ABUJA — THE national leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, yesterday, raised alarm that the All Progressives Congress, APC, was plotting to take over Rivers, Akwa Ibom and Delta states where the PDP genuinely won.

Addressing newsmen in Abuja, yesterday, PDP National Publicity Secretary, Chief Olisa Metuh, raised the alarm, arguing the PDP was ready for the love of the country to put behind it, cases of alleged election malpractices and anomalies that took place in some states in the north.

The party, which warned the APC not to take for granted its decision to concede defeat, alleged that the APC was planning to procure and compromise some stakeholders in the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, and security personnel to doctor electoral materials against the PDP at the tribunal.

Metuh, who noted that as a party, it must not be treated as conquered people, however, threatened that it will not accept any move by anybody to manipulate the process and rob it of clear victories in these states or any other state.

He said the PDP never raised issues about the elections conducted in Kano and Katsina where there was no void vote and alleged cases of underaged voting.

The PDP spokesperson, while answering questions, said: “We have not tried to make an issue of how voting was done in some parts of the north apart from the under aged people that voted and the way these things happened. Have we traded in card readers, how many people it recorded in those states?

PDP must not be treated like conquered people
“Even in some states, we have no void votes. In some states of the north, for instance Kano, there was no single void vote in the entire state. So, they are so brilliant and they are doctorate degree holders that they know how to handle it to the point that nobody made a single mistake.

“So, please, this is a country, but we are not waiting to be occupied. Yes, we have been told that the majority of Nigerians voted for the other party. As democrats, we have accepted it. But even in our laws, even in our grieving, we do not want to be like fools. They should not be treating us like conquered people.

“The language they use on us, they way they are doing it, it is like they are army of conquerors not people who are ready to be guided by the tenets of democracy but instead have come to deal with a conquered people and a conquered party.

“We have sustained democracy for 16 years. They have not even taken over democracy and they are telling lies and trying to instigate things to put our democracy in jeopardy.

“We will continue to defend democracy. We wish them good luck in the four years they are coming in sustaining this democracy. But the way they are going about it, they are starting on a wrong footing.”
In his statement entitled, “APC’s heinous plot against the people’s will in Akwa Ibom, Rivers and Delta States, Metuh said: “At the end of the 2015 general elections, our party’s leader, President Goodluck Jonathan in a rare show of statesmanship conceded defeat and congratulated the APC Presidential candidate, General Muhammadu Buhari.

“That singular action lowered the tension in the land, stabilized the polity and enhanced our global democratic credential and rating. In the same spirit, our gubernatorial and legislative candidates who lost at the elections also accepted defeat in keeping with the overall need to preserve our democracy and our unity as a people.

“These sacrifices from our candidates came notwithstanding the numerous anomalies and crass irregularities that characterized the general elections to the disadvantage of our party. The PDP took the outcome of the elections in good faith, not because the processes were without flaws but for the general interest of the nation.

“It is, however, worrisome that even in victory, the APC has remained desperate in the desire to be in total control of the polity by attempting to take over the states genuinely won by the PDP.

“You will recall that we had earlier alerted Nigerians of a groundswell of plots by the APC to foist a one party rule in our country by attempting to destabilize the PDP, take over some of our states and legislative seats, all to ensure that there is no strong opposition when they eventually assume power.

Instigating crisis

“As we speak, APC has resorted to instigating crisis, inciting the people while mobilizing resources to arm-twist the judiciary ostensibly to torpedo the will of the people in these states. In particular, our findings show that in Delta, Rivers and Akwa Ibom states, the APC machinery is working round the clock to ensure that it upturn the victory of the PDP and the mandate freely given to us by the people in these states.

“We are aware of the clandestine moves by the APC to procure and compromise some stakeholders in the elections including INEC and security personnel to bear false witness and doctor electoral materials against the PDP at the tribunal.

“This is in addition to sponsoring negative publications in some section of the media, laced with false claims and distortion of election figures to suit their nefarious plans of swaying public opinion and the course of justice against our party in these states.

