Oh, I actually forgot to comment on your post title: Things ARE worse than they appear to be. The single stone of Emefiele's ban on 41 items has caused a ripple effect. The effects are what he's been trying to counter and cover up with all the further restrictions he's placed no dollar access. |
zinosleek:You asked astute questions. Here are a few facts: Buhari was elected to fight corruption and improve the plight of the poor. The parallel (emphasis on 'BLACK') market is illegal- a criminal act, according to the law. Therefore since May 29, there should have been multiple arrests of all those trading in foreign currency outside official channels. The arrests will never happen because the black market is run by a northern cabal. Thanks to BVN, there is now a means to monitor every dollar that's issued by the CBN: Even if you enter the country with dollars, at the very least a scan of your passport can be made to ID any sellers of foreign currency that didn't originate from the CBN. This monitoring by the regulator will not happen because of said cabal; in fact, I've read newspaper articles that have asked these same questions. Also a particular columnist has been begging the CBN to issue dollar certificates- which are not transferable- to all importers thereby ensuring that round-tripping is curtailed, even if not eliminated. ------------------------------ Regarding it's regulatory role, the CBN under Emifiele could have simply raised taxes on those 41 items, instead of driving an artificial scarcity. OR: If a ban was the way it insisted on going, a deadline for the ban on dollar access for those items would have both ended their importation and given importers time to sell off their goods and transfer their funds to other import areas- without passing on the effects of higher fund costs to their Nigerian customers- thereby weakening the naira's value. The joke is that the importers actually GOT the funds from unofficial channels, thereby denying the economy the benefits of the dollar purchase tariffs they would have paid! Some even went to neighbouring countries to send dollars when they were banned from paying into their accounts!! This means that the entire payment for their imports completely by-passed our economy and benefited our neighbours!!! This all means that the CBN has been trying to manage the damage that IT ACTUALLY CAUSED! Factor in the utter lack of any economic policy in GMB's first 6 months and you have the inability of the economy- had it been under proper management- to cushion the effects of the ban. So there's little value in talking about how wonderful a job the CBN is doing when it's the source of the problem. By the way, restricting access to any currency simply makes it more expensive. This is simple, common sense. So restrictions on dollar access have actually worsened the situation, making the naira weaker against ALL CURRENCIES. As an aside, the 'sensationalism' arises because now, the black market is about the ONLY source of 'short term' access- the various official methods favour large, industrial players and institutional buyers of dollars, not the SMEs who need it for their day-to-day; the irony being that the same CBN will claim that these SMEs are the drivers of the economy. Meanwhile, two questions: Why has the FEC not given a deadline for all financial industry players to put a stop to the black market, as the much touted 'best practice' in developed nations? What happened to the news report we all got that banks have over $5billion in their vaults? God help us all. |

New line, same qualityy. Still available. They would make a lovely gift- For yourself or a loved one! |
To paraphrase Mr. T, 'I pity the fools', when I hear people who continue to put their hope in one man. In the history of humanity, there has never been a man (or woman)- be they king, emperor, tyrant or 'leader'- who was able to develop a nation without the active, persevering participation of the people. Yet Nigerians bought the boasts of the one man with his 'new sheriff in town' appellation. I would've seen a TINY glimmer of light at the end of this terrible, obsidian tunnel we're all in, if there had been a forum/thread/medium for APC members- on Nairaland for example, discussing, arguing, proposing and resolving on ways to tackle issues. It's almost mid-december and yet the clanging bells of accusations are compounded by the dearth of ideas and collective resolve from the ruling party. ----------------------- Having shifted the goal post on Boko Haram twice, the army's now been given an indefinite, open-ended timeline. Despite giving a deadline specifically for the kidnapped students of FGGC Chibok, the excuse (reason?) is now that they're mostly 'happily' married. Rice importation has been banned, unbanned and banned again. I read from Osinbajo that the budget was to be N8 trillion, but the FEC seems to have decided on 6. Or was the N2.1trillion Buhari requested for 2015 the 'advance fee', hence the reduction? (Has the NASS approved the appropriation?) Let's leave army check-points out of it. At least, the inconsistency of this government is consistent. Let's be clear: Whether you're a wailing wailer or a lying liar, most of us are going to suffer next year. Again, taxes will go up; subsidy will go out; contracts will be sparce; jobs will be scarce and employers will be kings; the naira will crash and crude will still fall. Those who know what's good for them and their loved ones will skip any attempt at Christmas celebrations that extend beyond going to Church and singing carols. If you're lucky enough to get your full pay by year's end- to say nothing of those who might get bonuses, stick it in the bank or stock up on food towards next year. If you're unemployed, I can only pray that God sees you through 2016. When January 1st arrives and you hear the budget, look beyond the chest-beating and prepare for a month's end filled with sticks, stones and bare bones... Those who have ears, let them hear. God help us all. |

