There are certain good things, some of which are supposed be very good SERVANTS of Man, but sometimes become glorified and idolized by people, including Christians. In the Old times, God warned people against the Idolatry of images, creatures, etc: Exod.20.4 - "You SHALL NOT MAKE for yourself a carved image--any likeness of ANYTHING that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; God requires that we worship and serve him ONLY: Matt.4.10 - Then Jesus said to him, "Away with you, Satan! For it is written, "You shall WORSHIP the LORD your God, and Him ONLY you shall SERVE."' Therefore, IDOLATRY is the LOVE, worship and the SERVING of other things (living or nonliving things). However, the most common forms of IDOLS or gods especially in Christendom today are not necessarily images and the likes. But things that are LOVED and cherished very much by people. So loved and cherished that God and His kingdom gets CROWDED OUT of people's hearts and minds. Jesus himself said: Matt.6.24 - "No one can SERVE TWO MASTERS; for either he will HATE the one and LOVE the other, or else he will be LOYAL to the one and DESPISE the other. Some of these idols or gods worshipped and served by men, including good and prominent Religious people include: 1. Money/Material things - this is surely one of the greatest idols in the world of all time, which the devil, the god of this world uses to ENSLAVE people. The Bible refers to it as Mammon: Matt. 6:24b You CANNOT serve God and MAMMON. 2. People's opinions/approvals: This is yet another great idol, which is the worship of Human Beings and their opinions, honours/glory, praises, acceptance, admirations, flatteries and other POSITIVE reactions: Gal.1.10 - Obviously, I'm NOT TRYING to be a "people pleaser"! NO, I am trying to PLEASE God. If I were still trying to please people, I WOULD NOT BE Christ's SERVANT. John.5.41 - "Your approval or disapproval MEANS NOTHING to me, 3. Entertainment/Pleasures: These include Music (like Secular or Christian ROCK), Films (Christian films or not), SPORTS, ETC. These are tools the enemy uses to get people's minds away from God by making them BUSY DOING NOTHING in general: 2Tim.3.4 - They will betray their friends, be reckless, be puffed up with pride, and LOVE PLEASURE rather THAN God. If we are serious, we would be seeking God's grace to ESCAPE the traps of this MODERN IDOLATRY in Common Churches, and in the World at large. 2Tim.3.1 - You should also KNOW THIS, Timothy, that in the LAST DAYS there will be very DIFFICULT TIMES. 2Tim.3.2 - For people will LOVE ONLY themselves and THEIR MONEY... There are many excellent Religious Teachers with good appearances and eloquence, but wouldn't major on the reality of the Cross: the life of Jesus. Because they wouldn't want to OFFEND their people or followers, and LOSE their members thereby. There is ONLY ONE WAY that leads to life, which is the NARROW WAY which Jesus and his apostles did preach. But when the Preacher's MIND is on Money and Popularity: to gather great Crowd and have a great name in the world, then COMPROMISE and LIES would be certain. He would definitely have to BOW the knee and hold hands with the devil to become GREAT by WATERING DOWN his message to sooth his hearers by mixing psychology with the gospel, and saying NICE things to stir their emotions and attention. Jesus couldn't care less for people's Money, Opinions or appearing COOL and acceptable to them. And when MANY of his followers got offended with what he preached, he just LET THEM GO: John 6:66 KJV From that time MANY of his disciples WENT BACK, and walked NO MORE with him. Then he faced his remaining TWELVE disciples: John 6:67 KJV Then said Jesus unto the twelve, Will ye also GO AWAY? Although, those WORDS were really strong, but these were NOT willing to WALK AWAY: John 6:68 KJV Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to WHOM SHALL WE GO? thou hast the WORDS OF ETERNAL LIFE. The Words of God, commandments of Jesus are meant to be kept in our hearts, not just in the head: Ps.119.11 - Your word I have HIDDEN IN MY HEART ("not just in the HEAD), That I might NOT SIN against You. Bible knowledge and good understanding of scriptures in the head just puffs us up, making us think we're spiritual when we're not, and maybe terribly lost as well. 1Cor.8.1 - ... We know that we all have KNOWLEDGE. Knowledge PUFFS UP, but love edifies. Those Words of Jesus were NOT primarily given for the purpose of preaching, teaching, or to be studied as a subject; but to be OBEYED by every true follower of Jesus: John.14.15 - "If you love Me, KEEP My "commandments". And these commandments of Jesus are recorded in the New testament, especially in the book of Matthew (see His First Sermon in chap. 5, 6, and 7), Mark, Luke and John. Having good understanding of the Bible and Religious knowledge in the Head is of NO USE if we are not seeking to humble ourselves and OBEY them. We should be real DOERS of the Word by God's grace, and NOT just being EMPTY speakers, readers and hearers of it. Jas.1.22 - But be DOERS of the Word, and not hearers only, DECEIVING yourselves. Matt.7.24 - "Therefore whoever HEARS these sayings of Mine, and DOES THEM, I will liken him to a WISE man who built his house on the ROCK: Matt.7.25 - and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it DID NOT FALL, for it was FOUNDED ON THE ROCK. Matt.7.26 - "But everyone who hears these sayings of Mine, and DOES NOT DO them, will be like a FOOLISH man who built his house on the SAND: Let's remember that the devil, demons, False Prophets, and the wicked in general also know the Bible very well. What the Lord requires of us FIRST is Obedience, not sacrifices or religious activities. All sacrifices or good activities that are not birthed out of pure obedience to Jesus is as dead as any DEAD thing. We sometimes try to hide under the roofs of so many things like fasting and praying, vigils, tithing, preaching/evangelism, praise and worship, speaking in tongues, giving to the needy, not committing some OUTWARD SINS, attending church meetings, constant prayer of forgiveness, and so on. Yes, some of that can be FANTASTIC, but it's got to be rooted in obedience FIRST: 1 Samuel 15:22 KJV ... Behold, to OBEY is BETTER than sacrifice, and to hearken THAN the FAT of rams. (like FAT Monies or Gifts) John.14.15 - "If you LOVE Me, KEEP My commandments. We must seek to get rid of those Religious excuses, shortcuts, sacrifices we try to use to BRIBE God instead of OBEYING his words as recorded in Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. John 8:31-32 KJV Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye CONTINUE IN MY WORD, then are ye my DISCIPLES INDEED; [32] And ye shall KNOW the truth, and the TRUTH shall make you FREE. First, I wouldn't like to be termed as part of some certain types of Religious/Church critics, because many of them DO NOT follow the truth themselves. It's a greater deception or hypocrisy to ignore the great LOG in our own eyes, and start bothering about the speck in another person. It's true I no longer follow lots of "great" Christian Leaders and Church movements anymore, but yet, I HATE NOR ENVY NO ONE! What I HATE is DECEPTION or Religious Lies. For instance, if a neighbour is SICK, I won't HATE him, but the SICKNESS in him. And Church Deception is a Sickness (spiritually), because it dishonours or CONTRADICTS Jesus. So, from what I've learnt, I'm only trying to share the CURE for this sickness to those who are WILLING to LISTEN. Right, the topic above is quite controversial, and I'm sure many people, including Pastors and Elders of Churches won't be particularly happy with it. But we got obey and please Jesus NOT MEN. (Gal. 1:10) The thing is, the New Covenant unlike the OLD, is NOT about the LAW, but obedience through LOVE in Christ. Here was what Jesus said about the great commandments: Matt.22.37 - Jesus said to him, ""You shall LOVE the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.' Matt.22.39 - And the second is like it: "You shall LOVE your neighbor as yourself.' And then he concluded by saying: Matt.22.40 - On these TWO commandments hang ALL the Law and the Prophets (means Old testament)." In Matthew chap. 23 (vs 23), Jesus was talking HARSHLY to some HYPOCRITICAL old covenant people to TITHE: the Scribes and Pharisees, who wouldn't SUBMIT themselves to FOLLOW Jesus. Moreover, He was NEVER referring to his Disciples NOR EVEN the multitudes (prospective disciples) See Matt. Chap. 23:13-25 What Jesus and his Apostles did teach was CHEERFUL GIVING: NO MORE COMPULSORY GIVING/TITHING/Religious Activities/Etc: 2Cor.9.7 - So let each one GIVE as he PURPOSES in his heart, NOT GRUDGINGLY or of NECESSITY; for God loves a CHEERFUL GIVER. Luke 6:38 KJV GIVE, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down... Matthew 5:42 KJV GIVE to him that ask... Whatever is not done in love is a Dead Work. 1 Cor. Chap. 13 The language of the law was "compulsion": 'Thou shalt', 'Thou shalt not'. While that of Jesus is, "When you fast, when you Give, if you... John.14.15 - "If you LOVE Me, keep My commandments. Are