I am sure some people are wondering what i mean by cross-migration. What i mean is should all southerners leave the north and all northerners leave the south? If Nigeria breaks into north and south it means all southerners living in the north will become illegal aliens and vice versa. Or should everyone be allowed to choose which side to join? Please let's have your say in this debate. |
Ogun State Governor Ibikunle Amosun yesterday said yesterday that his administration will do its best to rehabilitate federal and state roads in the state. The governor, who lamented the state of roads across the country, said a serving minister had to jet out of the country for medical treatment after plying the Lagos/Ibadan/Sagamu/Benin road. The governor, while presenting the 2014 budget proposal of N210.21 billion to the state House of Assembly, said he was shocked by the development. Amosun lamented that the poor state of the road is having a negative impact on the masses. According to the budget, N117.51 billion is for capital expenditure while N92.70 billion is for recurrent expenditure. The focus of the 2014 budget, Amosun said is to consolidate on the progress made in the past two years in developing the state. The education sector got the highest allocation. The Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) has accused President Goodluck Jonathan administration of marginalising Muslims in key appointments in institutions and engaging in systematic cleansing of Muslims from key positions of authority. This is contained in a communiqué of the expanded General Purpose Committee (GPC) meeting of the council held last Wednesday in Abuja. “The NSCIA is concerned over the disturbing trend of marginalising Muslims in key appointments in Federal Government institutions. Data available to the Council indicates a systematic cleansing of Muslims from key positions of authority. This is dangerous for a nation which should encourage harmony and unity based on equity, justice and respect for diversity and pluralism,” it said. “Council also notes that admission into key military institutions such as Nigeria Defence Academy (NDA) and patterns of recruitment into police and other security agencies do not show sensitivity to balance and social indices such as faith. Muslims who are qualified should be admitted and trained on a scale that shows respect for a multi-religious nation such as Nigeria.” The communiqué was signed by Muhammad K. Qasim, the acting Director of Publicity. On the raging controversy on the usage of Hijab by Muslim female students and workers, the council said, “The Constitution guarantees to every Nigerian the freedom of worship and religious practice. Appropriate Muslim dressing for women in all public engagements and outings is a mandatory requirement for Muslims. Governments and other institutions which deny Muslim females their right to dress appropriately such as wearing of hijab with uniforms are therefore in violation of the rights of the Nigerian Muslims. “Council calls on the Federal and State Governments and all other private and public institutions to stop the policy of depriving Muslim women of their rights to dress in accordance with the demands of their faith.” While noting that President Goodluck Jonathan has welcomed the recommendation of the Committee on Dialogue and Peaceful Resolution of Security Challenges in the North that the Federal Government should set up mechanism for providing appropriate relief to all victims of the Boko Haram insurgency, the council urges the President to expedite action towards establishing such a mechanism so that the much-needed relief can be made available to all those who deserve it. The council also noted that the National Educational Research and Development Council’s (NERDC’s) new curriculum from primary to secondary school which has deprived young Nigerians of their rights to receive full and mandatory religious education is a major failing by all governments and is unacceptable. It urged that children must be availed full opportunities to receive religious instruction and training until at least the end of Senior Secondary School. “The new curriculum which relegates Islamic Studies/ Christian Religious Studies (IS/CRS) to a part of a subject (up to Junior Secondary School) and which made the subjects optional at the Senior Secondary level be reversed so that the two are made independent, core and compulsory up to the Senior Secondary level,” it said. A friend of mine who owns a shop sold a few items to a stranger who duly paid for everything he bought. After completing the transaction, the customer, who had come into the shop with a closed carton, asked the shop owner to please look after his carton for a few seconds while he buys some items just across the street. The shop owner, not suspecting anything, agreed. As soon as the customer was out of sight, two policemen came into the shop and accused the shop owner of dealing in counterfeit currencies. The shop owner laughed off the accusation and challenged them to search the shop for any trace of counterfeit money. The policemen searched everywhere but couldn't find anything. It was then that they decided to open the sealed carton box of the customer who had just left. And lo and behold! The carton was filled with counterfeit currency! This happened yesterday morning and right now my friend is still in detention. I'm sharing this story with fellow Nairalanders so that more people won't fall for that trap. A word is enough for the wise. |
