratio of fat to other contents in the body (water, blood, organs etc.). To understand body fat percentage, we have to grasp how our body works. When we eat, the food has a caloric value (read more about calories here). This food is turned to energy (glucose) and taken to the body cells for use in our daily activities. When we consume excess than we need, the body converts the excess glucose to glycogen which is stored in the liver. When the capacity of the liver is exceeded, the remaining glycogen is stored on the muscles as an overlay i.e. it takes the shape of the particular muscle underneath. The more the glycogen stored, the more the weight of the body and its bloating.

There is some fat needed by the body, this is called essential fat. Any level beneath this could lead to serious medical complications. For men, it is around 2-5% and for women 10-12%. Reasons are:
- Our major organs are covered in fat to insulate them. If this fat is eroded, it leads to serious medical complications and ultimately death.

- It is fat that is converted to energy when the body needs it; if not our muscle will be depleted.
- Fat absorbs certain nutrients which will be made available to the body when needed e.g. Vit A, D, E and K (Fat soluble vitamins)

WHAT IS THE NORMAL BODY FAT PERCENTAGE

The essential body fat percentage as said earlier is 2-4% for men and 10-15% for women. It is not advisable to go below this. Even professional body builders only get to this level during and around their performance. Beyond that, their fat percentage is much higher.
Because of Estrogen levels, women are not expected to go below 10-12% especially if they are either trying to or have intention to conceive.

The following table shows men and women at different body fat categories.

Knowing yours will help you in your weight loss goals. There are different methods to know your body fat percentage and one the cheapest and effective is looking in the mirror.

NOTE: How you look at a particular level of fat depends on our muscle mass. What this means is that two men with 10% body fat percentage and differing muscle mass will look quite different from each other as the below image shows.

One last thing really hindering us is, POWER. Give us electricity and see if local industries won't boom.

This thread is specifically for men. I was at a gathering where a guy removed his shoes and the whole place started stinking most likely due to socks he was wearing.
My question is; how long should you wear a pair of socks for? I wear my own, 2 days (black). 1 day (white).
P.S. The guy was humbly told to put his shoes back on coz it was rude the way he removed it.(So as not to embarrass him).
EducationOAU Restores Power by dapyd1(op): 7:12pm On Dec 08, 2013
As those who are students of OAU can attest, during the break (anyone), electricity is seized from all halls of residence for proper management and non-wastage as the authorities deem the remaining students too few to use the light properly.
As it stands now, OAU has restored light to halls of residencies across campus. This signals a statement of intent to the earlier announcement of resumption as they only do this upon resumption only.
But the question is; what happens to lectures? Is OAU boycotting ASUU? Knowing OAU as a stronghold of the association, if OAU pulls out won't there be crisis?
What happens next is anyone's guess, but for now all we can say is; let's wait and see.

I understand our sentimentality (I'm a student too) but see, the federal govt can't be trusted. When Doyin Okupe was talking on Channels, it was obvious the man was not telling the truth in some areas. Its very simple, you say you have opened a formal account with CBN. Notify ASUU (not in the news) and let there be a signed memorandum signed by the Attorney General (ASUU is not dumb), who owns CBN. Then the agreement on salaries. Period. You can't expect ASUU to call off the strike of 5 months based on word of mouth of Doyin Okupe of all people.

HealthDangers Of Common Salt by dapyd1(op): 12:00am On Dec 07, 2013
Common Salt, table salt, sodium chloride etc. these are the various names salt is known by. Salt is a compound made up of Sodium and chlorine hence the name Sodium chloride (Nacl). When dissolved in water sodium chloride yields sodium in the body and found in extracellular fluids. Common salt is obtained mainly sea water. To recover common salt, sea water is run into lagoons and allowed to evaporate. The sun’s heat evaporates water and crude common salt is left behind.

Salt is required by the body the body because it serves some functions in the body: it is important for the maintenance of red blood cells and helps proteins to dissolve, help retain water in the body and maintain water balance, sodium ions help transport substances across cell membranes, it also plays a part in the electrical activity of heart. It is an important component of blood plasma and plays an important role in the acid-base balance of the body.

There is some salt present naturally in the foods we eat which under normal circumstances is more than enough to meet the required needs of the body, every pinch we put in our soups, stews and other foods is just excess and the body most times gets rid of it.

