PoliticsObamacare: US Disowns Senator Who Blamed Nigerian Fraudsters by Donmams(op): 7:22am On Oct 27, 2013
The United States government yesterday dissociated itself from a comment credited to Republican Senator Ted Cruz that Nigerian fraudsters were the brains behind the failure of the Obamacare website. This was just as the senator has told LEADERSHIP Sunday that he was misquoted by journalists.

The senator who represents Texas State in the Senate was quoted as saying at the end of a Tea Party in Texas on Monday that fraudsters from Nigeria who majorly operate via electronic mails were responsible for the technical problems which he said had prevented users from registering online for Obamacare.

But reacting on the controversial issue, Mr Will Stevens, the spokesperson at the Department of State, told our correspondent that the Obama-led administration would not have anything to do with Senator Cruz’s comments which had referred to Nigerians as fraudsters.

According to the White House official, the US Senate is an independent branch of the US government, and the government would not associate itself or comment on whatever comments that had been attributed to the Republican senator.

When contacted on Friday, Senator Cruz, who, according to the deputy director of his Dallas office, Mr Michael Flusehe, had directed him to speak with our correspondent, said that he was misquoted by the journalists that carried his Monday’s comments. He said that he did not have anything personal against Nigerians or Nigeria, adding that he had always known Nigerians as people of high level of integrity.

The Republican senator said that the comments he made “jokingly” had nothing to do with Nigerians, stressing that he did not refer to Nigerians or citizens of any particular country as the fraudsters behind the problems that the Obamacare website is experiencing.

Asked if he actually thought that Nigerians were behind the problem of the Obamacare, Cruz’s aide said: “No, the senator was not referring to Nigerians as fraudsters but we know that there are e-mail scammers in Nigeria”. He noted that the senator had said he was quoted out of context.

Also, when contacted, a staff of the Republican’s office in Washington, DC, who simply introduced herself as Lauien, said that the senator’s comment was strictly his own opinion and not the unanimous comment of the party. She stressed further that the Republican Party would not involve itself with the controversial comment. She dropped the line before our correspondent could ask any further question.

In a reaction sent to our correspondent via an electronic mail, Nigeria’s ambassador to the US, Professor Adebowale Adefuye, said that Senator Cruz was not aware of the reaction of Nigerians and friends of Nigeria to the controversial statement credited to him.

Adefuye said: “Our immediate reaction at the Embassy is to assume that he was wrongly quoted and that the statement would be denied. We are however surprised that this has not happened. We have no choice than to assume that the statement was deliberately made by him. For a start, we are shocked that a high-profile senator of a country which is at the forefront in building a peaceful and stable world in which nations and peoples treat each other with mutual respect could be engaged in an act which offends the sensitivities of an important component of his constituency.

“I am sure he is sufficiently familiar with the constructive contributions which Nigerians have made to economic, social and political lives of Texas, especially in the Houston area. Every country has its own share of law breakers. To use the activities of a few as an opportunity to cast aspersions on the integrity of a country and its people is not only unfair but also excessively offensive.

“It is not the practice of any Nigerian diplomatic mission to interfere in the domestic affairs of our host countries. But we will not sit back, fold our arms while a politician assaults the integrity of our country and people in the process of appeasing the base instincts of a few misguided elements in his constituency. The least we can say is that Nigerians feel offended by him. They demand an apology.”

The deputy chief of the Nigerian Mission in Washington, DC, Ambassador B.E. Archibong, told our correspondent that the comments by Senator Cruz was unguarded, noting that the slip of tongue which his comments were regarded to be was least expected of a distinguished serving senator of the United States of America.

If you read some other posts on this thread, you would have heard the name of a very distinguished Nigerian mentioned. He alone has done a lot for the betterment of the general Nigerian populace and a lot of downtrodden Nigerians. Buhari and Muritala Ramat combined have not done a quarter of what he did while he was alive. Ofcourse I am talking of Chief Gani Fawehinmi. And there were and are more like him in the South.

PoliticsState Of Emergency : JTF Dumped 3,335 Corpses In Borno Hospital -report by Donmams(op): 12:06pm On Oct 25, 2013
A total of 3, 335 dead bodies were deposited by the military in only one hospital in Borno State in the first six months of this year, Associated Press news agency has said in a report. AP said in the report that the figure was contained in a hospital list seen by it.

The report was coming just few days after Amnesty International released a report, saying over 950 detainees have died in military detention within six months early this year.

