Most times when you make any statement that suggest anything but a victory for General Muhammadu Buhari before or during an election period in a gathering of his supporters you may be either greeted with insults or treated with disdain like someone who has just blasphemed against a holy prophet. No wonder, na Jonathan dem brother na.” Such statements leaves me wondering, does one´s place of origin in Nigeria automatically disqualifies him or her from objectively holding opinion on national issues? Putting National interest first, will it not be unfair to assume that someone like Nasir El- Rufai is unqualified to comment on President Jonathan candidacy simply because he is from the North-West geo-political Zone of Nigeria? Like many Africans in the diaspora who share the experience of living far away from home, I have come to see that our relationships are hardly influenced by tribe, ethnic group or country of origin. Like most people I have met, we have learnt to first be Africans before our tribe or nationality. It is from this position I will crave the understanding of all particularly supporters of General Muhammadu Buhari to allow me to exercise my fundamental human rights guaranteed under the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to comment on the political dynamics of my nation as it relates to the candidacy of the APC presidential candidate “General Muhammadu Buhari” in the 2015 General election. It is no news that General Buhari previously contested the presidential election in 2003 against ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo and lost. In 2007 against Late President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua and lost. And in 2011 against incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan which he also lost. By virtue of the number of presidential elections General Buhari has participated in as presidential candidate of different parties, he is not only the most experienced candidate in Nigeria´s election history, but there should be little or nothing anyone should be able to tell him about presidential elections in Nigeria. To say the least, with his wealth of experience in the last 10 years, he is in a better position to school anyone interested in the subject matter particularly when it comes to the aspect of defeat and knowing when the odds are against you and cannot change in a presidential contest. Hence, when the General said in 2011 “This campaign is the third and last one for me since after it I will not present myself again for election into the office of the president,” by default, I assumed he had finally come to the reality of the odds against him. Thus, to be told that the General was pressured to come back and contest, defiles all sense of reason. Before 2007, I had no strong thoughts as to how General Buhari would fare in the election. But in 2007, I was more than convinced he would lose. Similarly, In 2011 I was convinced Buhari would lose. Just like in previous years before 2011, it is with that same conviction I am predicting once again that General Muhamadu Buhari will lose again come 14th, February 2015. To ascribe his perpetual defeat to one factor will not only be unfair to history, but a total disregard to the truth and an injustice to the individuals, circumstances and scenarios that have characterised the Nigerian political landscape in the last couple of years and continue to play out against him. It is in this understanding that in the next couple of weeks before February 14th, I will try to bring to the fore some of the individual factors as they relate to the subject matter of a Buhari presidential campaign. To begin with, as of today, Many “Buharists” will agree with me that General Buhari is an anti- corruption crusader who has showed that he would stop at nothing in fighting corruption. His antecedents as military head of state speak for him. But in the same vein, many of them might disagree when I say that for the General, this is a factor that has over the years influenced his continual failure in every election since 2003. In August 1985, General Buhari was overthrown by General Ibrahim Badamosi Babaginda, the same man credited to being instrumental for him to be Head of State on the eve of 1984. Before the coup by Gen Babaginda, it was rumoured that Gen. Buhari had planned to retire some top military officers on allegation of corruption and Gen. IBB was to be among those to be retired. And as we would say today, corruption fought back. Once the coup took place, Buhari was then detained in Benin City until 1988. In the years preceding the government of ex- President Olusegun Obasanjo and thereafter, Gen. IBB and his friends have not only become rich, powerful and influential figures, but also indispensable power brokers who have remained relevant through alleged corrupt practices. If Gen. Buhari wants to really fight corruption, who are those that he will be fighting? Will Gen. IBB be spared? No offence, but if Gen. IBB be the man that he is, it is one reason Gen. He was barely one year old when his parents neglected him and parted ways after a serious fight, simply because he was an albino, a rare breed that was contrary to what they had both expected. Forty years after, Mr. Abdullahi Obafemi, has yet to recover from the painful knowledge that his parents abandoned him. They tossed him