Business / Re: Why Can't A Country Just Keep Printing Money And Become Rich by Davozy: 3:49am On Jun 02, 2016
Georgry:
Hello Nairalanders....

Knowing fully that a country have the right to print money as much as they desire, and their is no limit to the quantity of money a country can print, this question comes to my mind:

Why can't a country just keep printing money to the stage that it will be enough for every body in the country to be rich..

Economist in the house your explanation is needed here.....

In inflation, everything gets valuable except money. This is something every country fears. You end up using large sum of money in purchasing very little goods or services.

THE BUSINESS OF PALM KERNEL IN NIGERIA

Palm Kernel in Nigeria is where most farmers make Millions silently.

If you are Nigerian an usually went home to the village during the Christmas.

At one point in time or another, you would have done

this before.

Though it was a tough process trying to get the kernel out of the shell, it’s gradually becoming an easy and very lucrative business.

One that pays thousands of Naira per each ton.

Dsrooftiles:
We all knew she was working on her weight but this new photo of her is just simply amazing!

She shared it some minutes ago on instagram with this caption below:
You lose weight, maybe three or four pounds maybe much more. But you slip, have a bad day, or a "weak moment" and you eat something you shouldn't have. And what do you tell yourself? 'Now I've completely blown it!' I might as well really binge!

Wow!like the new look

Beware the trap of perfectionism - aim to eat sensibly and healthily most of the time not all the time. Don't live under a self imposed dictatorship.
We all eat more than we should of the wrong kind of stuff now and then. Think of your weight as something that (once you've reached a healthy weight) can go up and down to some extent.

Have a 'sliding scale' in your mind of a couple of pounds either side your target weight. Everyone's weight fluctuates a bit and you should prepare for this. No one can live for long under a self imposed too harsh dictatorship. The whole idea is to enjoy the journey because it's the journey of a lifetime. Change what 'treats' mean to you.
Like I always say it's a mind game: all our lives we have been brainwashed; from childhood it's drummed into us that "treats" consist of fatty, sugary empty calorific stodge.
So what happens next? We start eating healthily and suddenly we have no treats. We feel deprived.

Of course a treat is whatever you decide it is. Is it really a treat to clog arteries, add unsightly fat, feel bad about yourself, risk diabetes and heart disease? Then out of guilt go on a binge?
Write down five treats that don't involve enhancing fat or sugar. Whether the treat is calling a friend, going for a walk, or even having a cup of special tea or coffee, we can all reward and comfort ourselves. It's how we do it that counts. Weight loss is not a cure-all
Don't expect weight loss to cure all of life's problems. Sure you'll be healthier, fitter and so on, and that will have positive and maybe unexpected positive ripple effects but, as a slimmer person, you'll still have a bad day in the office, moments of self doubt, times when you feel undervalued.
Believe it or not, many people feel let down when they become slimmer and then find that being slim doesn't solve all their problems in one go (i discovered that the hard way and it was a painful reality) to be continued.

Phones / Re: Ntel Unveils Rollout Plan, Begins Commercial Sales Of 0804 Lines April 8 by Davozy: 12:00pm On Apr 02, 2016
morikee:
ntel, the newest entrant into the telecommunications space, has unveiled plans for the first phase rollout of its commercial services to the public.

Its Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Kamar Abass, while announcing the rollout plan in Lagos yesterday, said ntel would begin the first phase rollout with the commercial sales of its 0804 mobile line on April 8 in Lagos and Abuja.

He said although the company acquired some base transceiver stations (BTS) from the old NITEL, it also entered partnership agreement with IHS and Helios Towers, builders of BTS and other telecoms infrastructure, to roll out 600 base stations for the commercial rollout in Lagos and Abuja, with plans to extend the rollout plan to Port Harcourt with additional 200 BTS, also known as base stations.

According to Abass, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), the telecommunications industry regulator, has approved all licence authorisations necessary for ntel to launch its Voice over LTE (VoLTE) network using next generation telecommunications infrastructure for its first phase rollout in April.
He said ntel had deployed 200 kilometres of metro fibre optic transmission cables in Lagos, Abuja and Port Harcourt, for seamless network connectivity during the rollout.

The CEO of ntel also added that ntel had deployed LTE Advanced, the latest 4G technology with multi-antennae sites.

