– Some fraudulent practices have marred the ongoing teacher’s recruitment exercise in Enugu state – The exercise is said to have been conducted poorly – Prospective teachers are said to have been asked to pay a bribe of about N150000 to get their jobs The plan by Enugu state government to recruit 2000 teachers for primary schools has taken a different shape as allegations of fraud has rocked the exercise. File photo: Teachers recruitment fraud stirs controversy in Enugu state Controversies and allegations of fraud are currently rocking the on-going teachers’ recruitment exercise in the state, ranging from poor conduct of the exercise to demand for a bribe. Daily Post reports that the recently commenced exercise which held simultaneously at the 17 local government areas of Enugu state, as well as the College of Immaculate Conception, CIC, Enugu, witnessed a turn-out of thousands of applicants. Whereas those whose names were shortlisted had their examination at the designated council areas, the CIC played host to thousands of applicants who had their names missing in the list. However, signs that all was not well with the exercise started showing early in the morning as the applicants at the CIC waited from 7 am till 4 pm before the process for the test commenced. According to one of the applicants, “the failure started from step one. You can imagine a situation where the names of the shortlisted candidates were pasted just on the eve preceding the examination. So, all the applicants staying out of Enugu were automatically shut out of the system. “Secondly, on the day of the examination, there was no sign of preparation for the exercise at all. We reported at the CIC by 7 am but at the end of the day, we managed to start the test by 5:30 p.m. “We had no seat, no where to place out paper; I just placed the answer script on my laps, even as there were thousands of us in a hall that shouldn’t take more than 200 persons.” Another applicant alleged that some persons, who were acting as cronies for the board members of the Enugu State Universal Basic Education Board, ENSUBEB, were allegedly demanding for a bribe, ranging from N130,000 to N150,000 in order to get the job. “They are asking us to pay N150,000 (one hundred and fifty thousand naira) for the teaching job. We now understand why from the onset the process was not made in such a way that the best would emerge. “If they had organized the test very well, if the process had been credible, it would have been easy to pick the best out of the several applicants. “But as it stands, they are just interested in the money they would make out of the system. You know how much they would get by collecting such money from thousands of applicants,” one of them further alleged. Another applicant lamented that “one is not even so sure that he will get the job after coughing out such sum of money at this critical time. “The Enugu State Governor, Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi should call the ENSUBEB to order. They should organize a credible test for us. We are ready to face credible process, not a make-belief exercise.” However, the Chairman of the ENSUBEB, Mr. Ikeje Asogwa, vehemently denied the allegations. He told newsmen that “There is nothing like that; nobody is collecting money. We have said it again and again that people should not fall victim. “We have also been announcing it on radio for about two weeks now that nobody should give money to anybody.” He had earlier in a media report declared that the board would make use of the employment window to ensure that only best brains were employed so as to correct the long time anomaly in the primary school system. He maintained that the board would not cut corners in the ongoing recruitment exercise, adding that the society and the state would be the greatest beneficiaries when best brains were employed to teach their pupils and children. “It is high time we join hands to reposition the primary school system in the state and this has to start with the recruitment of sound teachers to teach in our primary schools. “We cannot recruit poor brains in our schools and expect the best from our pupils and school children. “Somebody who wants to teach should be sound enough to do that. If we support the best, it will pay off in the quality of our primary school children,” he explained. https://www.naij.com/955726-controversy-job-vacancy-pay-n150000-to-get-teachers-job.html

