dayokanu: When Tevez was picked in 2010, how did Messi fare?there were 640 outfield players in the world cup. yes messi under performed. his under performance was superb to at least 635 of those players. under performed! lol. i wonder if mikel obi had scored four goals and made 1 assist and nigeria played against germany in that final and got the silver medal 7 mins from time. no be only under perform. the standard used in judging messi is different from the standard used in judging every other player in every corner of the world. |
dayokanu: Maradona has been known to heap massive praises on Messi from time.bro, it seems you misunderstand me. i never said that messi was the best player of the world cup. winning the golden ball does not always mean being the best player. that is life for you. there is always an argument for and against everyone. in 2010 even though forlan won it, it could have been sneijder or iniesta or villa or casillas, or xavi or even muller. ive been saying this- if it was up to me i'd give the golden ball to thomas muller. besides muller i'd give it to messi. who are the other stand out candidates? robben? no way, a lot of dribbling and dives but messi was ahead of him in everything; goals scored, position reached, head to head! next james- excellent but unluckily he didnt go far enough in the tournament. but for anyone to say that messi should not be in contention, why? the same boring reason of not scoring in the knock out stages as if this rule was engraved in a stone? not fair. you're the star player and best player of your country, you play in the final for the first time in 24 years, score 4 goals and win 4 man of the match awards, and someone says you cannot win the golden ball? not fair. |

Here’s why we’re glad he won... 158 Shares Share Tweet +1 Clive RoseNot the trophy Messi wanted to be collecting last night (Photo by Clive Rose/Getty Images) Pre-tournament, many believed it would be Argentina’s defensive frailties that would be their stumbling block in their bid to win the World Cup on Brazilian soil It turned out to be quite the contrary, as Mascherano rolled back the years in his favoured holding midfield role, and even Martin Demichelis looked composed. But you got the distinct impression that Sabella’s only tactical plan was to get solid at the back, and hope that Messi would do something special. And for us, Lionel Messi duly delivered. The Argentine side looked distinctly average in every game they played, and when you look into a little more detail, you notice how much of a positive impact the four time Ballon d’Or winner had at the World Cup: 1. The Messi Factor Lionel Messi dragged his home nation through the group stages by the scruff of the neck; he scored the decisive goal against Bosnia, broke Iranian hearts with a 91st minute winning goal in Belo Horizonte, and then scored a brace against Nigeria in a 3-2 win. Moving into the knockout phase, he produced the only moment of excitement against Switzerland with the assist for Di Maria’s winning goal, and even had a hand in Higuain’s winner against Belgium in the quarters. Messi’s World Cup in numbers 4 Goals 4 Man Of The Match awards 46 Successful dribbles Lionel Messi scored four goals, won four Man of the Match awards, completed 46 successful dribbles, got one assist, and was the best performing player according to WhoScored.com. 2. Adidas The internet conspiracy machine has gone into overdrive churning out another little gem. Apparently, because Adidas sponsor both the Argentine forward and the Golden Ball trophy, this result was a foregone conclusion. But who else could have realistically won the prize? The usual suspects Muller, Robben, Lahm, Rodriguez and Kroos have all been bandied around as potential winners, all of whom are sponsored by Adidas anyway. And, if any of the aforementioned had taken the award ahead of Messi, we’d probably still be discussing it now anyway. Seriously, Robben, who admitted to diving, ahead of Messi? 3. It’s for inspiration, not for goals alone The Golden Ball is given to the best individual player of the World Cup. This is not necessarily down to the amount of goals a player has netted, but how much he inspired his team mates. Messi didn’t just inspire the squad around him, like Maradona in previous tournaments, he inspired the entire Argentine nation. 4. He’s a stunning individual in a team game In a weird way, Messi winning the award is a great compliment to Germany. The Golden Ball celebrates consistent individual inspiration, something Germany didn’t have as such. Joachim Löw’s side are a brilliant team, and you’d struggle to single out one player that deserves praise more than the other. Lahm, Muller, Neuer, Hummels all had a superb tournament, but picking one for this accolade would be a lazy choice. The fact that Germany lost a first team player in Marco Reus just before the tournament, then lost Sami Khedira in the warm up last night, but it had little detrimental effect on their overall performance just shows the unity and squad strength. In contrast, Argentina relied so heavily on Lionel Messi to bail them out, and when he wasn’t quite at his best, very few players stepped up to plate. Think Higuaín missing then target when clear on goal in the final. Without Messi, they would have really struggled just to get out of the group. 