“We are rolling out physical sites in three cities on our 900MHz and 1800MHz bands to launch Voice over LTE come April 8, 2016. We have signed agreements with trade partners and fulfilled all licence authorisations and payments and we are up-to-date and there are no impediments to our launch,” he said.

Abass said Natcoms Investments Limited, the parent company of ntel has projected over $1 billion investments over the next four years, for its rollout plan, which he said, would be in phases.

To ensure smooth take off of its mobile network rollout plan, ntel has completed the construction of Tier III Datacentre as well as reactivation of SAT-3 submarine international fibre optic cable.

Natcoms had last year paid $252.52 million to acquire the assets of the defunct first national operator (NITEL), to begin commercial operation on its mobile network. Noting that despite the growth of the telecoms sector in Nigeria which has seen voice subscriptions rise from less than 60,000 in 2001 to over 147 million as at 2015, he expressed fears that broadband usage has only grown by 20 per cent. He said NATCOM has come to fill the gap bringing Nigerians unfettered access to full mobile broadband both on voice and data services.

“Over the next four and half years, the total number of mobile broadband customers alone will be greater than all of the customers that have come into the market on mobile since its inception. In other words, we are at a point where a major transformation is in the making. You will see 168 million mobile broadband customers coming into existence between now and the end of 2019, which is more than all the mobile customers in both narrow and broadband that we have seen in the last 15 years.”

“That sounds like an enormous transformation. When it comes to the supply of broadband services, we are unique because we have more spectrum which can deliver more output than any network available today and potentially any network in the future. The spectrum we have has unique features which can not be compared with any other spectrum band,” Abass said.

Actually as for crop farming, it depends on the kind of project you are embarking on. If you want to irrigate and you aren't close to a water body, you'd definitely not want to drill a borehole on a leased land. However, like the poster above me said, if you just want a short-term gig then it's better to lease.

Thanks caesaraba. Crop farming is what I have in mind but with lease, I know I have certain restrictions and like you said, I can't dig a bore hole on a leased farm should invade neither can I build a barn.

Am seriously debating it.

Politics / Re: In Pictures, Meet The 'Wives' Of Boko Haram by Davozy: 10:44am On Apr 01, 2016
AnnaKareninaFan:
By Andy Spyra/Siobhán O’Grady for FOREIGN POLICY

Laraba Bitrus was working in a small grocer’s shop in the northeastern Nigerian town of Gwoza when Boko Haram militants invaded. With nowhere to run, the armed men took her captive, beat her with a whip, and forced her to watch as they sawed off her uncle’s head. After 11 days, she fled on foot, traveling through the bush to Madagali, where she stayed until the extremists took over that small town as well, forcing her to flee again: this time further south to Yola, the capital of Adamawa state, where she now lives in the catholic St. Theresa's refugee camp.

She was one of the lucky ones.

More than six years into their bloody campaign in northern Nigeria and the surrounding Lake Chad region, Boko Haram extremists have killed around 20,000 people. Entire villages have been razed to the ground; men and boys executed or forcibly recruited to join the militants’ ranks; and women and girls taken against their will as wives and household slaves. As part of the group’s brutal effort to establish an Islamic caliphate ruled under a strict interpretation of sharia, its militants have conducted mass rape.

And though Yola is safer than the most besieged areas of the country farther north, it is not free from the fear imposed by the group, which pledged allegiance to the Islamic State in March 2015. Thousands of displaced people are still seeking shelter in the city of 350,000 residents. Despite some critical military successes on the part of the Nigerian government, and a regional taskforce supported by Chad, Niger, Cameroon, and Benin, which have caused the group to lose control of much of its territory (an area once estimated as the size of Belgium), Boko Haram continues to terrorize parts of Nigeria.

Women are especially vulnerable.

These photographs were taken in a safe location in Yola, away from the St. Theresa's refugee camp on a hot day in January. There was a single room set aside, where these portraits — of some 40 women — could be taken in relative quiet from the morning through the afternoon. Apart from the bits of conversation and interview, the only noise was the audible click of the camera’s shutter. The only source of light came from the room’s one window.

As these women — the ones who chose to speak of their captivity — shared pieces of their stories, an air of defiance permeated the room. It varied from woman to woman in its intensity, but it never entirely disappeared.

