BMW M42 Engine The M42 is a complete upgrade to the M40 engine. It features advancements viz *DOHC (dual overhead camshaft) *timing chain *hydraulic valve lifters *4 valves per cylinder (m40 had 2 per cylinder) *coil on plug system
|
BMW M40 Engine This engine replaced the M10 in 1988. It is a 4 cylinder engine with fuel injection, single overhead camshaft and engine displacement was still in the 1.6L to 1.8L range. Additional features are: *Engine now belt driven instead of a timing chain *same aluminum head, iron block configuration *power generation increased with the 1.6L generating 101hp and the 1.8L 111hp. *The M40 in the E30 generates more power than the ones in the E36, possibly due to emission restriction
|
BMW M10 Engine This is a 4 cylinder straight engine with relatively small displacements. An old design (from 1962 up to 1988), it was seen as a 'strong' engine by enthusiasts. Features are: *Single overhead camshaft design *Aluminium head over iron block *Uses a timing chain *carbureted using either solex, pierburg or Stromberg, depending on the displacement. Few had mechanical injection *The M3 S14 engine was based on the M10 iron block
|
The M20 Engine This is a 6 cylinder Straight engine with Bosch Motronic Injection system. The features are: *It's a Single Overhead Camshaft design *Displacement ranges from the 2.0L (identified with the single exhaust tip) to the 2.7L. The most desirable being the 2.5L variant found in the 325i. *engine has a iron block and aluminium cylinder head *engine uses a timing belt rather than a timing chain and should be replaced regularly *earlier versions used a carburetor but were quickly replaced with the fuel injected versions *the fuel management system uses an air flow meter (instead of the now common mass airflow sensor)
|
The different engines found in the BMW E30 (listed above) would be analysed below: |
BMW E30 Facts: *Second generation of the BMW 3 series *Designed by Claus Luthe and Max Reisböck *6 engine variants came stock. M10 (4 cyl), M20 (6 cyl), M40 (4 cyl), M42 (4 cyl), S14 (4 cyl in the M3) and M21 (6cyl diesel) *2.4m units were produced in total |
Hello all Appreciating the iconic 3 Series BMW E30 with production from 1982 to 1994. Pictures, videos, tips and tricks would be shared here to encourage owners and wannabes. Contributions are welcome Cheers

Zoharariel:Its not about the displacement but about its final output. That 1.6l would dust some old 4.0 |
Berry990:OP, so this is an AK47 in your own eyes? Anything wey long na AK47? |
Egein:Smh |
vertueptime:You don't deserve a response beyond this. |
Icecomrade:Your horizon is simply shorter than a football field |
Icecomrade:If you say the Honda Accord 98-02 is outdated, what will you now say about this current collections 1978 Toyota Corolla 1980 Mercedes Benz 230 1984 Mercedes Benz 190E 1988 BMW 325i 1988 Mercedes Benz 300CE 1990 Lexus LS400 1984 Volkswagen Beetle |
Having the ability to fire an Ak47 round does not mean it would have the same power as an ak47. It is a pistol with a very short barrel. Not rifled and definitely not as accurate as an ak47...by the way, the ak47 is not accurate when compared to other rifles Poor journalism and effect of half baked knowledge |
EgunMogaji:Like this? ![]() Headaches of the Benz engineer would be: Emissions Pedestrian crash safety Reliability Maintenance Handling Weight distribution Overall weight Cost...
|
EgunMogaji:Inline 12? Apart from the unnecessary long hood, another problem with that configuration would be the weight distribution problems as the extra length would tip beyond the front wheels. The SLS AMG with transmission already in the rear still has its V engine propped behind the front wheels. Handling could have been poorer if tranny was in the middle. |
clemzo101:Cheaper alternative is to park the car. All these should have been done upon first time engine was opened |
clemzo101:*Inspect oil pump strainer, clean, better still change oil pump assembly *Change main bearings, check crankshaft and measure journals for uneven wear, machine if necessary or replace *Use a better engine oil and service your car regularly |
diportivo:I was actually thinking the F15 fighter jet in question needs a complete overhaul of the missile system in order to get better metal efficiency |
OgaKazeem:Did you see a car? All I saw was a bonnet and two headlamps |
*munches pop corn* |

Exploity:Poorly written. A dilution of Davido's history with an already watered down account of known events. An attempt at summation only to result in an elongation. |
nurey:You are beating round the bush. First, you said no one races a RR (even after you unilaterally introduced the RR to this thread. Then you say another thread should be opened for luxury performance. Stick to one side of the gun and shoot |
nurey:The Maybach comes in... The RR is a BMW 7 series under that facade of luxury |
nurey:Are you saying the S600 will lose to a RR in a drag race? |
GAZZUZZ:Me too |
chyndorek:Oh ok. Now I understand you. You basically want a grille, hood and headlight swap from the w203 to tell w204. I would revert on that |
chyndorek:Hello The pictures you shared are of the W204 chassis. W203, W204, W220 etc are chassis codes while engine codes usually start with M. The engine you shared is the M111 kompressor. Knowing what exactly you want to convert and why would assist us both to move forward on this matter. Cheers |