“We know that the main aim behind APC’s desperation to take over these three states is their belief that they are strategic to the PDP and that taking them away will further weaken and undermine our party and accelerate the quest for a one-party state in our country.

We’ll resist any clandestine move

“However, the PDP wishes to state in very clear terms that we will not accept any attempt by anybody whatsoever, especially the APC to manipulate the process and rob us of our clear victories in these states or any other state for that matter.

“The APC must not in anyway take our civility driven by patriotic zeal for peace, unity and harmony in the country for granted. We want to state categorically that our members across the country are able, willing and ready to defend our mandate in these states using all available instruments within the ambit of the law.

“As a party that has made history by nurturing democracy for 16 years, and elevating it to a standard appreciated by the democratic community world over, we cannot fold our hands and watch while the gains are being undermined by the APC and its agents.

“It is on this note that the PDP draws the attention of the judiciary, INEC and security authorities to the heinous scheme by the APC to drag their institution and men into these criminal plots. In view of the above, therefore, we urge these institutions to closely monitor its officials involved in the elections and do every thing within the law to safeguard their reputation against the acts of a few greedy and dubious individuals.

“Finally, while we note that the APC should be held responsible should there be any breakdown of law and order in Rivers, Delta and Akwa Ibom states. We charge the people not to relent but to stand up and defend their mandates and use all means allowed by the law to ensure that their will expressed through the ballot box is not thwarted by desperate and greedy enemies of democracy.”

