Buhari is a great man in his own right and I respect him as an elder statesman. But as far as a democracy is concerned in this digital age and time, Buhari is not the best that Nigeria has to offer.

Abuse of power is the worst form of corruption in leadership. Buhari abused power when he was military Head of State.

When Buhari seized power, he threw Alex Ekwueme into prison in KiriKiri and kept Shehu Shagari under house arrest. How do you explain such double standards?

During Buhari, journalists were brutalized, hushed and muzzled. Tunde Thompson and Nduka Irabor were jailed under the evil laws of the Buhari regime.

During the Buhari regime, 53 suitcases were smuggled into the country at a time the nation's borders were closed because of the change in the colour of the national currency in 1984. Have we forgotten?

Under Buhari's regime, there was a law against 18 year olds going to Hajj. Tunde Idiagbon took his 14 year old son to Hajj and nothing happened.

Lawal Ojuolape, Benard Ogedengbe and Bartholomew Owoh; these three men were ordered to be executed by Buhari under a retroactive decree for the crime of drug trafficking which didn't carry a death penalty wen they committed the crime.

The late Tai Solarin was imprisoned and refused treatment for his asthma by this same Buhari.

Secretary General of the ruling NPN Uba Ahmed who was Buhari's tribesman was arrested at the airport only to be released on Buhari's orders and allowed to fly out of the country.

Buhari, like IBB and Abdusalami Abubakar treated the Oputa Panel with disdain. He refused to show up at the panel.

I will not vote for Buhari in 2015; not even if he picks the Pope as his running mate.

As for the Oputa panel, no honest and reasonable person will run away from any law however mundane it is. Unfortunately for General Buhari he refused to appear before the Justice Oputa panel which was just a fact finding committee headed by an eminent jurist like Justice Oputa. If General Buhari is clean and honest why did he run away from the Oputa panel?

He is a bigot, his bigotry was highly exercise when he placed President Shagari under house arrest inside a palatial mansion in Ikoyi while he locked up Shagari’s Vice, Alex Ekwueme in Kirikiri Prison. Shagari is Hausa/Fulani like him while Alex Ekwueme is an Igboman.

Pls dont remind me of the brutal era of buhari, Buhari put in place a retroactive law that killed three men, by public execution.

He jailed Ndukar Irabor and Tunde Thompson of the Guardian on stories that were factually true under Decree 4. He had told the Nigerian journalists then that it did not matter whether the story reported was true or not, if his regime did not like it, the writer would go to jail.

Ikemba Emeka Ojukwu, another Igboman who returned from 13years exile just a little over a year then was as well locked up in Kiri Kiri Prison by meanhearted Buhari.Up till today we are not told what was Emeka’s offence.

Busari Adelakun died of ulcer because Buhari refused him to be taken out of prison for immediate medical attention. The then Governor of Ogun State,Bisi Onabanjo suffered similar fate which we were told led to his untimely death.

PoliticsExposed-opposition Parties Behind Subsidy Removal Protest - Aregbesola by denko(op): 7:26am On Jun 01, 2012
The Osun State governor, Mr Rauf regbesola, has confessed that the opposition parties in the country spearheaded the January nationwide mass protest against fuel subsidy removal by the Federal Government, and exposed the trillion naira subsidy removal fraud.

He said in a polity like Nigeria where organised life is gradually grinding to a halt with epileptic power supply, mass unemployment, dysfunction of all federal institutions, including mass misery, poverty and increasing disillusionment of the citizens, there was a yawning need for a viable opposition to provide leadership for the people; to lead them to to the promised land.

The governor stated this recently at a one-day lecture/merit award ceremony organised by the Niger State chapter of the Conference of Nigeria Political Parties, held at the UK Bello Arts Theatre, Minna.

Aregbesola, who was represented on the occasion by the state Commissioner for Land, Physical Planning and Urban Development, Mr Muyiwa Ige, however, expressed regret that the nation’s democracy had floundered because the opposition had not played its existential role.

“If the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), for instance, has its way, there will be no opposition parties in Nigeria. Indeed, the PDP, through the Federal Government, has systematically criminalised opposition and in every state controlled by the party, opposition members are hounded, killed, maimed and persecuted,” Aregbesola said.

Accordingly, he said it is this same evil spirit that drives election rigging and visitation of violence on protesters by the PDP, adding that this principle of zero tolerance of opposition is all ramifying.

Why are the Yoruba’s protesting....after all Ahmadu Bello University which I attended (1980-1983) is one of the prestigious universities in Nigeria. The Northerners are so proud that the university is named after their illustrious son Sir Ahmadu Bello. Why are the Yoruba’s not proud of MKO and happy that a foremost university in Nigeria is named after him? It all makes me sad. == PS. Muhammadu Buhari is an oligarch who does not believe in equality before the law. The way he jailed Lateef Jakande, Jim Nwobodo, Ambrose Ali, Pa Adekunle Ajasin, Chief Ayo Ojewumi on cases that had no foundation and allowed Awwal Ibrahim, the then Niger State governor, who was arrested in Heathrow Airport in London with 14 million pounds sterling and several millions of Niara and dollars to be under house arrest is enough evidence.