New Muslim converts consisting of 17 Igbos, one Yoruba and a Northern Hausa Christian were yesterday in Abuja charged to uphold the tenets of Islam in order not the lose the essence of their conversion. The Chief Imam of Abuja National Mosque, Sheik Musa Muhammed gave the charge while administering the Oath of Sha’adah on the converts and pronouncing their newly adopted Muslim names during the weekly Jumat Khutbah (Sermon). All the converts were unanimous in affirming to the beauty of Islam as well as the virtues seen in Muslims. They told the Imam that they were attracted by such qualities to Islam. The new converts also commended the Chairman of the Council of Village Heads in Imo State, Chief Musa (Sylvester) O. Dimunah, who accepted Islam in January this year. They also commended a former secretary of the council and the executive secretary of Justice Mamman Nasir’s Islamic Centre for Peace and Research, Alhaji Ibrahim Biobo Nlomije, who they said facilitated their conversion. Alhaji Nlomije said the acceptance of Islam by the newly converts was an attestation that Islam is not a sectional religion. He said such conversion attests to the achievement of the Justice Nasir’s Centre, which among others, deepens religious tolerance and opens more opportunities for non-Muslims to embrace Islam. He also commended the Bauchi, Imo, Abia and Sokoto state governments for their assistance to the centre. The new converts from Imo State are Chief Suleiman Nwachukwu (Udobundu 1 of Ifakala Mbaitoli), Ibrahim Uchenna Ukah, Muhammad Sani Stanley Uziogwe, Bello Kelvin Nmadu, Habibullah Kosoro Ofolete, Jamilu Osita Agocha, Haruna Chichebem Nwabirika, Abdulazeez Paschal Iroegbulam, Suleiman Ifeanyi Uzoma, Adam Nduka Nweko, Dawuda Nnaemeka Uzoma, Aliyu Prince Onyekwume and Musa (Anayo) Adugbaa. Others are Abdulmalik Bongo Edet (Cross River), Hassan Babalola Shegun (Ondo), Nasir Peter Ndubisi (Anambra) and Bashir Prince Dulla (Akwa Ibom). It will be recalled that Chief Hassan Ikenna Kelechi Amah and Mr Ahmed Aka Onyero from Owerri, Imo state were last August convert to Islam. http://weeklytrust.com.ng/index.php/new-news/14727-17-igbos-2-others-convert-to-islam |

Wives, mothers and children of persons allegedly arrested by the military operatives and detained for months took to the streets of Maiduguri pleading with the authorities to release their husbands, children and parents in detention or tell them the truth if they are no longer alive. KAREEM HARUNA, Maiduguri reports. It was an emotional scenario when the women, in their hundreds, stormed the premises of the Borno Radio Television (BRTV) asking to be heard over their plights. LEADERSHIP Weekend gathered from most of the troubled groups that their husbands, sons and fathers had been taken away by military operatives and kept in detention in the barracks for different periods ranging from eight months to over one year. Ya'hadiza Bulama Musa, a mother and Medical Records staff of the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, who was the spokesperson for the group, said most of their husbands and children arrested by the soldiers months back were innocent. She wondered why they were still being kept in custody without anyone telling them the truth about their state of being. In an emotionally drenched voice and in tears, Ya'hadiza said two of her sons, Mustapha Tijjani Bukar and Allamin Sule Tijani, both graduates, were arrested while they were driving out of their street at Ngomari junction on June 6, 2013, and since then she had not set her eyes on them. "Our children are not Boko Haram. They were arrested innocently and wrongly by the JTF who labelled them Boko Haram. I am a mother and should know my children better. If they are Boko Haram, I will not be here wasting my time. But I know my children; they are educated just like their parents. "I have written several letters to the then JTF and even the present 7 Division in September and October but they never listened to me or responded to me. The last time I was there the commander chased me away that they didn’t want to see anyone again. I became afraid and could not go back there again. If they are dead let them tell me so that I can mourn them in peace," she said. A 14-year-old boy, Bashir Zarami, who broke down in tears while recounting his ordeal when his father was arrested in his presence, said he could no longer go to school or feed himself properly. "My father is a provision seller there at Bayan Quarters area," he recalled. "I was with him the day soldiers came to our shop eight months ago (February) and began to beat us, asking us to lie down with our faces to the ground. After treading on us, they dragged my father out and took him away. Since then I was left alone. I don’t know my mother; my father brought me up alone. Now I have no one, I cannot go to school, and no one to feed me except I beg. Please Governor Kashim should assist me to free my father; they said he is in Giwa barracks, and I cannot go there." Another woman, Halima Isa, said her son, Yahaya, 30 years old, was a furniture maker at Jiddari Polo area of Maiduguri. Security personnel arrested him one morning while trying to pray at home. "He was in the bedroom with his wife when soldiers came in to pick him calling him Boko Haram. He was innocent. That boy feeds and takes care of me and his pregnant wife. I have nobody except him. He pays for my medical bills; treats my hypertension and ulcer ailment. We are not Boko Haram; we are Fulanis from Adamawa, and God knows we don’t know any Boko Haram. Please government should help us to see our children again." Aisha Muhammed Luwaye said her husband was arrested on the day a police officer's wife was killed by