Gunmen last Monday night in Damasak, 187 kilometres from Maiduguri, the Borno state capital, carried two attacks on members of the Civilian Joint Task Force killing at least 20 of them, residents and officials said last night. A security official told AP that insurgents had crept up on six members of the group, who were sleeping, and shot them. According to the official, who pleaded not to be named, four gunmen carried out that attacks, “The attack took place in the border town of Damasak, 187 kilometres (116 miles) away from Maiduguri, the Borno state capital and birthplace of the Boko Haram ideology,” he said. “The report we got from Damasak confirmed that the six members of the vigilante group were also jewellery vendors who took time off to attend theweekly Damasak Market to sell their wares,” he said, adding that the sect members then trailed them to where they were sleeping. The deaths were confirmed by Civilian-JTF official, Abubakar Malum, who said the men ranged in age from 20 to 36-year-old. An Associated Press reporter saw the bodies were packed up in a pick-up truckyesterday at one of JTF’s headquarters in Maiduguri. The attacks came less than two days after suspected Boko Haram members killed 14 young vigilantes in neighboringBama, just 87 kilometers (54 miles) fromMaiduguri, the military official said. The attackers stormed the town disguised in military uniforms and “theyused knives instead of guns to prevent the military from hearing the gunshots,”and decapitated the young men, he said. Local grocer Masta’a Ajimi, who claimed to have escaped from Bama on Monday morning after spending the night in the bushes, said “we thought they were realsoldiers but later noticed they were Boko Haram. They were armed and theywere many, I had to escape through the bush after seeing how they were forcefully slitting people’s necks.” This new strategy was also used in an attack last week in Dumba village in Borno state. Bama’s local council chairman, Baba Shehu Gulumba, earlier told journalists that insurgents “disguised as soldiers lured the youths into a trap.” He said nine others were wounded. “They were on guard duty when the sect members dressed in military camouflage came and told them that they were needed at a meeting nearby,” he said. “When they had been lured away from their duty posts they were then attacked and killed.” http://blueprintng.com/new/2013/08/28/gunmen-kill-20-civilian-jtf-vigilantes-in-borno/ |
I wonder what the FG is complaining about. They claim they can't give ASUU 500 billion when in just one month GEJ's agents in the creek stole 300billion naira. ASUU fire on jare. These crooks in gov't cannot blackmail you. |
Where are those GEJ laptop goons? Is this part of your oga's transformation agenda? Oya oya come and defend your paymaster |
Maj. Headache:Thank you for exposing your ignorance. You don't find it at all odd that voter turnout average in the SE/SS is over 90% while for the rest of the country it's less than 50%? The average voter turnout in the US and europe is 50-60%. How come there's such a wide margin between voter turnout averages globally and that of the SE/SS? Surely you must accept that something is amiss? |
ALTRUTH: To the core northerner, the ONLY free and fair election is the one that is won by one of their own and this is the height of rubbish. GEJ can win again in 2015, let me tell you how. He will get SE/SS/MB, SW votes would be divided and GEJ will get some. He will also get minority votes in the core north. You mean he'll get 90-99% again in those regions again abi? And in your opinion you don't think that's rigging? |
The Federal Government on Thursday released the gross revenue for the monthof July, stating that the country recorded N125.78bn drop in budgeted income. While the Federal Government had projected to receive a total revenue of N623.76bn broken down into mineral revenue, N465.05bn; and non-mineral revenue, N158.71bn, for the month of July, it actually earned N497.98bn. The N497.98bn was received as follows: mineral revenue, N361.93bn; and non-mineral revenue, N136.04bn. The amount earned in July was also N365.04bn lower than the N863.026bn received in the month of June. The figures were released by the Ministerof State for Finance, Dr. Yerima Ngama, shortly after the statutory Federation Accounts Allocation Committee meeting held in Abuja on Thursday night. Ngama, who is also the Chairman of FAAC, attributed the drop to continuous theft of crude oil and leakages in petroleum products' pipelines at various terminals. The country had in recent time witnesseda sharp revenue decline as a result of the activities of pipeline vandals, which had disrupted crude oil production and lifting. Ngama said, "The gross revenue of N497.98bn received for the month was lower than the N863.02bn received in theprevious month by N365.04bn. "This was due to continuous theft of crude oil, leakages, pipeline breaks at various terminals, HP compressor failuresand repair work. "Also, the downward review of some companies' estimates and a judgement debt by the Tax Appeal Tribunal on the Education Tax reduced the Petroleum Profit Tax payable for the month." However, he said in spite of the drop in revenue, the FAAC approved that the sumof