5. Five’s the charm It’s not unusual for the Golden Ball to be given to a player that has not won the World Cup; it’s the fifth time in a row now. Uruguay finished fourth in South Africa thanks some shady antics from Luis Suarez, yet Diego Forlan still won the Golden Ball. Zidane won it in 2006 despite sticking the nut on Marco Materazzi in the final. Kahn bagged it the time before that, even though Ronaldo scored 8 goals, yes 8. 6. He handled losing the final with grace He’s just lost the biggest game in football with 8 minutes to go, how would you be feeling? Not much like picking up a trophy from Sepp Blatter and co, we’re sure. But compare it to the snarling way that Argentina reacted to losing the final in 1990. Standing alongside Manuel Neuer with the Golden Glove was one of the most awkward football photoshoot moments in living memory, but Messi handled it with grace. A40: Loool this is Mario Kempes an Argentine World cup hero ooh! Maybe una Argentina pass amyou have to read my post again. i did not say that all the teams that played argentina parked the bus, i only mentioned iran, bosnia, switzerland, and it shows that the defence did not have much to do! for all those who dare to say mascherano was argentina's best player! lol. patronising mascherano just to bring down messi? kai kai. muller scored 1 goal in the knock outs not 2, world cup never tay wey e finish o, haba! na im be say by next month you will increase it to 3, lol. also i said against a 10 man portugal! STRESS- 10 MAN! any 1mbecile can score a hattrick against a 10 man portugal. as for james ive not talked about him alot. he was the star revelation of the tournament but the quarter final is just not good enough too bad for him. no one has ever won a golden ball without passing the quarter final stage! and for the past 20 years or 5 world cups no one ever won the golden ball from the world cup winning team then no one shouted fifa. iam not saying it should be a standard but you guys should stop shouting fifa fifa fifa! as for messi you guys again have decided to set a standard; no one wins the golden ball without scoring a goal in the knock out stages. where did you get that? from the world cup constitution or from the 10 commandments? lol. the golden ball was between muller and messi. i thought muller would win but messi did and iam happy. and then all the 1diots like kempes leave out argentina's super flops like higuain, palacio, aguero,de maria who had to get himself injured and criticize the guy who scored 4 goals and one assist, won 4 man of the match awards, had the highest number of dribbles, created the highest number of goal scoring chances, got the country to the siver medal after flop teams of 98, 2002,2006 and 2010? clap for kempes. |
there win not only be weeping and gnashing of teeth on the last day. there shall also be weeping and gnashing of teeth whenever messi wins an award! he has touched down in argentina with his silver medal and golden ball to a heroic welcome from thousands of people. in the last one month he has widened the gap as the greatest footballer of this generation. if you dont like it, go and die. |
the team landed in buenos aires to a heroic welcome for getting to the final and getting the silver medal since 1990. crowds chanting messi, messi, messi. so good to know that messi doesnt even give a damn about the damn golden ball. wonderful to be one of the 32 teams that can have thousands troop to the airport to embrace you. i wonder how many nigerians, english, italians, spaniards, portugeese, even belgians went to welcome their troops. |
dayokanu: Someone is comparing this sham to Zidane in 2006 and Forlan in 2010you are still obsessed with goals and assists! you are calling goals and assists in the quarters, semis, final. so how many did robben score in the semi final? how many did muller score in the final? we are just here drinking panadol for messi's headache. messi says he doesnt need your golden ball. his world cup silver medal is more important to him. |
A40: Without Kolasinac's own goal Argentina's game would have also ended in a draw. If the defence didn't do their job Messi's goal would also not have given Argentina 3 pts. Try dey give other people credit as well! Everything isn't always about MessiHOW COULD YOU SAY THIS? LOL. NA SO YOU DE COUNT YA OWN. WAS THE OG NOT THE FIRST GOAL SCORED? WHO SCORED NEXT? WAS IT NOT MESSI? THE OG DID NOT MAKE IT 2-1, IT MADE IT 2-0. SO YOU'RE SO WRONG THERE! AS FOR HIGUAIN'S DEFLECTED GOAL, THE EMPHASIS HERE IS ON MESSI'S CONTRIBUTION. U GUYS SAID HE DIDNT DO ANYTHING IN THE KNOCK OUT, GO AND WATCH THE MATCH AGAIN AND SEE HIS SKILL LEADING TO THAT LONE GOAL VERSUS BELGIUM-THAT IS WHAT THEY CALL AN INDIRECT ASSIST! SO GOLDEN BALL IS FOR ONLY KNOCK OUT STAGES AND YOU'RE HAPPY WITH JAMES FOR HIS GOLDEN BOOT AFTER 4 FIRST ROUND GOALS OR YOU WANT ROBBEN AS MVP WITH ALL HIS GOALS IN THE FRIST ROUND OR YOU WANT MULLER AS MVP WITH 3 GOALS AGAINST 10 MAN SPAIN IN THE SAME FIRST ROUND WHICH YOU SO DESPISE? LOL. IN MOST PART OF THE WORLD CUP ARGENTINA'S DEFENCE HAD LITTLE OR NO WORK TO DO. IRAN, BOSNIA, SWISS ALL PARKED BUSES AND REFUSED TO ATTACK! SO MESSI IT WAS WHO SAVED THE DAY. WHETHER MESSI FAILED OR NOT IS NOT REALLY IMPORTANT ANYMORE! HE MUST NOT WIN THE WORLD CUP, HE MUST NOT BE THOUGHT TO BE BETTER THAN MARADONA OR PELE. HE IS ONE OF THE GREATEST IN HISTORY ALREADY. FOOTBALL AWARDS CONTROVERSIES WONT START AND END WITH MESSI, WORLD CUP GOLDEN BALL 2006 AND 2010, AND FIFA BALLON DOR'S THERE WERE CONTROVERSIES. EVEN IN THE TIMES OF ZIDANE VERSUS FIGO, HENRY VERSUS RONALDINHO. 