It is now on record that from among those glamouring to be governor of our dear State including those from the disintegrated Poverty Development Party (PDP ) Godwin Obaseki appeared to be the only candidate devoid of indictment of any finance related offenses, dubious and fraudulent attitude. It is on this note that Edos in diaspora have deemed it fit to invite him for an open endorsement having being conversant with his rich competence coupled with his technocratic capacity to taking Edo state beyond the level Oshiomhole shall stop.
It is imperative to note therefore that as the life of this administration comes to an end, particularly in a situation like this when we are faced with new challenges of drastic low in crude oil price occasioned by PDP bad and retrogressive policies which has reduced the amount of foreign exchange Nigeria earns and our economy in terrible shape and Edo State now getting a lot less from federation account, Nigeria needs to take severe measures in order to fix its economic and social challenges for which Edo state will be not be an exception . A COMMUNIQUE ISSUED BY NETWORK OF CIVIL SOCIETY ORGANIZATIONS OF NIGERIA (NOCSON) AT THE END OF AN EXTRAORDINARY STAKEHOLDERS MEETING HELD ON WEDNESDAY 6TH APRIL, 2016 AT THE HUMAN RIGHTS HOUSE; #137, IKPOBA SLOPE, BENIN CITY, EDO STATE.

After much deliberations on the state of the Nation and Edo State on fundamental issues which bordered on the lingering fuel scarcity across the country, Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) Exploitative and Intimidating tendencies and the unlawful arrest, torture and extortion of Innocent Nigerians by the Police. We resolved as follows:

1. FUEL SCARCITY.
That the current fuel scarcity has caused the masses psychology, economic and financial trauma as Nigerians are now buying fuel at the rate of N250,000 to N300,000 and this has affected greatly the cost of living, food prices, transportation, goods and service etc. And the promise by the Minister of Petroleum (state) to end the fuel scarcity from Thursday 7th April, 2016 MUST be brought to fruition or we shall be compelled to engage in passive resistance and civil disobedience.

2. BENIN ELECTRICITY DISTRIBUTION COMPANY (BEDC) EXPLOITATIVE AND INTIMIDATING TENDENCIES.

That the BEDC Management has turned consumers to slaves with their adopted colonial policies and methodology in carrying out their day to day business. Therefore, as true progressives, the voice of the voiceless and defender of the defenseless, we are compelled to rise to the occasion and save Nigerians residing in Edo State and beyond from the iron grip of BEDC and NERC. This is because in a country where power generation, transmission and distributions has become an impossible mission and darkness has enveloped major part of the Country and BEDC are still distributing fraudulent estimated bills and using uniform officers and men of the Nigeria Army and Police to intimidate and brutalize citizens.

That we are fully aware that the management of BEDC has refused to obey court and National Assembly orders to reverse the current hike in electricity tariff and the distributions of prepaid metres to consumers across the country without a fee as required by the books.

That we condemned the hike in electricity tariff and the fraudulent estimated billings and fully demand for the total obedience of the subsisting orders of court as we shall in few day resume full sensitization of the people and thereafter collaborate with sister organization to launch a 24hours picketing of all BEDC offices.

That we condemned the illegal use of Military and Police Personnel and Men to harass, intimidate and brutalize innocent citizens. This is unconstitutional and unacceptable this 21st century.

That the Chief of Army Staff and Inspector General of Police should as a matter of urgent public importance withdraw the Military and Police officer and men attached to Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) since they serve no utilitarian value.


That the Department of State Security should investigate the unlawful, barbaric and exploitative activities of Benin Electricity Distribution Company to avoid break down of Law and order in Edo State and other State of the Country where similar fraudulent and oppressive activities is on going.

That Nigerians should fight for their fundamental rights, protect and defend themselves whenever and wherever such fraudulent and oppressive tendencies occur. They should ensure that they use their mobile phones to record the illegal, intimidating and exploitative activities of the Military and Police Personnel and Men as proof of evidence for legal actions.

3. POLICE UNLAWFUL ARREST, TORTURE AND EXTORTION.

That we commend the Inspector General and Edo State Commissioner of Police for the unrelenting effort to reposition the Police Force and curbing crime in Edo State in particular and Nigeria in general but condemn in very strong terms the unbearable and unacceptable way and manner the Officers and Men of the Police Force across the State are unlawfully arresting, torturing and extorting innocent Nigerians resident in Edo State under the guise of bail. We say this is man inhumanity to man in the guise of policing.