N715.84bn be shared among the three tiers of government. He said, "The distributable statutory revenue for the month is N483.48bn. The sum of N115bn, being part payment of the arrears of augmentation for the month of June 2013, was proposed for themonth. "The sum of N7.61bn refunded by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation is also distributed. In addition, the sum of N35.54bn is proposed for distribution under the Subsidy Reinvestment and Empowerment Programme. Ngama said, "The total revenue distributable for the current month, including Value Added Tax, is N715.84bn." He added that the sum of N14.50bn was transferred to the Excess Crude Account, thus bringing the new balance in the account to $5.1bn. http://mobile.punchng.com/output.php?link=http://www.punchng.com/business/business-economy/oil-theft-n125-78bn-revenue-shortfall-recorded-in-july/ |
luvinhubby: No tribe has monopoly of violence in Nigeria, we are quietly waiting for 2015.Is that a threat? |
Afam4eva: I guess what he means to say is "There will be mayhem if Jonathan wins the 2015 election". How is he and his party going to know that Jonathan rigged the election. Is Jonathan going to come out openly and say that he rigged. For these opposition parties, if they lose, the election was rigged but if they win, it's the will of the people. It IS the will of the people to see GEJ gone. Perhaps you are too busy collecting your fat cheques as one of reno omokri's laptop goons to notice. But the whole country is groaning under GEJ's corruption friendly regime. |
Second Republic lawmaker, Dr. Junaidu Mohammed, yesterday, lambasted the trio of Mohammed Abba-Gana, Ameh Ebute and Lawrence Onoja for asking the North to tarry till 2019 before angling for power shift to the region, calling them political mercenaries. Mohammed also stated there will be mayhem in Nigeria should President Goodluck Jonathan and the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, rig the 2015 election. It will be recalled that Gana, a former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, and PDP chieftain from Borno State, Ebute, a former senator in aborted third republic from Benue State and Onoja who himself was a soldier and military administrator of Plateau and Katsina states, had made solidarity comments for President Jonathan’s second term in office, asking the north to wait till 2019. Speaking withVanguardin a telephone chat,Mohammed, who is also the National Coordinator of the Coalition of Northern Politicians, Academics, Professionals and Businessmen, said Gana, Ebute and Onoja were not speaking for the north but serving their own self-interests to earn themselves a place in Jonathan’s Presidency. Calling him a political mercenary and sheer minority from the Middle North, Mohammed particularly regretted that Onoja, who had a commendable career in the military and presided over the affairs of two northern states, Plateau and Katsina, could now stoop so low to play politics of tribes and religion. He said Onoja lacked the temerity to speak for the north, having been a serial loser of elections since he debuted into politics. He said: “First of all, I have some respect for Onoja, he is a soldier and now trying to be a politician. But I think it’s an insult for people with similar background, opportunity, soldiers who play like mercenaries, as a former Governor of Plateau and Katsina states, who are now rediscovering politics like a business and who can pose or could claim to speak for any part of the country”. “It is on record that Onaja has contested elections in the past, including the last election we had in 2011 and he lost. In fact, he lost to Senator David Mark, the President of the Senate. So, if Onaja and his likes were to claim to speak for the whole Middle Belt, that in my view is questionable, uncharitable and utter shamelessness. “For one, even in Benue, the tribes he comes from, the Idomas are minority. The majorityethnic group in Benue is the Tivs who are about 55 percent of the population of Benue State and within the remaining 45 percent, his own tribe constitutes less than 20 percent. “Even within that, the Idomas are a constellation of so many tribal groups. There are about seven or eight identified tribal groups of the Idomas. So for a man with that background both personally and a group background to claim to speak for the Middle Belt is sheer nonsense. “What he was referring to, I don’t even havethe courage to say it, is the claim by some ofthe politically ambitious and opportunistic people in the Middle Belt who claim that every northern minority is automatically a Middle Belter. “They include people from Kebbi, Adamawa and Yobe states, including Borno. So, in effect, what they are saying is that any northerner who is a Christian must be a member of the Middle Belt Forum. And that issheer nonsense. “They claim that anybody who is so, so, and so, automatically is so, so, and so, is sheer nonsense. The ACF who is Arewa Consultative Forum claims that every Northerner is automatically a member of ACF. “If that were to be the case, then, there is nobody who is a member of ACF. If everybody is a member of any group, then nobody is a member of that group. The most valued claim in being a