Mary John Ibrahim, a Christian woman in her early 50s, was working in the government hospital in Gwoza when Boko Haram overran the area and burned down the hospital.

With many other residents, she fled in panic to the bush, only to be later captured by Boko Haram and brought back to Gwoza, where she was held for two weeks. During that time, she was forced to convert to Islam; when she refused, she was beaten severely and starved as punishment. One night, she was able to flee and hide in the mountains along the Cameroonian border, where, for one month, she was hidden and fed by local Muslims, who later on helped her cross the border to Cameroon.

During the takeover of Gwoza, 60-year-old Tani Bitrus was captured alongside 50 other women by Boko Haram. Her husband was executed by fighters.

During her monthlong captivity, she and the other women were compelled at gunpoint to learn Islamic teachings; when they confessed to being unable to read the Quran, the women were beaten. One day, while on the way to the market, Tani and three other women escaped, helped by Muslim women of the same Salidva tribe. Eventually, they escaped to Cameroon and, after that, to the St. Theresa's camp in Yola.

But oftentimes, instead of returning to supportive communities, those women who manage to escape Boko Haram return to an unexpected stigma. According to a February report published by UNICEF and International Alert, these women are often referred to as “Boko Haram wives.” And for those who become pregnant after being raped in captivity, their children are thought tainted because they have “bad blood.”

Many of the women from Gwoza — like Laraba, Mary John, and Tani, who now live in the St. Theresa's camp — are afraid to go home.

Health / Re: One In Every Four Nigerian Has Mental Disorder - Dr. Vincent Udenze by Davozy: 10:29am On Mar 31, 2016
GurlFriend:
According to the Medical Director, Synapse Services Resource Centre, Dr. Vincent Udenze, one in every four Nigerian is living with one form of mental disorder or another.

Udenze further noted that one in seven persons would suffer a serious episode of mental illness in their lifetime.

Udenze made this startling prognosis at the inauguration of the centre at Lekki, Lagos.

According to the mental health specialist, Nigerians suffer the consequences of mental health problems due to the acute shortage of registered health facilities and the stigma attached to the condition.

Udenze added, “One in every four Nigerian has one form of mental disorder and one in every seven will suffer serious mental health problems. This is a conservative estimate, considering that many Nigerians with mental challenges do not seek help because they do not want people to stigmatise them and their families.”

He also lamented that the majority of the health care institutions in the country paid less attention to mental illness cases.

He said, “Look around, we have got over 50 government hospitals looking after pregnant women. We have thousands of private hospitals and maternal homes for women and children. How many mental health facilities are in Lagos with a population of over 18 million people? They are very few.

“If you provide the environment, facility and make people aware that it exists, you will be surprised at the response you are going to get. The truth is that the government will never be able to do enough in tackling the menace of mental health because it does not have enough resources for that.

“While the government is doing what it can, the private sector, non-governmental organisations, and individuals must come together to address stigma and provide facilities for those who need treatment before they fall into the wrong hands.”

To make a difference, Udenze said the centre would establish more centres in the state, just as its foundation would provide free treatment for indigent patients.

Education / Re: How Has Nairaland Transformed Your Life? by Davozy: 5:40am On Mar 31, 2016
Capableben:
How has Nairaland transformed your life?

I started my "Nairaland journey" as a guest viewer.
I come in once in a while, read posts, funny comments, news and vanish . Most times as a guest viewer, I included "Nairaland" as a keyword when searching for a piece of information on Google, so that I can get it answered the "Nigerian" way.
With time, my penchant for the forun escalated and I made up my mind to join too because i found it so fascinating and a place where I can get answers to most problems I encounter on a daily; and the joy of having people with like minds that can relate with such problems or challenges.
Presently, I can't help but assert that I'm a "proud" Nairaland Addict, lol. Its my most visited website and im almost invariably online (Mind you, I ain't Jobless). Today ,I bring you ways in which Nairaland has affected/transformed my life.

1) MY DICTION HAS IMPROVED

Yes, Nairaland is saturated with individuals who have almost impeccable diction and a good mastery of the English Language, it is evident in their comments.
How about the numerous novels uploaded by our writers? All these have helped tremendously to shape my diction and sense of expression. I happen to be an admin in a whatsapp group for the alumni of my secondary school. The way I relate and express myself in the group with admirable vocabulary made an old classmate send me a private Message. "Guy, tell me the secret na, your vocabs don develop o, I dey admire am", It read. I just shook my head and smiled. I later gave him some tips , but deep down In my mind, I knew that Nairaland played the major role.