Boko Haram behind the Railway Quarters. "We were at home on that day when soldiers came to carry out mass arrest. And since then he has not returned. It is over one year now, and I am left alone with 4 children. I was pregnant then, but when I later put to bed, the child died because I had no means of taking care of him. I swear by the holy Quran that he is innocent. He can't even hurt a fly.” Several other women had their tales of sorrow and denial insisting that their husbands, brothers and sons were not Boko Haram. LEADERSHIP Weekend gathered that most of the women came from Bayan Quarters, a location that is very close to where the deceased Boko Haram leader, Muhammed Yusuf, had his main mosque, now demolished by the military. In February this year, the Directorate of Civil Military Relations from the Defence headquarters Abuja, led by Air Commodore Ademola Onitiju visited Maiduguri in the wake of an earlier protest that the army had been keeping suspects in detention without trial. Onitiju, who interacted with the locals, promised that a special investigation team made up of legal luminaries would soon be deployed by the Defence Headquarters to screen suspects in detention with a view to freeing innocent and charging those "who had case to answer to civil courts for trial." http://leadership.ng/news/161113/maiduguri-women-jtf-release-our-husbands-children-now |
The fact is that the born to rule mentality accorded to northerners is nothing but a ruse. If northerners were really hateful of southern rule, i wonder why Abdulsalam Abubakar, in conjunction with IBB, all northerners, decided to hand over power to a southerner. Why is it that most southerners don't ask themselves that question? The north has over 70% of the country's landmass and over 70% of the country's population. Not forgetting that muslims make up over 80% of the north, i wonder why christians are made to believe muslims hate them when Christians have been elected into positions of authority in muslim dominated states like Taraba and Kaduna as governors. In addition, 1 in every 3 northern states have a christian deputy governor, despite the fact that in all the states where christians are deputy governors, christians do not make up to 30% of the population? GEJ got less than 25% of the votes in only two northern states: Kano and Sokoto. However, in the entire south(SW, SS, SE,) with the exception of Ondo, no northern candidate got up to 10% of the total votes in any southern state. So who is really born to rule? I think the figures speak for themselves. |

Running a good government is not as difficult as President Goodluck Jonathan has made it seem. There is no magic to why nations succeed or fail. It’s all about the quality of the mind of the leader. And until President Jonathan does a mind transplant, he is guaranteed to fail. Last week, the Ghanaian president, John Mahama, fired a minister, Victoria Hammah, who played a major role in his election as president. Her offence? She was caught on tape saying she would remain in politics until she made a million dollars. In Nigeria, that’s about N160 million. Note that Victoria Hammah was not yet guilty of corruption. So why should we be surprised that Ghana has done so well in the past few years so much so that we now send our children to schools in the country, troop to its hospitals for treatment, and those who can afford it are locating their holiday homes there? Ghana is not even nearly as endowed as Nigeria. Yet, it has recorded an average of 8 per cent growth rate consistently for a very long time. It produces only 115,000 barrels of crude per day, which is less than a third of the total quantity stolen by oil thieves in Nigeria without repercussions whatsoever. Officially, Nigeria is supposed to be producing 2.5 million barrels per day; with a better president, we can produce up to 4 million barrels daily. No president in the world ever achieves anything if that president does not see corruption as a grievous crime. President Jonathan does not think that corruption is such a big deal and he does not even pretend about it. As always, President Jonathan is currently in a rowdy corruption row. Stella Oduah, his very dear minister, has been caught red-handed with her fingers in the till. Nigerians everywhere, including several members of the president’s government and party, think Stella should resign, and, if she refuses, the president should sack her just like his Ghanaian counterpart did. Instead, what we hear filtering out of Jonathan’s villa is that Stella is being persecuted because she is Igbo. What has being Igbo got to do with stealing? Some of the fiercest advocates of “Stella must go” are Igbo. The truth is that it is not Stella that is on trial here; it is Jonathan himself. And if he insists on keeping her, it is he that should go. During the latest media chat, someone asked the president what he thought about corruption in his government. Every other president, even the most thieving president in the world, would have pretended and talked tough about fighting corruption. But not our president! Instead, he started quoting a nebulous report which placed corruption as the fourth most serious problem facing Nigeria. It was not the first, second or third, he said, feeling very happy with himself. So what if corruption was placed fourth in the order of Nigeria’s problems? Does that mean it is not an issue? It’s not only Stella’s aviation cars that do not mean anything to the president. The N1.6 trillion fuel subsidy heist also means absolutely nothing to the president; the N100 billion stolen police pension fund