He also allowed Shehu Kangiwa, Sokoto State Governor who conducted and supervised the famous Bakolori Massacre of poor peasant farmers whose land were appropriated without compesation to remain under house arrest.

1(a) Ayo Ojewumi became blind as a result of his imprisonment over false charges and died shortly after.

1 (b) Prof. Ambrose Alli also became blind as a result of this false imprisonment. When he died, he had only one undeveloped plot of land to his name.

1(c) Pa Adekule Ajasin was never the same after his eventual release and remained sickly for the rest of his life. Whe he died, he never had any property anywhere in the world except the one he had built from his sweat as long term teacher and school principal in Owo township.

Buhari supervised the smuggling of 53 suitcases filled with cash through the Murtala Mohammed International Airport against the protests of General Tunde Idiagbon and ironically, Abubakar Atiku, the then Director General of the Customs who later became the Vice President and a compromised politician himself. This smuggling of the suit cases were supervised by his ADC, Col. Mustapha Jokolo.

PoliticsHow Gen. Azazi Indicted The North - This Is Real South South Blood by denko(op): 7:40pm On May 03, 2012
GENERAL Andrew Azazi’s speech at the just concluded South-South Economic summit was spot on. Albeit too many analysts and political masquerades have tried to deconstruct the speech into components that suit their selfish political objectives, the keynote of the NSA was clear – that political discontent engendered by the outcome of the 2011 presidential elections, created conducive nesting environment for the escalation of the Boko Haram Jihad.

The deeper meaning of his speech is the absolute response to United States’ posturing that economic alienation is the principal motor of Boko Haram. The NSA did not completely disagree with Ambassador Johnny Carson, but he delivered a didactic talk.

General Azazi questioned the logic of a party constitution that seemingly closed the door on President Goodluck Jonathan, when in fact the constitution which made him president clearly said: ‘hey man, you can run’.

Disgruntled politicians

He indicted disgruntled politicians in the North, who have resorted to playing dirty, for sponsoring the terrorist organization and suggested that the rhetoric of these political elements in the build up to the 2011 elections catalyzed the resurgence of the Boko Haram Jihad. Who mounted pressure on Zakari Biu – the police chief – to free the Christmas day bomber, Kabiru Sokoto? Common Nigerians need to wake up!

After my thematic audit of the speech, my conclusion is simple: It was the controversy that the PDP stirred with their overstretched debate on zoning and the eventual victory of the PDP candidate – in an election judged as fair – that engendered the momentum for disgruntled opposition politicians to abet the metamorphosis of Boko Haram.

Gen. Andrew Owei Azazzi( Rtd ),National Security Adviser to President Jonathan with Air Marshal OLuseyi Petinrin ,Chief of Defence Staff with others security chiefs during their inspection of the seized arms and ammunition.

Furthermore, the careless rhetoric of some eminent citizens from within the PDP and the opposition – like those who even promised to make the nation ungovernable- that fertilized the ovary of the new Boko Haram. An ovary genetically engineered to birth in 2015, I think.

While Gen. Azazi did not rule out the poverty, economic constraints (economic alienation as US Ambassador Carson puts it) and the dearth of opportunities in the North as supplementary cause of the new Boko Haram, I interpreted his speech to mean that, the metamorphosis of Boko Haram has principally been driven by political interests. The old Boko Haram has evolved into a political Boko Haram.

What Gen. Azazi perhaps forgot is that his appointment as national security adviser has in no little way angered the same elements that have actuated the metamorphosis of Boko Haram. Perhaps, to validate the pseudo theory that only Nigerians from a particular part of the country could become NSAs as it has been from the day the position was established. General Azazi’s appointment like the 2011 election results has also in some way been seen as a deprivation of some sort.

Forget the posturing of Ambassador Carson, America knows the truth, they also understand the root. While the United States has a duty to protect its strategic oil interest in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria, it also has a duty to protect the interest of the North.

The control of most of the nation’s oil wealth is directly and indirectly largely still under the big oil moguls of Northern Nigeria. Also, bearing in mind that almost all of these Northern oil moguls export their crude oil to the United States of America, and also have mostly American technical partners, it is safe to suggest that beyond Nigeria being America’s most important strategic ally in Sub-Saharan Africa, the United States has a good deal of specific interest in North.

Clearly, the United States’ posturing is that it will be politically injurious to their strategic interest in the region, if they list the terrorist sect Boko Haram as a Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO) or even attempt to support the Federal Government’s military effort overtly.