By Omeiza Ajayi ABUJA – A former Governor of Gombe State, Sen. Danjuma Goje, has stated that the worst of the governors of his party, the All Progressives Congress APC is better than the best of the Peoples Democratic Party PDP. Goje who is the Chairman, Senate Committee on Appropriation stated this weekend in Abuja after the inauguration of the Gombe state APC Caretaker Committee. He was drawing comparison between the achievements of his state governor, Ibrahim Dankwambo of the PDP and other APC governors, saying his people would prefer the worst of the APC governors to having Dankwambo preside over the affairs of the state. He also chided the Gombe State PDP government for not considering any APC member in the state worthy for an appointive and elective position. “I want to urge the new caretaker committee members, in the presence of the party leadership and all of you that came from Gombe, to be neutral, to be objective, to be committed in trying to unite this party. I am sure whether you belong to any other group, it is better that you have a bad APC governor than not have a governor at all. “Even if APC is bad, it is better, because now that it is PDP government none of our members, no APC man has been giving appointment even as a councillor. So, it is very important that we unite and put our differences behind us, move forward to ensure that we form the next government in Gombe State,” he noted. Speaking further, he said: “It is a special day for the APC in Gombe State in particular and APC in Nigeria. We members of the APC in Gombe State are very grateful and loyal to the national leadership of our party. We want to thank you very much for your intervention. Your intervention will save the party and make it relevant in Gombe State and Nigeria. “I want to on behalf of all of us in APC in Gombe State regardless of the past, assure you that we will give maximum support and loyalty to the newly inaugurated leadership in the state. I want to use this opportunity to call on all other members of the APC in Gombe State to come and join us,” he added. Speaking earlier during the inauguration, the APC Deputy National Chairman (North), Senator Lawal Shuaibu who enumerated their Terms of Reference, said the committee is to steer the affairs of the party, leading the members of the State Working Committee, in their respective capacities as the Caretaker State Chairman, Deputy Chairman, Secretary and Legal Adviser. They are also to, “take stock of all officers of the Party to ensure they are in tandem with the outcome of the Nationwide Congresses held in 2014, except those that resigned or relieved of the offices, using the authentic list given to you by the National Secretariat. “Ensure the streamlining of all parallel offices and shutting down illegal party offices that exist at ward, local government and even at state levels and reinstall what we have in our records at the National Secretariat “Consult with all stakeholders and other opinion leaders of the Party in the State but strictly for obtaining meaningful advice for a way forward which, in the opinion of the Committee, will improve the fortunes of the Party and restore peace and unity,” he noted. Members of the inaugurated Caretaker Officers authorized to serve for a three-month renewable period are: Hon. Lawan Shetima– State Chairman; Capt. Bala Jibrin– State Deputy Chairman; Alh. Sule Yakubu– State Secretary and Barr. Joseph William– Legal Adviser. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2016/09/%e2%80%8eworst-apc-governor-better-best-pdp-governors-sen-goje/

Residents of New Haven Estate, Igbelaju, in the Iba area of Lagos State, say the gunmen, who abducted three landlords in the estate, have a list of rich landlords they are targeting for abduction. A landlord in the estate, who had fled the area, told our correspondent on Thursday that the attackers abducted a commercial motorcyclist plying the estate on Friday and forced him to give them the names of wealthy landlords in the estate. PUNCH Metro had reported on Thursday that there was tension in the estate after the gunmen, who came in military uniform, abducted three landlords. It had been reported that the gunmen attacked the estate on Saturday and Monday, abducting three landlords. A woman, identified only as Mrs. Nwoche, was reportedly abducted from her residence on Saturday, while the two others were picked on Monday at about 11am, while going to their workplaces. The matter was said to have been reported at the Ojo Police Division, which was combing the area in company with men of the Rapid Response Squad. Speaking with PUNCH Metro, the landlord, who begged that his name should not be mentioned, said he fled the estate because he was told that his name was on the list with the abductors. He said, “I cannot come to the estate. I left with my family members about two weeks ago. The abductors had come to the estate and abducted a commercial motorcyclist, Chima. They ordered him to give them a list of rich landlords in the estate, which he did. “It is that list that the kidnappers are using now. I learnt my name is included and that is why I fled the area, but I get updates everyday from my neighbours there.” Another resident, identified only as Stanley, said several houses in the area had been abandoned due to fear of the kidnappers. The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Dolapo Badmos, said investigation was ongoing into the matter. http://m.punchng.com/gunmen-list-rich-landlords-estate-residents/ |
