I do not know if there has been cessation of hatred between the ethnic groups but there is lingering enmity between them since 1967. It was not long ago the two groups squared to annihilate each another on the battle field. As far as I am concerned, the battle field scenario has not changed.

Major Adekunle, 28-years old, General of the Nigerian troops on the South front sat enthroned behind the General’s desk of the Shell administration, which he had made into his main station when he took the Ibo-city by storm on May 18. Now he stated: "I am convinced you will report objectively and keep to our orders." We confirmed that.

"Okay," he beamed, "the Germans just know how war works. Tonight there is a front-party in my headquarters. You will come! An order is an order!"

This interview with the most important man in the Nigerian war took place at night. Whisky and beer were abundant, uniformed go-go girls played DJ, Adekunle danced and petted his mascot, a small mountain goat named "Ojukwu".

STERN: Your friends in the federal government of Lagos call you the "bloodhound of Nigeria". You are chasing a whole people. You kill everything.

ADEKUNLE: Europeans are awful. They always generalize. My troops have kept prisoners. You have had a chance to convince yourself of this.

STERN: I only saw one prisoner, a fifteen-year old boy.

ADEKUNLE: There you are! In addition I want to emphasize that we do not murder all people who no longer want to remain members of the Nigeria Federation.

STERN: Does that mean that you do not want the extinction of the Ibos?

ADEKUNLE: The nation which the Ibos founded under the name of Biafra on May 30, 1967 is not a pure Ibo-federation. You Europeans should really know that by now. Seven million Ibos and five million other population groups are living now in the 80% overpopulated Biafra: Ibibios, Ijaws, Kalabaris, Ekios, Efiks, and Annangs. These minority populations in the Ibo nation have always hated the Ibos. Therefore they jubilantly welcome the liberation of their areas through federal troops.

STERN: What are your troops doing when they march into a town around Port Harcourt, an area where most of the farmers are not Ibos?

ADEKUNLE: We aim at everything that moves.

STERN: Small children tend not to stay put for very long.

ADEKUNLE: I know. I have two myself.

STERN: What will your troops do when you get to the Ibo heartland, that is, to the place populated by Ibos only?

ADEKUNLE: There we will aim at everything even if it is not moving.

STERN: Are you racist?

ADEKUNLE: You should know exactly where racists are. There is no such thing as racism in Nigeria.

STERN: But why are you refusing to discuss this war with a European?

ADEKUNLE: Let me tell you something: When the Russians surrounded Stalingrad did you request a land corridor from them so as to better feed your soldiers who were stuck in the pot there? Of course you didn’t and I can tell from your face that you think the thought of a land corridor to bring in food for the captured German soldiers in Stalingrad is a bad joke. Me too. Where and when, …………., was there a war in which the loser was re-nourished one more time before the final loss? Why are you just calling for a land corridor for Biafra? Why aren’t you calling for a land corridor for the Viet Kong? I have to declare: You Europeans are simply not competent!
STERN: What is happening to the European Humanitarian Assistance programs which were authorized through your government?

ADEKUNLE: In the section of the front that I rule—and that is the whole south front from Lagos to the border of Kamerun—I do not want to see the Red Cross, Caritas Aid, World Church delegation, Pope, Missionary, or UN delegation.

STERN: Does that mean that the many thousands of tons of food that are stored in Lagos will never get to the refugee camps in your section of the country?

ADEKUNLE: You are a sharp one, my friend. That’s exactly what I am saying.

STERN: But you said yourself that most of the refugees in the part you captured are not Ibos.

ADEKUNLE: But there could be Ibos among them. I want to avoid feeding a single Ibo as long as this whole people have not given up yet.

STERN: Do you sometimes feel sympathy for the Ibos?

ADEKUNLE: I have learned a word from the British, which is "sorry"! That’s how I want to respond to your question. I did not want this war but I want to win this war. Therefore I have to kill the Ibos. Sorry!
The End.

Adekunle is a British-Russian
I hope you are being regarded as child to certain parents. You write so foolishly that your posts induce me to laugh off my chair. Addekunle as a Major in Nigeria army and definitely not 28 years old, he was not considered feat to command army company. When the war broke out and Nigeria was really short on capable military officers as leaders, Gowon has no choice but to use anybody in uniform.  It is shame you continue to post fallacies and chronically jaundiced stories on this forum.

The loudmouth, Adekunle, did not make a Brigadier until he was posted to Lagos as traffic warden in Apapa Wharf. Where did the reference of "General" in your post originate? I guess obnoxious exaggeration is an inherent trait that runs deep in the blood vein of your peeps.

