Bismillaah ir Rahmaan ir Rahiim In The Name of Allaah, The Most Gracious, The Most Merciful. As salaamu alaykum, The Peace of Allaah Be Upon You. i wanted to laugh but i discover that this is a serious issue,so u guys cld lie to defend ur religion like this? His remains were found in a cave. However, you can read the story using the link I've left below. i think am done with u,i can't continue with u when u r lying."A "Gospel according to Barnabas" is mentioned in two early Christian lists of apocryphal works: the Latin Decretum Gelasianum[2] (6th century), as well as a 7th-century Greek List of the Sixty Books. These lists are independent witnesses." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gospel_of_Barnabas The book of barnabas was written by a muslim to authenticate ur prophet n ur book...how?The Gospel of Barnabas, was not written by a Muslim. This is obvious due to the fact that Muslims knew nothing of this gospel before George Sale made mention of it in the introduction to his translation of Al-Qur'an in 1734. 1. It says ur prophet is d last prophet,JESUS DIDNT SAY ANYTHING LIKE THAT. The Noble Qur'an states that Prophet Muhammad (S.A.A.W.) is The seal of the Prophets. What does that tell you? 2. It says Jesus did not die supporting d quran,JESUS DIED,even He said it Himself. Barnabas' gospel declares that It was Judas who was crucified for his villainy. 3. It says Jesus is nt d messiah, bt a messenger, suppoering d quran. It says no such thing. What it does say is that Jesus PBUH is not the Messiah that is sent to the entire world. The Bible is clear abt who Jesus is,no barnabas wrote any gospel, stop LYING.I don't have to lie about anything. Barnabas claims to be the scribe (one who writes) for the gospel bearing his name. Embrace the truth, embrace Jesus.Jesus PBUH, is a Muslim, and I embrace my Muslim brother, Jesus PBUH. Follow the Noble Qur'an. Wassalaam. DevotedOne |
Bismillaah ir Rahmaan ir Rahiim In The Name of Allaah, The Most Gracious, The Most Merciful. As salaamu alaykum, The Peace of Allaah Be Upon You. Salaam Mintayo Mintayo: may the Lord Jesus bless you too.Barnabas' gospel was written in the first century, at the time of Prophet Isa [Jesus, PBUH] being sent to the children of Israel. Strangely enough it was found in the grave with/of Barnabas. The Noble Qur'an was assembled some time in the mid to late six hundreds AD, if memory serves me correctly. Barnabas was a scribe and disciple of Prophet Isa [Jesus, PBUH]. Barnabas states that he wrote the words that flowed from the mouth of Jesus PBUH. I doubt that he would have lived at the time of Prophet Muhammad [S.A.A.W.] Wassalaam. DevotedOne |

In The Name of The One And Only God. The Peace of Allaah, Be Upon You Everyone. Salaam truthman2012. [Quran 10:94] - And if thou (Muhammad) art in doubt concerning that which We reveal unto thee, then question those who read the Scripture (that was) before thee. Verily the Truth from thy Lord hath come unto thee. So be not thou of the waverers.I say that The Gospel of Barnabas, is a clearer and more accurate depiction of the life and teachings of Prophet Isa [Jesus, PBUH]. The New Testament has been corrected by The Noble Qur'an, regarding whom the Most Holy God Is. Additionally, the so-called crucifixion has been revealed to be mere conjecture. Again, Qur'an 39:4 Had Allah wished to take to Himself a son, He could have chosen whom He pleased out of those whom He doth create: but Glory be to Him! (He is above such things.) What say ye? The Gospel of Barnabas, may not have been written by a Muslim, due to the fact that it is doubtful whether Muslims knew of this gospel before Georgr Sale, mentioned it in his introductory comments to his Qur'an translation. I'm running Ubuntu 12.4, for maybe two weeks now. It is acting very finicky all of a sudden. Stops loading, and must be restarted. Asks for password claiming p/w is wrong, after correct p/w has been inserted. I downloaded an application to watch videos; for the pass few days synaptic has been asking to DL the application again, stating a package failed to DL. The application works fine! There's more, but enough for now. I must suspect that someone is intruding. What is the best solution for this problem. |
