Kukutente23: In other words, importation is valid to replace local manufacturing? I wonder why you find it difficult to say it as you mean it instead of hiding under semantics. I suspect you're very much aware of the folly of your stand. The fact that no administration has been able to successfully implement tech transfer is part of why we are here today. It does not make tech transfer less viable rather, it makes it more desirable. What has happened last 9 years is to draw us further away from tech transfer instead of bringing us closer to it due to bad economic policies, corruption and mismanagement. In saying it as it is, we must also admit that these people bayed for power like no one else and only wrecked everything. Since 2015, they have made it clear that like it or not, the prior governments were getting something or the other right, whereas they are destroying everything like bulls in a china shop. Perhaps they need an expert in the mould of a NOI on board. |

Tonnyray: Nobody is being dishonest here. There is unprecedented inflation presently, nobody disagrees with it. My question is what does this change? You're right Nigeria was listed as Number 1 economy in Africa (from Ngozi Okonjo Iweala days if I remember correctly) but folks were still wailing it had zero bearing on the economic realities of the common man. I asked you to list the countries you know that NEVER got it economically topsy-turvy at some point in their national history but you declined. Do I term that "intellectual dishonesty" too?
Like the saying goes it's never so much about what happens, it's always more about our perception of and reaction to it. Whether we continue to wail or whether we join hands to fix Nigeria.
We can choose to cuss out this administration believing fully that a "better" man will fix Nigeria in 2027. It's all up to us. It's not about cussing out anyone but holding them to account as is done in any sane democracy. |

Whatever phase life brings someone quits and someone ups his game and capitalizes on it. I was interested in being educated on what administration successfully championed technology transfer from the multinationals since the failure of this is attributed to last 1 year.. or is it 9 years? Pls tell us specifically if it is true that we were the largest economy on Africa even up till last year, and that our GDP has halved in the last one year alone to put us at fourth. Answer that, No long thing. |

Tonnyray: Unfortunately this is not true. Wailings about poverty, austerity measures, Structural Adjustment Programs, essential commodities, "suffering and smiling" "economic crunch" etc. predate practically all of us chatting on this thread. Everybody comes with the tale of how things are woeful in their time but Eldorado in former times. Try again. And oh.. while at it kindly list the countries you know that NEVER experienced extraordinary economic mess in their historical trajectory. At this point I think you are being escapist. No one suggests there havent been difficulties before. I am in my mid forties and have lived here all my life. There has NEVER been the sort of inflation that has happened in the last one year in my adult memory. And it was triggered by specific policies tailored to please Bretton Woods institutions. Regardless whether you like my answer, I have given one. Its your turn. Dont be escapist. Be fair, and intellectually honest. PS: Is it also "not true" that we became the largest economy in Africa and have slipped to fourth in one year? |
Politics › Re: Nigeria’s Worrisome Corporate Exodus - Punch Editorial by DeepSight(m): 9:55pm On Jun 20, 2024 |
Tonnyray: You're yet to mention a good "phase" in Nigerian history. 1. 70s oil boom. 2. Early 60s, pre coup. 3. Most of the 80s, not bad. 4. Early 4th republic, not bad. OBJ was mostly a good president - 3rd Term and a few excesses barring. 5. Even the Yaradua / GEJ years saw us boom to the largest economy in Africa, In tha last one year alone, we have slipped from that pedestal to fourth. And I predicted this last year. Our GDP has halved in just one year. Does that say nothing to you? Now listen - however you rate these periods, the truth is we are in an extraordinary economic mess right now, the like of which this country has not experienced before. And it appears to me that you wish to wish away that fact as well as absolve the current government - and the last one - of complicity therein. I have answered your question, answer mine. |

Tonnyray: It's your understanding of "new players" that's flawed. I never said new manufacturers. Didn't you just mention importation wave? That gives credence to the fact that there'll never be a vacuum. Players will come and players will go. Those needs will always be met one way or the other.. and that until we get our acts together as a people to ensure our local industries ultimately wake up to the task just as has happened in some other once labeled 3rd world countries. You probably believe that can never happen here. You're entitled to your beliefs mate. Same way I'm entitled to mine. Have you considered the FDI implication and attendant pressure on the exchange rate with the inevitable riplle effects. For heavens sake, Total just took a USD 6 Billion investment away to Angola and another USD 600 Million to DRC and they specifically cited our policy instability. Are you listening to investors or are you determined to support a government no matter what happens. Examine your motivations with sincerity, thats all I advise. |

Please face fact. 1)There is hunger in the land 2) Nigerians are hungry 3) if there is massive food as u claimed food prices will not hike this much.
Mr I too know. U know much more than UN. who have vast data and trends of everything in Nigeria So a simple fact such as the cost of transportation affecting the cost of food is lost on you. And a simple fact such as the exchange rate affecting the cost of food is also lost on you. Well done, Mr. United Nations. |

