Hi team,

I arrived in Montreal 23 hours ago - on Turkish Airlines after stopping 8 hours in Istanbul - but spent the first 6 hours at the YUL - Montreal airport. A mix of Covid-19 protocol plus the crowd of students coming in this period made the queue too long. I can't do much reporting now as I am still jet lagged but I just wanted say thanks to everyone who has been and continue to be a part of this journey. In a few days when am well rested, I will return with fuller gist of the lessons from this trip.

NB: my phone and laptop batteries dried up while drafting this message initially some 15 hours ago. I have now been able to sort the recharging/plugging problem with the kind help of Frater.... So I add my voice to the advice that those coming next should quickly find a way to plug and charge their devices before or upon arrival.

Yes, most study permits come with work permits. But you can work for a maximum of 20hours a week. I don't know if it differs with the provinces.

You'll need your sponsor's bank statement, documents to prove ties to home country( like sponsor's assets). I'm going to find the thread where a successful UG applicant listed the documents he used. You don't need to have all though.

DETAILED TIMELINE **Warning Super long post ahead**

After arriving in Canada as a PR in Sept 2019, I remember promising my kid sister at the airport on my departure not to worry that she would join me in a year. It was my 2020 mission to secure a study permit for her. Thankfully it happened.

I applied for admissions to 3 schools in Ontario (UOttawa, Carleton, and Uwindsor), my mistake at this point was not confirming the tuition fees first before applying. Applied on Oct 7th, 2019 on OUAC to all 3 schools and paid 323.25 CAD. About 2 weeks later we got an admission letter from UOttawa, she didn't get the french Immersion program which means she would have to pay full tuition as an international student. Tuition was over 18k per term whaaaaaaaat!!!! Who's gonna pay that? Defintely not me Windsor sent admission and Tuition per term was equally high. Never heard from Carleton and didn't follow up either.

Mission two was to find a more affordable institution. Research started and landed on Memorial University. I connected with a friend schooling there and he assured me it was a good institution. I later found that the school was subsidized by their provincial govt hence the cheap tuition. About 12k per year which was fine by me. The admission requirements were IELTS, WAEC transcript, and identification docs. We sent an email stating she was a Nigerian student and the medium of instruction was English requesting to waive the English assessment requirement. We were offered two options, write the test now and get admission or push the test to your first year in school and do an English prerequisite course. We chose the former. So she registered for IELTS academic Nov 23rd, results came out 11 days later and uploaded to the MUN admissions portal. Went to WAEC office where my bro was nicely scammed 20k by touts outside the building , this was cos it was almost Christmas of 2019 and all the offices were about to be closed. We waited till 2020 and paid again to get the confirmation of results sent to MUN in January. Gained admission for B-comm a 5 yr program Feb 10th, 2020.

I wanted a University and not a college for two reasons. 1. She was a teenager, never had a post-secondary education at the time (she eventually got admitted to unilorin tho) 2. I wanted a professional course, she sole aim wasn't just to Japa. Also ensured to find a program with co-op so that she can get work experience while schooling.

She was still in that dead school (unilorin) even tho I'm an alumnae of that institution, the fact that they joined ASUU makes it dead to me. So we couldn't apply for her Visa as she needed to be home for biometrics.

Shortly after she returned home for inter-semester break we applied. The number one of frustration was getting my bank to do their freaaaaking job SMH . I wanted to pay tuition from my Nigerian bank and was to send the funds using Form A. Emailed my account officer severally, no response. I finally got in touch with a friend from the bank who told me in all honesty that form A may never work. So I had to pay the tuition from Canada. Also sent 2M to applicants bank as proof of living expenses.

We were to use two sponsors. A parent and sister.

POF documents included sponsor bank statement, fully paid proof of Tuition, applicant proof of living expenses, Sponsor biz account statement, Biz registration docs, Sponsor Money market fund statement, co-sponsor salary bank statement, co-sponsor PFA, and letter of sponsorship from both. All documents were merged for FINANCIAL DOC

Statement of purpose took almost 3 weeks to complete (2 pages). I got about 5 people to review with me via google docs **yeah, I'm extra like that** Note we never mentioned she was enrolled in a school in Naija. Please ensure you take your SOP very seriously. TBH If everything else about your application is perfect, if your SOP is crappy you may get a refusal. I wonder how people even consider submitting a visa application without SOP sef.