Bismillaah. As salaamu alaykum. Apparently, there is some difference between zakat al fitr during Eid, and zakat al fitr, on one's wealth. I pray that I'm not giving too much unnecessary information here: "But if any of you is ill, or on a journey, the prescribed number (of Ramadan days) should be made up from days later. For those who cannot do this except with hardship is a ransom: the feeding of one that is indigent.... Allah intends every ease for you; He does not want to put you to difficulties...." (Quran 2:184-185). Islamic scholars have summarized the rules as follows: If someone has a chronic health condition that is not expected to resolve, one should share in charity enough to feed one person for each day of the fasting month. If someone deliberately breaks the fast, or misses a day of fasting for no legitimate reason, it is also necessary to also make up the missed day later. In the case when someone breaks the fast by engaging in sexual intercourse, one must also observe a penalty: fasting 60 continuous days, or feeding 60 poor people. http://islam.about.com/od/ramadan/f/makingup.htm Islam Q&A Fatwa 145558 - Principles of Fiqh » Jurisprudence and Islamic Rulings » Acts of Worship » Poor-due or obligatory charity » Charity at End of Ramadan. Is it permissible to give zakaat al-fitr two years in advance by analogy with the zakaah on one’s wealth? Is it permissible to give zakaat al-fitr two years in advance by analogy with giving zakaah of one’s wealth two years in advance? Praise be to Allah. The time when zakaat al-fitr becomes obligatory begins at sunset on the last day of Ramadan. The Sunnah indicates that it is permissible to give it one or two days before the day of Eid. See the answer to question no. 37636 The Hanafis are of the view that an analogy may be drawn between zakaah of one’s wealth and zakaat al-fitr, so they say that it is permissible to bring it forward. As-Sarkhasi said in al-Mabsoot, 3/110: The correct view in our opinion is that bringing it (zakaat al-fitr) forward by one or two years is permissible. End quote. However, what appears to be the case is that bringing it forward ahead of the time prescribed in sharee‘ah is not permissible. There are two significant differences between zakaat al-fitr and zakaah on one’s wealth: 1. The reason for zakaat al-fitr becoming obligatory is sunset on the last day of Ramadan, whereas the reason for zakaah on one’s wealth becoming obligatory is possession of the nisaab (minimum threshold of wealth at which zakaah becomes obligatory). Bringing something forward and doing it before the reason for it comes into effect is not permissible. Hence if a person hastens to pay zakaah on his wealth before he has possession of the nisaab, that is not acceptable. Ash-Shiraazi said in al-Muhadhdhab: It is not valid to pay it in advance before the month of Ramadan, because that is bringing it forward and doing it before the two reasons for it [i.e., fasting and sunset on the last day of Ramadan]. That is like paying zakaah on one’s wealth before one has acquired the nisaab and one full (hijri) year has passed since that date. End quote. See: Manzoomat Usool al-Fiqh wa Qawaa‘idihi by Ibn ‘Uthaymeen, p. 143 2. The purpose behind zakaat al-fitr is make the poor independent of means on the day of Eid, but this purpose is not met if zakaat al-fitr is brought forward. That is unlike zakaah on one’s wealth, the purpose of which is to make the poor independent of means in general terms and is not limited to a specific time. There is also a third way in which we may differentiate between them, which is: zakaat al-fitr is a small amount, so it does not serve a great purpose for the poor person if it is brought forward, unlike zakaah on one’s wealth. And Allah knows best. Islam Q&A |

Salaam. I'm doing a little better now, I've found what I've been looking for. Mainly, I was interested in knowing what is going on with the partitions, etcetera. I had to go through 'Dash' in alphabetical order to find most things. So, I'm more comfortable with 12.04 now. I'll save Suse 12.1 for another drive I'd purchased recently. |
Peace. I've finally installed Ubuntu 12.04, but I find it disappointing. I want my Ubuntu 9.10 back. Also, I changed the settings in the update manager, and had 12.10 installed, but it didn't work, it wouldn't even start. No grub, just a list, of things that failed to load properly. So it's back to 12.04 again. It should be up to date with 603 items downloaded. Why did it fail on 12.10? I suppose I should purchase a copy of 13.04?, and install it instead. |

Bismillaah ir Rahmaan ir Rahiim In The name of Allah, Most Compassionate, The Most Merciful. As salaamu alaykum, The peace be upon you, everyone. Syrian ‘rebels’ publicly execute Alawites in al-Raqqa Syrian ‘rebels’ publicly execute Alawites in al-Raqqa May 16, 2013 — Leave a comment On March 4, 2013, ‘rebel’ groups overran government forces in al-Raqqa city, the first provincial capital and only urban center to fall to the armed groups since the start of the Western-backed insurgency in Syria. According to the Institute for the Study of War, “al-Raqqa serves as an important test case for how the opposition will administer territory that they seize from Assad.” This footage, from a public square in al-Raqqa, shows the execution of three Alawite men in retaliation for alleged crimes by pro-regime militia in other parts of Syria. The group carrying out the executions is the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (an Al Qaeda organisation) of which the al-Nusra front is a part. Most ‘rebel’ groups in Syria declared support for Al-Nusrah on the occasion of it being declared a terrorist group by the US State Department. Viewer discretion advised – public execution (See video in initial post above) The execution of these men on the basis of their ethnic/religious identity is a war crime. Weapons smuggled into Syria by countries such as Turkey, Qatar and Saudi Arabia, reportedly under CIA supervision, inevitably make their way (either directly, by way of purchase or confiscation) to these sectarian extremists who use them to terrorise the people of Syria. This video follows on from the recently disclosed video of a Syrian ‘rebel’ commander indulging in cannibalism, a video which had been kept under wraps by Time magazine before being shown on a Syrian website, and underlines the message that western audiences need to protest their governments illegally financing and supporting the Syrian ‘rebels’ (many of whom are not actually Syrian) in their sectarian struggle. It is time to end the experiment in seeing what governance in Syria will look like under sectarian / Al Qaeda rule, to stop arming the men of violence and to put the fate of Syria back in the hands of its own people. In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Ever Merciful; The Eternal, The Righteous, The Owner Of Sovereignty, The Lord Of Majesty And Bounty, The Self-Sufficient, The Supreme, The Self-Subsisting In Whom All Subsist. The Peace Be Upon You, Everyone. Introducing the “Islamic State of Iraq and Greater Syria” Introducing the “Islamic State of Iraq and Greater Syria” In an official statement issued yesterday, the al-Qaeda-affiliated Islamic State of Iraq (ISI) officially claimed Syria’s Jabhat al-Nusra (JN) as its own product and subsidiary. The audio message from ISI’s emir, Abu Bakr al-Husayni al-Qurashi al-Baghdadi, confirmed once and for all JN’s status as an al-Qaeda offshoot established by ISI—a link JN leaders have long played down or denied. It also significantly revised jihadi nomenclature for the region. The names of “the Islamic State of Iraq” and “Jabhat al-Nusra,” decreed al-Baghdadi, are hereby void; the two groups are now combined under the joint name of “the Islamic State of Iraq and Greater Syria” (al-dawla al-islamiyya fi al-‘iraq wa-l-sham; ISIGS). Thus will the “banner” of jihad achieve further unity. A commitment to global jihad JN, according to al-Baghdadi, was from the first an “extension” and “part” of ISI. Providing little in the way of details, he explains rather matter-of-factly how ISI early on sent—“deputized”—Abu Muhammad al-Jawlani, one of ISI’s “soldiers,” to Syria along with a number of foreign colleagues to establish JN and recruit local Syrians. Al-Baghdadi justifies not proclaiming the connection between ISI and JN until now out of fear that the media would engage in harmful “distortion.” It is unclear why he finds this particular moment so different. What the announcement makes very clear is that the group once known as Jabhat al-Nusra ought to be seen as a jihadi-salafi organization distinct from its homespun salafi counterparts, such as the groups comprising the Syrian Islamic Front (SIF). While JN and the groups fighting under SIF have long campaigned together on various fronts in the Syrian civil war, and while they praise one another publicly, JN has always stood out for its secretive nature and lack of interest in adhering to the SIF command structure. In his new report on “Syria’s Salafi Insurgents,” Aron Lund persuasively makes the case that JN is unique among Syria’s salafi warriors. Its leadership is “clearly part of the global salafi-jihadi trend” and sees “Syria as a front in [a] larger war against the West and Arab secularism.” This much is clear from how JN’s announcements and other literature are routinely posted to al-Qaeda-linked jihadi forums by the forums’ administrators. It has also been clear in the organizational distance between JN and the SIF, the latter of which has become a broad coalition of like-minded salafi fighting groups. JN, Lund confirms in communication with SIF leaders, was invited to help found SIF but wanted no part in it. Al-Baghdadi’s announcement yesterday makes clear why: JN’s objective is an Islamic state that includes Syria; the goal of the more nationalist-oriented SIF is an Islamic state within Syria. An Islamic emirate foretold The ISI’s announcement that its nominal authority now encompasses, by means of JN, the territory of modern Syria might strike some as surprising. Indeed JN has largely avoided violent excesses that alienated al-Qaeda in Iraq from the local population, as several commentators have pointed out. But JN was never truly meant to be, as its full name indicated, “the salvation front for the people of Syria, by the mujahidin of Syria.” The name was deceptive, as JN’s purpose was all along to enlarge the authority of ISI. While jihadi media did not state