HealthChildren With Fat Mothers Are Likely To Die Before The Age Of 55 by Donmams(op): 6:18am On Sep 04, 2013
Children born to obese mothers are a third more likely to die before the age of 55 than those of normal weight women, research shows.

Fatter women’s children also have a 29 per cent higher chance of being admitted to hospital for heart attacks, angina and strokes.

Earlier studies found that babies born to overweight mothers areat greater risk of heart problems, diabetes and obesity, but the new research shows they are also more likely to die young.

One theory is that being overweight in pregnancy may cause permanent changes in appetite control and energy metabolism in the unborn child, leading to a greater risk of heartproblems in later life.

Experts from the universities of Aberdeen and Edinburgh studiedthe progress of nearly 38,000 babies born in Scotland between1950 and 1976.

The mothers’ weights were recorded during their first antenatal appointments and researchers checked death records for their children.

The results showed that childrenwere 35 per cent more likely to have suffered an early death by the age of 55 if their mother hada body mass index (BMI) of 30 orover in pregnancy.

BMI is a person’s weight in kilograms divided by the squareof their height in metres.

For example, an adult who weighs 70kg and whose height is 1.75m will have a BMI of 22.9.

People with a BMI of 18.5 to 25 are classed as being of normal weight, 25-30 is overweight andover 30 is obese.

The rise of middle-aged obesity

The average person over the age of 50 is classed as overweight.

Men and women over 50 have an average Body Mass Index (BMI) above 25, according to data from Saga Health Insurance. Figures from 11,000 customers show the average man is 5ft 9in and weighs 13st 7lb – which means they have a BMI of 27.9.

The average woman questionedby the insurer is 5ft 4in and weighs around 11st, giving her aBMI of 26.4, but only half of thosesurveyed said they should lose weight.

‘Carrying those extra pounds can put people at risk of developing a range of health problems – especially in later life,’ said Paul Green, director of communications at Saga.

‘Carrying a bit more weight could explain why fixing hips and knee joints are among the most frequent claims on Saga’s health insurance.’

Among the 28,540 mothers in the study, 21 per cent were overweight and four per cent were obese.

Among the 37,709 children, there were 6,551 deaths from any cause, with the leading cause of death being heart disease (24 per cent of deaths in men and 13 per cent in women).

Cancer accounted for a quarter of deaths in men and two in five women.

The increased rates of death andill-health held true even after other factors were taken into account, such as the mother’s age, socio-economic status and the child’s sex.

Writing online in the British Medical Journal, the experts saidthe results were a major public health concern because in Britain today around 20 per centof all women of childbearing ageare obese, while around a third are overweight.

Dr Sohinee Bhattacharya, of the University of Aberdeen, said: ‘We need to find out how to helpyoung women and their childrencontrol their weight better so that chronic disease risk is not transmitted from generation to generation.’

Professor Rebecca Reynolds, of the Tommy’s Centre for Maternaland Fetal Research at the University of Edinburgh, said: ‘Asobesity among pregnant women is rising, along with levels of obesity in the general population, our findings are of major public health concern.’

‘This research shows the importance of women starting their pregnancy at a normal weight,’ added Louise Silverton, director for midwifery at the Royal College of Midwives.

Doireann Maddock, senior cardiac nurse at the British Heart Foundation, which part-funded the study, said: ‘We know that a mother’s health in pregnancy can affect the health of their unborn baby.

‘But this study suggests an association between a mother’s weight in pregnancy and her child’s risk of dying prematurely in adulthood.’

So his first term did not ensure stability but his second term will? How? As for an Igbo Presidency the South East can forget it. They chose the wrong group to align with. The romance of the SE with GEJ has put paid to their future political ambitions permanently. The SE will be as big a loser as GEJ in 2015.

The trend is northwards. We'r just in 2013. It is becoming INCREASINGLY dangerous to criticise GEJ in public. By 2014 when other projects would have come on steam, those who criticise GEJ in public will be lynched by the public. By then, online critics and e-critics will be on their own.