Further, that we resolved to write formally to the Commissioner of Police, Edo State to enable proper investigation and action to put a final stop to this ugly trend that will destroy the outstanding performance of the Commissioner of Police and the image of the Nigerian Police Force if not properly nipped in the bud.

A stitch in time saves nine.

An injury to one is an injury to all.

A threat to justice any where is a threat to justice every where.

The political quicksand that ushered the financial expert Godwin Obaseki of the all progressive congress in the already crowed gubernatorial race in Edo State has gathered enough momentum that no one is left in the doubt into which direction it goes.
His campaign train has attracted most noted able and experience politicians to itself to a frightening dimension making other aspirants in and outside the party develop cold feet. The heartbeat state of the nation is palpitatating as the political temperature remains high. Obaseki's intimidating pedigree coupled with his deep knowledge of the state economy has undoubtedly conspired to create for him a comfortable political space jettling his Co aspirants to develop a cold feet. Surprisingly some of them have resulted to the usual political antics of campaigns of slander and mud slinging. This that Obaseki is being sponsored by the incumbent governor Adams Oshiomhole, an allegation both the governor and had denied severally.

Senator Uzamere Resigns From PDP

A governorship aspirant of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo state, Senator Ehigie Uzamere on Monday resigned his membership of the PDP barely two weeks after the state congresses of the party.

Senator Uzamere who was in the senate between 2007-2015, is the only senator from the Edo South senatorial district who had spent two terms in the senate, since the creation of the state.

Though the reason for his resignation was not stated in a letter he sent to the National leadership of the party, but The Nation learnt that he was not happy with the way and manner the PDP was being run in the state particularly with the recent congresses of the party in the state, which Nation learnt the senator feared the party has been hijacked by a cabal.

However, in a statement signed by the senator announcing his resignation, he stated that “after due consultation with my family and political associates, I have withdrawn my membership of the PDP.

“I wish to thank the leaders of the PDP at the national, state and local government levels for their unflinching support and provision of platform for my first term as senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria representing Edo South senatorial district between 2007-2011.

“I also wish to thank the leaders of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) as it were then, for their unflinching support and provision of the platform for my second term 2011-2015. My heartfelt appreciation goes to the general electorate of Edo South senatorial district for giving me their mandate for eight years, the first of its kind in Edo South senatorial district”.

Hon. Philip Shuaibu is the member representing Etsako Federal constituency of Edo state in the House of Representatives. He was former Majority Leader in the Edo state House of Assembly and one of the political sons of governor Adams Oshiomhole. In this interview with Saturday Vanguard, he explains why governor Oshiomhole embarked on a wide consultation on who possibly succeeds him in Edo State and clears the air on Godwin Obaseki.
Excerpts:
Governor Adams Oshiomhole met with political leaders across the three senatorial districts last weekend to consult with them on the issue of his successor. How would you describe the meeting?

