That's one of the not so easy questions, i would only share my thoughts/opinions . There are differences in its understanding and that is permitted. It's teaching is not saving faith or something required for us to be saved or whatever. i was trying to explain something similar to italo about holding differing positions/understandings. Again, my THOUGHTS are that Esau made a mistake AND God knew before they were born. i think it is so because God is omniscient. Being omniscient doesn't exactly mean that He did it, but that He knew it. i think its like a pregnant woman going to the doctor and the doctor knows the gender of the baby, time of delivery, health of the baby etc. It's a projection of knowledge that was not feasible about two centuries ago. The doctor knows but is not necessarily the cause. Also, things can change in between, like there may be premature delivery or death or some other thing caused by other factors. i think that is the way God sees us, though in a more advanced way. He can project as it were, but of course there needs to be a conception before a projection as it were. He probably has various simulations from the sperm cells and eggs, the millions of scenarios into the future, and then zoomed in into the lucky sperm. i'll call it an omniscient permission, not a sentence.

Omniprescence and omnipotence reduces your excuse to shambles....

There is more than one book. This verse above says the dead were judged out of those things which were written in THE BOOKS which was according to their works. It is different from the BOOK of life that was described as another and kept aside.

I believe the book of life, the lambs book of life, the book of rememberance, the book that has our tears (David mentioned) or the strands of our hair (Jesus mentioned) are amongst the various books.

If the dead are judged by their works,what now happens to those who did not witness the "good news" and did bad things?...."hell"?