Given the current notoriety of Boko Haram in commission of mayhem and murderous crimes, it is absolutely normal and safe to hold Boko Haram as the prime suspect in murder of 13 Igbo businessmen in Mubi, Adamawa State. Boko Haram falls into the prime suspect subject or object in a procedural investigation of such crime.

Kobojunkie:
I don't think there is a question of whether what took place is a crime or not, or of what country this happened in. The point here is who is to blame, and why are people quick to blame Boko Haram when it does not even resemble Boko Haram. And I don't think the ethnicity of the victims are that important here especially when you consider these people did not just come from nowhere to where they were found . . , they were not out-of-towners.

Let me re-iterate. Boko Haram's MO has not been that of targetting particular ethnic groups. No, Boko haram has been an equal-opportunity killer gang --- the group kills Hausas, ibos, yorubas, muslims and non . . . they don't seem to discriminate --- look at what happened in Kano. Majority of those killed where muslims and hausa. Also, the group readily admits involvement where it can. So why would it then decide to bounce to attack only people of one ethnicity in another state, when it has not done that before now.

Now, before Boko Haram came onto the Nigerian scene, crimes such as these where already common place however. Why are you suggesting then that this has to be Boko Haram knowing that this does not in anyway resemble the work of the group, and the group does not even claim it, nor does there seem to be a link to them yet?

And out of curiosity, why is it IMPOSSIBLE to believe that this was some sort of business-deal gone-wrong situation? This is not the first time it has happened in Nigeria, and will certainly not be the last so why is it impossible that this could be the case here?
You have written like a bona fide member of Boko Haram. You can never disappoint as a spokesperson of the religious sect. I guess you and governor knew few hidden facts about the crime in Mubi, Adamawa State. You were so myopic to discern the title of the thread is despicable.

Governor seemed to have spoken with level of audacity and exonerated Boko Haram when he said “13 Igbo businessmen gunned down by unidentified killers recently in the commercial town of Mubi, in the state were killed as a result of business conflict.
This is contrary to media reports that they were killed by the deadly Islamic sect, Boko Haram”.

There is no doubt the governor knows the perpetrators of the crime and we wait patiently for the governor to name names.

In addition, governor never said or insinuated in the press release it was the kinsmen of the murdered 13 Igbo businessmen precipitated the heinous crime as the idi.ot  in mushin, the poster, would want us to believe with the mischievous title of the thread.

You say Boko Haram does not represent Northerners. How do you separate one from the other? A history of violence in your region that started since records began in 1945. And then again in 1953 and late 50s into the 60s with pogroms against innocent people and an unnecessary genocide, and then the 70s with the Maitatsine, Yan Tatsine etc well into the 80's. Not to talk of the 90s, through the 2000's.

In all these, millions of people massacred unjustly.

A region that has held power for 39 out of 50 years but still cannot collectively boast of the number of high school finishers, jamb applicants or university graduates than those of a single state in the South East - a place your people, through military fiat and belligerence, once destroyed and rendered infrastructurally and economically useless. Even economically, your people continually express shocking levels of lack.

A region which is indeed a major factory of illiterate and violent people who have consistently held back the progress of a country but yet, fantasizes on a born-to-rule mentality - the same mentality that has made a complete mess of a once promising country.

Do you see why its impossible to separate a pig from the dirt. They aren't mutually exclusive to each other.

Instead of being twisted out of human form about who rejoiced due to heinous crime perpetrated by sect of Islamic idiots, you should be heavily worried why a group of sane persons should embark on an insidious endeavor to kill people who do or do not share the same belief in faith with them.

Boko Haram, religious or non-religious groups does not have moral or constitutional pedigree to harm or torture or kill people who do or do not share in their religious or political doctrines.

I shall show no sympathy to dead or wounded if such deluded groups such as Boko Haram should limit their murderous endeavor among those who share the same doctrines.

how did Nigeria win Biafra, i heard it was "because there was shortage of food in the east", am i right?

the igbo land consists of Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, Imo, and parts of Delta and Rivers State. Small parts of Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Benue and Bayelsa State,
as I said, only Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, Imo, would be forced to join the biafra nation and what do they have to offer, for your info, what these states have in common is lead/zinc,, i still repeat they can always count on their land,
Bros, I initially wrote you were wrongly schooled on the facts. Hunger does not cause people to lose a war. Rather I would say lack of ammunition and moral support do. Even the numerical advantage Nigeria enjoyed over Biafra did not faze the later a bit. I guess you did not see pictures coming out of Ethiopia and Eritrea during the civil war.