The condition for the listing of a terrorist organization like Boko Haram as an FTO is mostly based on political permutations rather than its level of viciousness or the threat the organization poses to local and world peace. For instance, Hezbollah is considered as an FTO by the United States but not the United Kingdom.

Downplaying of Boko Haram threat

To justify their posturing, the US has simply downplayed Boko Haram’s threat to US strategic interest, blaming it simply on poverty and chiding the Nigerian government for economic alienation of the North. Like Nigeria, Indonesia is waging one of the world’s most determined campaigns against terrorism – and much of the credit goes to the American trained unit, Detachment 88.

Indonesia is clearly, by virtue of its size, location and status as a democracy, one of the most important countries to the United States in Asia. The country has more Muslim faithful than Iran, Iraq, Egypt and Saudi Arabia combined. The strategic sea lanes that pass through and along Indonesian territory carry one-third of the world’s sea-borne trade, and half of the world’s oil passes through the Malacca Strait.

In February, 2012, Jemaah Ansharut Tauhid (JAT) the terrorist organization (with lot of similarities with Boko Haram), which seeks to establish an Islamic caliphate in Indonesia, was added to the Foreign Terrorist Organization list by the United States, following its attacks on Indonesian police, government personnel and citizens and churches.

While the audacity of the Bali bombings proved to be an epiphany for Indonesians awakening them to the home-grown terrorists in their midst and helping force a national consensus against terrorism, Nigeria still lacks the needed consensus, as Boko Haram has become an instrument in the hands of some selfish, desperate and disgruntled politicians, whose sole aim perhaps, is to embarrass their political adversaries.

Comparatively, Nigerian security agencies have busted more terrorist cells, explosive factories and training camps than Indonesia; taken out more terrorists than the Detachment 88; and thwarted more terrorist plots than Indonesian agencies.

Boko Haram has killed much more police officers than the JAT; they have bombed much more churches than the JAT (JAT has only successfully bombed one church, with no death recorded); they have killed more government officials than the JAT; they have killed more innocent citizens than the JAT; and even boast of a larger army and potential recruitment pool than JAT considering the “economic alienation” of the North as Ambassador J. Carson puts it. They have executed the most daring kinds of attacks and have a higher horror profile than the JAT with regards to foreigners killed. Yet, while the United States considers JAT good for listing as a Foreign Terrorist Organization, it doesn’t consider Boko Haram enough threat to its strategic interest.

Apprehensions about anti-US sentiments

The US is apprehensive about anti-US sentiments not just in Northern Nigeria, but also in Chad and Cameroun – countries where US protects major investments and Boko Haram poses a major potential threat. Chad Basin and Chad Republic have always been potential sources of oil.

The United States definitely has it eyes on the basin. There are currently four oil prospecting licences in the Chad basin already. Then just across the Nigerian border, in Chad Republic, an American company Chevron is pumping out over 3.5 million barrels of crude oil every month.

In 2000, Chevron became a participant in two major projects in Chad. The first was the development of the Doba oil fields in the south. The second involved the construction and operation of a pipeline to transport oil from those fields to an export terminal facility in Cameroon. Together, they represent one of the largest industrial projects in Africa.

Now, that is what they call strategic interest, so do not blame the USA. They turn their eyes the other way, stay out of the fray and let Nigeria fight her battle alone. But the US must be told the metamorphosis of Boko Haram is not yet complete. Yesterday, it was about Borno State; today it’s about national politics; the Boko Haram of tomorrow still remains a conundrum.

Security experts agree that our security agencies are beginning to slice the sect. I am confident that soon, the more organized, more sophisticated operations of Boko Haram will gradually diminish. However, security agencies must be advised never to undermine the threat of lone Boko Haram Jihadists. They must proactively lookout for fresh extremist tactics such as book bombs and letter bombs, method Indonesian terrorist cells now use. The intellectual cover Boko Haram has enjoyed in the past few months has exposed that beyond the ragtag group patronized by Ali Modu Sheriff, is a newly reformed terrorist organization working the dictates of experienced political masquerades.

Fighting terrorism in a democracy is difficult – the stakes are high. The process sometimes may seem slow because the constitution and civil liberties must be protected. Stanford professor Laura K. Donohue in her book – The Cost of Counter terrorism: Power, Politics and Liberty- warns of the risks to fundamental individual rights when democracies establish counter-terrorist regimes. She discards the logic of governments framing their initiatives in terms of a choice between security and freedom and argues that loss of liberty is not necessarily balanced by gain in safety. General Azazi’s strategy has been grounded on this principle: he has insisted that our security strategy must first protect our liberty.

On a final note, no cause justifies terrorism – not poverty, not politics. Some have terrorized because they want some nations off the surface of the earth; some have because they want Sharia imposed on nations; some have terrorized because they want power and freedom. So should Israel then apologize for her sovereignty? Should America apologize for her liberty?