ABUJA —President-elect, General Mohammadu Buhari (retd), yesterday, reechoed that the high level of indiscipline and corruption in government and other social places were the main reasons why he has pledged to fight corruption, insecurity and unemployment head on when sworn in as President.
According to him, worse are the electoral fraud and judicial compromises which had characterized the courts.
Buhari spoke against the background of the manipulation of electoral process which he said played out in the last general elections.
Buhari, who was particular about Akwa Ibom State, was delighted when the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in the state, Mr Umana Umana, who led a delegation of Akwa Ibom people, including Senator Ita Enang, the Senate Committee Chairman on Business and Rules to pay him a congratulatory visit in Abuja informed him that he had gone to the Election Petition Tribunal to challenge the result of the governorship election in the state.
Recalling his experience at the courts, Buhari said he would strengthen the process to prevent subversion of the will of the people in future polls.
Buhari lauds Umana as A-Ibom APC goes to tribunal
He said: “I’m glad that you have gone to court too because you believe in the system as the right place to fight for your right and the right of the people you represent. I have appealed three times and arrived at the Supreme Court not because I believe the system had changed but this time around, in your own case, you were still denied even with the use of PVCs and the card readers.
“That means they will never stop lies because the essence of the system itself is to protect the interests of the parties, the candidates whether it is the local government elections, House of Assembly, governorship, House of Representatives, Senate etc.
“There is need to go to the constituency, educate them, beg for their support and understanding. Let them know the real essence according to law to choose who they want to choose otherwise we are wasting our time.
“I stand for that, that’s why I chose to go to court and ending up at the Supreme Court. I don’t go to court because I can afford it financially or physically but people who believe in stabilizing the system helped me along the line.
“Now the records are very clear. Anybody who wants to study the political development of Nigeria cannot do so without getting the Supreme’s Court judgement of those years —2003, 2007 and 2011. If you could recall in 2007, the Supreme Court was split into two. Six panel of justices were divided. Six justices led by Justice Oguntade, a Christian, a Yoruba man, Justice Aloma Mukthar, I think she’s a Muslin but a Yoruba woman and another Justice from Delta State said election of 2007 was null and void because it was not conducted according to law.
Nigeria’s problem is not ethnic or religious
“But the former Chief Justice, Mustapha, a Fulani man from Jigawa and another Chief Justice from Taraba, also a Fulani man said well, the election was not flawless but all the same PDP has won and then the Chief Justice, a Muslim from Nupe cancelled the votes with them. So it was four against three. So the point I want to make here is that the problem of Nigeria is not ethnic or religious, it is corruption.
“This is what we are fighting, that is why corruption is number three in my campaign. The first one is security. The north east, the Delta areas where people are kidnapped and ransom are being demanded which people cannot afford. The second one is unemployment. Sixty percent of Nigerians are youths, most of them, whether they went to school or not are unemployed and that is dangerous.
“So we have to get the issue of the economy right to make sure the jobs are made available and we should try to kill corruption before corruption kills Nigeria. Let us practice what we preach as well. Whoever wins as a governor too has a lot of work to do because corruption is fast becoming a culture and to try to caution people is not an easy task but it must be done.
“I know you all represent various constituencies, please pass our message and give them hope that we’ll do our best in the interest of all. I wish sincerely those that are going to tribunal the best of luck.”
Umana chronicles alleged massive rigging
Earlier in his speech, the governorship candidate, Umana, who chronicled the massive rigging that took place on April 11 informed the incoming president that he had approached the courts to challenge the results.
He said: “The people had hoped that there would be free and fair elections in Akwa Ibom State for them to vote and bring in APC government at the state and federal levels, so that the lot of the people of the state would change for the better.
“However, it is a matter for regret and a point of great frustration that our votes for you in Akwa Ibom State were not allowed to count during the Presidential election because of massive vote fraud and wanton violence.
“Your excellency, we would like to report that the governorship and House of Assembly elections held in the state on April 11, 2015 witnessed even worse degrees of electoral fraud and violence, leading to many deaths and injuries.
“We are a bit mollified that the incidents of widespread electoral malpractices and bloody violence that marred the purported elections in our state have been amply confirmed by independent local and international monitors, including the Civil Liberties Organisations, the Akwa Ibom State Caucus at the National Assembly, the African Union Election Monitoring Team, the European Union Election Monitoring Group, the US Government, represented by its embassy in Nigeria and many elders of the state, including former Governor Victor Attah and former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Atuekong Don Etiebet. Such reports go a long way to confirm our stand that there were no valid elections in Akwa Ibom State.
A-Ibom APC goes to tribunal
“We are pleased to inform you that we have challenged the outcome of the purported elections at the tribunals. It may interest you to know also that figures declared in the elections by the Akwa Ibom State INEC office were at variance significantly with figures captured by card readers and transmitted to INEC database in the commission office in Abuja.
“For instance, data obtained from INEC head office in Abuja show that the total number of accredited voters captured by card readers for the gubernatorial and House of Assembly elections in Akwa Ibom State was 437,128, but the figure declared by the state INEC office was 1,122,836. By INEC guidelines, use of the card reader was mandatory in the gubernatorial and House of Assembly elections.
Electoral reform
“Your position on electoral reform is, therefore apt, and we wish to commend you on your determination to reform and reposition the electoral process to make elections more credible in Nigeria.
“With specific reference to the manifold cases of violence and bloodshed that rocked our state before and during the general elections, we demand justice for the families of those who were killed and maimed. We also hope that those who masterminded those crimes of electoral violence and fraud would not be allowed to escape justice.”
Umana also pledged the support of Akwa Ibom people to the incoming administration, saying: “We hereby pledge to wholly cooperate with and remain loyal to your government, while fully committing everything at our disposal, including the best of our talents, to the success of your administration.”