I still do not understand the plank of your argument because you seem to hedge your facts on innuendos and fabricated fallacies. Since after the civil war, states with Igbo connection seem to occupy the high echelon of JAMB statistics.

There were two industries/mills responsible for production of steel and aluminum in Nigeria before the war started. Each was located in the north and east respectively.

I do not understand what you meant by “the east has nothing tangible in terms of mineral resources”. When you wrote east, do mean eastern region including the Igbo speakers in today’s Delta State as factored into splitting Nigeria?

As of January 1, 1965, eastern region made entire western region looked backward in terms of human resources and I can assure you that such level of things has not changed.

I shall not get into the mineral resources thing because some people are better in life when left uneducated. In 1965, British government declared eastern region of Nigeria the richest real estate in commonwealth.

What makes you think a northern Nigeria would not have the support of most of those countries you quoted above? Are you telling me biafra's diplomacy has improved from pre 1970 levels where they got support from only 4 nations? Add to that Iran which also has subtle support from Russia.

Please give evidence to show that the north fears the Igbos, to me the only other tribe or ethnic group that the Hausa fulani respects is the Yorubas since they had been defeated by them before, and the Yorubas knows high wire diplomacy.

As I said the best way to defeat Boko Haram is for the SW and SS and Moderate Northern Muslims to pull resources together and eliminate their threat using Nigerias resources.
I do not know when and where Yoruba defeated Sokoto Caliphate or combination of Hausa and Fulani armies. But I do remember Sokoto Caliphate had free reign on women in Ogbomosho and Osogbo. Sokoto Caliphate’s attempt to set feet in Igbo land met a thorough defeat.

Of course, Hausa or Fulani do not worry about Yoruba because the Yoruba will always run second fiddle to Hausa or Fulani. Today, every reasonable politician from northern region, mainly Hausa, Fulani or Kanuri ancestry shall not fail to thank the Yoruba and other ethnicities in southern Nigeria baring Biafrans for helping them in defeat of Biafra when the oportunity presnts itself.

Let me state unequivocally that no single ethnic group in Nigeria will survive a week of war with Ndigbo.

The outcome of Nigeria/Baifra war of 1967 did not predicate on diplomacy. However, I would say the clash of personalities and assumed fallacies surrounding the crude oil in eastern region dictated the tune of support. I guess certain folks in Nigeria must have realized the crude oil is more of a curse to Nigeria than a blessing.

I do not bloody care about the devastating consequence the disintegration of cesspit called Nigeria will bring. All I want is split the accident called Nigeria.

One of the cardinal reasons Harold Wilson, then British Prime Minister, decreed Biafra must be defeated was to suck Nigeria dry of its crude oil revenue.

Britain and its Allies knew Ojukwu would be very difficult to handle if Biafra, with its human resources and crude oil, were allowed to win the war and remain independent nation.

Federal, State and County Police Chiefs are not elected in USA. Besides, I guess the assumed premise of your thread is baseless. The only law enforcement position elected in USA is County Sheriff or City commissioner of police.

USA, the act of policing is very local. The federal government does not control state or county police. However, the federal government has the power to investigate the excesses of all police departments in the country.

I am surprised that a lot of people, especially South Easterners are advocating for a break up of Nigeria at this point in time because of the Boko Haram insurgency. That would be playing into the hands of the insurgents. If the country splits up, Boko Haram would easily beat the moderate muslins into submission and high jack power in Northern Nigeria. Remember northern Nigeria would stretch to Kwara in the west and Benue to the east. Nsuka is just 20mins from benue. So it would be easy for the fundamentalists to extend their Jihad to the east and the west and east.

Do the Igbos think they would be safer with a fundamentalist Muslim nation as a neighbour? They should ask Pakistan having Taliban as Neighbour. In fact a fundamentalist Northern Nigeria would destabilize the whole sub region.

The strategy of containing Bako Haram is to fight them under a powerful unified Nigeria and make sure the radical brand of Islam does not overwhelm the moderate Muslims.

I can tell you that the fundamental muslins have lots of backing ; financially, logistically and training wise from Iran, who also created Hizbollah to be a government of itself in Lebanon. Iran is preparing for their eventual war with Israel and US and they would need the support of a fundamentalist Nigeria.
If we want to break Nigeria, we should do it under controlled situation and not be pushed into knee jerk reaction and starting and unplanned conflict we have no control over the the eventual outcome.
Quit smoking the crap that makes you hallucinate while manning your keyboard. It took the entire northern region, both Muslims and Christians, western region, mid-western region, large number of easterners, British, Egypt, USSR, Australia, Arab League of Nations, Iran, Niger, Chad, Republic of Dahomey and Cameroon almost three years to subdue Biafra.