Harmful Effects of Common Salt
i. Salt is a stimulant: It stimulates sympathetic Nervous System and adrenal glands and creates stress arousal. That’s why it comes under the category of stress food.

ii. High blood pressure: Excessive salt causes water retention in the body and increases the blood volume and cardiac output resulting in high blood pressure. Considerable fall in B.P> is observed with reduction in dietary salt intake in Hypertension.

iii. Weakening of bones: Eating too much salt can pull calcium from bones making them weak (osteoporosis). More calcium is also excreted in the urine with the ingestion of more table salt.

iv. Effect on Kidneys: excess salt puts a heavy burden on kidneys because they have to work harder to remove excess salt. Hence, they gradually weaken. Kidneys can’t remove more than 4-5 gm of salt per day, remaining salt gives rise to ailments in the body.

v. Increase in weight: excess salt in the body increases the weight of the body because; kidneys eliminate excess salts from the body by filtering out the sodium that makes up part of the salt compound. In case the kidneys work less efficiently, more sodium is retained in the body. Since the kidneys are geared to maintaining a fixed proportion of sodium to water in the blood, excess salt in the body means excess water too and hence weight of the body.

vi. Worsening of Edema: Salt makes edema worse and should be avoided in all edematous states whether due to liver, kidney or endocrine diseases.

vii. Hardening of Arteries: Table salt is not completely soluble in water and tends to harden the arteries by its excessive use. For good health, that salt is required which is completely soluble in water.

viii. Salt increases uric acid: excess salt interferes with the elimination of certain wastes of the system like uric acid and therefore contributes indirectly to various diseases like gout etc.

ix. Bronchial and Lung problems: Deficiency of organic sodium in table salt results in bronchial and lung problems because organic sodium is required for the elimination of CO2 from the system.

Better Substitutes for Table Salt

i. The salt in fruits and vegetables is organic in nature and loosely covalently bonded, unlike Nacl, and can be easily utilized by the body. In fact, whatever amount of salt is needed by the body is already provided by the natural foods we take daily.

ii. Rock salt is considered better than table salt. Rock salt deposits are found in some mountainous regions. Salt is dug out from the deposits. Rock salt has been found to be completely soluble in water and the body enzymes can make good use of it thereof.
Rock Salt

iii. Black salt is also considered better than ordinary salt because it (black salt) is organic in nature.

iv. When the doctor tells you (especially high B.P. patients) to reduce salt intake, he is talking about sodium. So, potassium salt is recommended. Such salts are readily available in Nigerian markets although are costlier.

Politics10 Surprising Facts About Nelson Mandela by dapyd1(op): 12:33pm On Dec 06, 2013
Nelson Mandela was one of the true giants of 20th-century politics. Not only was he South Africa’s most popular president, he was instrumental in ending apartheid, fighting AIDS in Africa, and promoting global peace. However, he was also human, and that humanity led to a number of decisions at odds with our Western image of him.
To honor his passing, here are 10 surprising facts about one of Africa’s greatest-ever leaders.

10. He Hated His Public Image
When Mandela was first elected president of South Africa, a local newspaper ran a quote of his in front-page bold type: “ I’M NOT MESSIAH.” While Westerners picture him as a saint-like figure, Mandela was, in his own words, just “an ordinary man who had become leader because of extraordinary circumstances.” Well, what of it? Most politicians practice false modesty. Heck, 90 percent of all US election campaigns are run on it.
But Mandela wasn’t farting about: by all accounts, he hated his popular image. He was human, had made mistakes, and knew he wasn’t the angelic deity the world wanted him to be. And that’s important, because it makes his story all the more amazing: here was a regular joe who stood up for what he believed in and changed the world. Now, how much more inspiring is that than some sort of half-baked messiah storyline?

9. He Was A Communist
This one needs some clarifying. For starters, the South African Communist Party of the ’50s and ’60s stood in direct opposition to the establishment—the same establishment that was busy making life terrible for millions of black citizens. So it’s not hard to see why someone who was both poor and black might be attracted to it. Second, there’s quite a lot to suggest Mandela was more interested in learning resistance techniques than turning South Africa into a Marxist utopia.
But the evidence still suggests he was once an active memberand later hid this to gain American support. And it’s lucky he did—in a confrontation between a racist regime and a former communist, there’s every chance the West would’ve just washed their hands of the whole thing and had done with it.

8. He Was A Womanizer
Just as it is with your own parents, it’s hard to imagine that cuddly old Mandela was ever a sexual being. But according to his biographers, the man was more than just a sexual being—he was the Casanova of 1940s South Africa. The book Young Mandelaby David James Smith paints a portrait of him as an energetic, charismatic, and dashing guy—equal parts James Dean and Che Guevara.
It’s said women “inevitably . . . fell at his feet,” and he managed to carry on dozens of affairs at any one time. The book isn’t a simple hatchet job either; Smith had the support of the Nelson Mandela Foundation throughout. As mentioned above, Mandela wanted the world to be aware of his failings, though in this case, that “failing” seemed to mostly consist of being awesome.