1 MONTH AGO HE HAD NO SENIOR TEAM MEDAL OR TROPHY. TODAY HE IS A WORLD CUP SILVER MEDALIST AND A WORLD CUP GOLDEN BALL WINNER. |
thegoodjoehunt: Xavi was the pillar of the team but Messi operated at a level, no one in football operated on.masherano did not carry any team, messi did. against a lowly team like iran, was the iran attack supposed to trouble the argentine defence in anyway? never! the argentine attack only failed to score and messi rescued them! against bosnia player for player was the bosnian attack supposed to trouble a team like argentina's defence? hello no! only the attack failed to score and messi rescued them! against nigeria we all saw what happened against a nigerian team that refused to park the bus, the argentine defence started leaking goals, it took messi to score and rescue them. bosnia and iran parked the bus so they hardly troubled the argentine defence. switzerland parked the airplane so they never troubled the argentine defense. at the other end only a messi magic could unlock the swiss defence! and then what do i get? someone coming to tell me that mashcerano carried the team. travesty! thegoodjoehunt: I would not start arguing that because no doubt, Cuadrado made the Columbian team thick and created a platform for James Rodriguez to shine.look at messi's strike against iran. i will not tolerate your hypocrisy. if masherano carried argentina, then cuardrado carried colombia and sneijder carried holland and schwein carried germany. period! |
dayokanu: Won't it be easier to just tell how many goals or assist he had at the business end of the tournament.seriously i dont know about you but as for me, i sit before my tv set to watch a match. for people like you a striker/attacker/midfielder only plays a good game if he gets a goal or an assist. that is never my mentality. that's why we would always defer. if you're a fan you might see things differently. take your time, be patient, sit for 90 minutes, shake off that mentality and you will testify that the A-Z of a football match is not a goal or an assist. a very typical example- in the match argentina versus holland, messi beats kyut and vlar on the right wing and pulled a cross in to maxi in what should be the assist of the tournament. it was a chance closer and easier than the one gotze scored. but maxi flopped as usual. such instances occured again and again and made sure messi created the highest number of chances in the tournament sadly not every chance created counts as an assist because there will always be 1mpotent strikers whose duty is to waste assists. go back and watch the final again and come back and tell me sincerely messi didnt play well. he might have created a standard tooo high for the world to appreciate but we should never make him a victim of such standards. talk football like a fan, leave all that 'how many goals did he score' 'how many assists did he give'. whether we like you like it or not he is the captain, he is the front runner and he is the star, it will always be in the books that messi inspired argentina to the 2014 world cup final. that is how it will always be reported. |
THIS IS WHAT MESSI SAID- AND YOU'RE SO QUICK AND SO HAPPY TO START CRITICIZING. YOU THINK HE IS RONALDO? NEVER. Dhelake: Messi blaming others for the loss, They all had one chance each, he should have converted his nah, he had more of the ball compared to them so no excuse‘We forwards failed to take our chances’ In analysing the defeat, Messi had this to say: “Although they had more of the ball, we had the clearer chances, but those of us up front failed to convert them. We had three opportunities – one fell to me, one to Pipa [Gonzalo Higuain] and one to Rodrigo [Palacio]. In failing to get on the score sheet last night, the Argentina captain concluded the knockout phase without adding to the four goals he plundered during his side’s three group fixtures. That said, it would be neither opportune nor fair to focus on Messi’s goal drought. After all, it was his assist that set up Angel Di Maria’s winner against Switzerland in the Round of 16, while against Belgium in the next round, his ball retention was key to wearing down his opponents – as signalled by his own coach, Alejandro Sabella. In the semi-final against the Netherlands, he then confidently tucked away his penalty during the shoot-out, no mean feat considering the huge pressure he was under. The Final also had its share