Mike Adenuga: Celebrating Nigeria’s Oil Sheikh
Adenuga took the big risk when he was allocated oil blocks in 1990 by the Federal Government in a bold effort to encourage indigenous participation in oil exploration. The vogue then was for those who were privileged to receive allocations to quickly trade them off with oil majors, collect their money and sprint to Europe and America to enjoy life to the fullest, thereby defeating the noble ideals of government to keep the wealth of the nation within the nation. They were not ready for the professional gambling called exploration and production of crude oil.
They would rather leave it to the oil majors that have the finance, the expertise and technology required for this intricate business. They maintained that any local entrepreneur going into exploration was committing business suicide. Adenuga is, however, not the type to be intimidated by the fear of losing his huge deposits on investment, neither is he the type that follows trends blindly because of its short-term gains

In Germany, Obama urges joint fight against terror By DAVID ESPO and DAVID RISING, Associated Press Writers

BERLIN - Before the largest crowd of his campaign, Democratic presidential contender Barack Obama on Thursday summoned Europeans and Americans together to "defeat terror and dry up the well of extremism that supports it" as surely as they conquered communism a generation ago.

"The walls between old allies on either side of the Atlantic cannot stand," Obama said, speaking not far from where the Berlin Wall once divided the city.

"The walls between the countries with the most and those with the least cannot stand. The walls between races and tribes, natives and immigrants, Christians and Muslims and Jews cannot stand," he said.

Obama said he was speaking as a citizen, not as a president, but the evening was awash in politics. His remarks inevitably invited comparison to historic speeches in the same city by Presidents John F. Kennedy and Ronald Reagan, and he borrowed rhetoric from his own appeals to campaign audiences in the likes of Berlin, N.H., when he addressed a crowd in one of the great cities of Europe.

"People of Berlin, people of the world, this is our moment. This is our time," he said.

Obama's speech was the centerpiece of a fast-paced tour through Europe designed to reassure skeptical voters back home about his ability to lead the country and take a frayed cross-Atlantic alliance in a new direction after eight years of the Bush administration.

Republicans chafed at the media attention Obama's campaign-season trip has drawn. Presidential rival John McCain went to a German restaurant in swing-state Ohio, and said he'd like to deliver a speech in Germany, but as president not candidate.

In Die Welt, the German publication, Rep. Thaddeus McCotter, R-Mich., wrote: "No one knows which Obama will show. Will it be the ideological, left-wing Democratic primary candidate who vowed to 'end' the war rather than win it, or the Democratic nominee who dismisses the progressing coalition victory as a 'distraction'? Will it be the American populist who has told supporters in the United States that he will demand more from our allies in Europe and get it, or the liberal internationalist hell-bent on being liked in Europe's salons?"

Obama met earlier in the day with German Chancellor Angela Merkel for a discussion that ranged across the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, climate change, energy issues and more.

Knots of bystanders waited along Obama's motorcade route for him to pass. One man yelled out in English, "Yes, we can," the senator's campaign refrain, when he emerged from his car to enter his hotel.

Obama drew loud applause as he strode confidently across a large podium erected at the base of the Victory Column in Tiergarten Park in the heart of Berlin.

The crowd spilled away from the Column for blocks. Police spokesman Bernhard Schodrowski said the speech drew more than 200,000 people, more than double the estimated 75,000 Obama drew in Oregon this spring.

He drew loud applause when he talked of a world without nuclear weapons and again when he called for steps to counter climate change.

Obama mentioned Iraq, a war he has opposed from the start, only in passing. But in discussing Afghanistan, he said, "no one welcomes war. , But my country and yours have a stake in seeing that NATO's first mission beyond Europe's borders is a success."

He referred repeatedly to the Berlin airlift, launched by the Allies 60 years ago when the Russians sought to isolate the Western part of the city. If they had succeeded, he said, communism would have marched across Europe.

"Where the last war had ended, another World War could have easily begun," the presidential candidate said.

Now, he said, the enemy is different but the need for an alliance is the same as the world stares down terrorism and the extremism that supports it. "This threat is real and we cannot shrink from our responsibility to combat it," he said.

He said Europeans sometimes view America as "part of what has gone wrong in our world, rather than a force to help make it right , " And in America, "there are voices that deride and deny the importance of Europe's role in our security and our future."

He said both views miss the truth, "that Europeans today are bearing new burdens and taking more responsibility in critical parts of the world; and that just as American bases built in the last century still help to defend the security of this continent, so does our country still sacrifice greatly for freedom around the globe."