this purpose clearly, some jihadi writers, both on the fringes and in the mainstream, have consistently emphasized JN’s distinctiveness and priority among salafi fighters in Syria, sometimes even calling for an Islamic state. In mid-March one jihadi author, an obscure Abu ‘Abd Allah Anis, explicitly called for founding an “Islamic emirate” in Syria in the jihadi magazine Majallat al-Balagh, a product of the media group Fursan al-Balagh. The author wrote (pg. 44): “We hope to witness [in Syria] in the near future an alliance of jihad powers and their establishment of a broad shura council leading to the announcement of an Islamic emirate.” He went on to talk about unifying all Islamic groups and battalions in this proposed alliance, which he saw as rightfully being led by JN. This vision of an Islamic emirate is certainly different from what al-Baghdadi announced yesterday, but it nonetheless captured the direction JN was headed. Perhaps even more foretelling of the turn JN’s leadership would take was a fatwa issued back in February by the influential Mauritanian shaykh Abu al-Mundhir al-Shinqiti. Writing in his capacity as a member the Shari‘a Council of Minbar al-Tawhid wa-l-Jihad, the website of Abu Muhammad al-Maqdisi, al-Shinqiti strongly discouraged anyone interested in fighting jihad in Syria from forming or joining any group apart from JN. While he did not denounce or disparage other salafi groups fighting in Syria, he made it clear that he viewed their existence with skepticism. The mujahidin ought to “heed the command of God (who is exalted above all) to be one community, not separate communities; to fight under one banner, not different banners; to obey one commander, not multiple commanders; and to call themselves by one name, not by separate names.” It was therefore not appropriate to form or join a jihad group that did not pledge allegiance to JN’s leader. The Islamic opposition at odds It is as yet unclear what effect al-Baghdadi’s announcement of “the Islamic State of Iraq and Greater Syria” will have on the armed Islamic opposition. Whether other salafi groups choose to distance themselves from ISIGS and its global scheme or not, it seems certain that ISIGS will henceforward more clearly emphasize its mission to achieve an Islamic state that exceeds the bounds of the Syrian nation. Importantly, this mission includes an emphatic rejection of democracy in any form. In his statement al-Baghdadi warned the people of Syria not to “exchange these years of oppression for the religion of democracy, which the people of Iraq have preceded you [in accepting],” along with others in Egypt, Tunisia, and Libya. From the emphasis he lays on it, it seems that al-Baghdadi views democracy as al-Qaeda’s greatest threat in the near future, in Syria as elsewhere. Evidently he worries that salafi groups of more nationalist bent currently fighting the regime, like the SIF, could one day disarm and form political parties along the lines of Egypt’s salafi Nur Party. The difference that al-Baghdadi implicitly posits is one between salafis who adhere to the jihadi-salafi global mission of al-Qaeda (a minority) and those disposed to accept national affiliation—and possibly even to participate in a particular nation’s democracy. It is noteworthy in this regard that the SIF leadership seems to hold a different outlook on democracy from that of JN (now ISIGS). As Lund points out, while SIF leaders have criticized the potential institutionalization of Western-style democracy in Syria, some of their statements exhibit tolerance for democratic practices such as voting and forming councils of elected officials. One informal Syrian adviser to the SIF, the prominent jihadi ideologue Abu Basir al-Tartusi, has intimated he would support the holding of elections in a post-Asad Syria. Al-Qaeda, on the other hand, along with al-Qaeda leaning ideologues like al-Shinqiti, condemns the very practices of democracy, including voting, as shirk, or polytheism. Whether or not al-Baghdadi’s announcement heralds a newfound rift in the Islamic opposition’s daily business of waging jihad, it certainly confirms the presence of an ideological rift between Syria’s salafis. Update (10 April 2013): In the above I suggested that JN’s leadership played a role in the decision to announce the new Islamic State of Iraq and Greater Syria. Apparently this was not the case. In an audio message released today JN leader Abu Muhammad al-Jawlani claimed not to have had prior knowledge of the decision to scrap the JN and ISI labels in favor of the ISIGS; in fact he only learned of the decision from the media. While clearly unhappy at the way that this news reached him, al-Jawlani nevertheless agreed to “comply with al-Baghdadi’s request.” He then affirmed (and reaffirmed) his allegiance, and that of JN’s “children and their general leadership,” to al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri. Yet