The Nigerian Governors’ Forum, NGF, on Tuesday said, despite the numerous attacks by the violent sect Boko haram, the sect cannot be found. While speaking with State House correspondents after a closed door meeting with Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo, the Chairman of the NGF, Abdulazeez Yari emphasized that the nation was suffering from the guerrilla welfare onslaughts orchestrated by the sect. The incessant bombings that heralded the inauguration of President Muhammadu Buhari who promised to confront the group headlong have continued as the weeks progress. The latest attack was a bomb blast that occurred on Monday at a police check point in Damaturu, the Yobe State capital. According to the state Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Toyin Gbadegesin, “Eight persons were killed today in Damaturu during a bomb incident carried out by suspected members of the Boko Haram sect.” He said three policemen and five suspected members of the insurgent group died during the explosion which occurred around 11 a.m. Monday. Yari stressed the Government was working hard to end insurgency. “The issue of insurgency is a problem of all. Now, the Boko Haram members cannot be found in any forest, or in any local government among the occupied local governments in Borno, Yobe or Adamawa states. You cannot find them. “So, what we are now suffering is a kind of guerrilla war, checking the bombs, dislodging the suicide bombings and what have you. “But to see a group of 100 or 200 as Boko Haram members to confront with our military, they cannot be found. So the government and the security agencies are doing their best to ensure that peace is restored, not that these things started under one year, two years. “We are working and now it is the responsibility of our government to ensure security of lives and property of the people and the issue of Boko Haram is number one that Mr. President is discussing with the President of the United States and the supports he is going to give Nigeria to ensure that the issue of insurgency comes to an end. “Government is going to put machinery in place, most especially the military and security, to ensure that the insurgency comes to an end.” |
Senator Dino Melaye has said that the leadership of the All Progressives Congress, APC, and the Senators of the Unity Forum cannot afford to destroy parliamentary conventions in selecting principal office holders on the altar of primordial sentiments and myopic arguments. While speaking during an interactive session with African Independent Television, AIT, on Tuesday, Melaye who is a Senator representing Kogi West in the current 8th Assembly stated that President Muhammadu Buhari had already congratulated the Senate President Bukola Saraki, therefore, the House has no option than to go straight to legislative business. The APC National Chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun had earlier written to Saraki where the names of the party’s preferred candidates for the four positions were contained. In a reply to Oyegun’s letter, Saraki had explained that the party’s letter came after the APC Zonal Caucuses had taken their decision to nominate candidates as Principal Officers in the Senate. “The said letter was received after the various APC Zonal Caucuses had taken their decision to nominate candidates as Principal Officers of the Senate in line with parliamentary convention and the extant provision of the Senate standing Order 2015 as amended (Chapter VI; Rules 28, 29 & 31 refers). This was a follow up to the prior APC Senate caucus meeting held on 23rd June, 2015. “Accordingly, the letters transmitting the decision of the APC Senate Caucuses do not conform to the recommendation as contained in your letter under reference,” Saraki had said.In defence of Saraki’s action, Melaye who described the Senate President as intellectually mobile stated that the election of Saraki and that of the principal office holders were irreversible. “From my own perspective there is no crisis in the senate, even the president have congratulated the senate President. “So we should not waste time on primordial sentiments but go straight to the legislative business. “The situation is this, what has been done on the floor of the senate is irreversible, as far as I am concerned, I have tremendous respect for my party but I want to say without fear of favor that we cannot destroy parliamentary convention on the altar of interest. “It has never happened in the history of the legislator where any party would write the parliament and indicate names against positions,” Dino said. He added; “People who advertise ignorance may come up with very myopic argument; the truth is that leadership of principal officers is appointed by their various caucuses.” However, against the party’s wishes, Saraki approved the nominations of an entirely different set of Principal Office holders.Constitutional lawyer Prof Itse Sagay, SAN, had described Saraki’s defiance as a rebellion against the party. “It is a rebellion against the process that brought him to the Upper Chamber of the National Assembly. It is the height of indiscipline that could lead to party’s collapse if care is not taken. “The leadership of the APC should take the bull by the horn and discipline over ambitious Saraki. “He should be expelled from the party before he destroyed it. Saraki has succeeded in destabilising the APC through his in-subordinate and confrontational attitude. “The party should make its position known and stand by its nominees for the principal offices in the Senate. APC should call the bluff of arrogant and power conscious senate president.” |
Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, Tuesday reiterated his resolve, to stamp out corruption from the Nigerian system, irrespective of party affiliations. During a brief interview with CNN anchor Christiane Amanpour, Buhari stressed that “nothing will work until the nation is secured.” He maintained that “Nigerians want the nation stabilised, and normal life needs to be restored to the southern part of the country, where the militants are still sabotaging oil installations and kidnapping people and demanding ransoms, and the N/Eastern part of the country where Boko Haram is still active, this is the main preoccupation of Nigerians now.” When probed about his campaign promises, Buhari explained that it was too early to judge his fulfilment of the promises he made on corruption, security and the economy, as he can be held to his promises for the next 3 3/4 years ahead, adding that 12 weeks or so was too early for anyone to pass judgement on his campaign promises. On corruption, the question posed to him was; “What about