we still struggling with the LAWS/Rules of Moses/Pastors/Churches, OR we are walking in Obedience through the LOVE of Christ? Rom.10.4 - For Christ is THE END of the Law for righteousness to EVERYONE WHO BELIEVES. Therefore, even if we WANT to give 10% or 50% or 80% or 100% of our Money, Time, Energy, and others, It should all be done CHEERFULLY, not by FORCE. For God LOVES a cheerful giver. Jesus told the Religious Men seeking to get a SIGN from him: Matthew 12:39 KJV But he answered and said unto them, An evil and adulterous generation seeketh after a SIGN; and there shall NO SIGN be given to it, BUT THE SIGN OF THE PROPHET Jonas: So, what's the Sign of Jonas? It simply symbolizes the Death and the Resurrection of Jesus. Therefore, having the finished work of the Cross of Jesus Christ of DENYING THE FLESH and taking up the own CROSS is a much greater SIGN to glorify God. However, we should ALSO trust God in prayer for earthly SIGNS or MIRACLES for our needs too. But should NOT be made MORE important, or greater than the REALITY of the CROSS of Christ in our daily lives: Matt.10.38 - And he who DOES NOT take his CROSS and FOLLOW after Me IS NOT WORTHY OF ME. ayomilore:Friend, if you're a true follower of Jesus, you don't need "compulsive tithing". I mean, not trying to debate or convince anyone, but in the New testament, Jesus and the apostles taught cheerful giving not tithing. Some like to quote Matt. 23:23, but Jesus was speaking strongly to the Pharisees (religious hypocrites under the LAW), not his disciples (his true followers). So, if any true follower of Jesus wants to give, even if it's just 10%, it should be given cheerfully, not out of compulsion or by force as in common Churches today. CHEERFUL GIVING, NO MORE COMPULSIVE TITHING 2 Corinthians 9:7 KJV Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him GIVE ; "not grudgingly", or of "necessity": for God loveth a CHEERFUL GIVER. Many Christians and religious people in general are unfortunately always after Men for Signs and Wonders. That's why their chances of ever getting TRULY SAVED are "very very slim". But only having an imaginary Salvation of common Men/Church: just a form of godliness. (2 Tim. 3:5) When HEALING, worldly breakthroughs, achievements, RICHES and other CARES of this life become MORE important to us than OBEDIENCE to Jesus according to the new testament, then there is serious BLINDNESS OR DARKNESS to follow. That's when people will begin to BACKSLIDE or compromise their faith in Jesus. Well, for some it may not be called backsliding because they might have never SLID FORWARD in the first place. But only going much deeper into darkness by going to UNSAVED Prophets/Soothsayers for help. These False Men/Prophets who have been BLINDED by the god of this WORLD through the LOVE of Money and Popularity (like Balaam/Judas and Demas), will however get them by the HEAD, and feast heavily on them: BRAINWASH them until the TRUTH becomes REAL FOOLISHNESS to them. Making them FIXED SLAVES of their Religious Business (called Churches). Even the Great Religious people, Scribes and Pharisees of old were also great experts at seeking SIGNS from Jesus: Matt.12.38 - Then some of the Pharisees and teachers of the law said to him, "Teacher, we WANT TO SEE a Miraculous SIGN from you." Then He replied: Matt.12.39 - He answered, "A WICKED and ADULTEROUS generation ASKS for a miraculous sign! But NONE will be GIVEN it EXCEPT the sign of the prophet Jonah. (His death and resurrection) Jesus was saying something like: "You don't want to GET RID OF YOUR ADULTERY with the World: WICKEDNESS and SINS. But you want me to ENTERTAIN or satisfy you by showing you a SIGN, like a Magician or a False Prophet?" The purpose of Signs and Wonders in Jesus ministry to the world is to cause UNBELIEVERS hearing the gospel for the FIRST TIME to "believe" the gospel. However, Jesus doesn't work Signs and Wonders readily for people like many Pastors/Prophets and Evangelists want us to believe in their MOUTHWATERING Adverts for Crusades. Many of these people in all these GREAT CRUSADES are UNREPENTANT Sinners, who have HEARD the gospel countless times, and are just there to USE God to get HEALED, breakthroughs, wealthy, and for other SELFISH reasons. No doubt, God uses some of these "great" crusades or big meetings to MEET WITH a very tiny amount of people for his purposes. But God knows the hearts of ALL, including the Preacher himself: they can fool people NOT Him. Our focus should be MORE on humbling ourselves, getting rid of Evil: Sins or Wickedness; Obedience