means nothing to the president. It was the Senate that was more concerned and the president was even accused of shielding the thief. The Nuhu Ribadu Report means nothing to the president. There are sundry others. Lee Kuan Yew, former prime minister of Singapore and one credited with transforming his very tiny backward state into a First World nation, has proved that running a good government is not nuclear science. He said that the first thing he tackled as prime minister was the corruption issue. He made it very clear that no country can ever make progress if it is soft on corruption. Till today, Singapore remains harsh on corruption. President Jonathan would gladly say that Singapore is a small country compared to Nigeria; what about China? China moved from a very big, backward and messy country into the country with the second largest economy in the world today and on its way to becoming the biggest economy in the world in the coming years. Listen to the Chinese leaders speak on corruption and you know one of the reasons they are doing so well. China is one of the very few countries in the world where some types of corruption carry the death sentence. But I know our president doesn’t care and doesn’t give a damn. That is why he will never succeed as president of Nigeria or even as chairman of a local government. EARSHOT ‘Jonathan Under Pressure To Run’ A presidential handler amused the world last week when he said Jonathan was under pressure to run. Of course, Jonathan is under pressure to run. There are so many groups that want the president to run, most especially thieves (both government officials and oil thieves). But the presidential handler is even more correct than he realises. It is not only the thieves that want Jonathan to run. I also desperately want Jonathan to run. That is the surest way to dismantle that gangster party called the PDP. Nigeria desperately needs to move forward; so please Jonathan run, run, run. http://leadership.ng/news/111113/why-jonathan-guaranteed-fail |

At least, 35 people are feared dead in seven Agatu villages, which were sacked yesterday by gunmen in a fresh attack that took the people by surprise. Some of the people from the sacked villages who spoke to our reporter yesterday at about 5.00pm put the death toll at 35, and blamed suspected cattle rearers for the killings. The Agatu people in Benue State have come under severe attacks in recent times, just as the heavy fighting going on in the area, as at the time of sending this report, would be the third in one week alone. At least, an estimated 200 deaths have been recorded in fightings between farmers and herders in Benue State this year alone. Benue State’s Commissioner for Works, Mr John Ngbede, who hails from Agatu area, confirmed the latest attack, which came barely 24 hours after he addressed newsmen in Makurdi on the disturbing trend. Mr Ngbede had appealed to security agencies last Friday to take charge, as reports reaching him revealed that unknown gunmen were advancing to invade more communities in his locality. He told Sunday Trust yesterday that heavy fighting was going on in Agatu, just as houses were being set on fire and many were feared dead. “It is true that Agatu is boiling at the moment. Many people are feared dead. I can’t confirm the exact number right now,” Ngbede said. Also, member representing Agatu state constituency in the Benue State House of Assembly, Hon Sule Audu, told our reporter that seven villages had been sacked, with many feared dead. He mentioned the villages to include Ello, Okpagabi, Ogwule-Ankpa, Ogbangede, Ekwo, Enogaje and Okpanchenyi. The lawmaker lamented that there were not enough security men on ground to counter the situation as the gunmen were having a field day and making further progress to neighbouring villages. “As I speak to you, only few soldiers are on ground. They don’t even have mobility to match the strength of the invaders. The attackers are numerous, so many that we can’t count them. They are spread across all the communities and unleashing terror on my people without any security resistance. “They are moving towards Oshugbudu now and I ask, what can less than 40 soldiers on ground do to stop armed invaders who may be in hundreds,” Audu queried? However, the state Secretary of the Myetti-Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), Garus Gololo, has denied that the invaders were Fulani herders. Gololo said that since a reconciliation committee was set up by the Ochi’ Idoma to broker peace between the herders and Agatu natives, there had never been a reason for them to fight again. He said also: “I don’t know which people are attacking the Agatu in recent times. We don’t have any Fulani person currently residing in the area, and as I had said earlier, we need peace, so it couldn’t have been my people,” he maintained. Contacted, the Benue State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr Daniel Ezeala, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), confirmed the heavy fighting. “Five Agatu villages are currently under heavy attacks. We can’t confirm the exact number of causality now. However, we are on top of the situation,” Ezeala noted. http://sundaytrust.com.ng/index.php/news/14985-farmers-herdsmen-conflict-heavy-fighting-erupts-in-benue |

The death toll from one of the strongest storms on record that ravaged the central Philippine city of Tacloban could reach 10,000 people, officials said Sunday after the extent of massive devastation became apparent and horrified survivors spoke of storm surges as high as trees and winds sounding like the roar of a jumbo jet.