2) I AM MORE INFORMED NOW

Before I joined this forum, I used to be oblivious to information, political news, entertainment news, societal news, sports news etc.
But right now, an incredible transformation has taken place. I went from being the quite boy that hardly chips in a contribution during discussions with folks to being the alpha source of information, I keep others informed. You just can't hear that news before me.
When my friends tell me that "Mikel obi's is now a father of a set of twins" I smile, shrug and say "that's an outdated news man, about two days ago it happened" I now seat boldly with my dad to discuss politics because im now Informed and NAIRALAND keeps me informed. Its excting

3) MAKING NEW AND EXCITING FRIENDS.

There's not doubt that this forum brings people together from different walks of life across the country and beyond.
I have been able to make new friends here, it all started when they made some useful contributions to my thread and we got to exchange numbers. Very intelligent and exciting people : Chizzy94, Chizzy, nabsprada, Champella,Bukjosy, Obeenah etc.

4) SOURCE OF ENCOURAGEMENT

This forum has been a source of encouragement to me, in many ramifications of life.
There' was a time a had a little academic challenge, and being such an introvert that barely relates with classmates talk more of the HOD, I ran to Nairaland and posted my worries. And before I could spell out my surname in full "ONUOHA", the comments came flooding in. Encouragements from well wishers and those that had akin issues. And today, I have overcome that challenge. Nairaland is home.

5) IMPROVED SENSE OF HUMOUR

Hahahaha, need I explain this? Everyone here knows we got the funniest people in this country on Nairaland.
Whenever I have a gloomy or sad day, I quickly enter Nairaland, just to read the hilarious and refreshing comments of nairalanders. "The Wailers", "Abeg, who get beans, I get oil?", "....and how does that reduce the exchange rate of dollar?" "IPOB youths" "The yoruba-igbo e-clashes" lol its all exciting..
I have been transformed to a light comedian too amidst my guys, I keep them laughing all day, its all Nairaland.

6) My FATHER IS A NAIRALANDER.

Yes, you read it right, my father is a regular guest on NL. It all happened when My kid brother eventually unearthed the reason why i have my attenntion buried in my phone most of the time, Nairaland. He started visiting the forum too. One day he met our dad. "Daddy, I can see you like reading newspapers all the time, why not check out this sight that displays news and stop wasting money on newspapers"
My dad welcomed the idea and today, pitifully, Daddy is an addict. Hope he doesn't get to read this.

7) DEFINED CAREER PATH:

I had little or no idea about what I'd like to be in life, hitherto. Its not because I'm a dummy or I lack a sense of decision, but I didn't get to gather experience about career paths while coming up, all thanks to my local background.
As I joined Nairaland, my sense of career was rebranded, I got enlightened by the numerous and ever inspiring career aficionados we have here. This helped me choose a suitable career for my self, applied for the course in the university, and BINGO! I was admitted, at an attempt as though I was predestined for this.
I am training to be a chemical Engineer and I'm proud I chose it.
Worthy mentions: Jarus, Champella.

cool TALENT DICOVERY:

I'm a lover of music, particularly Hiphop and inspirational songs.
I once stumbled upon a thread for rap battles, and it was interesting reading through the captivating verses and punchlines and I thought to my self: "Are these demigods or something, ain't they ur fellow Nairalanders?, try write your verses too" From there, I got a song book and started writing songs, and I must confess the 'flows' kept coming. Today I have recorded three songs and I consider songwriting as one of my talents. Thanks to Music section, Nairaland.

9) SOLUTION CENTER:

To me, NL is beyond a forum right now, its more of a "solution center" to me. There hasn't been an issue I brought here that went without a solution.
So, as I go about my daily stuffs, its imprinted in my subconsciousness that I have a solution center, I take it to God sha, if its beyond NL.

There are many other little ways in which NL has transformed or affected my life but these are the few I can remember presently...

I wanna hear yours too, how has NL transformed/changed/affected your life, whether positively or negatively, any regrets??

Capablen writes, from FUTMx.

In countless ways. God bless nairaland and Segun Oswewa