The national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Alhaji Adamu Mu‘azu yesterday mocked the governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose, insisting that his deathwish advert on president-elect, Muhammadu Buhari led to the loss of President Goodluck Jonathan at the elections.
Muazu took to his verified Twitter handle, to mock Fayose with the post, “Fayose: I have evidence that Muazu worked for APC. We hope it’s not the kind of evidence he once said he had that Buhari was dying?”
This was a reaction to the earlier allegation by Fayose that he (Fayose) do have evidence that Mu’azu betrayed the PDP and worked for All Progressives Congress, APC during the presidential polls.
Governor Fayose had recently called for the resignation of Mu‘azu as national chairman, saying it was inexcusable that President Jonathan could have lost in Mu‘azu’s home state of Bauchi with an incumbent PDP governor, minister of Federal Capital Territory and the national chairman.
Fayose had pressed on to say that he had evidence that Mu‘azu was compromised as national chairman and worked for the APC.
Mu‘azu in yesterday’s tweet, challenged Fayose to come out with the evidence.
He wrote; “We challenge Governor Fayose to come out with the evidence that shows National Chairman worked for APC during the elections.”
He followed that with another tweet to buttress the support he gave to Fayose as a candidate, “The National chairman campaigned for Governor
Fayose, defended him and was at his inauguration and will continue to support him and Ekiti people.”
Fayose hits back
Fayose, whose twitter account handle had not been in use since April 29, responded within two hours, deriding Mu‘azu for taking to cyberspace to engage him.
“Disloyalty: A leader, who takes to twitter to slight a party member but never did the same with or to the opponent. God sees our hearts,” he wrote.
He was to follow up with a series of tweets like: “PDP will outlast many of us. The legacy of true politics is service to the People, loyalty to one’s team and a clear conscience before God,” followed by “I appreciate the online community of PDP supporters and will always champion our collective cause for a better Nigeria under God.”
In a seeming rebuke to the national chairman for directing his missiles at him, Fayose in another tweet urged the national chairman thus, “Any strong words we have are reserved only for our opponents and only in political season. This is now the time to unite for PDP and Nigeria.”
The tweet was against the background of claims that the presidency and associates of President Goodluck Jonathan were peeved by the refusal of Mu‘azu to use strong words against the APC’s presidential candidate, Muhammadu Buhari.
APC lawmakers scoff at gov
Meantime, Fayose’s arch-enemies yesterday latched on his face-off with the PDP national chairman to rob in their determination to unseat him.
Spokesman for the Ekiti 19APC members and factional speaker, Dr Adewale Omirin’s special adviser, Media, Mr Wole Olujobi asked rhetorically;
‘’What strong words does Fayose have for the opponents and when is he going to deploy those words?
‘’Instead of bracing up for the challenges of rebuilding his sunk party, the governor is engaging in muscle-flexing with the opponents that are busy working out strategies to deliver for the people of Nigeria to enable them get over the maladministration hang-over they were subjected in the last 16 years by PDP.
‘’Soon, very soon, Fayose shall have encounters with the Nigerian Law. APC advises him to prepare for enough words till that period when the supremacy of Nigerian Constitution shall take over from the scroll of impunity that the PDP-led administration has turned the supreme law of the land.’’

She spends her spare time in a similar way to many other ten-year-old girls - playing with Barbie dolls and making loom bands.
But the key difference between Esther Okade and other children her age is that she has been accepted to study for a university maths degree - despite not going to school.
Esther, from Walsall, West Midlands, has enrolled on an Open University course months after she passed her A-levels - and wants to study for a PhD before running her own bank.
The girl, who gained a C grade in her maths GCSE aged six, has joined the course which started this month. Her younger brother Isiah is already studying for his A-levels - also aged six.
The siblings are both home-schooled by their mother Omonefe, who has converted the living room of their semi-detached, three-bedroom house into a makeshift classroom.
Mathematician Mrs Okade, 37, said: ‘Esther is doing so well. She took a test recently and scored 100 per cent. Applying to the university was an interesting process because of her age.
‘We even had to talk to the vice-chancellor. After they interviewed her they realised that this has been her idea from the beginning. From the age of seven Esther has wanted to go to university.
But I was afraid it was too soon. She would say, “Mum, when am I starting?”, and go on and on and on. Finally, after three years she told me, “Mum, I think it is about time I started university now”.’
Mrs Okade added that Esther - who will study for her degree at home - was ‘flying’ and ‘so happy’ when she was accepted by the university, and wants to be a millionaire.
She said: ‘For now we want her to enjoy her childhood as well as her maths. By the time she was four I had taught her the alphabet, her numbers, and how to add, subtract, multiply and division.
‘I saw that she loved patterns so developed a way of using that to teach her new things. I thought I would try her with algebra, and she loved it more than anything.’
Another bright spark: In 1981 Ruth Lawrence (above , mom) from Brighton became the youngest person to pass the exam for Oxford University, as a ten-year-old - and graduated aged 13 with a first-class degree in maths
Esther stunned her parents last year when she achieved a B grade in her pure maths A-level.
She applied to the Open University last August - and after a phone interview, an essay and an exam, she was told in December that she had been accepted onto the course.
Her father Paul, 42, a managing director, added: ‘I cannot tell you how happy and proud I am as a father. The desire of every parent is to see their children exceed them, and take the family name to great heights, and my children have done just that.’