Should Indonesia apologize for her secularism? Should Nigeria apologize for her constitution? Hell no.

PoliticsBoko Haram Spokesperson: Why We Attacked THISDAY Newspaper Offices-premium TIMES by denko(op): 9:32pm On Apr 26, 2012
The extremist sect, while claiming responsibility for Thursday's attacks, says more bombings are coming the way of the media.

The Jama'atu Ahlis Sunna Lidda'awati Wal-Jihad, popularly known as Boko Haram, says it attacked THISDAY Thursday to send a strong message to the media that it would no longer condone reports misrepresenting it in the press, or blaming it for acts it knows nothing about.

Abul Qaqa, spokesperson for the sect told Premium Times, in an exclusive interview, that his organisation was fed up with the deliberate misinformation being peddled about it in the Nigerian and foreign media.

“We have repeatedly cautioned reporters and media houses to be professional and objective in their reports. This is a war between us and the Government of Nigeria; unfortunately the media have not been objective and fair in their report of the ongoing war, they chose to take side,” Mr. Qaqa said.

He identified three instances where he claimed his group was deliberately misrepresented by the media.

The first, according to him, was the rumour of his capture by the Nigerian intelligence agencies.

“Some reporters are aware that I am Abul Qaqa, they know my voice through our long interactions and they also know the role of Abu Darda who heads the enlightenment committee and sometimes facilitates interviews; yet they (media) go by the unsubstantiated view of government that Abul Qaqa is in custody and I am the new spokesman or number two,” he said.

Premium Times had continuously reported that Abul Qaqa was not arrested contrary to reports and that it was Abu Darda, another member, that was arrested.

The second misrepresentation, according to Mr. Qaqa, was the reporting on the kidnappings of foreigners in the Northern part of Nigeria.

“Another issue was the recent kidnappings in the north; we were clear with our position as a group during a teleconference with reporters but we were shocked the next day when newspaper headlines added a lot of things which I never said during that interview.”

The third example, Mr. Abul Qaqa said, is the mistranslation of the video the group posted recently.

“Another example is the recent video posted on YouTube by our Imam; I challenge every Nigerian to watch that video again. There is no place our imam either said he will crush President Jonathan or issued an ultimatum to the government in Nigeria; but nearly all papers carried very wrong and mischievous headlines.”

When asked why THISDAY appeared specifically chosen for the attack, Mr. Qaqa said THISDAY’s “sins” are more grievous.

“It is not only THISDAY that has been engaged in negative media campaign, fictional stories and constantly promoting fake stories by the JTF to give an impression that they are making headway against us yet there is no time the media investigated further as an objective and responsible bystander in this war.

“But the sins of THISDAY are more,” he said.

“They once insulted the Prophet Mohammed in 2001 and we have not forgotten. They recently said our Imam executed me which is false. Here I am speaking to you, I am alive and healthy.”
Expect more media attacks

The group’s spokesman further warned of more attacks on the media.

“We have just started this new campaign against the media and we will not stop here, we will hit the media hard since they have refused to listen to our plea for them to be fair in their reportage,” he said.
Mr. Abul Qaqa also said his group would give further information on biases by the media.

“In the coming days we will give details and instances where the media have not been fair to us and why we are going to attack them as well.”
Media should be neutral

“The media in Nigeria are not a problem to us if they will do their job professionally without taking sides,” Mr. Abul Qaqa said.

“But each time we say something, it is either changed or downplayed. But when our enemy says something even without logical proof, it is blown out of proportion.”

"We have repeated asked some reporters to retract some stories or even give us the right of reply but none of these requests were given to us."

PoliticsOkonjo-iweala Fails To Win World Bank Presidency by denko(op): 6:43pm On Apr 16, 2012
As expected, American nominee Jim Yong Kim has been named the next President of the World Bank according to sources within the bank. Mr. Kim was nominated by United States President Barak Obama last month to replace Robert Zoellick, who has held the position since 2007.

Earlier in the day, Nigeria’s Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala surprisingly admitted she did not really expect to be named to the coveted position. She told journalists, “You know this thing is not really being decided on merit…It is voting with political weight and shares, and therefore the United States will get it."

Her defeatist remarks belied the tremendous energy she had put into returning to the bank as overall boss, but she tried to put a happy spin on it. “We have won a big victory,” she said. “Who gets to run the World Bank – we have shown we can contest this thing and Africa can produce people capable of running the entire architecture."

With the distraction of the World Bank presidency contest now out of the way, Mrs. Okonjo-Iweala returns to Abuja as Nigeria’s Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister for the Economy, a position where, many Nigerians feel, she needs to earn her credibility by snatching the economy from the ruling People’s Democratic Party, which is known to have ruined the entire architecture.