member, it must be done openly. People must go and identify themselves in the group rather thanstay on the sideline and talk rubbish.” Mohammed also took swipe at Gana and Ebute, saying they, like Onoja, displayed religious chauvinism through his recent statement, were all seeking various appointments in Jonathan’s government. According to Mohammed, the fact that the northern elites hailed from the zone by ‘accident of geography does not make them mouthpiece of the zone. He stressed that they were doing their “dirty jobs in the Jonathan’s presidency’. He said: “The fact of the matter is that they are northerners by accident of geography but define their economic interests now, that has been served by identifying and doing their dirty job in the Jonathan Presidency.” With a voice laced with seriousness, the former lawmaker said there would be mayhem in the country should Jonathan rig his way through in 2015. ”Let me say this, if without the consent of the law, they rig the election the way they rigged 2011 election, there will be mayhem in Nigeria. “The only way he can be President against the law explicitly is to connive with the wayhe did with Jega’s INEC to rig the election andthat has been the pattern since 1999 when Obasanjo came. It hasn’t changed. “The only way PDP will win election anywhere is by rigging the election. If they do that in 2015, there will be mayhem in Nigeria,” he warned.. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2013/08/there-ll-be-mayhem-if-jonathan-rigs-2015-polls-junaid-mohammed/?utm_source=&utm_medium=twitter |
You think losing a $10 bill is bad? Trying losing $33billion, and with ityour ranking among the world's richest men.
That’s what’s happened to Brazilian oil tycoon Eike Batista, who last year was quite literally on top of theworld. Life was good, he was eighthrichest man on the planet, and once he even vowed to overtake Mexico’s Carlos Slim as the planet's richest man. It didn't last, and Batista has since watched his $34 billion net worth plummet some $33 billionover 16 months or so, according to Bloomberg. The big problem? His oil conglomerate, OGX Petroleo & Gas Participacoes SA, lost 90 percent of its value over the last year, leaving Batista with a relatively paltry $200 million when including debtshe owes to investors. Batista, known for his charismatic persona and opulent lifestyle, simply may have been overly optimistic at a time when his country was experiencing strong economic growth. (Brazil’s economyhas since fallen on harder times.) Sergio Lazzarini, of the INSPER Business School in Sao Paulo, told BBC News that Batista's business model “was exaggerated in every sense.” Batista’s optimism nevertheless appears undiminished, even in the face of debts to OGX investors such as General Electric, IBM and Abu Dhabi’s state investment fund Mubadala, The Wall Street Journal reports. “I will honor all of my obligations,” Batista wrote in a Valor Economico newspaper op-ed last weekwhere he admitted regretting taking his companies public. “I won’t leave a single penny unpaid for each one of my debts.” At such a vast sum, Batista’s losses stand as the greatest decline in personal net worth since March 2012, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires index. Other billionaires who've had hard landings in recent years include Ikea founder Ingvar Kamprad, who lost $17 billionin 2010, as well as Sean Quinn, once known as Ireland’s richest man, who declared bankruptcy in 2011 after being worth $6 billionjust 3 years earlier, according to Forbes. http://m.huffpost.com/us/entry/3659328 |
The world's richest man, Bill Gates, can do aheck of a whole lot with his $72 billion worth. 1.The Richest Man In the World Gates was in No. 1 position on theForbeslist from 1995 to 2007 and again in 2009. On May 16Bloombergannounced that Bill Gates was back on top with an estimated net worth of $72.7 billion. 2.He is One Of the Richest Countries In the World, Too If Bill Gates were a country, he would be the 37th richest country on earth. 3.He Knew He'd Be Filthy Rich In school he bragged to his teachers that he would be a millionaire by the time he was 30; he was a billionaire by 31. 4.It's Literally Not Worth His Time toPick Up a Dropped $100 Bill From theGround With a worth of $72 billion, a 6% rate of return would earn Gates roughly $114.16 per second he is alive, making it a poor investment for Bill Gates to bother picking up a $100 bill if he dropped it. 5.He's a Big Spender Bill Gates has donated more than $26 billion dollars to philanthropic causes through the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. That includes $10 billion for vaccine research over the next ten years. 6.His First Big Sale Bill Gates’ first computer program sale was at 17 for $4,200. He sold a time-tabling system to his high school. Not too bad for astart. 7.What It Would Take For Him to Lose Everything Bill Gates is 57 this year. If we assume that he will live for another 33 years, he has to spend $6 million per day to use up all of his wealth. 8.He Can Give Everyone On Earth $10and Still Be Loaded If he gave everyone on Earth $10 this Christmas, he’d still have $2.26 billion left. 9.His Kids Aren't Loaded Gates is only going to give a minuscule amount to his kids. “I don’t think that amount of money would be good for them. They have to find their own way. They will be given an unbelievable education and that will all be paid for. And certainly anything related to health issues we will take care of. But in terms of their income, they will have to pick a job they like and goto work,” Gates said. 10.Frozen Assets If Microsoft Windows’ users could claim $1 for every time their Microsoft Windows freezes, Bill Gates would be bankrupt in about three days! http://www.policymic.com/mobile/articles/45397/10-ridiculous-facts-about-how-rich-bill-gates-is |