Jobs/VacanciesRe: Do Footballers And Sportmen Deserve Higher Wage by Donmams(m): 6:36am On Sep 02, 2013
So far no one has been able to give OP a good enough answer. But let me try. OP it goes like this. Your argument is a little bit flawed. Sure the Messi's, Ronaldo's and Etoo's receive huge wages. But these individuals are at the very pinnacle of their sport. Since you're not too familiar with football you wouldn't know that even for the big leagues like england, spain and germany only the really big teams pay players anything above €20,000/week. Most players don't even get paid anything near this amount. Have you ever wondered what players from lower status clubs get paid per week? It's nothing more than the average pay within the society.
You are unaware of the fact that below the 20 team premier league, there are about 6 or 7 other leagues below it with about 200 times more players who paid nothing more than the minimum wage. Ditto for other leagues such as france, spain, germany, italy etc.
If you take professions such as medicine for example, you fail to notice that the very best doctors, surgeons, nurses and other support staff receive nearly 10 times more than their average colleagues within the same profession. Pretty much similar to football now isn't it?
More importantly, sports men and women have very limited time frames to practice their profession. A top top sports man or woman begin to decline once they cross the 30-year barrier. Most top footballers begin to enjoy astronomical salaries at the age of 20. So they have only 10 years before all that money stops coming in. Might i add that footballers don't earn any pension whatsoever. However, a doctor, nurse, civil servant's salary keeps rising until retirement. Which for some professions can be up to 70 years of age. So on average your average worker spends over 40 years of his life earning a living wage while sportsmen on average don't last more than 15 years. It is for this reason that sportsmen receive significantly more pay than your average worker.
If you consider the fact that 99% of footballers receive nothing more than the minimum wage and still get to retire at 35 without any pension and without much of a future(most of them are school dropouts), you'll realize that in actual fact, football is the worst profession in the world because it shortchanges most of its employees.
Even the likes of messi mostly end up destitutes within 4 years after retirement because after getting used to ostentatious lifestyles for over 10 years they find it difficult to adjust even after retirement when all that cash stops rolling in. They keep spending and spending until all that money runs out.
To cut a long story short, the lives of the biggest footballers might seem so unbelievably unfair to the rest of us, but the fact is that it is nothing but a mirage. The fact is in truth, we are better off than them in the long run. Far better.

Science/TechnologyScientists Invent The Mobile Phone Ultrasound Scanner by Donmams(op): 1:35pm On Aug 31, 2013
American scientists have invented the world's firstultrasound scanner for smartphones, which could revolutionise healthcarein countries where the technology is not widely available.
The MobiUS scanner plugs into smartphonesand tablets to provide an instant scan image on the mobile device's screen.
Its inventors believe that the device's portability and small price tag could providea breakthrough in medical care in third world countries.
The scanner is supplied with its own Windows tablet or smartphone, but its inventors are working on versions compatible with Apple and Android operating systems.
The MobiUS costs £7,000 compared to £60,000 for a full-size ultrasound model.
Sailesh Chutani, CEO of US creators MobiSante, said: 'Ultrasound imaging is safe, effective and can save lives, however more than 70 per cent of the world's population does not have access to ultrasound because it is expensive and not portable enough.
'Devices like MobiUS enable more care to beprovided outside of expensive settings like hospitals into settings that are less expensive, such as clinics and other locations where the patient needs immediate care.
He believes accurate andinexpensive diagnostics at the point of care is critical to reducing healthcare costs, while also improving outcomes.
MrChutani said that theMobiUS interface is extremely simple and can be mastered in just a few minutes.
'MobiUS has built in network connectivity which allows easy sharing of images from the device, for storage as well as for secondopinion or remote diagnosis.
'The device starts in less than a minute and since it is battery powered, it can work off the electric grid.'
This could be extremely useful in poorer countries where power is limited or unreliable.
The company said: 'MobiUS fuses the power and wireless connectivity of a smartphone with the internet into a game-changing diagnostic solution that is personal and accessible.'
The MobiUS interface is simple to use so that nurses can master it quickly. The system has built-in network connectivity that allows easy sharing of images from the device for second opinion or remote diagnosis. As it is battery powered it can work in areas without reliable power.