between each other until his grandmother, who was living in northern Nigeria, took over his custody. Obafemi is still haunted by his history, the humiliation and rejection he continues to suffer from the public daily. “I am my parents’ only child. I learnt their marriage ended abruptly the moment my mother gave birth to me as an albino. In fact, I learnt my mother screamed, Eh! Afin ni mo bi (Ha, I gave birth to an albino) when she saw me. “While they were busy denying me and fighting over who would take care of me, my grandmother took me away from them,” Obafemi said with a note of sadness. Growing up was also not easy for Obafemi as he helplessly endured the constant discrimination meted against people like him. Although albinos are no strange beings as they only lack the pigment that gives colouration to the skin and body parts, called melanin, they are usually discriminated against. Apart from their skin and brown hair, many albinos suffer from short sight vision, thus, they usually have challenge with seeing objects, whether far or near. Obafemi recalled his tough experience in school. His bad sight affected his learning in school even when he sat in front of the class. He said, “I wasn’t seeing things clearly and I couldn’t afford to buy reading glasses. I had to rely on my classmates so I could copy from their notes but they often treated me with disdain. Nobody wanted to move close to an albino. “Thank God I was brilliant, it was when they saw that I was very good that they came close to me, not because they liked me but they knew I would always solve questions for them so they could pass.” Despite the resilience and hard work that saw Obafemi through school, getting a good job has remained an elusive desire. He was rejected, abused and humiliated everywhere he looked for job because of his albinism. Obafemi studied Building Technology at the Yaba College of Technology, Lagos. “The pains, humiliation and rejection I went through before I could graduate are things I don’t like to remember. It is now more painful that nobody wants to employ me because of my skin and some employers even make jest of me. “There was a time I applied for a job, and having seen my application, I was invited to write a test. When I got there, one of the interview panel members said, ‘So you are an albino, don’t worry; we will invite you some other time.’ “When I later got a job as a civil servant, I had to learn painting to augment my meagre income and even when people want to give me job, some people would say I wouldn’t see very well because of my eyes. They say I would paint green instead of blue. I lost many jobs because of that too but I got few on compassionate grounds. “There was a day I went to apply for a security job, I was asked by the company officials how I would see people coming in and I told them I was not blind. But they told me that I was the one who needed security instead, not for me to be a security man.” Obafemi has had to combat rejection in many ways, including relationship with women. “Thankfully, I have a nine-year-old son now, who is not an albino, but the family of his mother didn’t allow me to marry her because I was an albino and they said I wasn’t rich enough. However, I am happy I have one already, but I wish I was not an albino, because life would have been easier for me, like others,” he added. Peculiar troubles Obafemi’s situation underscores the challenge being faced by people affected by albinism. Inasmuch as they are also humans, many of them have dreams of what to become in life but a number of them have had their hope of a better life replaced by frustration and utter dislike for themselves. Tola Banjoko is another albino. She suffers from bad sight, and that alone has cost her the desire to go to school as she had to drop out of school. Born into a family of 10, and as the only albino in the family, life dealt cruelly with her. She told Saturday Punch that not even the idea of sitting in front of the class would help her situation and since her mother could not buy the recommended glasses to aid her vision, she had to stop going to school and opted to run a kiosk. She said, “When I complained to my mother that I didn’t see things on the board, she didn’t really know what to do. My mother went to plead with my teacher to allow me to sit in front but that didn’t solve the problem. “I was able to finish primary school because one of my teachers would sit beside me and read the questions to me during exams, but there was no such help when I got to a public secondary school that my parents could afford. “In JSS1, one of my teachers would always tell me to go and sit at the back because she said I was too tall to sit in front. Even when I tried to explain why I needed to sit there, she wouldn’t listen. And my own sight was so bad that I could put number one in two sometimes. When I became so disturbed about everything, I stopped schooling, more so that I couldn’t afford the pair of glasses that would have aided my sight.” Banjoko told Saturday PUNCH that after she dropped out of school, her skin began to change for the worst when she had to defy the golden rule for albinos not to roam in the sun, to look for a job until she couldn’t get any and had to settle for running a small kiosk on the street where she earns a living. “While I was going out to look for job, it