jason123:

My view is that we have a cabal, what is stopping them from controlling the prices?? Nigeria is dependent on oil. Will that not be too much power given to them? What is stopping them from forming a body to protect their interest (like OPEC)? I sincerely think that the law of demand and supply will not work in this sector.
Our POVs are very different. I am looking at it in terms of the masses, you are looking at it in terms of the overall economy.
I love Nigerians and I am sure you do too. We are all just looking at the best way to bring this country up to her potential. Thanks for your time.

I think using the so called presence of a cabal is at best "lame". Why did the cabal not fix the prices for phone tarrifs? One insinuation I read here on NL is that the rich guys out there are always good friends. Well that insinuation is sooooo wrong. These rich guys are constantly trying to outdo each other. Sometimes, the competition is so bad, that they are willing to take losses just for their competition to fail. No cabal is going to fix any price. They are individual businesses looking for the edge and looking for economic dominance. The laws of demand and supply will always kick in and competition will always determine the final price regime.

There are several arguments I have heard that I will like to question.
1. If GEJ's motivation is corruption, then why doesnt he just connive with the oil importers? Why go thru the long route?

2. They say Nigeria can sustain subsidy. But have you seen the Nigerian budget? Imagine we are still doing around 20 to 30 billion dollars in a country of around 200 million people? Nigerian earnings are far too small to sustain Nigeria. That is the rel truth. The president has a massive task to turn Nigeria around. Even our oil earnings is not really adequate not to talk of using it to subsidize petroleum. The US with all its development on the ground is still doing a budget of about $1.344 trillion with 350 million citizens. We need massive infrastructure. We need major major turn around in agriculture, mining, technology and human capital development. These will not come cheap.

And you obviously didnt get the questions I put forward. Please review and give me an answer.

jason123:

In an ideal society, YES. In Nigeria, no way. Knowing my country, that money will NOT be used for development. You see, Nigeria is a VERY corrupt country where common sense is turned upside-down. The question is, if the private investor hates handouts, what has that got to do with subsidy removal? As the private sector, whether the government gives you money or not, you'll still get your profits; especially when the economy is dependent on your product. What is stopping you from moving it from  N150/Litre to N500/litre?? Is its not your money? The government cannot oppose you because they (NNPC), apart from being the epitome of corruption, can't cater for the needs of Nigerians.

Secondly, what is stopping the construction of more refineries and reservoirs? Will this not create more jobs?

1. What has oil importer got to do with GEJ? After all, they are the private investors. It is their money/investment they are putting in line.

2. Agreed. How can he turn the country around? By hyper-inflation ? What happened to the building of more refineries? Create Jobs? GEJ is trying in other sectors, especially agriculture but not good enough in the oil sector, sorry.

You seemed to have missed my point a bit.

There is nothing like fringe money in society. Money is neither created nor destroyed but simply passes from one man to the other. The fuel subsidy money is not free money.
Secondly, the government cannot construct more refineries for obvious reasons. Nigeria situation has made it very difficult for government business to flourish and sustain. That why we have to privatize. Secondly, the massive financial commitment needed for these refineries is not something the government can afford right now. I just pointed out to you how grossly inadequate our budget is for 200 million people. That is why we are still talking of 18, 00 (around $120) as monthly minimum wage. But then, you cannot privatize except there is garantee that the private companies will make some profit. No one will invest money without making profit. So the kee is deragulation and allowing market forces of demand and supply to drive competition and determine prices. Government cannot build more refineries. It could have been easier 20 years ago, but now, there is too much to attend to and the population is fast increasing
Politics / Re: Subsidy To Wait For Now –okonjo-iweala by dmainboss: 12:53am On Dec 16, 2011
The real issue for me here is how we should go about the fuel subsidy problem. I am a strong advocate for the removal of fuel subsidy. Why? I am in the private sector and I hate government handouts. Secondly, I understand, from the principles of economics, that there is nothing like free money. Money used for subsidy is money that is supposed to serve other very important purposes. Thirdly, the world economies are shaking right now. Europe is on the brink. If Nigeria does not curtail some of these excesses, then we will meet real trouble ahead.

There are several arguments I have heard that I will like to question.
1. If GEJ's motivation is corruption, then why doesnt he just connive with the oil importers? Why go thru the long route?

I have no personal beef with you. Have a blessed day!

Fair enough. But please even if you must criticize, dont insult my president. If you insult a sitting president, you insult every citizen who voted him in.

If you guys actually passed your exams in school and didn't use shukuli, then you would have tried to dissect the issues and discuss intelligently. But alas, you cannot, because you went to school with free education but no books and chairs to sit on. Lets break down the issues and lets see how much you know. GEJ cannot go to his own state? You must be reading the Nation or Sahara Reporters. When Bayelsa people used pure water to pelt Sylva, who saved him from the embarrassment? You have no clue. You think Yaradua cared about anybody in ND? Amnesty is a child of GEJ with the support of Aliemasegha. It was a recommendation from a committee that was setup to look into the ND crisis. The report was ignored until the whole ND was grounded by the militants and the oil production fell to an all time low of 700, 000 barrels per day. The government was between the devil and the deep blue sea. Yaradua had no choice but to ask that it be implemented. If Yaradua was really interested, he would have implemented the report when it was initially presented. Please ask questions if you dont know. Thank you

And it did develop when OBJ was there? C'mon beaf, you and I know it has to do with the governors of the individual states. GEJ is a national leader and can't be seen as partisan to any region of the country. The main ND states that have always been on point and will remain on point is Rivers, CR, Akwa-Ibom, Delta and Edo. Bayelsa, where GEJ comes from, has not changed much.