7. His Ex-Wife Was Terrifying
Despite his reputation as a ladykiller, Mandela did settle down with three different women in his life. While his first and third wives seem like ordinary, decent women, his second, Winnie Mandela, was the female equivalent of Tony Soprano. In 1991, she was convicted of abducting and murderinga 14-year-old police informant and given a six-year suspended sentence.
Over the years, she also faced accusations of beating, torturing, and “disappearing” whomever she felt stood in the way of her then-husband’s cause, usually on the flimsiest of evidence. Throughout her time in the ANC, she advocated the use of “necklaces” (execution by putting a burning tire around the neck of suspected traitors), ordered murders, took part in violent interrogations, and set up her own secret police. If that wasn’t enough, she is now once again embroiled in a murder investigation, this time for the execution of two ANC spies in 1988.

6. He Personally Helped AIDS Patients
One of the few big criticisms that can be leveled at Mandela is his slow response to the AIDS crisis. It wasn’t until after he stepped down from the presidency that he began to campaign in earnest—by which point the new leader, Thabo Mbeki, was busy doing all he could to stop effective legislation. Sounds like a failure, right? Well, think again. According to Bill Clinton, whose foundation spends millions fighting AIDS, Mandela was so determined to make a difference that he sent personal checksto sufferers to pay for treatment. Since South Africa has the biggest number of infected people anywhere on Earth, his efforts were like trying to swallow the ocean. Yet still he tried—even in the face of a hopeless pandemic, he tried. In other words, it wasn’t just in politics that he was awesome.

5. He Was Friends With Gaddafi
Of all the unpleasant tyrants in the world, Muammar Gaddafi could try out for least pleasant. But he had one friend in the international community that everyone was totally cool with: Nelson Mandela.
Again, this entry needs some context. It’s not as if Mandela got out the latest edition ofWorld’s Worst Dictatorsand decided to cozy up with one of them. While Mandela’s ANC was still outlawed, Gaddafi was one of the few people belligerent enough to support them, supplying arms and money at a time when they needed it most. Never one to forget a friend, Mandela repaid Gaddafi by visiting him in 1994 while it was still technically illegal, naming his grandson after him and supporting his regime right until the end. Again, to us here in the West, it looks like lunacy. But Mandela once claimed apartheid couldn’t have ended without Libyan support, so maybe this should be seen more as loyalty than anything else.

4. He May Have Been A Wife Beater
There’s no easy way to go about this one. When Mandela divorced his first wife in the late ’50s, she claimed he had assaulted and threatened her. While she eventually withdrew the claim, it was left to stand between May 1956 and November the same year. Also, it’s worth noting the case never came to court, meaning no judge or jury finally ruled on the truth of the allegation. Now, it’s probably impossible to say for certain whether there was any truth to Evelyn’s claim that Mandela had assaulted her. However, the court record is there, and the fact remains that she made the claim as part of a divorce suit. So, was it a case of Evelyn making up claims to justify the divorce, or did Young(er) Mandela have the sort of temper issues that we really don’t want our heroes to have? Who can say? But it remains a (possible) smudge on the life of a great man.

3. He Founded The ANC Military Wing . . .
While most of us are aware the world once saw Mandela as a terrorist, we’re probably not clear on how deep that goes. Put simply, if it wasn’t for Mandela, there wouldn’t have been a military wing of the ANC. Since it was the military wing that would later target civilians with a bomb deadlier than the recent Boston attacks, this is actually a big deal. Bear in mind, the military wing was founded in response to the Sharpeville Massacre, when armed police opened fire on protestors, killing 69. Nonetheless, at least two of the ANC’s attacks targeted innocent civilians, with fatal results. And such an idiotic action should never be forgiven.

2. . . But Opposed Violence Toward Civilians
On the other hand, those who know Mandela as a terrorist might be surprised to learn he never harmed a single person. Not only that, he steadfastly opposed the MK (military wing of the ANC) ever targeting any human beings, let alone non-military targets. By the time Mandela was thrown in prison, the MK had gotten no further than blowing up electricity substations and railway tracks, leading to approximately zero deaths. It was only after Mandela was jailed that they stepped up to targeting military personnel, and only in the 1980s that they branched out into civilian murder.
In every bloodthirsty campaign, Mandela was either uninvolved or actively disapproving. In 1977, the ANC (then a terrorist organisation) even signed up to the Geneva Convention, committing themselves to avoiding innocent bloodshed. The fact its acting leaders changed this stance in 1985 is no fault of Mandela’s. Put simply, while he may have been responsible for the creation of the MK, he was no more at fault for their actions than, say, Marx was for Stalin’s.