to Jesus FIRST, then we can get GRACE to overcome ALL problems of Life (Matt. 6:33). So as NOT CONTINUE being victims of BLIND LEADERS of the blind: Matt.15.14 - LEAVE THEM; they are BLIND guides. If a BLIND MAN leads a blind man, both will FALL INTO a pit." (Hell) Matt.24.24 - For false christs and false prophets will rise and show Great Signs and Wonders to deceive, if possible, even the ELECT. Matt.24.25 - See, I have TOLD YOU beforehand. IF you still wish to reread a bit carefully later, then take not of the HOWEVER in the fifth paragraph. Moreover, you don't NEED to agree, mention or even read my posts. If you've noticed that my messages do not dance to your tune, do well to look for others that do. I seek to glorify Jesus not Men/Church, nor even myself. Like I said before, I can only engage in discussions with anyone for edification or building up, NOT for argument or debating. And it's quite pathetic the way you keep jumping around "majoring" on Minors, instead of Majors. Now, here is the major thing: are you born again or saved yet? Do you love Jesus with ALL your heart, strength and might? Do you love your neighbours? Do you keep and obey the words of Jesus according to Matt. Mark, Luke and John, and NOT living in conscious Sins? Do you love Jesus above all things, even your own life? Philippians 2:12-13 KJV Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your OWN salvation with Fear and Trembling. Kobojunkie:Friend, you don't have to agree with me if you don't want to. I'm only willing to get into discussion with anyone who needs me to teach him, or for me to learn from them myself. Since you've tried to water down verses I gave you by Paul, inspired by the Holy Spirit. What you quoted were true, but you shouldn't believe a part and decide that some parts are of none effect. As if the Holy Spirit made a mistake: ALL were inspired, remember. We must beware of committing sins by speaking evil of others behind their backs. Especially of believers and true servants of God; and there by opposing the TRUTH. It's better to keep QUIET than to OPPOSE the truth. However, some Religious Men tried to accuse and oppose Jesus, and he said: Matt.12.32 - Anyone who SPEAKS a word against the Son of Man, it will be FORGIVEN him; BUT whoever SPEAKS AGAINST the Holy Spirit, it will NOT be forgiven him, either in this age or in the age to come. The sin against the Holy Spirit is when a person's heart is so hardened that he/she NO LONGER WANT TO REPENT. Which may lead to evil speaking of the Holy Spirit; speaking evil of the truth, and other sins. @petra1 Friend, don't worry if you don't seem to need that message. Those that do will surely understand and give God glory. Remember, Jesus didn't condemn repentant sinners, but was always rebuking and exposing the Pharisees, Sadducees, Scribes, Money changers and other Religious Hypocrites of his time. Exposing those same things I mentioned in the post. You should know that by common sins I meant outward sins, while greater sins should mean inward or secret sins of the heart which is far worse. When it comes to Salvation in Christ, it's NOT JUST about repenting or turning away from common SINS alone, but actually TURNING AWAY from all SINS and every form WORLDLINESS altogether. In other words, Worldliness is Sinful, and it's of the devil as much as common Sins. Worldliness is simply the LOVE of the World and the things in it. NOT the need or the use of those necessary or useful things of the world, but the LOVE of them (i.e Money and Material things). It's unfortunate that many Christians, even GREAT Pastors/Preachers have got no light on that yet. They use hours to preach and exhort people on common Sins and some outward form of worldliness: adultery, fornication, seductive dressing, wearing of jewelry, etc. But would NOT necessarily major on "GREATER WORLDLINESS": the Love of Money, Love of Popularity/Honour/Glory of Men or People, and every form of Selfishness and Pride in general. They also spend SPECIAL hours on making SERMONS about how to MAKE MONEY for themselves by preaching OLD COVENANT TITHING, First fruits, Sowing of Seeds and Making of Monetary VOWS (some don't even exist in the Old covenant), etc. However, before Jesus declared that SALVATION had come in a Man's house back then, FIRST, here was what the man said: Luke.19.8 - But Zacchaeus stood up and said to the Lord, "Look, Lord! Here and now I GIVE half of my possessions to the poor, and IF I HAVE CHEATED ANYBODY out of anything, I will PAY BACK four times the amount." In other