The All Progressives Congress (APC) has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to quickly sanction those violating its order on the ban on campaigns for the 2015 general elections.
Specifically, the APC has called on the INEC to sanction the First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan, if it wanted its order on the campaign ban to be taken seriously. The party was speaking in view of the peace rally organised by Mrs Jonathan on Thursday in Abuja which paralysed activities in the city for about four hours, describing the rally as a subtle electioneering campaign for the president ahead of the general elections. The APC, in a statement issued by its interim National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, also urged the Presidency to tell Nigerians why it defied INEC rules by continuing to campaign for the 2015 elections. The statement said: “While one of the PDP gong-bearers, Okupe, was telling Nigerians that President Jonathan has not informed anyone that he will contestin 2015, his wife was coercing hundreds of hapless women, including those in uniform, into a show of shame tagged a ‘Peace Rally’, but in essence a campaign for President Jonathan ahead of 2015. “Defying INEC, this brazen campaign featured women clad in specially-made ‘ankara’ that bore the picture of President Jonathan and reminds one of the disgraceful days of the late despot Mobutu Sese Seko of former Zaire, and the late clownish leader of Uganda, Idi Amin. What a company to keep in the 21st century! ‘”In what must ranked as the first of its kind in Nigeria, women drawn from various security agencies – the same that will be expected to provide securityfor the 2015 elections – were coerced into a march of shame, as organisers of the campaign masquerading as a peace rally blocked traffic and prevented citizens from earning their daily bread. “Yet, Okupe said his boss has not told anyone he will run, and had the temerityto insult the media by saying they have been taken over by a few people. The good news is that Nigerians are far smarter than their present rulers and therefore cannot be fooled.” The statement said that the APC was on a rescue mission to save Nigeria from the clutches of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and a mediocre presidency, both of which, it claimed, have failed thecitizenry and dimmed their hopes. The APC further said that its cardinal programmes, intended to rescue the long-suffering citizens and the nation were premised on “war against corruption, food security, accelerated power supply, integrated transport network, free education, devolution of power, accelerated economic growth and affordable health care.” http://blueprintng.com/new/2013/08/19/punish-patience-apc-tells-inec/ |
The North-east deputy coordinator for the All Progressive Congress (APC) Alhaji Umar Duhu, has said that Nigeria will cease to exist if President Goodluck Jonathan is re-elected in 2015. Duhu, who stated this during an interview with our correspondent, notedthat the Jonathan-led administration has not only impoverished Nigerians more than any other in recent time, but driving the country into extinction. He said: “President Jonathan is incapableof leading a country like Nigeria. What Nigerians want is a national leader and not a regional leader who contracted thecountry’s oil pipeline, the most sensitive part of the economy to terrorists.” He said the APC was compiling the ills of the Jonathan’s government to show to Nigerians why it should not be returned to power, adding that the administration’s mid-term report was a theoretical document that has no concrete prove on ground. Duhu said: Look at the colossal amount of money spent in the power sector alone. Yet Nigerians cannot boast of a steady power supply.” Meanwhile, Duhu said that contrary to insinuations that there was a major disagreement between General Muhammadu Buhari and former governor of Lagos State, Bola Tinubu, all is fine between the two leaders of the APC. He said the APC was poised to ensure that at the end of the day internal democracy in the strictest of senses would ensure that the peoples choice emerges, adding that even where it is a consensus candidate, the party will ensure a ‘yes’ or ‘no’ vote. http://blueprintng.com/new/2013/08/19/2015-nigeria-will-cease-to-exist-if-jonathan-returns/ |
Despite these inadequacies of the christian belief, i wonder why most christians refuse to accept criticism of their faith's inadequacies by other religions. Perhaps it will serve christians well to dig deeper into the message of islam. Christians should not fall into the stereotype that has been built by the West that Islam is a religion of terror. I invite christians to dig deep and they shall surely emancipate themselves from the slave masters called pastors and church leaders. |
Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has vowed that he will quit the club if he fails to bring trophies to Stamford Bridge. The Portuguese won the Premier League twice in his first stint as Blues boss and has now returned to west London for a second spell. However, he has now promised that he will stand aside if he suffers a repeat of the trophyless season he endured at Real Madrid last term. "Of course, it is about winning trophies. My DNA didn't change, my nature didn't change," he told reporters. "I am not the kind of person to be at the same club for three or four years without winning a trophy. "In this case, I don't need the club to say 'we are not happy with you, goodbye'. I will be the first one to say 'I gave everything I could but I didn't succeed, so let's both go and try a different thing'." The Blues kick off their Premier League season on Sunday against Hull City and Mourinho is hopeful of the match marking the beginning a long-term stay at Stamford Bridge. "My feeling is the trophies will arrive naturally without obsession, they will arrive naturally, based on the stability because there is big empathy between the different sectors at this club," he added. "Chelsea need some stability. In this moment, the club is ready for that and I am ready for that. "When I came the first time, I still had the passion of going around and trying to win other championships and trying to make myself better by going to other football countries but now, I don't see myself in Spain coaching another club and I don't see myself coaching another club in Italy other than Inter. "I don't see myself in other leagues because I have a connection with Chelsea. I have quite a long contract here and I hope at the end of it we both want to keep together." |

Former Chief Security Officer to late former Head of State General Sani Abacha, Major Hamza Al-Mustapha, yesterday said that he was not surprised by the decision of the Lagos state government to proceed to the Supreme Court to challenge the judgement that set him free in the murder of Alhaja Kudirat Abiola. Al-Mustapha told Blueprint in an exclusive telephone interview that the Lagos state government had not erred in anyway by heading for the apex court. He said: “By heading for the Supreme Court, the Lagos state government is just exercising its constitutional right to justice. I don’t think they have done something strange. After all, when the Lagos High Court sentenced me and I was not satisfied I also exercised that right by going to the Court of Appeal, which gave me freedom. “This right to appeal forms the basis of a society that is governed by the rule of law and that is what our country is.” On his expectations at the apex court Al-Mustapha said he was confident that justice would be done and that he would have the last laugh. He placed his confidence on his faith in the country’s judiciary. http://blueprintng.com/new/2013/08/16/i-wasnt-surprised-by-lagos-govts-appeal-says-al-mustapha/ |
Quite unfortunate that the youths whose future is being thrown to the dogs by the GEJ administration can't see nothing wrong with their plight. Let's wait for 2015. |
A professor of management, David Iornem, yesterday described the nation’s university admission crisis as “atime bomb” and a disaster worse than the Boko Haram killings. He told journalists in Kaduna that there was urgent need for the Federal Ministryof Education and the National UniversityCommission (NUC) to come up with practical solutions to the problem by considering university colleges in the country. According to him, the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) is not designed to set qualification criteria for university admission, but to edge out candidates due to lack of capacity of Nigerian universities to accommodate the youth aspiring for tertiary education. He said: “Out of 1.7 million students that want to enter university, only 500,000 found places, 1.2 million young Nigeriansare out. What is their fate and future? This is a bigger crisis than Boko Haram crisis. To take 1.2 million young Nigerians who want to continue with their education and put them by the corner because society cannot cater for them.” |
Former Minister of Petroleum, Professor Tam David-West, yesterday declared that only a vagabond government would fail to invest in education, adding,“There are more thieves in government than saints in the country.” David-West said this in Ibadan while speaking at a town hall meeting organised by the University of Ibadan chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU). He said: “Any government that fails to invest in education is a vagabond government. The problem with Nigeria is that we have more thieves than saints in government. We drill over two million barrels of crude oil per day. Why should we be poor? ASUU is saying put money in education to improve education quality for our children and those yet unborn.” He maintained that if the federal government was serious, there was nothing stopping it from adequately