CLIENT INFO included - SOP, Birth cert, Int'l PP, WAEC result, applicant bank statement, IELTS results (not needed but since we had it, why not), NIN slip. All docs compressed and merged.

My number one fear was ties to Canada. In the family info, we had mentioned myself as a PR living in Canada, I was concerned about providing bank and biz docs for Nigeria whilst living in Canada. Also paid Tuition from there so my bank statement never reflected an outflow of Tuition payment. But none of that mattered I guess or maybe we got lucky. I didn't add my PR card as proof of relationship for this reason. I used my Passport instead. No further ADR was requested so I guess that was okay.

The application was submitted May 23rd and medicals done May 26th. Bio requested (next day after application was submitted) but due to lockdown could not go for Bio till Aug 25th, Biometrics was completed on profile same date.

Another wait started. I just had a strong conviction that she was gonna get approved so I encouraged online school against Sept. So we registered for the fall 2020 courses. Got AIP Aug 4th.

I requested GCMS even tho we had received AIP, I just needed assurance I guess GCMS was delivered Oct 9th (exactly a month later) No much details on the notes except "Elig Passed. Pending Biometics".

No further updates on the application whole of Sept and oct but online school was going just fine. In fact we registered for Jan 2021 winter courses without approval yet. Lo and Behold... Nov 2nd, got donotreply email... BVL . Nov 3rd got PPR. Finaallly!!! We sent passport the next day to VFS Lagos thru DHL. Included return label (which they never used, they claimed they couldn't find it)

Everything in Nigeria is somehow made to frustrate you for some reasons. Imagine how VFS Stressed us before we could get back the passport. It took over 6 weeks. Even tho we called and did several follow ups. To connect to that their useless phone line you may have to dial about 30 times. A lot of instances I had to wake up at midnight EST to connect to an agent. They didn't find the return label so we had to pay for UPS delivery which took another 3 days plus for them to confirm payment and an additional one week to send the passport after receiving payment. OMG!!! These guys have just one job and they never did it right.

We hoped she could come to Canada to do her exams due to power and internet situation in Nigeria but no thanks to VFS that never happened.

Eventually, she did the exams in Nigeria and managed all thru.

We had booked several flights and had to cancel hoping passport would come but it never did and we gave up traveling this yr. The passport was finally delivered Dec 16th . I saw how people had waited for several weeks for LOI so we took the bull by the horn and headed for Canada High commission Lagos, day after to request for LOI. Meanwhile, I had sent several emails 2 weeks even before passport came to no avail. LOI was sent same day we went to HC lagos, Dec 18th.

We booked one-way trip via Ethiopian airlines finally for Dec 21st *didn't have to cancel this time* Tho her school is in NL, she landed in Toronto. It was her first time traveling by air and also by herself. I told her to always ask questions if she ever got confused. Travel wasn't' so bad. The immigration checks was a breeze.

Docs asked the airport in Lagos were Passport, proof of tuition, admission letter. Immigration in Canada asked for Enrolment letter, Bank statement (POF), Passport and ArriveCAN code. Officer asked "your school is in NL, why are you here" she responded, "my sister lives here and has made provision for my Quarantine plans". He asked when she resumes for winter term and she responded. That was it.

I picked her up at the airport and finallyyyy, yeeeeeeyyyy I have a family in Canada Halleluyaaaaah!!!

Dreams really come true, if you want something. Go for it, fight for it. Don't give up for whatever reasons. It never occurred to me that this whole thing took over a year till now. Some people advised me to just give up and have her focus on her school in Nigeria. Others asked me to not pressure myself to bring a sibling less than one yr after my arrival and focus on settling but I just wanted a better opportunity for my sis. One I never had. The thought that I have to pay so much in tuition yearly whilst getting still getting my shiitss together in this country, freaks me out sometimes. But I know in 5-10 yrs time, (God's willing) I will look back and be glad I made that decision.

