People saying we should wait till next year are jokers.
We've given a group of thinking adults 10 whole months and they keep going back and forth the same issue.

Lately, the last meeting was in November, 2 future meetings were cancelled without any explanation. Like our education is a joke to them.

We need to register our displeasure and we need to do it now! anybody that wants to wait till january should join us then, we aren't waiting for you.

Computers / Re: Post Your Computer (PC) Troubles Here. by Donpre(m): 10:43pm On Dec 15, 2020
Hello guys,

my PC refuses to charge past 79%, I've left it charging for hours and it refuses to bulge.

Did some googling and according to HP forums and their diagnostics software, I need to calibrate it. The steps for calibration requires that I charge to 99-100, completely discharge and recharge till 99-100

The problem now is that how can I calibrate it when it refuses to fully charge?

Hello guys. Do u guys think it's too late at 22 to go for mbbs. I intend on getting in via direct entry, so instead of the 6 years it would b 5years. I am a graduate with good grades from a life sciences department. But the situation of the country is also making me afraid(ASUU and co). Do u guys think it's worth it. My parents are willing to fund me Gods willing. I have always dreamt of getting an mbbs degree.
I don't know which courses are under life sciences, but I know most universities prefer those from basic health sciences, hence I would advise the UTME route if you don't want to end up wasting a year at home chasing D.E... Not sure if there are rules against D.E and UTME simultaneously but if there aren't, do take on both to be safe

As regards the age, I would say you're even too young to be asking this question. I know coursemates who stayed at home writing jamb till they were 20-23, and they started in year 1, that's aside the coursemates who are above 25 and some in their 30s. Trust you'll always meet those way older than you are in med school and also those who got it just after their 16th birthday. I'm saying, forget age here especially if you're as young as you are.

You should be less bothered about the strikes, for all we know, this could the last one for a long time or one of many, its impossible to plan around this things. The only choice is going to a private or foreign university, if you can't afford that then you just have to live with the strikes

Like someone once said, whether or not you take action now, you'll grow older anyway, its better you do that chasing your dream.

Good luck in your journey

Nice insights

but I don't think developing for those niches would be easy for a new developer who can't navigate documentations written for experienced developers

Most of the newbies rely on videos and books and apps like sololearn that basically spoon-feeds them programming. Throw them into python's documentation alone and see them abandon programming.

Also a newbie developer without a job/gigs to pay bills, spending months or even years developing for a specify niche whose payout isn't sure is terrible advice in my opinion. The whole niche-ing down is something only an experienced developer can do

Programming / Re: Should One Learn Programming For The Sole Aim Of Making Money? by Donpre(m): 12:36pm On Dec 09, 2020
Do it for whatever reason you want to do. It doesn't matter

For money?

For passion?

its all the same to many-faced god

However it isn't a get-rich-quick scheme. Its hard work, lots of hard work, studying, tutorials, documentation, experimenting... some times your code just don't work and you don't know why, very frustrating.
Its not an easy road and before you start getting paid, it'll take months, if not up to a year as competition is steadily rising.
In fact if you're not good enough to impress people with your work, you won't ever get paid.

Aside all the pessimism above, it is very rewarding.

For example, if I was asked to build a calculator, one that takes input and continues calculation with the same input, I'd have to rewatch the tutorial on how to do it. If asked to do it again next week, I'd still have to rewatch the tutorial again

You have a problem-solving skills problem not a programming one.

Basically a calculator is just input and calculation.

Can you get input from the user?... Yes
Can you calculate an expression?... Yes

Can you get an input calculated?... Calculator.

It works by breaking down large problems into very smaller ones and building up from what you can do to what you need to do.

You need to get books on how to solve problems.
Some I have are "Think like a Programmer", "Classic computer science problems in python"... I haven't even read them yet but they might help you get into the process of breaking down large problems.