If Nigeria should disintegrate tomorrow, the hat of uneasiness about being invaded by neighbors should be worn by the other countries not Biafra or Republic of Igbo land.

The Sokoto Caliphate jihadists beat a hasty retreat at fringe borders such as Akinia, Akpanya and Ayangba during the epic battles of Huasa/Fulani-Akagbe wars where Igbo warriors perfected the act of separating heads from bodies.

Do you think it is a mere coincidence that Ndigbo remain the worst nightmare to northern region of Nigeria?

Akintola and Awolowo simply differed on Ideology

After the 1959 election which saw Azikwe NCNC aligning with NPC . The Ibos being the more educated tribe got all the juicy govt appointments and Akintola viwed that politics is a game of numbers and aliances thought the only way he can get govt benefits for his people was by aligning with the NPC

Awolowo differed, Awo would rather maintain his principles and stay in the opposition than ally with the northen NPC

Akintola formed his NNDP and won the election which paved way for several Yorubas to get into the central govt.

E.g the VC of UNILAG and UI were Ibos due to the NCNC-NPC alliance, Immediately Akintola got into power Prof Saburi Biobaku became the VC

This is a clear case of jaundiced story by ill-informed tribal bigot. There were at least three Yoruba sons who were federal ministers with portfolio when position of minister in Nigeria was likened to a piece of gem. The folks like Rosiji, Akinjide and Akinloye became minister when such position was the toast of tribal bigots.

I read your link, it was nothing more than a fictitious romantic story. I had a feeling that you didn't really have an idea of what the problem was. The Action Group decided on the political ideology of Democratic Socialism which is based on using revenue for the advancement of its people through education, welfare, agriculture, etc. Now Akintola did not believe in this ideology. He liked the idea of feudalism that was practiced in the North which was why it was so easy to align with Bello and Balewa. It is through that this alignment with the North opened up opportunities for Yoruba people to serve in Balewa's Government but that was a self-serving approach because serving in government in itself does not empower the people. For all the power that Bello and Balewa had, what did they do for their people? They didn't believe in education for their people because more educated people would have led to more resistance against feudalism.

Of what use would it have been for people who do not share the same ideology to be in the same government? Should a communist serve in a capitalist government? How will the communist influence the capitalists? Will they not be constantly arguing about how to formulate and implement policy and budget? Let me give an example - Akintola did not believe in using the Western Region revenue for free education or any welfarist programs yet his son was the first Nigerian to attend Eton in England. Read Prof. Sam Aluko's take on the issue below and tell us how Akintola had the interest of Yoruba people at heart:

"The Akintola/Awo crisis

In fact, it was we, who caused the problem between Akintola and Awolowo. There was a group in the university then, led by Prof. Oyenuga. He was chairman of the Committee of Civil Liberty at that time. We had Prof. Odumosu, Prof. Wole Soyinka, some Europeans and myself. We said, as a group, the way things were going, we must have an ideology guiding us. Some were saying at that time that what the people were doing was only to take care of the rich, giving them big cars, staying in government houses, enjoying themselves except Awolowo who was living in his own house. So, we thought we had to have a guiding principle.

One, to plan the economy. Two, to inform government what individuals in government must do. So, we had what we called democratic socialism, which now became the policy of the Action Group. So, Awo said this democratic socialism we must try it, which he did into concrete programmes like agriculture, health, roads etc.

So, we were writing papers for him in Oke-Ado, Ibadan every two weeks. So, those were the papers that Awolowo then took to the party and Akintola was opposed to it. Akintola said if a man had agbada, he must not have buba. If he had buba, he must not have sokoto. That was exactly what caused their problem. Akintola had become premier by then, so he said why should Awolowo be organising people to write philosophy for the party. That when Awo was premier, they were writing for him as premier and that since he (Akintola) had assumed the premiership, they should be writing for him. He felt that Awo was out to undermine him, and said no, things could not continue like that. The major thing that caused the rift was that Akintola didn’t like democratic socialism. We were not the main problem though, but we were part of the problem. He had wanted the NPC’s capitalistic elitist way of government, which we opposed. "

I will let you digest this for now. If you want to continue then we can debate how his actions caused death and destruction in the Western Region.
Stop reproducing the junk stories, self-aggrandizing and fly-by-night fairy tales by Sam Aluko. It is not educative by inches. grin grin grin