Who remembers the head of state who rewarded victorious eagles with a handshake? Very few people remember the massive brain drain that saw vast numbers of Nigeria's professional elite flee from this country like refugees fleeing a war-torn nation. These boys will all end up in big clubs abroad and we'll keep providing the raw materials for other nations to refine and sell back to us via ESPN, SKY, SUPER SPORT, etc. Just as they sell our cocoa back to us as bournvita, milo and chocolates. Or our crude as petrol, diesel and kerosene. A nation, a people that despises it's prophets. At the very least, you'd expect them all to get academic scholarships in our best universities and guaranteed civil service jobs in any ministry of their choice. |

damton:I'm alarmed at this crassness. In a nation where police brutality, mob justice, accidental discharge and soldier floggings- special thanks to GMB and WAI- are still rife and even seem to be part of our culture, you excuse is about fighting insurgency and morale? Do you know how many innocents the Nigerian Army has killed and arrested as 'combatants'? Even with the FOI bill, we can't get a straight answer from the military about the same troops whose actions you're supposed to be defending- with no idea of what really happened to 105 of them. And yet you think that this isn't affecting troop morale, but issues like misinformation are less damaging than a UN resolution that seeks to protect YOU from abuse?! God in heaven, what's wrong with you people?!? |
PassingShot:Guy... Of all the things that ran through my mind as responses to your limp reasoning, I'll say only this: Truth respects no man; and God is truth. Therefore, as a counter, tell us all how he should have addressed the issues he raised- maybe you should constructively criticize him by showing us how it's done? Especially since you don't seem to realise that GMB is your employee and servant... |
winter is coming... |
Me, I supoz dey bed dey change to gia 5 by now. But dat argument on top financial times mata no gree me sleep. In recent months there have been several urgent issues that required immediate attention, but rather than hold our employees in the three arms of government responsible, I keep seeing 'soon'. Soon, it will be... Soon, there will be... Soon, we will be... Abeg, I just need PassingShot to let us know- as the Lai Mohammed of Nairaland- when the official 'soon' by government will be- When will the scarcity end? When will power improve? When will Boko Haram end? When will Chibok girls return? When will we see the 'un-missing' 105 soldiers in training or on parade in their barracks. or camp ground. or wherever they're supposed to be? I ask these questions so that Nigerians- both the Wailing Wailers and the Lying Liars can let pepper rest, till the officially appointed time- 'Cos we still haven't gotten the CCB's official asset declarations by GMB and VPYO. Also, if we'd known that only half of the ministerial list would have been published after the deadline of the Senate's sitting of September 30, maybe we'd have threatened 'baba' to shake bodi sooner. (How is it that the owner of 'body language' is always late in submitting his own work?) So enough of the rigmarole. Quite enough. It's high time we put a definite full stop to all these shenanigans. When you make an official statement, give us a turn-key date that we, like all expectant and demanding employers, can hold you to. As they say in the US of A, 'put up or shut up'. I dey wait you. Thanks. |