The same dubai that discovered oil at pretty much the same time with nigeria. SMH
AutosDubai’s Million Dollar Fleet Of Police Cars Includes Aston Martins, Bentley's by Donmams(op):
The Dubai police fleet is getting bigger, faster, and even more ridiculously expensive. Apparently a $450,000 Lamborghini Aventador was only the beginning, because the list of on-duty exotic cars in this millionaires’ playground has recently grown to include Bentleys, Ferraris, and a $1.4 million Aston Martin supercar.
Welcome to Dubai: Site of the world’s fastest and most expensive cop cars!

If you plan on trying to outrun the police in Dubai, get ready to receive a 200+mph passdirectly to jail. The Dubai police force is adding a glittering assortment of exotic cars to its fleet, including an Aston Martin One-77 hyper-car that costs approximately$1.4 million per copy.
Do the math, and that single Aston is equivalent to roughly 40 Ford Crown Victoria police cruisers. Also in the mix are cars like a $200,000 Bentley Continental GT coupe and the four-wheel-drive Ferrari FF, which happens to cost a cool $300,000.
At least the Bentley and Ferrari both have backseats for stowing extra gear, or the occasional bad guy.
That’s more than you can say about the Dubai force’s choice of a Lamborghini Aventador or Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG. Combined, these two supercars would set you back roughly $600,000 for the pair.

The fact that neither one of these supercarshas a backseat, or even doors that open conventionally, apparently didn’t bother Dubai’s budget crunchers. The scissor-doors on the wedge-shaped Lambo, and the gullwing-style ones found on the sultry Benzshould look mightily impressive…unless they happen to be approaching (fast!) in your rear-view mirror.

PoliticsAbuja Court Orders Extradition Of Nigerian Al-qaeda Suspect To US by Donmams(op): 8:42am On Aug 29, 2013
A federal high court in Abuja yesterday granted the request of the federal government seeking to extradite one Lawal Olaniyi Babafemi, also known as Abdullahi Ayatollah Mustapha, wanted inthe U.S. for terrorism.

Babafemi was indicted of conspiracy to provide support to a foreign terrorist organisation in violation of Title 18 of the United States code.

This month, the U.S. Embassy requested Babafemi’s extradition on a federal indictment charging he provided support to al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula.

Justice Ahmed Mohammed gave the order after he confirmed from the suspect that he was not going to contesthis extradition to the U.S.

‘‘Since there is no form of any objection by the respondent, Lawal Olaniyi Babafemi, a.k.a. Abdullah Ayatollah Mustapha, to the application for his extradition, this court is satisfied that the application by the Attorney General for the extradition of the respondent to the United States of America is proper and in accordance with the extradition Act 2004,’’ the judge said.

He also ordered that Babafemi be surrendered to U.S. officials not later than 15 days from when the order was made in line with the Extradition Act 2004.

The judge also ruled that Babafemi should remain in the custody of the Department of State Services until his extradition.

The U.S. government had on July 26, 2013 made a formal request to Nigeria seeking Babafemi’s extradition to answer charges of providing support to terrorist organisations against the United States of America.

U.S. court documents said that Babafemi traveled twice from Nigeria to Yemen tomeet and train with leaders of al-Qaida’sbranch in Yemen between January 2010 and August 2011. He assisted in AQAP’s English-language media operations, which include the publication of the magazine ‘‘Inspire.’’

At the direction of senior AQAP commander Anwar Al-Awlaki, who was killed on September 30, 2011 in a drone strike in the mountains of Yemen, Babafemi was provided with $8,600 to recruit English speakers from Nigeria to join the group, the papers said. While in Yemen, Babafemi also received weapons training from AQAP.