was like fire was burning my skin each time I was in the sun until I was forced to start selling things. I still want to go to school and I don’t want to lose hope, but I feel very bad that I am an albino because my education has suffered for it and that is a huge loss for me. I wish I was not an albino but what can I do?” she lamented. Lamentation, a shared currency While Banjoko had to drop out of school because of her sight, Chiamaka Chikwem, 26, managed to go to school but has not had much to show for it, even though she finished with a Second Class Upper Division. She told Saturday PUNCH that she feels so unlucky and unfortunate being an albino because of the disappointments, marginalisation and discrimination she has had to live with. Chikwem, a graduate of Microbiology from Michael Okpara University, Umudike, Abia State lamented that she had been so frustrated to the extent of considering suicide when it seemed the doors of favour had been shut against her. “Even when I know I am qualified for a job, I don’t get it and some even say it to my face that an albino cannot do their kind of work. Albinism does not affect our intelligence, we are not blind, it is just the skin colour and our sight. I believe in myself and I know I will make it because I won’t give up,” she lamented. |

A Federal Capital Territory High Court judge, Justice Valentine Ashi, on Wednesday ordered security agents, including the police and operatives of the Department of State Service, to confiscate the latest book of ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo, My Watch. The judge of the FCT Wuse Zone II court said the publication of the book, which was presented to the public on Tuesday in Lagos, contravened the order of the court restraining the publication. Justice Ashi also gave Obasanjo 21 days within which to explain why he should not be punished for flouting the court order. He ordered that the enrolled orders of the court be served on all media houses in the country and be equally served on the defendant by publication in two national daily newspapers. The judge held, “I hold the defendant not only in contempt of the court, but to show cause why he should not be punished for contempt and ordered to undo what he has wrongly done. “The defendant, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, shall be given 21 days, from the day this order is served on him, to show cause, via affidavit, why he should not be punished for contempt committed by publishing and distributing for sale to the public, the book, My Watch, in plain disregard of the pendency of substantive suit and the order of this court made on December 5, 2014 restraining him from doing so. “The defendant, whether by himself, agents, servants, privies or whatever name called, is hereby restrained from further publication or offering for sale or distribution, in any way or manner, the book called My Watch or the like of the visual or written materials which contains a re-publication or statement extracted from the letter referred to by the plaintiff.” The judge had on December 5 restrained Obasanjo from going ahead with the publication pending the determination of the N20bn libel suit instituted against him by a member of the Peoples Democratic Party in Ogun State, Buruji Kashamu. Kashamu’s lawyer, Dr. Alex Iziyon (SAN), had in his ex parte application before the court on December 5, argued that Obasanjo should be restrained from publishing the book since the content related to the subject matter of the libel suit. The content of the book was said to be related to a letter dated December 2, 2013 written by Obasanjo to President Goodluck Jonathan, in which Kashamu was described by the former President as a fugitive wanted for drug offences in the United States of America. Iziyon had argued that since part of the content of the autobiography related to the December 2, 2013 letter, which is the subject matter of the libel suit, it was wrong for Obasanjo to be allowed “to proceed to comment on, write books about or make publications on the issue yet to be decided by the court.” The court had after granting Kashamu’s application and by making the restraining order on December 5, fixed Wednesday for the continuation of the substantive libel suit. But Obasanjo had on Tuesday made public presentation of the book, arguing at the venue of the event that the book had been published before the court was misled into making the orders. He also said the judge ought to be punished for making such order. The court on Wednesday heard Iziyon and Obasanjo’s lawyer, Realwon Okpanach, on the plaintiff’s motion for interlocutory injunction, and motion for order to set aside the earlier interim orders. In his ruling, Justice Ashi held that it was wrong for Obasanjo to have proceeded to publish the book despite the fact that a libel suit, which subject matter formed part of the content of the book, was still pending before the court. The judge said the orders he made on December 5 were still pending. He further held that it was immaterial that the book was published before the interim orders were made. The judge said Obasanjo ought not to have published the book because he was aware of the part-heard libel suit relating to the letter he wrote to President Jonathan, accusing Kashamu of being a fugitive wanted in the USA. “The fact that the book was