In any event, he said, there will always be differences.

"But the burdens of global citizenship continue to bind us together. A change of leadership in Washington will not lift this burden. In this new century, Americans and Europeans alike will be required to do more, not less."

Alao-akala Looted Over N1bn In 11 Months. . . .Not a big deal at all, this was expected from day1. Aloa Akala's position as a governor of Ibadan is a stolen position. And there is a legitimate reason to rub this new allegation on Ribadu's face. The last time I checked, Aloa Akala stole this position twice under the watch of Ribadu. So, I do not know why we are making big deal out of nothing. EFCC has been tracking him for the past few months now, but did not want to reveal their investigation to the public without concluding with proper evidence.
PhonesSubscribers Stranded As Celtel Network Goes Off Air by Depilot(op): 2:07pm On Jul 14, 2008

Subscribers stranded as Celtel network goes off air

Mobile phone users on Celtel Nigeria Network were cut off from communication on Saturday as the company‘s network apparently went off air. While the exact time that the network went off air was not known, many users however said that they woke up to find that the network had been off air.

The development represented the second time that the Celtel network would suffer such a major problem within the past two months. Last month, subscribers were cut off air for many hours before service was restored.

But the company only on Wednesday inaugurated its Mobile Soft Switch in Enugu, a development aimed at improving its services.

Other network operators said the development had impacted negatively on their services as they were forced to carry more traffic on the networks

According to the General Manager, Regulatory, MTN Nigeria, Mr. Wale Goodluck, the development caused “plenty congestion” on the MTN network

Network hitches had become prevalent among Nigerian operators, especially in the 2007. The development forced the industry regulator, the Nigerian Communications Commission, to force operators to stop promotional campaigns aimed at increasing subscribers.

The NCC also forced MTN and Celtel to pay compensation to their subscribers, a development that is ongoing.
PoliticsWe Have Evidence To Nail Borishade, Fani-kayode, Says Efcc. by Depilot(op): 5:54pm On Jul 08, 2008
http://odili.net/news/source/2008/jul/8/401.html
We have evidence to nail Borishade, Fani-Kayode, says EFCC.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Monday said it had enough evidence to prove that two former ministers of Aviation — Dr. Babalola Borishade and Femi Fani-Kayode — mismanaged the N19.5bn Aviation Intervention Fund.

In the same vein, the commission informed the Abuja Chief Magistrates’ Court that it was still gathering documentary and oral evidence against the two men and a former Managing Director of the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency, Mr. Roland Iyayi, who is also standing trial in connection with the disbursement of the fund.

These disclosures by the EFCC were contained in its affidavit opposing the bail applications by the accused persons.

A member of staff of the EFCC, Mr. Yusuf Musa, who deposed to the counter-affidavit, averred as follows:

That the accused and others were facing offences of criminal conspiracy, breach of official trust and misappropriation of N19.5bn belonging to the Federal Government;

That full scale investigation into the matter is still going on;

That some foreign firms are also involved in the said offences;

That all efforts are being made to reach out to all the contractors both within and outside Nigeria;

That we are fast gathering both documentary and oral evidence against the accused and others;

That the past criminal records of the accused are not yet within our knowledge;

That it will be in the interest and protection of the accused to refuse the application; and

That granting their application will frustrate successful completion of the on-going investigation and eventual trial.

Musa therefore urged Chief Magistrate Lamido Kadiri not to release them on bail because they could elope.

A Senior Detective Superintendent with the EFCC, Mr. Steve Odiase, who argued the counter-affidavit during the resumed hearing of the case on Monday, said many Nigerians were annoyed with the way the N19.5bn was squandered.

Odiase said, “We submit that we have already got enough evidence to prove our case against the accused and the accused being heavy- weights with a lot of money and influence have the undoubted capacity to escape trial and interfere with the course of justice if this application is granted.

“We further submit that refusing this application will be in the interest of the accused as the said N19.5bn in question belong to the taxpayers and the entire Nigerians and some of these people are in court now and outside. Continued detention of the accused therefore will be for their protection as their lives still remain very dear to us.”

Counsel to the accused — Mr. Mike Ozhekhome, Mr. Bankole Akomolafe and Mr. Muyiwa Akinboro — took their turn to counter the reasons given by the EFCC on why the bail applications should be rejected.