I did my biometrics on the 14th of October to complete my study permit application. After confirming my biometrics applicstion. I haven't heard from IRCC and it's slightly over 2 months aftersubmitting my application. What is happening? Isn't the processing time supposed to be 8 weeks? I need the gurus to advise me on what to do as my school is resuming on the 25th of January. Should I defer the admission? But my worry basically is why is it taking longer than expected. Thank you

Covid has had an effect on processing time.
There are October and September Applicants who haven't gotten any update until now. If you have the option of deferring, I'd advise you do so to allow you ample time for other processes.

Be careful of bonds that compel you to come back after your studies. Most permanent resident routes doesn't support such, if you have any kind of sponsorship or scholarship that requires you to return to your home country, you're automatically not eligible. This is based on information I'm not certain of, please confirm this before you tie yourself to a tree.

An employer that can't show his SOA but promises to pay tuition fee for second year won't fly at all. I will advise they pay first year tuition (since the applicant will sign a bond that he will work for them for 5 years after graduation).

I currently have a savings of 15m naira and I will be paid part of my monthly salary (100k) during my studies and will have the balance when I return. Can this suffice?

100k x 12 = 1.2M (approx 3800CAD)

When I converted the 15M it was around 48k CAD (could be less or more cause of exchange).
The POF is okay, considering flight and some extra costs will be covered too.

If you sign the agreement with your employer, it's a really beautiful home tie. But I think his refusal to show his bank statement will be a problem. The VO needs to know he can actually pay for the second year's tuition.

I'm sure the gurus in the house can shed more light.

My program costs $44,500 CAD for 2 years (MSc.) and I’m self sponsoring.

While showing proof of funds, can I submit my bank statement with a balance of tuition fees for 1 year ($24,000) and living expenses for 1 year ($10,000) or must I have the balance of living expenses for 2 years ($20,000) plus total tuition for 2 years ($45,000)?

Someone always tells me this.. "If you can show more money (that's if it's available), please do."

If you have upto 45kCAD, you can show that. They however require you to show 1 years tuition+living expenses.

Another remedy would be to convince the VO that you'll be able to pay your tuition and survive for the two years since you're self sponsoring. So showing a business that can generate income while you're in Canada, or something of that nature would help to address that.

Yes, they always review applications before sending NSE request and even their request letter always have that starting remark " This is in reference to your application for a study permit. In reviewing your application, it was noted that you may be eligible for Nigeria Student Express. To get faster processing.................."

In response to your second question,unfortunately, no one can make any dedcutions and since we are not privy to their internal workings so it is just best to do your best in your applications, respond to their request as best as you can and leave the rest to God to handle.

So Guys I didn't know a new thread has been created because I've been on transit and currently in quarantine. Although I thought it's not so necessary as some colleague here have shared their experience but I believe this could still be a guide for some of you.
My Destination was Hamilton (McMaster University)
Airline: Ethiopian Airlines
Departure: 18th of Dec. 2020
Arrival: 19th of Dec. 2020

I was living in Chevron Lekki, so I left by 6 am to avoid traffic. I used Taxify. We got to the Airport (MMIA) by 7:12 am and waited for check-in to begin by 8 am.

When check-in started at MMIA, The immigration was checking traveling bags and even those with foodstuff were giving them tips. It got to my turn they ask me to go. I didn't go with any foodstuff and they didn't check me.

At Ethiopian Airlines I was asked to present my Enrolment letter and Passport and thereafter asked to wait until it is verified, after about 20-30 minutes I was cleared and given a boarding pass (2 boarding pass-1 from Lagos to Ethiopian, 2 from Ethiopia to Dublin to refill and then en route to Toronto), a yellow paper for a declaration (this will be collected by Immigration along the line, please ask a question from official if you don't know what to do, My bags were check-in except for the one with a laptop and my documents (please fill your final destination well). Nigerian immigration was busy asking for tips...I no give them shi....but I was friendly to them sha.............. We waited until 11 am when boarding started. Please lest I forget you will pass through 8 checkings or more before you reach the boarding area so carry a little bag, maybe your laptop bag and documents. some carried big bags, anyway the choice is yours. The plane let by few minutes to 2 pm.

