stanluiz:NATO betrayed Russia by starting the expansion process. In the 90's Russia cooperated with NATO, Russia was even pre-occupied with the rebuilding of its economy throughout the 90's so it didn't have time to engage NATO in any aggressive competition but every thing changed in 2004 when NATO absorbed the Baltic states of Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia into the alliance. 3 Likes 1 Share |

dawnomike:Well, Russia does not want Ukraine to join NATO hence the recent troop deployment to her border with Ukraine. During the annual NATO summit in Bucharest in 2008 NATO agreed it would bring Ukraine and Georgia into the alliance that year Russia invaded Georgia and stationed troops in South Ossetia and Abkhazia region to this day. That 2008 invasion derailed Georgia's NATO membership process. Russia invaded and destabilized Ukraine in 2014 because EU wanted to bring Ukraine into the fold. Ukraine lost Crimea as a result of this. Russia is poised to attack again if that country makes any formal move to join NATO. I heard Volodymyr Zelensky the president of Ukraine calling on NATO to speed up its country's membership. He does not understand that NATO itself does not want any escalation with Russia. Even Moldova a country that is auditioning for NATO membership has had the process stalled because Russia has troops stationed in Moldova's transnistria region in order to keep the country from joining NATO. After the collapse of USSR which ended the bitter cold war between communist east and capitalist west, Russia and NATO began the process of starting cordial ties the result of the friendly relations are the, North Atlantic Cooperation Council Partnership for Peace NATO-Russia Founding Act Even Boris Yeltsin hinted in 1994 that Russia would one day join NATO. Vladimir Putin echoed that in 2002, those were the good old days when Russia and NATO cooperated over so many areas in their relations. But every thing changed when NATO absorbed the Baltic states into the alliance in 2004 this really alarmed Russia and gave her the impression that NATO wanted to hijack its former allies thereby reducing Russia's sphere of influence in former Soviet republics and even contain Russia. Once you understand the politics behind it you won't blame Russia. Strategic leaders warned NATO in the 1990's not to do anything that would make Russia feel paranoid to the point of starting a new cold war with the west but NATO made that mistake in its quest for expansion. The result of that mistake is what we are seeing today. To hell with international law. In this present world order it is the Rule of Might that prevails not the Rule of Law . The west has used that might to oppress weaker nations and broke intl law in the process. Russia knows how to use it too. China is using it to achieve its goals too.