words, Zacchaeus wasn't just turning away from COMMON SINS like sexual sins, fighting, murder, lying, etc. But also from a GREATER PART of Sin and Worldliness which is the LOVE OF MONEY and STINGINESS or lack of CHEERFUL giving. Interesting, in the following verse, Jesus replied him: Luke.19.9 - Jesus responded, "SALVATION HAS COME to this home today, for this man HAS SHOWN HIMSELF to be a son of Abraham. In that case, MANY professing Christians, including Pastors, Church founders and all are NOT CONVERTED YET. Because their VERSION of salvation has not necessarily SAVED them from the Love of Money. But alas, they have EVEN become GREATER LOVER OF MONEY. They tell LIES using Jesus and the Holy Spirit to PROPHESY to make money; and start living luxuriously like CELEBRITIES, using the Poor's money to build MANSIONS and resources that ONLY the Rich can afford. One of the worst things there is MANY believers see them and say something like "Boy, what a GREAT Man of God! No, they're NOT, they are just RELIGIOUS CELEBRITIES: NOT of the Lord Jesus! Moreover, "unlike" Zacchaeus, I THINK Jesus would say to them: "Salvation HAS NOT YET COME to these Houses: they should GET RID of their LOVE OF MONEY, POPULARITY WITH THE WORLD, and Wickedness FIRST": 1John.2.15 - DO NOT LOVE the world or the THINGS in the world. If ANYONE LOVES the world, the LOVE of the Father IS NOT in him. These and others have brought DISHONOUR to the name of Jesus among SINNERS and atheists, making them worse off, without much hope of coming to Jesus to be SAVED from the damnation of Hell. It's good to be good by doing good. It's nice to be religious: attending fellowship meetings; denying oneself; praying and fasting; helping others, giving for God's work; preaching the gospel; etc. However, that's NOT THE FIRST THING required by Jesus: John.14.15 - "If you LOVE me, OBEY my Commandments. (NOT activities FIRST) There are many Christians who haven't understood this elementary aspect fully well. Many were just told to come forward to repeat the sinners prayer, and maybe sign some church or denominational forms to be part of them. It is not a bad idea to fellowship in a local church (if you find one with a Christlike leader, though), BUT Jesus NEVER made GOING to Church the FIRST thing to be done: Matt.19.17 - ... But if you WANT TO ENTER into Life, KEEP the commandments." And these commandments are scattered through the New testament, but especially in Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. Moreover, what's the use of going to Church without FIRST LOVING JESUS with ones WHOLE heart, and then KEEPING the commandments? I don't mean the Old Covenant life of the "10 Commandments, Tithing, First fruits, Holy days, Ceremonial laws, etc. BUT of the NEW COVENANT of the Spirit which is in LOVE: Matt.22.37 - Jesus said to him, ""You shall LOVE the LORD your God with ALL your heart, with ALL your soul, and with ALL your mind.' Matt.22.38 - This is the FIRST and GREAT commandment. Matt.22.39 - And the SECOND is like it: "You shall LOVE your neighbor as yourself.' Nonetheless, what's the use of being CALLED a Believer/Christian/Pastor/Prophet/Bishop/Brother/Sister and so on, when we still LOVE MONEY, the honour or glory of Men MORE THAN Jesus: it's POINTLESS! This is what leads to DEAD WORKS: works that are NOT acceptable to God because they are NOT done in LOVE for God. They are works birthed out of the LUST TO MAKE MONEY or get HONOUR in the NAME of Jesus. Such might be acceptable to Men/Church, but NOT to Jesus. And the bible says we got to REPENT of Dead Works: Hebrews 6:1 KJV Therefore leaving the principles of the DOCTRINE of Christ, let us go on unto PERFECTION; not laying again the foundation of REPENTANCE FROM DEAD WORKS, and of faith toward God... Works under the LAW (either of Moses or Any Pastor/Man) too are NOW DEAD WORKS. But WORKS done in LOVE of God are acceptable. For instance, if you GIVE or DO something religious, and you don't do or give it CHEERFULLY, it is a DEAD WORK. That's why MANY of our religious works including many common Church activities, Tithing, Fasting and Praying, Praise and Worship, Evangelism, etc are DEAD WORKS if they are not DONE IN LOVE but of COMPULSION or by FORCE: merely to PLEASE Men or people in general: 2Cor.9.7 - So let each one GIVE as he PURPOSES in his heart, NOT grudgingly or of necessity; for God "loves" a CHEERFUL GIVER. Are we still under the Law of Moses/Pastors, or of the Spirit of Love in Jesus? Are we doing lots of things merely to PLEASE Religious Men or People but NOT cheerfully?