Why are you such a confused i.diot? You asked a simple question if ND is developing now GEJ is there and you got your answer, Yes. Now you are saying it is the governors. Why do you dilly-dally so much? Cant you at least be stable for a minute? Of course you cannot because you are not arguing objectively but on a tribal platform. Your insults mean nothing really. But I am happy people like you and Gbawe and the rest are being exposed as nothing but tribal bigots who think their tribe must rule Nigeria. This is the 60s all over again. But this time, it will be different because we are fully aware now. I have never seen you criticize any of your leaders one day on NL. You twist everything they say or do into something right even when it is so glaring they have gaffed. You are nothing but slimy hypocrites. You do not care about the masses as you are simply wolves in sheep's clothing. We know you and your mask cannot hide you anymore.

It has actually really become childish now. Have you not noticed that your tribesmen are the main critics of GEJ? Have you ever applauded one thing he has done? FOI, Elections, etc? No, of course no. You cannot commend him because you are too bitter to. You cannot commend him because you are too partisan to. It is not about changing Nigeria like you claim but about your camp being in charge. It is now very obvious that those criticizing GEJ here on NL are partisan,  tribal bigots and absolute morons. You have been screaming the man should not remove subsidy, now he says, OK let me consult and see how we can go around it, then you come back to NL and scream he should remove it or he has backed down because he is clueless.

Of course I am not surprised because it is obvious those of you posting here are ACN and CPC members. You do not love Nigeria or seek its good. You are just Yoruba and (some) northern tribal bigots who are not happy GEJ is president just because he is from a minority. From your posts, it is obvious you have no clue what you are talking about but it doesn't matter really because now we know where you stand.

It is a pity though because it will come back and bite you in the behind soon. Obviously, there is nothing you can do about GEJ's presidency because he will go down in history as the best president ever and the man that changed Nigeria forever. You can keep hating till you get ulcer but it wont change a thing.

This is barbaric but I want to say that I always get amused when some guys come here and post things like "This is why the white man thinks we are backward and so on". Some of you living abroad think you are knowledgeable just because you live abroad but you know very little. Human sacrifice has been a practice for thousands of years and believe it or not, It is still being practiced all over the world, including in America and Europe. The only difference from Africa is that it is highly organized in these western nations that you can hardly trace it while it is not so sophisticated here in Africa so it is easily exposed.

Do check out the missing persons database in America and you will be amazed how many thousands of people go missing every year and are never seen again. Spirit-ism and Satan worship is practiced all over the world. It is not an African thing. It is a world thing. Modernity and scientific advancement can never and will never change it.
Politics / Re: El-rufai: PDP Is A Party Of Criminals Determined To Ruin Nigeria by dmainboss: 1:28pm On Dec 15, 2011
The last time I checked, PDP was formed in 1999. Nigeria's decay has been on for 50+ years. Anyone who really cares about Nigeria and wants change should stop talking about party and start addressing politicians one after the other. I will never take anyone serious who comes out talking about PDP. They are nothing but hypocrites trying to take advantage of the public. Most of the PDP members in Edo state have defected to ACN just because ACN is the ruling party. Does that now make them saints? It only shows there is no difference between ACN and PDP in Edo state or anywhere else. Ask anyone from Edo state who is on the ground and they will tell you one of the chief backers and sponsors of Oshiomole is the former governor, Lucky Igbinedion. That is how politics is in Nigeria. I saw Dino Melaye the other day complaining about Kogi governorship election as the ACN spokesman. This has become a circus.

Please those of us on Nairaland should stop talking PDP. PDP is not the problem of Nigeria. Nigerian politicians are the problem of Nigeria. If ACN or CPC become the ruling party today, the politicians will all shift and join that ruling party. So if you think changing the ruling party will change Nigeria's problem, you are deceiving yourself.

We must address our politicians one after the other and demand performance and accountability from them. Lets stop the partisan nonsense and attack the real problems. I feel sad for most of our so called youths who come here to comment. They are the real reason why the politicians can do what they like because they show from their posts that they are just partisan. El RUfai is a fool and a thief so he should shut his mouth and enjoy his loot.

For Alao, the rationale behind the annual routine of global ranking of universities in the world, are basically of two different dimensions to include effectiveness dimension and the efficiency dimension in performance to be considered by the rating body. The effectiveness dimension relates to the mapping between mission elements and institutional outputs while the efficiency dimension on the other hand, addresses the relationship between quantity value of inputs and quality value of outputs. According to him “ The Times Higher Education (THE), global ranking body which publishes its results annually, addresses the effectiveness vector which endows with five major components for university rankings which include: Teaching- 30 %, Research- 30 %, Citations Inf1uence of Research- 32.5 %, Industry Income Innovation- 2.5 % and International Mix- 5 %.

Alao, dismissed statistics from those who based the rating of institution on the performance quality on the basis of the quality of the “best student” in the institution saying that such assertion contains more information about the individual student than about the system and the quality of the average in our system. “For an efficient institution, the larger the quantum of resources, the higher the effectiveness likely to be, he said.

International Law competition ke. Please dont make me laugh. It is like saying they are the best because they won a debating competition. A competition is just an event that schools participate in and has no bearing whatsoever in their rating as a school. It is usually a show of individual talent not a reflection of the standard of the school. see the link I posted above. A dilapidated secondary school can still win a competition. I attended a public primary school and won competitions against well organized private schools with high standards. Didn't make my school better than those. Same goes for their students being among the best graduating students in law school. A very intelligent boy can attend a public school just because his parents couldn't afford expensive private schools and if you put him in a competition with people from very good schools, he could still come out tops. But that in itself is not a yardstick to access or rate his entire school.
