krestup: From what i have notice in the working environment is that its not about how well you do what you do but sometimes by the relationship you create. If you are working under a boss that don't see anything good in what you do, it will be difficult for you to be motivated or enjoy what you do because you will always be feeling like you are under pressure. Although its still possible to work under a bad boss and be successful and happy but in that case you will learn not to take into account the wrongs or the pressure he is putting you, instead try and see it from the positive side.you are really on point. You have to strive to work in sync with your boss |
APPLYING THE FIRST LAW OF POWER As stated earlier, the first law of power have been fully explained by Robert Greene in his book. I will borrow some lines from him and apply them to the corporate world. 1. Do not ever present your ideas (no matter how brilliant) to your boss with an air of superiority or a sense of accomplishment rather go to him seeking his help to fine tune the “sketchy” idea that you have. Intentionally omit some key but obvious points and let him feel you in. Let him believe that you are inspired by him and that you constantly need his guidance and mentorship. Ask for his input and advice even when none is given, this will give him a sense of accomplishment and ownership of the ideation process. Remember a idea no matter how brilliant may never see the light of day without his endorsement. 2. Do not go over his head to present your brilliant idea to your his boss or to top management without his nod of approval. Overtly ambitious employees make this mistake and tend to suffer the consequences later if not all through their career. From my book-Its okay to have a bad boss

Let me break this news to you. You don't have a job. As far as your unit is concerned, the only person that has a job is your boss. Your job and that of your colleagues is to assist your boss do his job. You are only a piece of the puzzle. Don’t overestimate your importance, you are just a satellite around your boss. He is the sun and you are just one planet out of so many that receive illumination and heat from him. This is the ideal scenario and also the reality. As stated earlier you may have discovered that you are more technically competent and more qualified than your boss however, you will more than likely end up in a miserable box or even in the labour market if you break the first law of power-Do not Outshine the Master as stated in Robert Greene’s book, The 48 Laws of Power. A lot of people have broken this simple yet fundamental law of power and have lived to regret it. I have broken this law on several occasions and I can assure you that the consequences are grievous and bitter to say the least. I am still suffering from my earlier mistakes and sometimes wish I could go back in time to undo my mistakes. Let me remind you that your boss is only human and is bound to make mistakes or can be outrightly cruel to you. Your boss may give you a lot of reasons to disrespect or even go over his head, but don't take the bait. Don’t ever try to steal his spotlight, let him be the top dog every time and shine through your efforts. A lot of bosses suffer from insecurity and they feel more insecure around super- competent and over qualified achievers and will do anything in their powers to undermine their effort. This is the reason a lot of talented people do not make it to the promotion list or are even asked to leave the company. It is your duty to make your boss feel special and important and at ease with you.Excerpts from new book-Its okay to have a bad boss-Understanding the 12 kinds of bosses and how to work with them-By Darlington

MANAGING TALENT As mentioned earlier too much talent when not properly managed my breed resentment or even envy in your colleagues and this may lead to complications in your carrier as they may gang up against you and begin to feed your boss with lies about you. If your boss is also not properly managed he may also become threatened by your talent and may be begin to work against you. A lot of talented people do not make it to the promotion list for this reason. Their bosses only maximise their talents for his own selfish purpose but keep the talented person outside the limelight. You may have noticed that you are better than your boss in analysis, research or even presentation, that is natural. You boss was placed above you not because he has better technical skills but probably because he has better managerial skills or has more experience in handling the customers or other bureaucratic processes. A good number of bosses feel insecure with multi-talented people and it is duty of the talented employee to make them feel at ease or they will face the bitter consequences. The people-skill dysfunction is closely related to the other curse, the curse of envy. The truth is talent do not seem fair as talented people do not have to struggle to do what they are gifted to do. This naturally makes them targets of envy. I must confess it is only too natural to envy talented people, they sometimes make less talented people look lazy or lacking in effort. If you are talented you don't have rob it in on other less talented colleagues or make them look stupid. Sometimes you have to go out of your way to try and help them or even impact some of your skills into them if possible. However, as you volunteer to assist them, always remember that the office is war zone and that you have to also keep your self relevant by been one step ahead, do not let all your skills out of the bag and please learn new ones. TWO TYPES OF ENVY Speaking of envy, there are two main kinds -Benign Envy and Malicious Envy. According to researchers at Tilburg University Netherlands, benign envy (where you don't have to kill the other person) is actually a more positive motivator than love or money while malicious envy is destructive and can even lead to murder. Irrespective of the kind of envy that you are faced with it is your duty to make your colleagues feel important and to make your boss shine, in that way you will be respected and appreciated. If you feel socially handicapped by reason of your talent work tirelessly on it, learn to throw a small party for your colleagues, learn to hang out after work hours and bring people into your creative world. Doing this and much more will gradually endear you to them and you will eventually be allowed into their trust circle.-Excerpts from my new book-Its Okay to have a bad boss-Understanding the 12 kinds of bosses and how to work with them by Darlington Onyeagori

THE INNER CAUCUS In almost every corporate setting, there is an inner caucus, an inner clique and the members of that clique need to determine in very clear terms that you are worthy of joining their clique. This inner clique becomes more important, if your boss is a member. I once walked into a clandestine meeting in the office on a Saturday. Immediately I stepped in, my boss became agitated, because I wasn’t expected to show up on a Saturday. It was really funny because they couldn’t have any meaningful discussion until I left the office later in the evening. At a point my boss came over and enquired when I was leaving and I also discovered that my colleagues who came to the office that day did not come to work but where just sitting idly at their desk waiting for me to leave. Apparently I wasn’t trusted and I do no belong to the clique. A few days later there was a change in the manning structure of my unit and I suspect that this was discussed in that inner caucus meeting. Having cliques in every organization is almost inevitable, they are usually breeding grounds for incompetence and ineptitude as incompetent employees simply do their best to join the clique while their poor performance on the job is overlooked. I know you sometimes wish for a situation where all is rosy in the work-front. A situation where all your colleagues like and appreciate you and your efforts, ignore your shortcomings, mistakes, failures and foibles. A situation where your boss is your best pal who pats you at the back all the time in spite of your recent ground- breaking mistakes, the recent deal you lost, the numerous errors on the last presentation your team made to the board of directors and the numerous effort-filled but result-barren projects you have handled and the list goes on.... However, you must know that the work-front is a war zone full of colleagues who see you as a threat to their very existence in the firm but pretend to empathise with you when you go through a heart-rendering shredding session with your boss while secretly happy that you are gradually exhausting the positive emotional deposits you had with your boss. At work you will also encounter different type of bosses. Some are aggressive, abusive, insecure and will scare the living hell at of you. The reality is that we have to grapple with these challenges on a daily basis and also face the reality that we may not have any real friends amongst our colleagues and that our boss is never our friend but simply our boss.

Obinoscopy: Nice! However they should also consider non-indigenes who have lived in the state for 10yrs and above. Such people have contributed their own fair share towards the existence and development of the state. They pay their taxes, they are part of the society. It would be unfair to exclude themYou must be kidding, nice sermon, ride on. |