Ozhekhome, who is Fani-Kayode’s lawyer told the court that it was unconstitutional for EFCC to detain the accused while investigation had not been concluded into the allegations against them.

Akomolafe, representing Borishade, said that the Supreme Court had frowned at the practice of detaining suspects and refusing them bail when investigations had not been concluded.

Iyayi’s lawyer, Akinboro accused the anti-graft agency of abusing the process of the court by bringing frivolous charges against his client.

After the arguments by the lawyers ended around 11.15am on Monday, Chief Magistrate Lamido Kadiri, retired to his office. When he returned around 6.10am, he admitted Borishade, Fani-Kayode and Iyayi to bail under stringent conditions.

Also admitted to bail was the Head of Operations of M/S Avsatel of Vienna in Nigeria Mr. George Eider, who was also arrested and detained for alleged inflation of contracts for the tower projects in the four airports.

The two former ministers were granted bail in the sum of N50m and a surety in like sum.

The sureties must be permanent secretaries and owners of landed property in Maitama, Wuse or Asokoro districts of Abuja.

The Austrian was granted bail in the sum of N10m and a surety in like sum who must have risen to the post of a director in any government office.

The surety must also be an owner of landed property in Abuja.

However, the accused could not perfect the bail conditions as 7pm when this story was filed.

The Chief Magistrate adjourned the case to September 29.

Meanwhile, the Senate Committee on Aviation has said it will soon fix a new date for the Minister of Finance, Dr. Shamsudeen Usman, and his counterpart in the Ministry of Justice, Mr. Michael Aondoakaa, to appear before it.

Usman and Aondoakaa had twice failed to honour invitations by the committee to offer explanation on the management of the Bilateral Air Services Agreement Fund with the Central Bank of Nigeria.

The committee had wondered why the N6.5bn for the rehabilitation of four of the nation’s airports came from a commercial bank as loan and not from the BASA account.

The Chairman of the committee, Senator Anyim Udeh, told our correspondent on Monday that the committee would meet to decide when the two ministers would appear.

”We are going to decide on when they would be taken. We have to reach that decision this week,” Udeh said.

He ruled out the possibility of them testifying behind closed doors.

Adenuga’s business initiatives commended

HONOURABLE Bayo Odulana, representing Ikeja Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives has commended the business ingenuity of Dr. Mike Adenuga Jr, Chairman, Adenuga Group, for his ingenuity in business and economy. He said he was not surprised at the achievements of Glo because of the shrewdness of its chairman, Dr. Mike Adenuga Jr.

“This is one man in our generation who has a Midas touch on all that he does. This explains the success story of Glo. His achievements in telecoms and other sectors show that all hope is not lost on our country’s development,” the legislator said.

He spoke at the opening of the 41st Gloworld shop at the Murtala Mohammed Airport’s new domestic terminal. Located inside the departure hall, the one-stop centre is equipped with latest technology to meet customers’ various needs. Glo World shop is a hi-tech outlet for personalised customer interface with the system to access account profile, monitor calls, offer SIM sales and activation, value-added services including blackberry, mobile internet and roaming as well as and carry out other communication functions.

The special guest of honour on the occasion and Olu of Ikeja, Oba Rafiu Amore, said Glo had become an international brand that is projecting the country’s image abroad. Oba Amore declared that Glo was an instant success with a lot of potentials. “Glo is now Nigeria’s economic ambassador that will continue to flourish to greater heights. Glo became an instant success from inception and has sustained its pioneering role ever since,” the royal father said.

In her welcome address, the Managing Director, Glo World, Miss Shade Boye, said the latest Glo World shop would offer the same excellent quality service that Glo is generally reputed for in Nigeria’s telecoms industry where it is a clear leader.

Glo dealers who attended the occasion expressed delight with Globacom for expanding the frontiers and fortunes of their partnership with the company. They said this had made their loyalty unalloyed, as they pledged more commitment to the vision of Glo which is to become the fastest growing and best network in this part of the world.

With a subscriber base of 18 million in Nigeria currently, Glo, from all indications, remains a network of competitive reference. A fortnight ago, the company began operations in the Republic of Benin and is getting set to launch in Ghana and other West Coast nations.