published in November is irrelevant. As long as the substantive suit is not yet determined, no party is entitled to publish or comment on material facts that are yet to be decided on by the court,” the court held. Justice Ashi also ordered “the Inspector General of Police, the Director General of the Department of State Services and the Comptroller of Customs to recover the published book from all book stands, sales agents, vendors, the sea and airports and deposit them with his court’s registrar pending the determination of the substantive suit.” The judge rejected argument by the defendants that the interim orders were wrongly made as the plaintiff failed to produce the book to show that it actually contained the alleged libellous materials. He held, “What I find difficult to understand is why the defendants went through the pains to depose to the ISBN number and other details about the book, which they said was published since November before the interim order was obtained on December 5, without supplying the court with copies of the book. “This would have served to disprove the claim by the applicant/plaintiff that the book contains a reproduction of the letter, which formed the subject of the libel case before the court. “The fact that the book was published in November, while the substantive case was still pending is contemptuous enough.” The court then adjourned January 13 for further proceedings. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari with a mock online election which presented him as the most popular presidential candidate for the 2015 election. This, Buhari's supporters are going to bank on to cause mayhem as they did after the 2011 election if he loses as expected (after-all he has lost 3 presidential elections consecutively). S peaker of the House of Representatives, Hon Aminu Tambuwal and his party, the All Progresives Congress, APC, on Friday dragged his former party, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, the national chairman of the party, Alhaji Adamu Muazu, the deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, the Inspector General of Police, the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, and the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, before a federal high court in Abuja. Speaker of the House of Reps, Aminu Tambuwal The Speaker who recently defected from the ruling party to the opposition wants the court to stop moves being made by the PDP to declare his seat vacant. Tambuwal insists that he remains the Speaker of the House of Representatives until the expiration of his current term which is 5 June, 2015. He wants the court to make an order of perpetual injunction restraining the defendants from taking any steps whatsoever to abrogate, diminish or infringe on his rights and privileges as the Speaker of the House of Representatives before the expiration of his current tenure. 20141031_122542 Further more, the embattled Speaker wants the court to restrain INEC from accepting any nomination of candidates or otherwise organizing or conducting a ‘bye election for the purpose of replacing him or taking over his seat as the Speaker of the House of Representatives. The All Progressives Congress (APC) has called on President Goodluck Jonathan to show better understanding of democracy by immediately restoring the police security details the Inspector General of Police unlawfully withdrew from the Speaker of the Federal House of Representatives, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal. According to a statement issued in Abuja on Thursday by its National Publicity Secretary, Lai Mohammed, the party described the announcement of the withdrawal of the Speaker’s security details by the Inspector General of Police as a usurpation of the role of the judiciary by the Inspector General of Police especially bearing in mind that the question of the interpretation of Section 68(1)(g) of the Constitution on which the Inspector General of Police anchored his illegal act is currently before the courts for resolution. The party said for the avoidance of doubt, the position, including the manner a person becomes the Speaker of the House of Representatives is to be found in the Constitution, and no constitutional provision or legislation says membership of the ruling or dominant party in the House is a pre-requisite. “Furthermore, as the number four citizen of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the security detail and apparatus attached to the person of the Speaker is not based on his lineage, person and or political leaning. It is on account of the position and the protection required for that position and in Nigeria’s best interest. “This unfortunate use and deployment of Nigeria’s security forces in a partisan and political way portends danger and further weakens important institutions of governance and jeopardizes national security. Under President Jonathan, we now have a Police Force that is monitoring and making conclusions with respect to party membership, qualification, of an otherwise elected official. This is unheard of in any decent democracy. “It is unfortunate that President Jonathan who had been a successive long term and unique beneficiary of our democracy and Constitution is now demonstrating the greatest disregard for the laws that govern and guide us as a people,” the statement