You might not notice that woes this data reveal. From 2015 to 2024 out population has increased massively but food production falls.
Not only that the currency collapses made our food cheaper in Chad, Niger, Cameron and Benin and farmers prefer to sell to those with high currencies than Nigerians Oga if you dont live here, pls drop the topic. |

ivandragon: It is being done on purpose.
They know that Nigerians are very parochial and too attached to thier ethnic identity. So what they are doing in targeting one of the major ethnic groups and create hate. It is an organised racism strategy with backing at the highest levels.
That hate ensures the people are not united because when push comes to shove, everyone stands by thier ethnic groups.
The ultimate goal is to silence any sane dissenting voice. They cant think beyond tribe and its frightening. If the coming generation thinks like this, all is lost. They do they same to even Yoruba people who criticize BAT. Kukutente23, a young man I admire for his attention to detail told me they call him Chinedu. And he is Yoruba. |

Unfortunately the restaurant is aware of such antics by these call-girls and prevented the girls from marketing their goods in a prime spot of the restaurant. End of story sweetrace: Jeans is not allowed at restaurants with a dress code. It is not her ankle chains or her attractiveness. It is a requirement in such restaurants to dress formally. fastseo: Since u admit that food price was rising no soaring before the subsidy removal then what caused the rising before subsidy removal? So you know more than UN who have personel on group on humanitarian camps scattered across North East?
There is a no food security in Nigeria at present and there is short supply of food .. A perfect example is the tomato and pepper scarcity which people can't afford. Even the yam you pointed out is expensive and likewise garri.
I was in Nigeria when garri sold for 1700 from 900 earlier on then subsidy was still in place. There is no short supply of food oga, food boku. The prices are the issue. And if you compare the food inflation before subsidy removal/naira float to the one after subsidy removal/naira float, all I can say is maybe you live on the moon. |
Politics › Re: Accept Fg Offer Above N60,000 As New Minimum Wage, Opeyemi Bamidele To Nlc, Tuc by DeepSight(m): 6:04pm On Jun 20, 2024 |
Kukutente23: UN is not operating any farm in Nigeria that I know of. And I am not wrong. It is you who is assuming that rise in prices is due to food scarcity in your cocoon in the UK. I am on ground and I am telling you that farm markets are selling a tuber of yam between 2200-3000. What about beans? Beans is farmed mostly in the North Central and Southern part of the country. Why is it having rise in price with other foods that come from core North? Before subsidy removal price was rising not soaring. But subsidy removal just removed the brakes totally. Until Tinubu happened to Nigeria, you could get a wheel barrow filled with yam at 15k to18k. Right now, you can't get it less than 35k. Another angle is the currency devaluation which has made it unattractive for countries like Niger to bring food across the border into Nigeria, coupled with the recent fracas over the ouster of their President which Nigeria behaved belligerent. Niger Republic used to be a sure plug for food supply in Nigeria before. But with the currency devaluation, they don't see Nigeria as an attractive market It befuddles the mind how people who are starving routinely defend those starving them. I have told some people that while Bola Tinubu wields a knife to their throat and is about to slice their neck, they will still be singing "on your mandate" at a fever pitch, even as the knife sinks in and takes their life. |

sunboy: To your first comment; unfortunately the idea of indigene still defines our politics. Let’s not focus on Lagos on this, it’s all over the country. An Ibo man cannot be a governor in the north, nor can a Yoruba man be a governor in Ibo land. Lagos is one of the first states to allow non-indigenous people in their state house of assembly. Someone from other state within same region are still frustrated.
Right! While is criminality is the topic here, it’s pertinent to know that he’s a Nigerian. And not some foreigners coming to take over. Fully agree with you. Its all over the country. And yet, we have Nigerians who migrate abroad and become Ministers or Members of Parliament in other countries. |

Dont you lot realize how tiresome it is for other people that you call everyone who criticizes the government Igbo? In a country of over 350 tribes, anyone who criticizes the government must either be Igbo or an obidient? Does that make sense to you? You are free to carry on with such ridiculous stupidity. I am neither Ibo nor obidient, but that possibility could never occur to you could it? Is it that your plan is never to criticize your government no matter what it does? When you see the free developed countries of the world, is that what they do there - never criticize their leaders? How do you think you will make progress with such a bankrupt mindset? And even where something blatantly wrong or obviously corrupt is pointed out to you, despite your own suffering, your own privations, despite the fact that you are also feeling the pains imposed by your corrupt and rapacious leadership, rather than pause even for a moment to think - all that comes out from your mouth is "Igbo, rest."