ABUJA—THE senator-elect for Delta Central senatorial district, Chief Ighoyota Amori, has described the former governor of Delta State, Chief James Ibori, as his idol and a man with a lot of political intellect.
Chief Amori, in an interview during the induction course for the newly elected National Assembly members in Abuja, explained that despite the age difference between them, the former governor encouraged him to become the governor of the state.
Fielding questions on the allegation in some quarters that he is a stooge of the former Governor Ibori, Amori denied the allegation, adding that he worked together with the then governor and that the legacies they left behind were still there for people to see.
He said: “First, you know that I am senior to James Ibori. I was in politics before him. Of course you know the role I played in his becoming the governor. I have been in politics since 1987. I have served in different capacities, I have been a councillor, I formed political parties long before James Ibori came into the political scene.
“I am senior to him. We are brothers, we are from the same place. How can a person who is more politically alive before James Ibori came, become a stooge of my younger brother? The age difference between me and Ibori is so significant that I cannot be his stooge.
“James Ibori is my idol. I worship him in the sense that he is a man with a lot of political intellect. We worked together and our glorious days in Delta State are known to everybody. So, you don’t need to be a stooge of James Ibori, you just need to complement his efforts.

The crisis in the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP deepened at the weekend just as reasons stoking the conflict that has pitched President Goodluck Jonathan and his aides against the National Working Committee, NWC of the party began to unfold. At the heart of the crisis, Vanguard learnt is the struggle for the soul of the party ahead of the 2019 presidential election.
Vanguard sources gathered that associates of President Jonathan are determined to shove away the Adamu Mu‘azu-led NWC in favour of a more pliable executive for the purpose of ensuring the return of President Jonathan as presidential candidate or in the alternative a candidate of their choice in 2019.
The NWC, Vanguard learnt was, however, looking beyond Jonathan with their eyes fixed on the Northeast for the 2019 presidential candidate with a leading chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC from that region in their sights.
Besides, authoritative sources also disclosed outstanding issues in the 2015 elections between presidency officials and the NWC over the handling of the election campaign in which party officials were complaining of their sidelining by the president.
Multiple sources also traced the quarrel between the PDP NWC and the presidency to the stout refusal of the National Chairman of the party, Alhaji Adamu Mu‘azu to reject the outcome of the presidential election as had been suggested to him by presidency officials even after the president had himself accepted the outcome of the elections.
Meanwhile, the NWC in a rejection of the presidency pressures is to inaugurate a 15-man committee to redesign the future of the party. The committee to be chaired by the deputy president of the Senate, Ike Ekweremadu, Vanguard gathered, will proclaim the new face of the party outside the considerations of the thoughts of the Jonathan presidency.
Meanwhile, leading figures in the NWC continued to reject the pressures on them to resign from office yesterday with the National Secretary of the party, Prof. Adewale Oladipo flaying the moves as part of a conspiracy to derail efforts to rebuild the party to its preeminent position in the country.
The battle line between the presidency and the NWC was firmly established last weekend after the Mu‘azu and the National Publicity Secretary in two different statements warned against efforts by presidency officials to instigate the sacking of the NWC.
The National Publicity Secretary, Chief Olisa Metuh, in his statement, had warned those he described as some ambitious aides and associates of President Goodluck Jonathan trying to use their closeness to him to cause crisis in the party and pave way for more defection to other parties.
Giving reasons for the squabble a high-level official said: “The thinking in the president’s camp is that after four years, Buhari would have done very badly and Nigerians would demand the return of President Jonathan and the president’s people know that there is no way he can get the ticket through the present NWC.”