of Messi moments, with his pace and skill complicating matters for the German defence. This was especially evident in the first half, most notably when he twice left Jerome Boateng for dead with a stop-start run down the right channel that ended with a dangerous cut-back from the by-line. Shortly after the break, he continued in that vein, embarking on one of his trademark right-to-left slalom runs, only to send the ensuing shot wide. Despite his obvious fatigue, he never once looked like giving up. Messi concluded by lamenting: “After failing to get past the quarter-finals for so long, we managed to get to the final, which is still something. Even so, we’re leaving here disappointed not to win the trophy given the way the final played out. That leaves us feeling very annoyed and angry, but we now need to look to the future.” |
thegoodjoehunt: Yes, being a ball winner and a pass master makes the team thick. Why do you think Barcelona decline is going the same route as Xavi.speaking of xavi, so because he is the pass master he is better than messi? the same messi who is the greatest player anywhere in the world since 2009? now i know we would never communicate, we would never agree! |
thegoodjoehunt: When someone starts abusing, you know he needs abuses to give his points value.iam not abusing. if you see it as an abuse then sorry. but i did not find it abusive when you used the word. anyway sorry, but carry on, keep it coming. |
thegoodjoehunt: That is your thought but it was not true. One of Mascherano's best games was the game against Belgium. He had amazing tackles and raked up over 98% pass completion. He was the pass master of that match. thegoodjoehunt: Okay, I missed your context. You said Uruguay were not a real test for James Rodriguez. I get your point now. Sorry, you were coherent. Back to the topic. Uruguay made it into the second round ahead of Italy and England.if you want to start dogging messi based on the tackles mascherano won, then i will have it no other way cuardrado was the real star of colombia not james, sneijder was the real star of holland not robben, schweinsteiger was the real star of germany not muller, luiz was the real star of brazil not neymar. |
thegoodjoehunt: In the comment you said I made, what was the quoted statement in the comment?guy my speech might be incoherent, but your brain is getting incoherent, do something about it. are you trying to wriggle out of this one? |
thegoodjoehunt: Lionel Messi is undoubtedly La Albiceleste’s star man. On the basis of player names printed on the back of replica shirts, you’d be forgiven for thinking the number 10 is Argentina’s only player. But it is Mascherano, not Messi that reflects the true identity of this sideit's a very big shame that all these so called pundits only started to talk about mascherano only after he made that tackle on robben, and it's an opportunity for every dvmb fvck to get a piece of messi. read for your self, the unknown author whom no one has ever heard about started off by talking about the robben tackle. game 1,2,3,4,5.................ending stages of game number 6. and now mascherano is a perfect alibi to criticise messi's golden ball award. this is no different to saying that vlarr or sneijder was the real star of holland, or cuadrado was the real star of colombia or kroos was the real star of germany. how do you like that? guy debate with me, stop bringing these nonsense articles from these european svckers. |
thegoodjoehunt: How is this a statement about James Rodriguez?ddippset: if james rodriguez was lionel messi, he would have 3 players on him every match. in his first real test against brazil, lol, he choked. if james was messi in a colombia jersey, colombia would have the bus parked on them 2-4-7. Lol So Uruguay was not a real test? In the Match against Brazil, the whole stadium gave him a standing ovation. Every Brazilian player congratulated him. And guess what, he scored. So how did he choke again? SEE THE STATEMENT I MADE, AND SEE YOUR RESPONSE! I SPOKE ABOUT JAMES, YOU STARTED TALKING ABOUT STANDING OVATION. YOU MUST BE SLEEPY. |
thegoodjoehunt: What are you talking again now? I thought I showed you that Mascherano was the pass master of the World Cup. O gini.so because some one is the 'pass master', he automatically becomes the best player? we are talking about the best player and you are telling me about pass master! do they sound as synonyms to you? messi's stats are there before your very eyes and you are still arguing? |
thegoodjoehunt: Incoherency again. We were talking of Forlan's impact at the 2010 World Cup and you are talking of 2014 World Cup. Haba, Corona is no more the player today as he was at 2010. Remember at 2010, he was part of the Europa league winning team, scoring two goals in the finals.i made a comment about james rodriguez and you responded with the above quote, and you speak of incoherency? if mine is incoherency yours has to be hypocrisy! |