says. President Jonathan who is the only individual who benefited from the same Constitution to become a Governor from a Deputy Governor without an election and from a Vice President to President in similar legal circumstances now desecrates the same Constitution. “The All Progressives Congress rejects this challenge to democracy and modern society. We reject President Jonathan’s illegality and call for respect and compliance with the law. In Nigeria, when certain drugs are advertised for usage, especially common drugs like antimalarials, at the end of the advert, they often say, “If symptoms persist after three days, consult a doctor.” In some other cases, they tell you to consult a doctor “if symptoms persist after five days.” But, we also see adverts on brands of paracetamol (acetaminophen) which tell you they are for treating “fever, chills and aches,” ending with “if symptoms persist after three days, consult a doctor.” That is as dangerous as a statement can be! In studies on self-medication in Nigeria, analgesics, where paracetamol belongs, ranks among the most abused. Among the common paracetamols we have in Nigeria include Avipol, Boska, Calpol, Daga, Kaka, Lotemp, Painax, Panda, Pancemol, Panadol, Pentax, Remidol, Saridon P, Uncle Joe, and Piccan for teething, which has diphenhydramine added to the paracetamol. Some of them have “Extra” after their names to mean they also have caffeine. Chronic usage of paracetamol especially in high doses can damage the liver. Little wonder there has been an increase in liver disease in the country in recent time. If there is an obvious cause of body ache, or you were involved in exercise, some strenuous work or you have minor sprain or some similar things, or a child has fever after immunisation, the analgesic and antipyretic effects of paracetamol may be enough. But certainly not when there is a fever which cannot be explained, occurring alone, or in association with other symptoms. The wait for three or five days for the usage of paracetamol when there is fever is usually based on what obtains in some Western countries where the most common cause of fever is a virus, which is often self-limiting. But in Nigeria, it is not a virus. It is malaria or some infection. I laugh when I see a dubious commercial where the individual is sweating, feverish, with chills and rigour, and pops two tablets of paracetamol and “everything” is “gone,” the person is back to “work”, back to “normal life.” What a fraud! I recall with sadness one day while I was at work and a young woman rushed into the consulting room with a pleasant chubby boy infant. But when I examined the baby, he was already stone dead! It was difficult to accept that that baby was dead, even to me. When I broke the sad news to the mother, she wailed uncontrollably, claiming that the baby had been having fever and she had been using a common brand of paracetamol that ends with “babe”. She said she had been using it as she was “advised.” You have heard of the child whose mother has been giving him or her “teething medicine” which of course has paracetamol and dyphenhydramine , but ends up being admitted in the hospital. Or, the fellow who has been on paracetamol for his fever for days because it is “stress oh,” but ends up in the hospital ward, with exhaustion. Many have been using paracetamol for a headache that won’t go, only to die of stroke because they had been suffering from hypertension that was not detected, all because they wouldn’t seek medical help early. Another person had been using paracetamol for “a long time”, for a so-called nagging headache. It was after a lot of persuasion that they sought proper medical help, and it turned out the person needed eye glasses. And since they have been using the glasses the headache has not come back. But imagine all the load of paracetamol to the liver! From a Nigerian perspective perhaps it is even more ominous for the individual if the paracetamol controls the fever! Then, the individual tends to relax, and not taking further action. It is perhaps better for the individual if the paracetamol does not control the fever. Paradoxically, this is where fake drugs may save lives! Because in this situation, anyone who loves their health will seek medical care if their fever persists. But you could say that for other people, not Nigerians. Nigerians don’t come early to the hospital. Even with the three or five days, in Nigeria, the wait is usually longer! It could be weeks. And all other sorts of roadside herbal concoction may have been used. A child will only be brought when the child stops feeding, and all other problems have set in, including severe anaemia and even kidney failure. To those who are marketing paracetamol, please, every advert on any brand of paracetamol must end with “after you have taken the drug go immediately to see a doctor!” This is particularly so with those with fever, and especially in children. For you who use paracetamol, be wary of commercials on brands of paracetamol! I cannot overemphasise by saying paracetamol only suppresses fever, while a definitive action is to be taken. Paracetamol does not cure what is causing the fever! By continually using paracetamol to “suppress” your fever, on yourselves and your loved ones, without seeing a doctor thereafter, you – and your loved ones may be dying silently and slowly.
