This was why i was confused cos i thought there's more to this 'web service', i didn't know it was just an api.[if i'm wrong please correct me]

From my comments with you, it should have been very apparent that i sought to learn about this "web service" and i've never heard of it before now.
That's why i was asking you many questions.

From what i've read so far from this link i got from a comment in stackoverflow

A web service and an api are basically similar but all web services are APIs and not all APIs are web services.

I had no idea that goole for example was just a regular API(i thought there were more functionality behind this "web service" ) so that was why i asked of the difference when using goole over a normal google API.

Web service hides behinds XML and that makes it open to being consumed by dev of many languages unlike APIs that are mostly language specific. Can you use php to manipulate java ee or java to work with laravel(php)? Those are like api. They are used interchangably but are two technically different terms.

AM CURRENTLY WORKING ON WEB APP WHERE PROGRAMMERS CAN HELP OUT EACH OTHER AND THAT WILL BE WELL MODERATED. I HAVEN'T GONE FAR THAN IMPLEMENTING BASIC THINGS LIKE REGISTRATION, LOG IN, LIKES, SHARE, FOLLOW, AND SOME OTHER ESSENTIALS.

THE PROJECT IS SLOW DUE TO LACK OF LAPTOP/DESKTOP. I STARTED WITH MY ANDROID PHONE.

Well I am not so deep into web dev or programming yet. I am a bit of perfectionist and spent lot of time obsessing over performance, security, and aestethics of web apps - and it extended my learning curve. I am currently developing a web app template that uses a programmatically implemented login mechanisim. I am trying to structure it in a way that each user can have a unique combinination of privileges. Each privilege will be tied to a specific function within the business logic or controller code (MVC). After that i will think of ideas that can go into such app. It just a security templete written with combo of Java, JSP, MySQL, HTML5, CSS and possibly Javascript(Jquery). It will be my first job since I switched lane in IT career.

Please we are all here to learn, personally i dont think anyone is a perfect programmer, algorithms are just ways of thinking and since we have different ways of thinking, they are bound to be diff. solutions to the same problem, i have learnt alot from this discussion and i appreciate everyone's opinion. We learn from each other that's the most important part.

Left to me API & web service are very similar in the sense that they offer an outsider or external program the door to interact with softwares. While API is tied to the language in which a software is implemented a web service is open to any language that can manipulate XML. I still don't get the point of those whn don't agree with my definition of web service.
OP said he programs in Phyton so I thought it might be cool to explore the web service option as against the API option that forces you tn use specific language.

I meant java and not javascript. Java is a more robust and verbose OOP Language and I expect anyone who can study Java and grasp its concept up to 50% adapt to javascript far easily. Don't forget there are excellent javascript libraries like JQuery and GSAP out there that simplifies javascript tasks greatly.

I never argued with anyone. And what happens when the other site doesn't have a robust api to handle what OP wants. A suitable web service to me looks more appealing here.
I would appreciate if you could point out the meaning or definition of a web service you agree with.

Look at least 6 months of dedicated learning, when you start, go on learning until you feel tired, then stop and do something else, like sweeping the floor or just taking a strol, chat with friends, I suggest you start with HTML, it is not a programming language but they have more in common than different,, even two weeks is much for you to create a simple website, then switch over to CSS, then a month will be enough to create a simple nice responsive webpage or website, then switch over to JavaScript, which is a programming language, (don't try to memorize everything this time, it will stay in you when you begin to do projects) 3 months later you search for JavaScript projects for beginners on youtube, after completing that project save it as your portfolio, look for another project, do the same thing, by the time you complete 3 differnt projects you will really be good.
Also if you have android tablet of smartphone download sololearn JavaScript, html, Css they are all different apps from sololearn. So that even on a journey you can learn to code, anywhere any time, Download Quoda on your phone for the IDE needs, then you MUST have with you a pen and a paper or a jotter, so that you FIRST of all write down the code snipet before typing it inti the phone, tablet or computer.
You will naturally know when to make your own apps when the time comes. Plan Practice and Persistence Pays Plentifully. After doing all these then swith to Java, swift, python or any other programming language of your choice.
Google is about (if the havn't already) to replace java with Kotlin
programming language just as Apple replaces Objective C with Swift. (just to let you know).

You should also learn Photoshop or gimp for UI and UX designs

Take it easy on him. Html/css in addition to java is good 4 a start.

So according to you what is a web service? We are not here to brag & lambaste but to brainstorm & learn. Please educate us.

When you identify a particular web service for your need, go ahead and find out how it is consumed. For instance you could go to youtube or stackoverflow to learn how to manipulate a particular web service or even ask on stackoverflow in order discover one that fits your need. I am a Java person. Sounds like you need a PHP solution. Another key thing is using the right term to describe your need when searching or asking. People who deal in stuff like these are often very accurate with jargons.

Web service is service provided by another web that u can use.

A web service can be programatically manipulated thereby saving u the stress of entering you links into the search bar and comparing results manually. It is harder to implement but less stressful once implemented

Yes.
For example MMM app was a huge software presented to us as a website. Nigerians know it as web site and not as a full software that's has been designed to be accessed via the web interface or browser.

Maybe average of 30-40k a month for the average ones. Web dev is a broad term. Any software can have a web interface and Nigerians term them websites.