thegoodjoehunt: Incoherency again. We were talking of Forlan's impact at the 2010 World Cup and you are talking of 2014 World Cup. Haba, Corona is no more the player today as he was at 2010. Remember at 2010, he was part of the Europa league winning team, scoring two goals in the finals. In the Chelsea boss' opinion, 'La Pulga's' work on the pitch was fundamental because he was doing a job he wasn't used to doing at Barcelona. "He sacrificed himself for the good of the team. He was more focused on winning the tournament than being its best player. I saw him playing in areas of the pitch where he doesn't usually play. He dropped deep and picked up the ball a long way from the opposition's goal", he said on his Yahoo programme. "Messi has my utmost respect for what he did at the World Cup", the Portuguese added. "Playing football for your country is different to playing for your club. If he'd wanted to show just how good he is he'd have played tucked in behind Higuaín, waiting for that moment to change the game", he said. thegoodjoehunt: [b]Both sides missed a string of decent chances but both were inspired by the men who do what Messi can't do.you're posting an article from one oliver holt. who the heck is he anyway? some white punk somewhere! guy pls just stop already. stop pushing this, you are embarssing yourself. masch was good but to say he was better than messi? pls stop already, i was even taking it to be a joke. do you waqnt me to start counting the number of passes messi made that his team wasted or the number of chances created or the number of dribbles or the number of impact goals scored. so you go with oliver holt hun? lol. i wish you luck in your future endeavours. |
thegoodjoehunt: Lol So Uruguay was not a real test? In the Match against Brazil, the whole stadium gave him a standing ovation. Every Brazilian player congratulated him.without suarez uruguay was a crap team, same uruguay that lost 3-1 to costa rica? scored a penalty? my guy he choked! |
bykebyke: Am watching a replay of the game now....and ...how dare you people say messi did not play anything...in order to play well messi must score a hattrick and dribble 5 defenders. anything less, he is a flop. |
Dhelake: Messi blaming others for the loss, They all had one chance each, he should have converted his nah, he had more of the ball compared to them so no excusewhy are you so vulnerable to articles without reading between the lines? he said we, he blamed himself as well. besides that his own was a 50/50 chance. it's the kind of chance you're running towards goal with defenders bearing down on you, and it's either you score or you miss. besides every striker has to miss some and score some, you cant score all. for higuain it was different. a kroos back pass fell nicely for him 12 yards out; he didnt have to run, he didnt have to panic. he misses; higuain misses 8 out of 10 chances. for palacio, he is crap; same chance fell to him against holland, he nodded to the keeper. same against germany, he didnt have to run,he didnt have to rush, yet he blew it. higuain and palacio owe the argentine people an apology. |
thegoodjoehunt: If anybody is nailing his coffin, it is you. You now agree Messi was surrounded by great players. Even if they did not score much goals, they put in their work. The Argentine play is centered around Messi. They play for him to shine. Yet he was behind James Rodriguez and Muller.they play for him to shine! who exactly played for messi to shine? say mascherano, the same mascherano whom the world only noticed because of the robben tackle? damn damn damn. |
thegoodjoehunt: If anybody is nailing his coffin, it is you. You now agree Messi was surrounded by great players. Even if they did not score much goals, they put in their work. The Argentine play is centered around Messi. They play for him to shine. Yet he was behind James Rodriguez and Muller.if james rodriguez was lionel messi, he would have 3 players on him every match. in his first real test against brazil, lol, he choked. if james was messi in a colombia jersey, colombia would have the bus parked on them 2-4-7. |
thegoodjoehunt: Incoherency again. Why not use facts to back your points.you cannot force anybody to accept facts can you? let me repeat the facts just in you pretended not to see ddippset: no player can win the world cup all alone. but in this tournament, messi show how a single player can drag his team almost singlehandedly. you were one of those saying at the beginning of the world cup that this argentine team are not good, belgium will knock them out, holland will knock the out and so on. then they reached the final and all of a sudden you guys remember mascherano made 1 million tackles. against iran with 10 men behind the ball and 1 min to go messi struck! against bosnia with 25 mins to go and 1 men behind the ball, messi struck! against switzerland with seconds to go and 9 men behind the ball, messi struck, against belgium with all their stars messi drew 3 defenders and laid a through pass to de maria for the only goal, against holland with all of the holland stars running from the first penalty messi stepped forward and led his team by example. even with mascherano's 1 million tackles and passes, argentina would never have crossed the quarter final. |