it appears that al-Jawlani was not willing to comply fully with al-Baghdadi’s request, objecting to the instruction to dispense with the name Jabhat al-Nusra. He stated: “the banner of the Jabha (Front) will remain as it is with no changes.” Apparently JN’s leader is concerned that too open an association with al-Qaeda could have a negative impact on JN’s reputation and perhaps alienate opposition allies. Al-Jawlani’s chosen solution seems to be to maintain the JN franchise name that has earned so much respect on the ground (encapsulated by the popular phrase “we are all Jabhat al-Nusra”) while professing allegiance to al-Qaeda and acceding (at least nominally) to the ISIGS. The message makes it unclear exactly what JN’s and the ISIGS’s next moves will be or what the operational linkages between the two (overlapping) groups really are. Bismillaah ir Rahmaan ir Rahiim In The Name of Allah, The All Compassionate, The All Merciful. As salaamu alaykum wa rahmatullaahi wa barakaatuh; The peace be upon you, and The Mercy of Allah and HIS Blessings. This is actually a Zionist plot, to have Muslims fighting each other to exhaustion. -- DevotedOne The Shia street waiting: Syrian rebels' attacks on Shiites drag Lebanon into conflict Nadezhda Kevorkova is a war correspondent who has covered the events of the Arab Spring, military and religious conflicts around the world, and the anti-globalization movement. http://rt.com/files/opinionpost/1e/e5/00/00/kevorkova.si.jpg In order to engage Lebanese Hezbollah, the most powerful military group of the Islamic world, in the civil war Syrian rebels attack Shia sacred places and target 30, 000 Syrian Shia Muslims who live on the border with Lebanon. Hezbollah is doing everything to delay its involvement. Hezbollah is proud of the fact that it was not involved in the Lebanese Civil War in 1970-1990s and was able to bring all Lebanese parties and communities together. Hezbollah has always supported the Palestinians, had been liked by the people in Lebanon and Muslims in other countries. For 17 years, Hamas headquarters have been located in Daheih, Hezbollah controlled suburb of Beirut. This was a model for political and military cooperation between Shias and Sunnis. It’s all gone now – there is no united front, no solidarity, no joint resistance, which, according to Hezbollah, the party fought and suffered for, paying with the lives of its courageous soldiers. Now instead of this solidarity, Syrian rebels declared war on the Shias. Political nuisance Last week, there were two outrageous incidents in Lebanon. These events were supposed to prove that people in Lebanon don’t support Hezbollah. Some activists caught a Syrian refugee in Tripoli, put a sign over his neck, saying “I am Alawite Shabiha” and paraded him around town. (Shabiha is a colloquial term, it means “mobster”, the rebels use this word for the Syrian neighborhood watch units). Salem al-Rafie, a 43-year-old school teacher in Sidon, issued an edict calling for a "general mobilization among Sunnis to protect Sunni brothers." Few people responded to his call for a holy war on Shias, but they made this into a public act by forming a line in front of al-Rafie’s office, waiting to sign up for the jihad against Shias. This didn’t go any further, but the sheikh said it’s only a matter of time before this jihad against Shias begins. The first martyr of the Hojali’s family (on the banner) set a flag at this high ground, where the Israeli command post was located during the occupation (Photo by Nadezhda Kevorkova) The leader of Hezbollah Hassan Nasrallah called a “political nuisance” the fact that the Syrian opposition and the Arab Spring are being distracted from the obvious enemy of all Muslims – Israel and its supporters – and dragged into the internal strife of Sunnis against Shias, Hezbollah, Iran, etc. He says that the rage of Muslims has been subtly redirected. This “nuisance” often expresses itself in the killing of Shias. And the media that support the rebels report that they killed 10, 20, or even 40 members of the Resistance movement. Hezbollah does not comment on these reports. But people are waiting for a political reaction. For many decades, Shias were the only Muslims who had a non-governmental military organization and a training base in Southern Lebanon and in Syria. It was Hezbollah, not the regimes in Arab countries that supported the Palestinians for many years. And now they are told that they are the enemy of Islam, as opposed to its heroic vanguard. A martyr’s funeral There are eleven martyrs in the Hojali family. Ten of them died fighting against Israel, and 24-year old Haidar Ahmad Hojali was shot by a Syrian rebel. His funeral in Nabatieh, southern Lebanon, turned into a major event – for many hours tens of thousands of people marched in the procession. The Shia street is waiting for Hezbollah to decide how it will respond to the