We got to Ethiopia by 9 pm. The flight was 5 hours and 20 mins but the arrival time is because of the time difference. We drove from the plane to the Airport Terminal and went through a long walk inside the Airport (all man for himself). Please ask questions make you no go follow those going to Dubia or Mozambique. At the boarding zone in Etiopia, we boarded just about 30 mins and flew for another 6 hours to Dublin, refilled for about 1 hour, and flew for about 6 hours to Toronto. Inside the flight, before you reach Toronto Airport, you will be given some forms to fill, please fill it inside the plane. (Abeg carry a pen with you make you no go dey beg biro).

At Toronto Airport, it was a long lonely walk because we were release in batches because of COVID-19 so you may see yourself walking alone. Please follow the signs. Fill your ArriveCAN on your phone and show your phone to them. I snapped it and show the snapped receipt (containing letters) to them. You will also be asked along the way to submit the documents you filled on the plane to immigration. At POE, the Canadian immigration that attended to me asked me for Acceptance Letter (AL) and Prove of tuition payment....I gave her my AL and my Enrolment Letter. She told me congratulation because I had a scholarship and TA (Teaching Assistantship) and encourage me to apply for PR. I collected my study permit, passport, social Insurance form, and when to pick my check-in baggage. Thereafter, the Airways Transit taxi I booked from Nigeria was waiting for me outside. The retired Canadian Taxi man that drove me was nice and we talked until I got to my quarantine residence. Since then I have been receiving free meals 3 times daily until next year with free WiFi (14 days).

I had a zoom discussion with my supervisor yesterday and by the new year, work starts. I encourage every one of you to never give up, even if not for anything but for your children. Nigeria is dying. We will try to be here whenever we can to assist, all the best all.

Lest I forget, Hamilton went into lockdown on the 21 Dec. and Toronto will be going into lockdown on the 26th of Dec. but I don't know if this affects international flight. I'm not sure I remembered everything but if you ask me I go answer.

Hello everyone, I submitted my application not long ago and I got a letter from ircc requesting for my ietls and a 6 months old account statement. Should I be worried?

No, you shouldn't be worried.
If I'm correct, the letter was about NSE and informed you about faster visa processing times(20 days as opposed to the usual 2months+).

So the bank statement should be generated via mybankstatement service. You should reach out to your bank as regards this. This statement should have a balance of at least 30k Canadian Balance.

Concerning IELTS, you need to score an average of 6.0. I'll advise you register for the Computer based version of IELTS so you can receive your results earlier.

I'm sure you also saw the part where they mentioned that your application will be processed the normal way if you do not submit the two documents after 1 month I think. If you feel you won't be able to send those documents, you can ignore the letter and your application will be processed the usual way.

May I ask when you did your biometrics?

If the ticket number was generated I think that's all you need to send (just the mybankstatement). See attached screenshots. I believe the first image is what it should look like.

Hello Everyone.

I had my Biometrics done on Tuesday, December 22 and received NSE request this morning, December 24. (I was literally shaking when I saw the donotreply email , plus I saw request letter on the portal and all my mind was medical request )

To continue with my question, I've Noticed some persons receive the NSE request later than some others. This leads to the questions I have..

1) Is there any chance IRCC looks at the applications before sending out NSE requests? The quickest NSE request I've seen here is 1 week if I'm not wrong.

2) If the answer to question 1 is YES, can any deductions be made from this quick response?

They should send it. It takes more time for some people.

They specifically asked for IELTS, so I'm not sure anything else will be accepted.

I heard if you write the computer based IELTS , you can get your results in a week or thereabout.

It's not compulsory. But when they inform you you're eligible for NSE, you're required to submit ONLY IELTS.