funding the nation’s education sector, noting that a government that said it spent N8 trillion illegally must be made by all Nigerians to fund public education. According to him, no serious government would turn its back on proper funding of education, adding thatany government that “fails to invest in education is a vagabond government.” He said it was unfortunate that the same government that “does not have money for education budgeted N1 billioneach to feed the president and vice-president for a year.” David-West asked rhetorically: “Are they eating rock in Aso Rock? If you went to school without shoes, ensure that your children have shoes. Good parents pray that their children must be better than they were.” Also speaking at the event, the Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress(NLC) in Oyo state, Dr Bashir Olarenwaju, in his remarks, lamented that the nation’s leaders “don’t have the interestof the masses at heart.” “Those who are in government do not have our time. They do not have regards for Nigerians,” he said. The chairman alleged that it was glaring that the federal government “is insincere with the nation’s education sector.” He said a Minister of Education ought to have resigned if a ministry under which he or she works is comatose. Olanrewaju said: “Nothing is working in Nigeria. Nigeria will be doomed if education is not sound enough. How many of them have children in public education? Their stolen money is being used to send their children abroad in order for them to return to rule over our children. “How will our products be good if we do not have quality infrastructure to work with? We are fighting for the system, future of the country, so that our children will not be turned to slaves.” Also speaking, chairman of ASUU, University of Ibadan chapter, Dr Segun Ajiboye, said the town hall meeting was part of efforts being made by the union to meet with the masses and enlighten them about the on-going strike. http://blueprintng.com/new/2013/08/16/only-vagabonds-abandon-education-says-david-west/ |
magkhan: Op...are you saying that building an auditorium for the glory of God is not a worthy cause?Stupid argument. So he did not ask anyone to steal. Granted. He only subtly encouraged it. Daddy GO needs 10 persons to contribute 10 billion naira. Did you bother to ask who those billionaires are? It is only in Nigeria people donate billions while they don't own a single stall in the market. It is only in Nigeria where civil servants are billionaires. It is only in Nigeria where we have 'silent billionaires': people who nobody knows their source of stupendous wealth. Most unfortunate, some people come to NairaLand to justify criminality of the highest order. This Daddy GO and his silent billionaires will all have their day in jail. Time is coming. |

A 22-year-old man angry with a woman he dated posted photos of her 2-month-old daughter in a Craigslist ad and tried to sell the baby for $100, prosecutors said Monday. Paul Marquez posted an ad entitled"baby for sale,"prosecutors said. Marquez's posting acted as if he were the parent, said the baby loved to play and have fun, but had asthma and was"really getting on my nerves." "I don't want her Please email me,"it read, authorities said. Marquez was charged Thursday by Staten Island prosecutors with endangering the welfare of a child, harassment and a social service violation of authority to place or board out children. He was being held in lieu of $1,000 bail. A call to his attorney wasn't returned. According to the criminal complaint, Marquez, who works as a stockperson at a Victoria's Secret, admitted he posted the listing just to get back at the woman. The two met online and had been out a few times, but he apparently was angry because she wouldn't pay him enough attention, authorities said. He gave out the woman's number"and offered her daughter for sale,"according to the criminal complaint. There was no indication he actually meant to sell the infant. The mother called police after she received a phone call from a person offering to buy the baby, according to a criminal complaint. Staten Island investigators are looking into the request—it may have been out of concern and not an illegal attempt to purchase a child. The posting was located in the Staten Island section of Craigslist under baby and kid stuff, for sale by owner. It was flagged and taken down at least once, but Marquez reposted it, authorities said. Marquez faces up to a year behind bars if convicted. http://m.usatoday.com/article/news/2620477 |