killing of Shias and their exile from Syria. In this community a family of a thousand is not considered all that large. The parents’ house is up on a hill, surrounded by fields. At noon, many people gather by the gate. The house itself is packed with close relatives. The martyr’s mother, aunts, grandmothers, and sisters are sitting in the room. Almost all of them have children in their lap. All the women are wearing black. Most of them look numb. If somebody begins to cry, the numbness goes away for a little bit, but later comes back. You have to understand how Shias view death and martyrs – it is the greatest reward you can get. Portrait of the first martyr of Hojali’s family with the leader of the resistance Hassan Nasrallah near his home (Photo by Nadezhda Kevorkova) There are posters of this family’s first martyr all over Lebanon. He was the one who raised the Resistance flag on the last high point that was won in the war against the “occupation regime,” or as they say here – the “Zionist Enemy.” And they call Hezbollah – Resistance. Up until recently, they only had that one enemy killing people. Nabatieh is all covered with black flags and martyrs’ portraits. All of them died fighting against Israel and its occupation of Lebanon and for freedom of Palestinians. Their names and faces are familiar to every resident. From their early days, children hear stories about their heroic deeds. Now, a new reality has arrived for Shi’ites: Syrian rebels proclaimed them non-Muslims, infidels and subject for repelling – they may be killed and their property may be taken away. This just does not make sense. The family invited me for the funeral - permission is needed though. The people, even in grief, remain vigilant. Everyone who sees a stranger at the ceremony asks those who accompany him or her what that person might be and who let him or her attend. The way they ask is rather polite – quietly and only by moving the lips. Only when they get the reply, they are calmed. No media people are present at the funeral. It would be interesting to see Al-Arabiya or Al-Jazeera here. They would not dare come close though, a man who obtained my permission to attend, commented. Nor are there any correspondents from the Al-Manar party TV channel affiliated to Hezbollah. Funerals are not shot or broadcast for a number of reasons: to avoid revealing Hezbollah members’ identities and to avoid showing how much the people are outraged – so as not to add fuel to the fire of the Syrian war ranging so much. The men are taking the body of the youth to his home. They are shooting into the air. A prayer is heard from loudspeakers. It is getting clear why they shoot at funerals – the shooting stops the tears that are making everything nearly unbearable. It helps one get mobilized and concentrated. The body is taken on a stretcher upstairs – first into the dead man’s room, then into the room of his mother. The man has left a widow and a child. The martyr’s body is being carried into his mother’s room and then into the room of his family (Photo by Nadezhda Kevorkova) The Hezbollah flag and the cover are removed from the body of a young man, wrapped in a white shroud, with a slight smile on his lips, a smile of a martyr all Muslims are familiar with. No sign of decomposition, although it’s rather warm and he died three days ago – the time it took to get his body taken to Nabatieh. Dozens of people pay their last respects to him. Everyone wants to see the martyr’s face and keep it in memory. Children are taken up to let them see better the martyr’s face. “Do you also want to keep his face in your memory?” the dead man’s aunt asks. When a young lady, a mother with a child or an old lady wish so, the men step aside as if following a command, which seems incredible as the whole place is crammed. The Shi’ites weep at funerals, both men and women – and not of the fear of death or sorrow the man has died so young. It is generally allowed to weep over those who passed away before you and whom you failed to protect from the bullet with your own body. A different type of tension is felt at this funeral. As we were approaching the martyr’s home, the women would be asking one and the same question “How is that possible?” while the men kept silent. “That” is the war of Syrian rebels against Shi’ites everybody knows about. Every family has relations in Shi’ite villages near the border. Many homes became shelters for refugees from Syrian villages – not only Shi’ites but also Sunnis. The news about the rebels in Syria proclaimed Shi’ites ‘non-Muslims’ and ‘enemies’ is an open secret. Humiliation, exiles, torture and beatings – all that came from Israeli occupiers – was understandable and common. Now it’s the turn of brothers-in-faith and this just does not make any sense. It’s one thing to have historical examples, theoretical discussions and even realities of Iraq where people may die in terrorist