Regional police chief Elmer Soria said he was briefed by Leyte provincial Gov. Dominic Petilla late Saturday and told there were about 10,000 deaths in the province, mostly by drowning and from collapsed buildings. The governor's figure was based on reports from village officials in areas where Typhoon Haiyan slammed Friday. Tacloban city administrator Tecson Lim said that the death toll in the city alone "could go up to 10,000." Tacloban is the Leyte provincial capital of 200,000 people and the biggest city on Leyte Island. http://news.yahoo.com/philippine-typhoon-death-toll-could-reach-10-000-011657978.html |
The chairman, Senate Committee on Aviation representing Imo West, Sen. Hope Uzodinma has urged people of Imo state to support President Jonathan for the 2015 presidential election. Senator Uzodinma who made this call during the stakeholders Forum held in Imo state stated the decision of the forum to be proactive both in national and state politics. He revealed that it is in this light that they have determined to endorse President Jonathan for the 2015 presidential election. He said, “Indeed president Jonathan has done much for Ndigbo in general and Orlu people in particular. I am sure that you are aware that work on the second Niger Bridge project has long commenced. The Akanu Ibiam work at International airport in Enugu has taken off. These are just but a few of the signature projects the federal government has executed in the south east since the inception of this administration.” Speaking further for the need for Orlu people to rise to this call, he urged the people to become sole contributors and key players in the politics of the state. http://leadership.ng/news/101113/2015-sen-uzodinma-urges-ndigbo-support-jonathan |

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has warned that any plan by the federal government to forcefully reopen the nation's universities will be met with stiff resistance.
The development came as President Goodluck Jonathan has decided to personally intervene in the resolution of the impasse and has summoned the leadership of ASUU to the Presidential Villa, Abuja. ASUU chairman, University of Abuja Chapter, Mr. Clement Chup, who confirmed the invitation by President Jonathan for meeting, however, said anything short of a clear agenda for implementing the 2009 Agreement would not be acceptable to the Union. In a statement he signed and made available to journalists in Abuja during the weekend, Mr. Chup, said any form of authoritarian approach in the resolution of the crisis would not work. He added the surest and the shortest route to industrial harmony in the university system was the fastest approach to revitalising the system. The UNIABUJA chairman of ASUU, stressed that the union would not in any way be intimidated into jeopardising the future of Nigerian students, and by implication, the country, through half measures or by coercion. He said "The attention of our union is drawn to some recent reports in some media alleging that the President of Nigeria would direct the re-opening of all Nigerian universities with or without an amicable resolution with ASUU. "We wish to state that while the President of the Federation has issued an invitation to the leaders of our union for dialogue, it will be totally unacceptable to our members if government fails to come out with a clear agenda on implementing the 2009 Agreement. "Authoritarian posturing has never solved and will not solve the impasse. We are calling on Mr President to tow the path of honour and as a democrat, respect the 2009 Agreement. "This is the surest and the shortest route to industrial harmony in the University system and the fastest approach to revitalising the system. "We wish to further state that while our Union looks forward to an immediate resolution of the impasse, through government’s commitment to implement the 2009 FGN/ASUU agreement, we shall not in any way be intimidated into jeopardising the future of our students, and by implication, the country, through half measures or by coercion." In 2007, Goodluck Jonathan declared assets worth over #300 million. For a son of a creek fisherman who had no shoes as a child, to a civil servant in the Bayelsa Civil Service before he became deputy governor and later governor of his State, it is surprising that GEJ in a matter of 3 or 4 years, was able to amass #300 million. Speaks volumes doesn't it? |
Nigeria’s current leaders, unlike those of the past, are thieves who exploit every available opportunity to enrich themselves, former governor of Kaduna State, Alhaji Balarabe Musa, said yesterday.
The elder statesman who spoke during a visit by civil rights groups on his 77th birthday also blamed the system that controls all aspects of development and the political leadership it produces which encourages prioritisation of self interest above public interest. “The situation today is such that we have leaders who are really thieves and if you doubt it, let me remind you that anybody who is able to become a councillor in Nigeria or a member of a state House of Assembly or Senate, governor or president ends up serving himself to the extent that he becomes the richest in his constituency”. “A councillor in most parts of Nigeria is the richest person in his ward. The president in Nigeria, whoever he is, will be the richest in the country by the time he leaves office even if he is the son of a grass cutter hunter. This means that truly the leaders in Nigeria are thieves,” he said. Read More @: http://dailytrust.info/index.php/top-stories/9128-nigerian-leaders-are-thieves-balarabe-musa |