It was a very successful meeting. And this was the first time the governor of a state will be consulting with the people for the purpose of a successor and at the same time, it is in the interest of the party so that all of us will speak with one voice. What he is doing is to help stop this unnecessary expenditure that is incurred by aspirants, where people will sell their houses in the name of elections and by the end of the day, it becomes a do or die affair. So this consultation will help to curb the do or die politics. For the first time in this country, a governor is coming out to organize a talk where the agenda of his administration is discussed and the future of the next administration was the focus.
Other governors will not embark on this kind of discussions when they know they will soon be leaving. They don’t like talking about their exit, it is like a taboo. So those characters likening the actions of the Comrade governor to god- fatherism are talking rubbish. God fathers do not consult, a god father will impose a candidate but in this case, the governor is labouring, seeking every body’s position, giving everybody freedom. Nobody has been sacked on the account of his views on who becomes the next governor of the state. Everybody is expressing himself. That is the kind of platform that he has created and thank God he is leading by that example.
But there is this belief that some of you who are very close to him do not agree with him over the choice of Godwin Obaseki as the APC candidate?
That is not really the truth. But let me tell you, some people have dissenting voices, some have some fears about certain candidates. But the general view at the end of the day is that we will not rubbish the Comrade Governor. All of us that know what the Comrade governor has done to liberate all of us from the political slavery of Edo god fathers, will not want to go back to Egypt. The Comrade Governor has liberalized the political space that the son of a farmer can now contest for the governorship of this state without any form of intimidation.
So we will definitely come to an agreement and obviously I can tell you that with what the Comrade Governor has done in this state it will be difficult for anybody to defeat his candidate or APC candidate. And the process of choosing the APC candidate is what the Comrade Governor has started by consulting with stakeholders and more meetings will come up. And he has told us categorically clear that the wish of his party will be his wish. But don’t forget that as an incumbent governor, nobody can take that right from him. He has the right to choose his successor and that does not necessarily mean imposition or god fatherism.
It is a right you cannot take from him. The same way people are expressing their mind on who is their preferred candidate is the same way he is expressing himself. Oshiomhole passionately loves the state and would not want all he has done to be destroyed and go back to the era of locust. This man with all the hardship that the entire country is facing, road construction is on, he is building hospitals, salaries are paid as at when due. He crated the atmosphere for people to air their views and I know that at the end of the day we will choose one candidate. He does not want people to waste so much money and at the end of the day the party will tell them to withdraw or respect the party’s choice. It then becomes difficult.
Recently, a PDP governorship aspirant Pastor Ize-Iyamu was criticising the administration of the Comrade Governor on television, claiming that Oshiomhole has collected more money than Lucky Igbinedion’s administration yet he allegedly performed below expectation?
But of course you should know who is talking. If Ize-Iyamu will open his mouth to say Comrade Governor has not done anything it shows how backward he is as a politician in Edo state because a blind man can feel the works of the Comrade Governor in Edo state. Lucky Igbinedion was governor during the era of the oil boom. When the Comrade governor took over in 2008, what was a barrel of oil to compare to when Igbinedion was governor? What was the dollar to the naira as at that time? You cannot compare Igbinedion’s government with that of the Comrade governor.
The worst part of this government is better than the best part of that regime. And those that led to the failure of that Igbinedion administration should be ashamed to talk. Pastor Ize-Iyamu. He colonized Lucky and there was so much impunity. He may even be richer than Igbinedion today. He tried to do the same thing in APC with the Comrade Governor but of course Ize-Iyamu is too small where the Comrade is and the governor kept him where he belongs and that was what frustrated him out of APC to PDP, where he is still pursing his governorship ambition which he started even during Igbinedion administration.
Igbinedion as a local government chairman did very well and Edo people hailed him for that and that was why he won the governorship election. And when he was Local Government chairman, Ize-Iyamu was nowhere around him. But the moment he became governor Ize-Iyamu came and hijacked him and that was why that government failed. He became SSG in that administration and Lucky handed over the government to him. So these are people who are known in the state.
The Comrade Governor gave him oxygen mask that resuscitated him from the damage he caused in this state after he joined the ACN then. Edo people detested and frowned at him because of the role he played in that administration. If people like that will say they want to be governor of Edo state under the PDP, it means whoever the Comrade governor brings will beat Ize-Iyamu silly. Even Oshiomhole’s driver will defeat Ize-Iyamu in Orhionmwon, his village. Edo people are wiser now and will not want to be ruled by desperate politicians. Any person who wants to be governor by all means and can do anything to get power will not be good for the state.
These are not the kind of people we need today. We need people who can manage the meagre resources of the state the way the Comrade Governor has managed it. People who have vision for development. Comrade governor has laid the foundation for further development in Edo state but Ize-Iyamu cannot build on that foundation. When he was in charge of the state with Igbinedion, they killed Edo Line, Bendel Brewery, sold all the industries they claimed they built. They deceived Edo people that they were building industries such as the Ehor fruit juice company, the Cassavita plant at Uromi, Fertilizer Company at Okpilla but none of these companies survived even under their watch. All they did was to sell them and you think Edo people will forget?
Those industries became conduit pipes and that was why the EFCC convicted the former governor, his brother and one of his aides. And these were supervised by Ize-Iyamu who claimed he had no hand in it. We are aware that he has been attending all ceremonies including marriages, burials, birthday parties just because he wants to be governor. But we are praying the PDP will give him the ticket so that we will teach him a lesson. We will remind Edo people who the real Ize-Iyamu is and they will now compare and contrast and I am sure they will react with their votes. You cannot take people for granted for over ten years and you think they have forgotten.
You see Edo state today almost from zero revenue to billions. Edo is viable today. Salaries are being paid, projects are being executed despite the economic crisis and that is why we need a governor that will sustain the progress. And we are happy that the governor is following that slogan of let the people lead and he is consulting with everybody. Those of us who are following Oshiomhole will always tell him the truth and at the end of the day whoever he is convinced about, the entire party will follow him.
But do you not foresee crisis in your APC as a result of this governorship ticket?
The Comrade Governor is a very tactful politician, he is very intelligent and he is liked by all of us. He believes in the people and always aligns with the wishes of the majority. And I can tell you that the Comrade Governor will lead us to a candidate all of us will support and the person will eventually win the general election. He has the leadership skill that will hold the party together so we have no fear of any crisis. Whoever emerges after the primary will be the flag bearer and all members are expected to queue in and work. If you now feel like doing something contrary then you will be enemy of the party.