At present, Glo is building a land bandwidth for corporate Nigeria through the nationwide laying of an optic fibre that will function as an information superhighway for the transmission of voice and data in an unprecedented manner.

glo is one of the highest paying company in nija and they do not only employ just nigerians, they also have employees from everywhere all around the world.
Adenuga works very hard 24/7 all year round, therefore, it is naturally expected that anyone that must work for Glo must be ready to operate along this same frequency. To those who are hardworking and full of initiatives, the sky is the limit and Adenuga is not discriminatory. He does not know tribe. You must deliver. The language is simple — value for the money you are being paid. This means you will find all tribes of the world on his payroll. This is another sign of Adenuga's greatness and this is why Glo is everywhere and will probably be everywhere because the foundation has been laid.

PoliticsRe: Glo Is Making great Things Happen In Africa by Depilot(op): 11:55pm On Jun 28, 2008
I look for Nigeria to emerge as an emerging market but I can’t find Nigeria. Other than oil, Nigeria has nothing to export to the global market. I look for an authentic Nigerian brand outside Nigeria and I can’t find one. Outside Nigeria, you look for a Nigerian brand and there is none.

So, it was one big good news for me, when I returned from a 10-day trip to Goteborg (Sweden) and London to hear that an authentic Nigerian brand called Glo is rising and ready to take on the world. I learnt it has taken over Benin Republic. And before I can blink my eyes, there is the news that Ghana has also opened it gates to Glo. Where next?

To jog our memory, we all remember Glo, how this underdog brand came in late into the Nigerian market and took the market by storm with the “per-second billing” penetrative strategy. The idea made sense to Nigerians, that if you speak for a second you must pay just for a second. The competitors said it could not be done, that you have to pay more. But Glo came in with a can-do spirit, saying:
PoliticsRe: Glo Is Making great Things Happen In Africa by Depilot(op): 11:53pm On Jun 28, 2008
The best we could do is suggest how glo could be a better organization and provide better service to their customers.
My suggestion to Glo is that if you are going to be in Ghana, be a Ghanaian. Or at best, be a Ghanaian-Nigerian, like I am. Don’t impose your ‘Nigerianness’ too much on Ghanaians. Identify with the aspirations of Ghanaians. Support them. Help them. Be loyal to them. Don’t go there initially with a profit motive. Go there with a service mentality. Serve them and in the end they would serve you.

Ghanaians are honest people. Be honest with them. Don’t over-promise and under-deliver. Customers everywhere are the same. They want good service at affordable price. They want value for money. They want excellence. Don’t go there with a short-term mentality. Go with a long-term attitude. Be on the side of the customer. Be their defender. Be their supporter.

Support what they love. Support their Black Stars. Ghanaians are crazy just like Nigerians when it comes to football. Play your game well. Don’t use rough tactics. Don’t tackle from behind, otherwise you will get a red card. And don’t cause frequent break in transmissions.

Ghanaians are like the rest of the world. They want everything first class and world class. The world is their benchmark. If you give them a world class service, then you can rule their world.

I like the slogan: Rule your world. It’s an aspirational statement to conquer the world. I want to see Glo grow to become Africa’s largest telecom company. Nigeria deserves that kind of image. We don’t want to be the Giant of Africa for nothing. I want Globacom to become a key player in the world at large. Finally, let me salute the indomitable spirit of Dr. Mike Adenuga, a man who never gives up until he gets what he wants; a man who wants the world to believe in the can-do spirit of the Nigerian man.

you could successfully promote quality and move productivity improvements/ management to a higher level in public sector only if you're dealing with people who are willing to develop the right attitude towards quality and also appreciate the true value of quality.

Yes Glo has it problems, just like shell, mtn, celtel, chevron, etc . But it is a dream company for most Nigerians.

Apart from that, it is a total Nigerian brand in the IT/Telecoms sector.  Apart from Churches,Banks we have not been a able to stamp our feet as a Nation on the Technology scene. NITEL could not do this despite their "professional HR" department.

Give it up to GLO for being bold enough to take this giant step. Nigerian professionals who have participated in the bBeninproject will tell you that, for once , outside the shores of this country you are well respected. I am sure Ghana won't be any different.

Glo is currently the only Made-in-Nigeria product we have in Nigeria to export. This is a Start-up company that has changed the face of communications in Nigeria in just 6 years - they introduced per second billing, affordable sim cards and much more - MTN were not in the least interested in these! Any other country in the world would celebrate these remarkable achievements by an indigenous player.

No douth Glo would benefit from this, but they deserve it. One is hard pressed to find any other Nigerian player of its kind in any industry internationally.

Kudos is due here and I give it with unreservedly.