your campaign promises to root out corruption, if it turned out that some of the guilty ones were members of your own party or your own associates, would you crack down on them too?” “I just have to, there isn’t going to be any party member or personality that can escape justice,” was his response. As lofty as the President’s words sounded far away in America, at home however, it is believed that no member of the APC will get convicted on corruption charges. Ex-Bayelsa State Governor, and head of the initial transition committee inaugurated by Buhari, Timipre Sylva recently had 50 counts of corruption against him, dropped by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, in what many observers believed to be the first sign that Buhari lied during his campaign, and would not wholeheartedly pursue the need to rid Nigeria of corruption. In stark contrast however, has been the swift action taken by the same EFCC on former Governors and high ranking officials under the then ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP. Governor Sule Lamido and his sons have since been rounded up and paraded by the EFCC, while Senator Buruji Kashamu endured a protracted saga with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, who tried to force his extradition to the United States, without due process. Political observers in Nigeria believe that the what will be paraded as ridding Nigeria of corruption, will end up being a genuine plot to witch-hunt members of the previous administration, by the Buhari government. Close confidants of the President have at one point or the other been roped in corrupt practices, and it will remain a surprise if the EFCC or the Independent Corrupt Practices and related Crimes Commission, ICPC, laid a finger on these personalities. The All Progressive Congress, APC, and National Assembly crises seem far from over as Pro-Lawan Senators have demanded that the Senate President Bukola Saraki reverse the appointment of Principal Officers in the Assembly. The group has threatened to cause a stalemate on resumption, if the various anomalies are not put in place. This is coming close to the resumption from the over 3weeks recess that has been extended one week ahead in the bid to stall the unending crisis. The Pro-Lawan Senators also accused the Senate President of violating the Senate standing order by inaugurating fresh Senators as principal officers and ignoring orders from the APC. Senator Kabiru Marafa of Zamfara Central and the spokesperson of the Unity Forum stated the following: “They violated rule 3(2) to appoint both senators Ali Ndume and Bala Ibn Na’allah as leader and deputy leader, and now we hear another alleged absurdity that senator Godswill Akpabio may emerge senate minority leader. “Senators Eyinaya Abaribe, James Manager, George Sekibo, Emmanuel Paulke, Solomon Bwacha, Sonni Ogbuoji, Andy Uba, Uche Ekwunife and others, should not be in chamber while a fresher like Akpabio is becoming their leader. “I swear to God we will not allow this impunity to stand and a fresh one to be added “Who is the chairman or leader of North- West caucus for example? who is the secretary? If that is, who appointed or elected them, where and using which law?. “We all know how the leadership of the political parties and how they emerge. We know the supremacy of the political party (section 65-2b) of the constitution. Let somebody tell us the supremacy of any caucus. “Maybe they want stalemate in the 8th senate, looking at how they are running the place. They better shut it permanently than to reconvene and attempt to run it without respecting rules. “Oga Senate president please read order 1. They are misleading you; Nigeria no spoil reach this level God forbid. “We will force you on resumption to read order 1 and proceed by its provisions. Unless you want to reduce the Red Chamber to a jungle where anyone does what he or she likes with no one to call anybody to order. “Sir you are the custodian and greatest beneficiary of the content of that red book, if you choose to violate it we would help you to bring yourself down. “Can we continue to operate the highest legislative chamber of the land using forged standing order and violating the provisions of even forged one? When did Nigeria descend this low. ****See How Saraki,Mark & others forged standing order****** Marafa on behalf of the group called on eminent Nigerians to immediately intervene in the interest of Nigerians to avert the impending stalemate in the parliament. INDICATIONS emerged at the weekend that the failure of President Muhammadu Buhari to announce ministers after nearly two months of assuming office is not unconnected with the alleged malfeasance, fraud and misappropriation of funds traced to most of the ministerial nominees. The revelations by investigation teams reportedly revealed shocking security reports on the alleged fraud and misappropriation of funds by 33 nominees short-listed by President Muhammadu Buhari, with only three said to have passed the corruption test. Informed sources told Sunday Tribune that out of the 36 ministerial nominees penciled in and those submitted by the All Progressives Congress (APC) hierarchy and sent to the DSS, EFCC, ICPC, CBN, the Force Criminal Investigations Department (FCID), and the Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA) for forensic screening, only three nominees came out unscathed. President Buhari had insisted that he wanted to appoint people without corruption baggage that could taint administration and inhibit his anti-corruption drive. Sunday Tribune gathered that the president was dumbfounded as to the mind-boggling amount of money quantified in several transactions cutting across several sectors of the economy, including oil and gas, finance, power, governance and infrastructural commitments, where the persons involved failed the nation, thus contributing to its current decadence. Consequently, President Buhari is said to have rescheduled the new date for the submission of his list of ministerial nominees to the Senate for approval to September, during which it is hoped that he would have prepared a new list that will be screened and those that scaled the integrity huddle, presented for confirmation. A source said: “Buhari has said anybody with skeleton in the closet will not work with him irrespective of the role he or she played. If such persons are around him, it means he may be pressurised to compromise his principled stance”. “So they are trying to push him to a corner, because the truth is that they cannot seem to read or understand his body language. They have now seen that Buhari is ready to sacrifice anybody for Nigeria to move forward”, the source stated.
