Analysis of Teams' styles after MD 1: Afcon 2021, with special focus on Nigeria's Super Eagles.

Courtesy: @OptaAnalyst

Note: Passes per sequence means average number of passes made before an attack.

1). Passes per sequence.
Nigeria's passes per sequence is just a little short of 2.5 passes per sequence. Meaning we didn't take things so slow in our buildup from the back before an attack. We were more direct. 1,2,3 passes and we were already threatening.

The goal for instance is an example.

Ekong to Aina... back to Ekong... Ekong moved leftwards and found Omeruo who drove forward on the left channel and found Simon with a nicely angled diagonal ball which Simon fed on to drive further forward down the left wing channel to put that cross in. I count about 4 passes there before that cross. Only 4 and gbam! Danger. Lol

A couple of such moves involved even shorter number of passes. Ekong straight to Simon and the latter crosses.
Or Omeruo straight diagonally to Simon and the same thing, he drives and crosses into the opposition box.

So we didn't really do much buildup or recycled as much passes. This partly explains why Egypt "out-passed" us even though we were Dominant in almost every other stats

Note that Algeria conducts a more patient build up play (4.2 passes per sequence). Same as Senegal (3.9 passes/sequence).

Even Egypt has a patient build up play. Theirs is 3.15/3.2 passes per sequence.

2. Direct Speed Upfiled

The other stat shows where we place graphically in terms of how quickly we get up the field from our defensive third into the opposition third/final third to threaten their goal or create something.

Ours stand at just under 2.0 meters per second (about 1.8 or 1.9 m/s).

You can see Sierra Leone and Burkina Faso are related to Route One. Lol.

Now for comparison, take a look at Man City in the 2020-21 season.

You can easily tell that Algeria is the Man City of Africa in terms of Build up plays.
Na Crystal Palace we be in comparison then. grin

Great move for Balogun. He has the skill set to be the best striker in the division. Hopefully he will be back to take his rightful place alongside the likes of Saka, Martinelli, Odegaard and ESR.

He is one reason I can have hope for the striker position next season.
Its a great move. Especially his postioning. Redboro do emphasize that for their strikers since time of Yak.

There was no way he could have passed the ball.
Take a look at Basco's video again.

I am not saying it is possible or not, i am just weighing on probables. What if Iwobi and Sadiq benefits from a rebound or deflection of his shot.

Again some people will as usual say that he is fond of flair and dribbles, had it been he did exactly what you suggested and maybe the pass was cleared or deflected by the defenders who have already closed down on him.

Anyways, as long as he did not score, thirty million blames on him.

Ejuke, one of the most intelligent forwards in the fold.
Also, seniormen no dey se setup again. If not, Enyeama, Mikel, Onazi, Ambrose for don give am roasting.

I recall a wall setup at 2014 WC and Enyeama was like "are you mad? Stand well for this wall na?"

Or Mikel giving an assist kinda pass at Confederation Cup and whoever wished to squander it did so and Mikel was dazed.

It's Sofascore and I do have an issue with the way they rate players performances sometimes.

A player can have a good game via assisting a goal and even creating 2 big chances but because he lost 5 of his 8 duels and missed 3 big chances and was dribbled past maybe twice... omo, your ratings will just drop.

But I notice this pattern doesn't always hold for some popular footballer names. grin
It is well. We go manage am like that. Thanks Goodness I got other stats apps and sites to always cross reference.
exactly. I kon dey wonder if Ndidi no popular atall. Yeye stats.

Another lack of preparedness both directly and indirectly.

Anything above 150k for this Vlah na scam abeg. We aren't Man City.

Man City even want use Big money lure Koulibaly, the guy still refuse till now.

Its not even about that we can't afford to pay that much. But it insults the performers on ground Currently, especially in the same age group. For all of the u24 in the XI, na Saka deserve that kind 200k upwards fee right now. Since 19yo o. angry

Meanwhile.... At Old Trafford....

Funny enough, I'll even prefer Victor Osimhen to come around and get 200k for starters. That guy has much more than the Lacazette spirit in him. And bullies defenders and has great positioning.

But its Vlah we have on the table. He's welcome. But I'm not supporting this initial wage fee.

So I watched the highlight dropped by super Basco

Apart from that goal, Nacho still had a poor first touch, if not he would had scored an hat trick in the game,

Simon needs to keep his cool, and also needs to be shaking his marker, when inside the box, we can do with some PKs,

overall, they need to calm down when in the opponent box, so to convert their chance,

one touch too heavy, in the opponents box, inability of both Simon, nacho, and even Awo to dive like a fish, even for the slightest push, denied us some pk,

Finally I miss our Diver Vicmo in that game, still all the best to him, he should cont6to enjoy his retirement
Defender no dey ever know when Vic go wan dive. He fit even enter defender and fall. Madt man. That guy is the most composed forward we had in the last decade inside the box 18. He'd have caused one pk vs Egypt if he was here.

So if you are in a position to demand big salary from your prospective employer you will not do it because of your age? It's normal once one has the bargaining power. It's Arsenal that came to look for him. Besides it's not 300k but 160k. Many small boys like Sancho earn big pay.

At his age he has lots of potentials. He can be the next whatever. I know how we missed out on Suarez and how most of us criticised the club for not bowing to Liverpool's demands.
We know we are in the age of high fees and all. But what has this guy won to warrant this fee pls. Sancho has won stuff. The same Sancho is now flopping at Manchester now. Its an EPL fever but let it be for EPL faithfuls. Pogba is about to get 500k now. Is that even sensible?

Its now an untested Vlah that at 21 will get 300k and by 25 will want 400k and in prime, much higher if he's performing.

Naaaaah.

Arsenal should have answered both Ramsey and Sanchez then that year. Simple.

How much was Messi collecting at 21 abeg?

For your age argument, then Saka should ve higher than Anybody. Simple. Oh, you see now. We have no assurance this guy will hit the ground running. We don't want someone to remind us of 350k ozil was collecting but was on the bench, useless to the cause. That alone made 55workers lose their jobs.

If we got the money now, its no reason to be casting it like its a club party dancefloor.

Mujtahida:
Ejuke, should be told that they are many paths to glory. An assist can be as good, sometimes even better than the goal itself.

In WCQ against Cameroun, we had a similar break for the 3rd goal as the one we had late in the game yesterday, Mikel sent Victor Moses on his way and Vic Mo laid it for Moses Simon. Moses Simon cut back and passed it to Vic Mo and Vic Mo slotted it home. Just three players with at most 4 touches. Unselfish play, always think of your team mates.

Look at how Iheanacho was laying passes for Awoniyi yesterday.

They should better warn that Ejuke. He should not use his personal glory hunting to scatter our joy.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w1TbcSg1Vgc
If that guy doesn't get Sharp remarks from Coachito, i no go happy seeing him play again sad

He doesn't seem to understand that the ease of playing and getting more glory, plus enjoying his game increases with just setting up his teammates. Abi he think say na Salah hin be?

A refined Ejuke vs Sudan, causing trouble and dropping assists would help him even become less predictable. A solid Defence would sniffle life out of him if he plays on like that. Nobody's doubting his flair sha.

Anything that would make Eguavoen take SE to finish in top 3, he should be trusted with taking the team to Qatar, just like the late Keshi was trusted after 2013 triumph.

I like Rohr's 2018 for some reasons especially ease of playing, but Franco-German don bam. The fact that Eguavoen's teammates are even supporting is proof that this time, things are expected to be different.

I don't know why CAF hired someone that they suspended on allegations of corruption less than 4 years ago. He ought to be stripped of his license for that rubbish officiating today