She says: “It was only natural for him to be there, it would have felt strange if he wasn’t. He was like a part of me. By giving away a heart I gained a second family.” The pair became close friends after Allison underwent a heart and lung transplant in 1997 and David received the organ. Their families met by chance as both recovered at the same hospital. And while Allison has no idea who donated her heart and lungs – though she sent an anonymous letter to thank the family – she discovered the identity of her liver donor after being given a special recognition award at the Daily Mirror’s Pride of Britain Awards in 2010. Following her TV appearance she received aFacebook message from the mother of a little girl who had donated her liver, who put her age and the date of the operation together to identify her. “It was really touching,” says Allison. “I think it helped her to know she had done the right thing and I had put the liver to good use.” Her experiences have led to Allison becoming one of the leading campaigners for organ donation and she played a crucial role in launching an “opt out” donor registerin Wales this month. It aims to tackle the shortage of donors andcut waiting times by adding everyone to the register unless they specifically withdraw their consent. But while Allison is delighted by the register, she is furious at the damage NHS chiefs believe has been done by a recent episode of Holby City. Five million viewers watched surgeons continue with a transplant after the deceased donor’s mum withdrew consent – something that would never happen. Other errors saw the bereaved mother watch the operation and confront the mother of the recipient. Bosses at NHS Blood and Transplant wrote to the BBC to complain and warned that the scenes had scared people into dropping off the donor register. Allison says: “It makes your blood boil, to behonest. It’s so far removed from the truth. It’s very irresponsible to go against the advice of a nurse and run this sensational story to attract more viewers. “I don’t think they have realised the damage they’ve done, wiping out so much hard work we have put in over the years. It could cost lives.” The reality of Allison’s own transplant was afar cry from the depiction on television. As she and David recovered from surgery atthe small but pioneering Papworth Hospital in Cambridge, they were the only hearttransplant patients on the wards and their families began chatting in the hospital canteen. Allison, 35, says: “I had a cuddly rabbit that was my mascot through the whole thing. I think David’s family saw my mum holding him and put two and two together.” The pair spent seven weeks in hospital and towards the end of their recovery period were allowed out for a few hours at a time. So one afternoon the families went for a meal together. Allison recalls: “David took me to one side and asked if I knew where my heart had gone. I said yes, I knew he had it. “Then he broke down in tears. He was so grateful. “From that point on there was a very special bond between us. They lived in Kent and we lived in Wales but we were always on the phone and they would send presentsat Christmas.” Thanks to his new heart David enjoyed an extra 14 years of life. He even survived twoheart attacks that might have killed someone with their original, older heart. However, the strain weakened the organ and David died at the age of 74 in 2011, justmonths after watching Allison tie the knot. As a former Royal Engineer he was given a full military funeral, complete with the Last Post. Allison admits: “It wasn’t until I went to the funeral that I realised how emotional it would be. It was like saying goodbye to part of myself. It was extremely hard.” After a childhood spent battling cystic fibrosis, Allison badly needed a liver transplant when she left school. Yet she spent 16 months waiting for an organ, every day hoping her hospital pager would bleep. She says: “It was living hell, my whole life was put on hold.” On one occasion the family were packed and ready to leave for the hospital when they received a second call. Allison says: “There was a girl who’d had complications with her transplant and needed another liver immediately to live. “I told them to give it to her. It was a huge anticlimax. Nobody really said much for a while after that. We were shell-shocked.” Allison eventually had her transplant in 1995, aged 17. By that time doctors feared she had as little as three days to live. But complications left her on a ventilator and she quickly found herself back on the waiting list needing a lung transplant while doctors advised replacing her heart as well to make the operation easier. Time was running out, however. “I couldn’t even walk to the bathroom,” she says. “Towards the end I was on oxygen, but my nails and lips were blue.” This time Allison only had to wait six weeks before the transplant in 1997 – however the drugs she was given to stop her body rejecting the new organs damaged her kidneys, leaving her needing regular dialysis. A third transplant was the only option and dad David stepped up as a live donor in 2006. Allison was too weak for a general anaesthetic and remained awake through the operation. “I couldn’t feel any pain, but Icould still feel them poking and pushing inside me,” she recalls. Since her final transplant Allison has made aremarkable recovery and even returned to university to complete her training as a doctor in 2010. She is now working towardsbecoming a GP. Her marriage to 33-year-old Nathan and the chance to do simple things, such as go on holiday, has made Allison appreciate her second chance even more. “It might sound ordinary, but it is very extraordinary for someone who has been through everything I have,” she says. Her experience as both a transplant patientand a doctor saw her put forward for top table talks with the Welsh health minister as an ambassador for the Kidney Wales Foundation. Her efforts mean