You need to read about mppt, cloud dispersion as it affects power output above max rated power. What am saying is that the readings are not very accurate....doesn't mean d CC is not working well.

There is a reason why mppt is called maximum power tracking....

I'm a bit lazy tonight...I would have shared logs from my "Chinese" Morning Star CC...check the difference in the power....it's a few watts...

Those current spikes are caused by solar glare or sometimes by partial shadowing of the panel. At those times the voltage input is momentarily greater than Vmax of the Cc (ie >150V). The controller doesn't record the short pulse of voltage which is beyond its range but it however keep record of the current which is well within it's range. That doesn't mean that that's what you're harvesting.

It's been a topic of discussion in various forums where morningstar mppt cc is discussed. You're suppose to expung those spikes to get a true picture of your system's performance.

Output cannot be greater than input Oga.....mppt or zppt or whatever! Na perpetual motion machine? The controller may be solid but the reading ain't right!

This is one of the reasons why some will advise the use of mppt controllers in solar setups...

I have seen these type of figures severally on my morning star CC although this happens before midday...because efficiency of solar panels dips with temperature...

System error

I know the average life of solar panel is 25years. Kindly provide a link that says the lifespan is dependent on loading or a link to show the % you shared. Thanks

There is a reason the manufacturer of the panel say your solar panel can last about 5-10years on 80% load and 15-25years on 20-30% load

You panels charges ur batteries so the load does not directly burden d panels but your batteries so that the maximum load you can power depends on ur inverter capacity. However with solar or inverter, u want to reduce ur load as much as possible to have good benefit from it hence d advocacy of low energy appliances.

If i am to setup a 1KW solar panel, can i use say 3kw from this setup if my inverter can handle 3kw. I am trying to understand if the panels charges the battery and supply power to your load and you a limited to max rating of your panel or it charges the battery and your load is limited to the max rating of your inverter.

Avoid Chinese inverters...they are cheap and strong inverter-wise but very poor charging which will ruin your batteries at d long run

Don't waste ur money on solar inverter. If you are satisfied with ur current inverter performance then buy only solar panels and an mppt charge controller. Connect these to ur current system and you're good. Same thing I am currently doing.

You are very pragmatic! Truth is why will someone who's inclining towards alternative energy consume 400w in d night? My load is highly reduced in the night to about 40-50w! Use rechargeable fans that consumes less. You can power ur freezer in the day and d cooling will last even for 2 days. 2*200AH batteries is enuf just invest more on the number of solar panels which is a cheaper n durable option and power most of ur loads during d day like fridge n freezers and seriously conserve energy at night when d sun is out.

1) I said 4 is OK, nd i agree if u say 6 panels dat means faster charging.
100amps charge controller is nt necessary, using a 12v inverter system, u r paralleling too much ( 4 batteries) and dat is y u re suggestin 100amps
2) you can't use 250watt panel wit a 12v inverter system because 250watt comes with 24v by default. Using a 24v inverter is perfect.
3) 4 batteries is on d high side, who ll fund all this tin you are sayin because of 400watt of load. Afterall there is solar to bk it up

I was paying 15k for PHCN monthly with 40% light and generator n fuel cost+ inconvenience. I still think its cheaper maybe more than two years like u rightly pointed out. Truth is if you must be independent, u must make the initial high investment so it requires planning. But if u're using prepaid meter then ur system may be moderate and ur bills will be drastically reduce

no it won't. Not for a reasonable off grid solution. Average bill for homes in Nigeria is 10k per month. 10*24 is 240. 240k would not give u an offgrid that replaces NEPA. Not in the times of high dollar prices. And u also have to factor in cost of maintenance which depending on the type of battery u use and usage might be yearly ever 2 years or every 4 years. We really need to lower expectations of solar. Putting it too high rises people hopes and often lead to disappointed users.

This is not absolute but depends on the type of batteries. Most batteries used for Inverter and solar systems in Nigeria are VRLA SMF (Sealed Maintenance Free) batteries. The products from Su-kam (LA SMF and Luminous AGM SMF) some product from Rita and Amaron also based on gel and AGM technologies. All the above mentioned would give u a max of 800 circles at 50% depth of discharge. I. fact the su-kam gives u less (about 400 cycles at 50% dod) a cycle in the case is recharge of your battery after a 50% discharge. In essence if u charge and discharge your battery once a day you can take your cycle time to be 1 day. There are 365 days in a year hence a very good SMF battery lasts for 2 years at moderate use. Products from Su-kam Luminous last lesser time. Maybe a year and half.

If you want to get the best cycle from a battery then the way to go is FLA batteries. This are the most rugged and ideal for deep discharging with robust cycle time. I would recommend the Tubular battaries from either Su-kam or Luminous or even Mercury Tubular is quite good. A tubular batteries can easily give u 1200 cycles even when used consistently at 80% depth of discharge we are talking 3-4 years. They are also cheaper than SMF hence easier to recoup ur investment. The catch here is they require maintenance. Requring u to top up the battery with distilled water every once in a while. Small price for the obvious advantage it brings.
Full disclosure don't work for battery company no do I sell consort or own solar Inverter company. Just an enthusiast.