Ultimately, you just need to build more and attempt more problems, we learn by experience. Even apprentice carpenters get confused on how massive roofs are made but by making them or watching them being made, he learns.
Watching tutorial to do it is very good, but not learning how they are doing it is an error on your part. It not about the "if the works", but about "How does it work and can I do it myself next time"

Good luck!

Some of the things learnt:
Strings, Integers, lists, if, elif, else statements, while loops, some functions, defining functions, for and in statements, inputs...

There were no exercises (python for dummies)
But someone recommended automating the boring stuff with python, I'll continue with that, it has some exercises
So your problem is not that you don't know these things but don't know how to apply them in solving problems?

This is the 4th time I'll be going through python basics, the last time was during the lock down I couldn't focus cos of WAEC, now I'm done with all SSCE and I don't want this pre-admission period to go to waste

I restarted learning 2 weeks ago with my phone (no system). I've been going through PDFs and video tutorials. I'm kind of familiar with somethings so I choose to ignore them... I tried a python challenge on Solo Learn but it was like I knew nothing

How did you guys learn Python??
What exactly did you learn those 4 times? Like list the things

Did the book you used give you exercises and did you do them?

What can you say "I definitely Know this" and what will you say "I've read this before but can't remember how it works"

Give answers to the above question then maybe we'll find out what you're doing wrong

am trying to make a web site that also has an app and shares the same database which pl do you think i should use,i already started learning phyton and java for the app
Since you're learning python, then Django or Flask or FastAPI
They're all good, google will give you their websites, they have ton of videos on youtube, pick one and happy debugging.

You can also use java for the backend with springboot.

Like i said, there are tons of backend languages and you're learning 2 of them. So which ever you feel comfortable with, simply pick one of their web framework and build your backend with it.

Good luck

So which programming language do you know well and what exactly are you trying to do?

please can you explain framework
You know how you need travel from one place to another, you don't go building a car from scratch but instead just buy one and all you need is to learn how to drive it?..... That's basically the concept of frameworks.

It contains codes that do specific things for you, you just need to learn how to use it.

So instead of doing a lot of work yourself, you just use a framework the way you want to and get things done way way faster.

Django is a great framework but its not popular in Nigeria.

Learn php or nodejs(express). Thats what people fight about these days.

Any one of them will get your jobs in Nigeria, however popular consensus says php will get you more jobs

Programming / Re: Someone Please Explain Backend To Me by Donpre(m): 1:10pm On Dec 01, 2020
If you're a beginner, focus on learning basic programming concepts instead of confusing yourself with backend or frontend. All that wouldn't matter if you can do loops, conditional statement, methods or classes.

To answer your question, backend is code that runs on a server and integrates the frontend with a database amongst many other things the backend does.

For backend languages, there are a ton of them each with a ton of frameworks.
So again learn programming first, all the backend languages are basically the same with a slight difference in syntax.

Also python is one the many backend languages.

Pick anyone, you can easily switch from one to another when you understand the request-response life cycle, database integration, Security and authentication etc.

Programming / Re: Pls Tech Gurus..i Dont Understand What Apis Mean In Javascript.. Help! by Donpre(m): 8:58pm On Nov 22, 2020
Firstly APIs is a general programming, in fact computer science concept.

Imagine a tv and remote, you don't change channels by loosing the board and manipulating transitors, you press the remote and the TV does something.

The remote is the API, it gives you access to get, modify or delete channels in the TV, you don't know how it does this, you just know that the delete button on the remote(API) deletes whichever channel you call
So you interact with the API, and not the server directly.

IN JS(the web in general as web apis can be written in any backend language)
you get a series of links, which might take data.

Calling these links will do something
for example:
website/get-all-books.... would give you all the books in the database(usually in JSON for REST API)
website/delete-book/id=1.... would delete the book with id=1

the mechanism that deletes or fetches the book is hidden within the server serving the apis, you don't know how that works, you just know it does what you want it to do

This is a simplified explanation, do read up more advanced explanations