On February 21, 2013, a grand jury in theEastern District of New York returned a sealed indictment. The charges included conspiracy to provide material support to AQAP, and unlawful use of machine guns.

The Nigerian government started extradition proceedings in July.

The al-Qaida branch claims many terrorist attacks, including the 2009 attempted bombing of a Northwest Airline flight from Amsterdam to Detroit by a Nigerian, Umar Faruk Abdulmutallab, with explosives hidden in his underwear.

Politics2015: Jonathan Deserves Second Term – Alamieyeseigha by Donmams(op): 6:07am On Aug 29, 2013
Former governor of Bayelsa state, Chief Diepreye Alamieyeseigha, has declared that President Goodluck Jonathan deserves a second term in office.

The former governor stated this in chat with journalists in Ibadan during a private visit to Governor Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo state.

He stated that though president was yetto declare his ambition for second term, the former governor however said there was need for Nigerians to give him the chance as he deserves another four years to complete his good works.

He said it was glaring that President Goodluck Jonathan is a silent achiever who would not always blow his trumpet, adding that Nigerians should give the transformation agenda of the administration a chance, if the nation must move forward.

He said: “We know what this country was like before Jonathan came in. This country was rotten administration after administration, but we can see what effort he is making to transform it. It is unfortunate that we celebrated and keep celebrating people who destroyed this country. Goodluck Jonathan is a silent performer and in every sector, you can see his impact.”

The former governor blamed the various security challenges currently facing the country on those he said werenot happy with the situation of things, stressing that Nigeria belongs to everybody and not any particular group of people.

Politics2015: APC Will Sweep South-south – Ikimi by Donmams(op): 6:00am On Aug 29, 2013
One of the national leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief Tom Ikimi, yesterday said that the party would displace the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the oil-rich South-south geo-political zone in 2015.

Ikimi, who is the interim chairman of theparty in the zone, stated this during a harmonisation meeting of the Delta state chapter of the party in Asaba, the state capital.

He said the configuration of Nigeria will change in 2015 with Delta state becoming an APC state just as he noted that Rivers is about to fall, while Cross River and Akwa-Ibom are sure berth for the APC.

He said: “Democracy is sure because of APC. Five PDP governors have been moving about challenging their party; they cannot do them anything because they will come to us. In fact, don’t say I told you, they are coming to APC.”

Ikimi said the APC was an alternative and not an opposition party, adding thatthe APC was only waiting for 2015 to join the ranks of opposition parties powerful enough to seize the mantle of leadership from the governments headed by the ruling parties.

According to him: “It has happened in Italy, it has happened in France. In Africa,it happened in Sierra Leone, Ghana and Senegal and the next destination of change is Nigeria.”

He said the national leaders of the APC were in Delta state to formally establish the party, adding that a harmonisation committee would be established to properly fuse the structures of the merging parties in the state into the APCfold.

PoliticsSuntai's Wife Dissolves Taraba State Cabinet by Donmams(op): 1:54pm On Aug 28, 2013
The brain-damaged governor of Taraba State, Danbaba Suntai has purportedly dissolved his entire cabinet shortly after the attorney general of the state, Barrister G. T Kataps outlined reasons the governor didn't need to appear before the house of assembly before taking over power in the state 72 hours after he returned to the government in a carefully choreographed scam.

Mr. Kataps was later appointed as the new secretary of the state government in an announcement by the commissioner of information, Emmanuel Bello.

However, sources told Saharareporters thatthe bizarre announcement was hatched by Mrs. Hauwa Suntai, the wife of the ailing governor who is illegally occupying the government house using her brain-damaged husband as a shield.

A source in the camp of the Acting governor, Alhaji Garba Umar told Saharareporters that the cabinet dissolution by Mr. Suntai's wife carries no effect.

They urged residents to disregard the purported dissolution of the cabinet and go about their normal duties.

The acting governor and several commissioners including security chiefs in the state attended a meeting where they planned to adequately respond to the ruse, our source stated.