the opt-out register could be up and running as soon as 2015. Supporters argue it is badly needed as three people die every day in the UK while waiting for a transplant. Allison says: “I think it’s great that Wales has made history and is leading the way. Now we need the rest of the UK to follow. Europe has been doing this for years.” The British Medical Association has also called for England to adopt an opt-out register. Yet opponents claim it could reduce the number of organs available and does not pay sufficient heed to the feelings of relatives. Those arguments are given short shrift by Allison. “How do they think the families of people waiting for a transplant feel?” More than anything, Allison knows just how fortunate she was to have not just one, but four, life-saving transplants. “I have been very lucky. I know that and think about it every day. It’s all down to those people who made the decision to donate their loved one’s organs.” http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/real-life-stories/by-giving-heart-away-gained-2125119 |
The US state of Texas is running out of a key drug used for lethal injections, according to officials. Texas Department of Criminal Justice spokesman Jason Clark said that the state's supply of pentobarbital would end in September. Texas has the highest execution rate in the country, with 11 inmates put to death so far in 2013. Some drugs companies have objected to their products being used for capital punishment. Texas has used pentobarbital, a drug used to treat severe epilepsy, in executions since July 2012. 'Clamped down' The state was forced to change to the single-dose sedative when supplies of sodium thiopental, one of three drugs usedpreviously, were cut off. But state officials are now having difficulties with the availability of pentobarbital, which is also typically used to put down animals. "We will be unable to use our current supply of pentobarbital after it expires,'' the Associated Press news agency quoted department spokesman Jason Clark as saying. "We are exploring all options at this time." The state is planning at least five more executions this year. Reuters quoted Mr Clark as saying that Texas was confident it would be able to continue with the deaths, despite the shortage. Richard Dieter, who heads the Washington-based Death Penalty Information Center, said other states would be having similar problems. "The states really scramble to go all over to get drugs,'' he told AP. "Some went overseas, some got from eachother. But these manufacturers - a numberthem are based in Europe - don't want to participate in our executions. So they've clamped down as much as they can." The first US prisoner put to death using pentobarbital is believed to be 58-year-oldJohn David Duty. Duty, who killed a cellmate in 2001, died in Oklahoma in December 2010. Texas is reported to have executed more than 500 death row inmates since 1982 - the highest of any US state. Virginia came in second with 110, AP said. http://m.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-23544131 |

The hypocrites can deny it all you want. The fact is that most of the commentators above are just happy to hear muslims being killed on a daily basis. But we shall remain patient. GEJ will face the music for all the atrocities being committed by the JTF in Borno. Same goes for his military chiefs. Muslims have faced even worse treatment before and survived. We will survive this as well. But the perpetrators should know one thing: Allah Himself will fight those who are hell bent on extinguishing his light. We will soon get there. |
Authorities in New Zealand have told a South African chef he is too fat to be allowed to live in the country. Immigration officials said Albert Buitenhuis, who weighs 130kg (286 pounds), did not have "an acceptable standard of health". He now faces expulsion despite shedding 30kg since he moved to the city of Christchurch six years ago. New Zealand has one of the highest obesity rates in the developed world, with nearly 30% of people overweight. Mr Buitenhuis and his wife, Marthie, movedfrom South Africa to Christchurch in 2007. At the time, the chef weighed 160kg. Until now, their annual work visas had been renewed with "very little problem", his wife said. "We applied year after year and there were no issues," she said. "They never mentioned Albert's weight or his health once and he was a lot heavier then." But in early May, the couple was told their work visas had been declined because of Mr Buitenhuis's weight. "The irony is that at the moment he weighs less than when we first arrived in New Zealand and also less than in his first medical, which was accepted by [immigration authorities]," his wife said. The couple has appealed to New Zealand's immigration minister, citing the chef's recent weight loss. An immigration spokesman said Mr Buitenhuis's application had been rejected because his obesity put him at "significant risk" of complications including diabetes, hypertension and heart disease. "It is important that all migrants have an acceptable standard of health to minimise costs and demands on New Zealand's health services," he said. http://m.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-23475583 |