1. He Loved The Spice Girls
For a man who famously had a fantastic sense of humor, the passing of Nelson Mandela has been marked with a distinctly somber air. So let’s remedy that with this final entry. According to several sources, not to mention the man himself, Nelson Mandela was—hilariously, fantastically, brilliantly—a committed Spice Girls fan. For those of you who slept through the 1990’s, the Spice Girls were a barnstorming pop band who stood up for feminism by being loud and obnoxious and everything we expect a crappy British pop band to be. But they were successful enough to meet Nelson Mandela in 1997, where he referred to them as his “heroes” and said it was one of the most emotional moments of his life. This is no joke. According to the BBC, Mandela was more awed meeting a girl group from North London than meeting Bill Clinton, Tony Blair, and the UN Secretary-General combined.
And when you think about it, what could be more fitting? Here was a man who accomplished extraordinary things, but was never really more than ordinary—one of the greatest statesmen the world has ever seen, yet still just a shy fanboy meeting his favorite band. Legend, saint, martyr . . . maybe. But more than anything, Nelson Mandela was just an (awesome) regular guy. And that should be his legacy.

HealthIs Size The Real Deal? by dapyd1(op): 10:50pm On Dec 03, 2013
In the medieval times, due to the foraging and nomadic lifestyle we had, humans were naturally slim. A picture taken at the beach up until the 1950’s will show the number of people with lean sizes in the higher percentile. As technology began to grow and better machines invented, our lifestyle became sedentary and our waistline bigger.

We have people of differing race, colour and size in the world and the ideal size for the human body differs between people and culture. Generally, a size that draws the most appeal would be a runway model figure for the ladies and for the guys, the sexy Hollywood actor. If this is the fault of the media or the media feeding off our sentiments, I don't know. At least, the media is made up of people.

In Nigeria today, we have ladies and guys, who due to genetics and other factors naturally have the right figure but ask them to some work that requires endurance like jog a kilometer and they would probably collapse out of exhaustion begging the question; is size the real deal?

In today’s world, big (not fat) people are stereotyped as seen by the overshadowing of the plus size model industry by the ‘thin’ models on the major runways. Every lady wants to become Giselle and ever guy wants to marry her.
My take is this; why don’t you go for a healthy and fit you. Let your objective be to feel and be as good as possible and the size will settle itself. Have a positive mental attitude, Love your body (no matter your size), nurture it, feed it well and right (not with junks), do exercises (especially aerobics) and leave the rest. Even if you don’t become Giselle Bundchen or Taylor Kisch, it’s your body not theirs.

Do not in a mad rush to become what you are not, take drugs and utterly 'useless' supplements or push yourself too hard which will eventually cause more problems than solutions.
I am an advocate for fitness and don’t like when people carry layers of fat around. But even if you are not thin, it does not mean you are not fit.

Live a healthy lifestyle and the rest will take care of itself.

HealthPrecautions On Jogging by dapyd1(op): 8:48pm On Nov 11, 2013
Almost everyone at one time or the other has participated in jogging. Either as a one-off due to one reason or the other or as a lifelong commitment (like me). The tips below are designed to flag some common precautions we can take in jogging especially in this part of the world and also to aid our quest for fitness and better living.
1. Face traffic: For those of us who jog on busy or fairly busy roads especially in metropolis like Lagos, this is very important. When jogging, please face traffic, this will help in monitoring oncoming vehicles so as to dodge or jump in case of reckless driving or swerving by motorists.

2. Medical problem: If you have a medical problem especially if it is respiratory or a heart disease, it is important to clear yourself with your physician first. There is ever likelihood that you will be cleared to jog albeit on a milder level or probably walking. But please see a doctor first so as not to cause more harm than good. You don’t want to take one step forward and two steps back.

3. Don’t jog after a heavy meal (and even light ones too): After eating, REST. You can also engage in mild activities like playing games, watching T.V. etc. The body needs a lot of energy during digestion. Our body is not designed to do both digestion and exercise at the same time. You will also feel very uncomfortable and/or dizzy. Go three to four hours after your meal before jogging.

4. Don’t undo your work: Please compliment your jogging with good eating habits. I know of someone who after a month of jugging had gained an extra 4 kg. After probing, I found out she eats heavy and takes a lot of junk food like ice cream, meat pie and soft drinks. She was burning calorie and piling it right back in multiple fold.

5. Walk fast also: Our body gains more by jogging fast (running) short distances than slowly for long distances. So jog slower, then faster and complement it with brisk walking. It pays that way.