attacks during the Hajj – in mosques and streets. Now though the sectarian hate has come to Lebanon, a country that had a civil war for a quarter of the century, although without any religious motives, only political. All those who are attending the funeral are aware that the Syrian rebels have mined a Shi’a mosque where the granddaughter of Muhammad the Prophet is buried in Darayya near Damascus. The rebels have mined another mosque [Sayyidah Zaynab Mosque] near Damascus, where another granddaughter of the Prophet Muhammad, Zaynab, was buried. Grief-stricken and hardened by hardships, the men and women at Haidar Ahmad’ funeral shed no tears over the ruined architectural and cultural treasures of their mosques. They know that an act of violence on a holy ground signifies a war. What they want to know is what they are to do now that their brothers in faith have made it clear the war has begun? Is it the time to retaliate? I talked about this with dozens of people, before and after the funeral. They all have questions, and no answers. The deceased is moved to the ground floor, while visitors make their way out of the house via a narrow staircase. People gather in the street, except children. Men solemnly carry the body, they prey, and shoot a salute again. The body is placed on a hearse, and the long procession starts making its way into town. The procession grows, with many people joining in– men of all ages. Women traditionally don’t take part in the funerals. But this time they can be seen along the way, all dressed in black and silent, looking from the windows and balconies. Self-organization as statement of power The procession floods the streets of Nabatieh – this town hasn’t seen anything like it ever before. Thousands of people solemnly wait for the procession to reach the cemetery. Perfect order is maintained despite the fact that all traffic is completely stopped. The closer to the cemetery, the more noticeable is Hezbollah’s presence: both veterans and young soldiers have come, some in fatigues, some in training uniforms. Many join the procession from the mosques, and their growing presence reinforces order and gives it a focus. Not all of the town residents are involved in Hezbollah. Many parents are unaware of their sons having joined for years. But when they die, the funeral reveals the truth, as there are no secret funerals. A proper public funeral is a matter of honor for any family. Many record funerals on their phones, demonstrating considerable shooting skills capturing the scenes without disclosing the actual identity of the fighters. Women and children are watching the funeral procession from the balconies (Photo by Nadezhda Kevorkova) The martyr’s buried. The news spreads and people start leaving slowly. A funeral tells a lot about the local community. The most striking thing about it is a high level of self-organization, self-discipline and adherence to a code of behavior. Nothing is allowed to ruin the order. If anyone gets unwell, ambulances and medics are right there ready to provide medical aid, neighbors will give those in need a chair, some water, first aid – without agitation or excitement, efficiently and quickly. "This is the ambulance service with the Resistance," people tell me when they see I am surprised at the sudden appearance of equipped vans and medics. "We cannot bury our fallen heroes in secret. Everyone is given a funeral like this. Therefore when you hear mass media reports of 40 or 20 martyrs having been killed, you should know that this is a lie. A group of fighters like that will have no difficulty moving through the country and no one will be able to stop them," says one of the veterans. I heard the same from many in the Shia settlements on the border meaning that Hezbollah hasn’t engaged in the war and will not until ordered by its leader. I ask them what photos are in the public domain that are usually referred to as the proof of Hezbollah being involved in action and suffering losses – the photos of dozens of coffins covered with the Resistance flags. They do some search on their phones and ask me to confirm, “Do you mean these photos?” I say yes. “These are the photos of the remains of our soldiers captured by Israel a long time ago. They started retuning them to us many years after they took them in batches, that’s why we gave them collective funerals. In all other cases we give our fighters a family funeral,” – they explain to me. “People have set up people's committees on both sides of the border, in Lebanon and Syria – that’s to protect themselves. These committees have nothing to do with Hezbollah. Hezbollah will engage only if Hasan Nasrallah orders it to. If they leave us no choice, we’ll accept the challenge, and if there is a political decision.” The thousands of people at the funeral of the martyr somehow made me feel like they mean what they say, and they are ready for this decision.