Nigerian Pastor, Tunde Bakare, has disclosed details of his meetings with former President Goodluck Jonathan, and what he benefitted from the former leader while he was in office.

Mr. Bakare, a former running-mate of President Muhammadu Buhari on the platform of defunct Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) in 2011, said he wrote four -point letter to Mr. Jonathan, calling his attention to the level of impunity in his administration.

Giving details of what he benefitted from the immediate past president, Mr. Bakare said, “Let everyone declare what he has received. I can tell you what I received. I took two people there one day and he invited us to dinner. I had a bad sore throat that day, so I took a pass regarding the dinner.

“Another day, I took a couple there and I took a cup of tea. I told you about the $50,000 which I refused, but that was Orubebe. He sent me a cow at Christmas – which I gave the staff to kill – and a hamper through our pastor in Abuja, but I told him to keep it.”

Mr. Bakare stated this in an interview with an Abuja-based magazine, THE INTERVIEW.

The pastor revealed that at a point, the former president offered to give him “something”, which he refused and opted for simply a pen.

“Finally, when the opportunity came and he (Jonathan) said, ‘I will like to give you something’. I [then] said ‘I like pens: so if you must give me anything, let it be a pen, so that I can show it to my people and say ‘the president gave me a pen,’” he disclosed.

He said one day, after a meeting with Mr. Jonathan, a former minister in charge of Niger Delta Affairs, Godsday Orubebe, rushed to offer him $50,000 for “transport”, an offer the pastor said he turned down.

“When we were leaving, Orubebe ran after me and offered me $50,000 for my transport. I said, ‘Haba, take your money, I am not for sale’. We said goodbye to him and the rest is history,” Mr. Bakare said.

Giving details of his meeting with the former president, Mr. Bakare said, “When he (Jonathan) became president, I said to him, ‘the things we marched and protested against, you are now perpetrating them – the same impunity’”.

“I gave him four points in writing. Before we left Lagos, I gave a copy to Pastor Adeboye and another to General Alani Akinrinade. I said, ‘we are going to say goodbye to this man’ because if a man cannot keep his own side of the bargain, because if you got here by the grace of God and not because of any pedigree and, within 10 years, had become the president of Nigeria.

“God has brought you into the kingdom for such a time as this, so you cannot begin to commit the same impunity,” he said.

Mr. Bakare said in another meeting with the former president, he (Jonathan) told him that he needed someone to tell him the truth.

“He reached out to me later and said, ‘look, let’s put that behind us; Nigeria’s situation is critical.’”

“Before I went, I called General Buhari and said ‘this man invited me, I don’t know what for.’ When I got there, he said he needed someone who could tell him the truth always. I said, ‘if that is what you want, you have me at your side,’” he said.

Mr. Bakare therefore challenged religious leaders to declare what Mr. Jonathan gave him, saying the clergy did not tell the former president the truth because they benefitted from him.

“However, you see, Christian leaders benefitted tremendously from his administration in terms of licences and waivers. The thing is, when you allow those in power to get you into any compromise, speaking to them will be very difficult.

“I don’t know if any of those allegations were true, but I have seen enough to begin to think that they were not able to use our overwhelming influence. If you have benefitted from evil, you cannot talk about it, nor criticize it. Let everyone declare what he has received,” Mr. Bakare said in the magazine interview.