Sunday Trust could not reach the Director of Defence Information, Brigadier Chris Olukolade, yesterday for his reaction.

In its report, AP said mortuary records from a single Nigerian hospital show the number of detainees who died in military custody more than tripled in June, the first month of a state of emergency in the troubled northeast region, shedding stark light on Nigeria’s escalating war with militants,.

Overall, the records obtained by The Associated Press for the nine months from October 5 to July 5 indicate that the military is killing thousands in its crackdown on the uprising in northeast Nigeria.

The records cover just one hospital, Sani Abacha Specialist Teaching Hospital in Maiduguri, the birthplace of Boko Haram, the movement fighting to uproot Western cultural influences from a country shared almost equally by Muslims and Christians.

In the 30 days before the state of emergency was declared on May 14, 380 bodies were delivered to the hospital by the military. In the 30 days after, the number was 1,321.

For the whole of June, the number was 1,795, making it the worst month in the records seen by the AP, which has also witnessed many of the bodies being delivered to the hospital in military ambulances, escorted by armored cars.

The figure is much larger than the estimated number of Boko Haram fighters.

Nigerian government and military officials have refused to comment, and it’s impossible to know how many of the dead had Boko Haram connections. But Nigerian law stipulates that even under a state of emergency, detainees are supposed to be brought before a magistrate within 48 hours and to have access to lawyers and family members.

A pastor said he was held at Maiduguri’s Giwa Military Barracks after he and four other people were arrested because weapons were found hidden in the shoe factory where he works.

He described hundreds of naked people crammed into a cell meant for a couple of dozen. Once a day, he said, a soldier would throw a loaf of moistened bread into the cell to be brawled over. Some died of torture, he said.

He told the AP he was freed with the intervention of a Christian group, and his jailers’ recognizing his prayers for salvation as Christian. He requested anonymity fearing military retaliation. Amnesty International reported this week that hundreds are dying in detention: some taken from the cells and shot, some dying of suffocation or starvation.

The London-based human rights group said “credible information” from a senior Nigerian army officer indicated more than 950 people have been killed in the first six months of this year. The mortuary records seen by the AP list 3,335 bodies in that period, in just one hospital.

That figure alone is about nine times greater than the 400 civilians killed in Boko Haram attacks in the same period, according to an AP count of reported incidents.

However, Boko Haram has also done much to alienate public opinion. Fighters suspected of belonging to it have gunned down dozens of schoolchildren, some as they sat at their desks writing exams, and burned alive boarding school students locked into dormitories that were set ablaze.

The name Boko Haram roughly means “Western education is forbidden.”

The group has also killed many more Muslims than Christians. In August, it gunned down 47 worshippers in a mosque. Last month it captured a muezzin, made him issue the pre-dawn summons to prayer and then killed at least seven elderly men who answered the call.

Local and international human rights groups say the troops deployed to combat Boko Haram are notorious for their excesses and have draconian powers to raid homes and detain people. They see a danger of a backlash from a poor population that feels marginalized and remote from the political center of Nigeria and its president, Goodluck Jonathan.

The religions co-exist peacefully in the rest of Nigeria although fundamentalism, fueled by poverty and marginalization, has been growing among Christians and Muslims in the north.

Just days after the emergency was declared, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry noted “deep concern over credible allegations of gross human rights violations by Nigerian security forces.” And in September, when he met Jonathan at the U.N., President Barack Obama “underscored the importance of countering terrorism via a comprehensive approach that creates economic opportunity and protects human rights,” according to a State Department official.

On Thursday Nigeria was elected to a two-year seat on the U.N. Security Council. According to presidential spokesman Reuben Abati, President Jonathan believes it is “a glowing expression of support and encouragement for Nigeria’s active participation in the promotion of peace, security and political stability in Africa and other parts of the world.”

njokusboy: The truth is dat the APC is just as clueless as the PDP.. The PDP can at least claim to have executed some project ofcourse this is seriously exaggerated but the APC don't even have a clue as to what to do if ever power is handed over to them... For the sake of equity, why can't they join the national dialogue if they mean well for dis country... The only strategy they think would get them into Aso rock is criticising every action of the federal government to the relish of gullible Nigerians, they are yet to tell us about any constructive and intelligent alternative...
After spending 15 years in power the PDP has no right to claim that the opposition has nothing to offer. If the opposition have nothing to offer, the PDP has offered nothing to Nigerians. Nigeria has 'won' the gold medal in corruption several times during the 15 year reign of the PDP. We never got this distinction even during the reign of Abacha.