The president’s discomfort with the NWC, it was learnt flowed from the lack of confidence the president had in the days leading to the campaign when he sidetracked the national officers of the party in marshalling his campaign.
The distrust between the presidency and the NWC flowed from what one party source said was the refusal of some critical members of the NWC to take some hard-line stance against the Buhari candidacy. Mu‘azu and Metuh, Vanguard gathered were especially faulted for throwing softballs at Buhari at the height of the campaign.
Even more, sources in Abuja disclosed that the suspicion against Mu‘azu peaked after he reportedly rejected entreaties to him by presidency officials to formally reject and instigate judicial proceedings against the outcome of the presidential elections.
Giving reasons for Mu‘azu’s rejection of the entreaty, a source privy to the development said:
“After the president conceded to Buhari senior PDP officials were called together to the villa where the decision was taken that Mu’azu should reject the INEC result and file a case against it, but Mu’azu rejected it that it was unthinkable since the president had already conceded,” one source disclosed.
Not long after, presidency aides through some governors mounted pressures on the NWC members to resign, a development that was stubbornly rebuffed by the NWC members. Not long after, some governors were said to have returned to the NWC members to tell them that the decision for them to resign came from the villa.
The villa like some other critical stakeholders in the party believes that the NWC members should resign from office having led the party to the worst electoral outing since the formation of the party 17 years ago.
The NWC members, however, rebuff the entreaty on the claim that they were impeded in their work by the decision of the president to put all his energies on the leadership of the Presidential Campaign Council, PCC and sideline the top hierarchy of the party.
Even the PCC it was learnt was itself also not well primed for its job. One of the state directors lamented that not once were the state directors called together for strategy meetings on how they would deliver the president.
“I met the director-general few days to the campaign and urged him to summon a strategy meeting for state directors but he told me not to worry that everything was on course, and you can see the outcome,” the state director disclosed.
In firmly rejecting pressures on him to resign, the national secretary of the party, Prof. Oladipo in a statement personally signed by him said his:
“It is therefore disheartening that rather than joining other well-meaning members of our great party in supporting the National Working Committee in the on-going re-engineering process to rebuild the PDP, some elders from our zone, particularly, a former Deputy National Chairman, Chief Olabode George, who should know, have instead resorted to divisive politics by attempting to instigate our members against one another.
“What our party needs now in the southwest and indeed across the country is for all hands to be on the deck as we work harmoniously in our determination to reposition the PDP to regain power in 2019. Our party members are by this therefore charged to watch out for individuals whose agenda is to sow seeds of discord and pave way for crisis within our fold for their selfish interests.
“The National Working Committee is now more than ever before determined to rebuild the PDP and restore its glory as the preeminent political party in Nigeria.”
Meanwhile, the party yesterday unveiled the composition of the 15-man committee that is expected to review the outcome of the last general elections and give a direction of the way to go in the future.
The committee is made up of Governor Godswill Akpabio of Akwa Ibom State; Governor Theodore Orji of Abia State; Governor Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo; Governor-elect of Rivers, Nyesom Wike; Minister of Education, Ibrahim Shekarau; former governor of Niger State, Abdulkadir Kure; Deputy Speaker, House of Representatives, Emeka Ihedioha; Minister of Interior. Mr. Abba Moro; Alh. Adamu Waziri; Sen. Ahmed Makarfi; Chief Makanjuola Ogundipe Chief Pegba Otemolu and Mrs. Funmi Ayoola, has the Secretary, PDP Board of Trustees, BoT, Sen. Walid Jibril as Member and Secretary.