6. Jog in proper apparel: When jogging, dress properly and appropriately. Use your sweatshirt, sport shorts or trouser and running shoes (which are the most important). It helps in maximizing the benefits of the jog, prevent injury and also make you feel relaxed.

7. Earphones: As above, if you are jogging in a busy neighborhood, please minimize the volume of the device or earpiece or don’t use it at all. This is to enable you know what is going on around you. If the neighborhood is so busy, you have to put a stop to your jogging ever minute due to incessant blockage, please move somewhere else. Don’t stress yourself out.

8. Jogging in the morning: First, exercise can be done anytime of the day as long as it is comfortable and conducive. But, if you can get time in the morning, its better. Why? It gives you more energy and increase focus throughout the day. It boost metabolism; you’ll loose excess fat and feel lighter.

Emmanuel Ofosu Yeboah was born in Ghana with a severely deformed right leg. Against all cultural odds, he became a successful adult and has helped raise awareness and much-needed funds to help disabled people in his home country, who are seen as second-class citizens. He accomplished all this by cycling across Ghana and participating in various triathlons.

Emmanuel Ofosu Yeboah was born in 1977, and it was immediately noticed he had a severely deformed right leg, which usually spells doom for the children of Ghana. Nearly 10 percent of the babies born in that country have a deformity and most of them are outright killed or abandoned by their parents because they are seen as curses or bad omens. Yeboah’s father left shortly after his birth, leaving his mother to care for him by herself.
It would not have been shocking for her to abandon Yeboah but she decided to send him to school instead, a privilege usually reserved for the select children of a family, because it is prohibitively expensive. To make up for this, she carried him the 3.2 kilometers (two miles) to the school every day. He also learned a trade, shoe-shining, so he wouldn’t have to beg for a living. When his mother died in 1997, Yeboah decided to dedicate the rest of his life to helping spread the inspiration and message of tolerance she instilled in him.
In 2002, he finally undertook his journey, cycling the 650 kilometers (400 mi) across Ghana, all with just one leg. He inspired the country’s disabled, who felt like the government was not helping them in any way and that they needed a hero. Under pressure from the public, the king of Ghana publicly acknowledged and honored the disabled population. Yeboah later set up a sports academy and has so far acquired the funds for over 8,000 wheelchairs, helping the other disabled people of Ghana by raising funds and awareness through various triathlons and other events.

In celebration of Flag Day in June 14, 2002, the city of Lompoc, California, created a 740 x 390 foot US flag made out of 400,000 larkspur flowers. The flag covered 6.65 acres and the stars measured 24 feet in diameter.

In late 2009, a mosaic reproduction of the famous painting Mona Lisa made from 3,604 cups of coffee was created for the Rocks Aroma Festival in Sydney, Australia. Measuring 20 x 13 feet, it was created by the Sydney Harbour Foreshore Authority. A team of eight people took three hours to arrange the cups of black coffee, which are ‘shaded’ into different sepia tones by 564 pints of milk.

HealthGonorrhea Bacterium Is The Strongest Living Creature by dapyd1(op): 11:31am On Sep 10, 2013
Scientists have recently discovered that gonorrhea bacterium is, pound for pound, the strongest living creature on Earth, capable of pulling up to 100,000 times its body weight. Filaments called pili, which grow from the bacteria, can be up to 10 times as long as the bacteria itself and are what the gonorrhea uses to move itself or pull other organisms.
The Whole Bushel
Researchers at Columbia University have recently discovered a new holder for the title of strongest living creature: the gonorrhea bacterium. Able to pull up to 100,000 times its own body weight, it is immensely stronger than any other creature ever recorded. (TheOribatidmite, probably second to gonorrhea, can only lift a little over 1,000 times its body weight, making it nearly 10 times weaker than the bacterium.) A typical heavy horse with this strength would be able to pull 100 million kilograms of weight (but without the aid of sissy things like wheels).
Gonorrhea, like various other bacterium, produces filaments from its “body,” known as pili. These pseudo-appendages are responsible for movement and pushing things out of the way. The scientists wanted to study how gonorrhea uses them to help infect healthy cells and accidentally uncovered their hidden strength. Basically speaking, every once in a while (about 1 percent of the time) the gonorrhea would start to pull something and then it seemed it used other pili to assist, incrementally increasing the strength up to 10 times the original amount with which it was able to work.
The force gonorrhea is able to exert is relatively small, equal to about one-billionth of a Newton, a unit of measure which is the amount of forced needed for a human to accelerate one kilogram of weight by one meter per second squared. The scientists said this process has gone unnoticed for so long because a protein usually added to the bacterium blocks gonorrhea’s ability to use its pili.
