PoliticsUPDATED: APC Governors Bow To Pressure, Back Buhari On Tenure by DONSMITH123(op): 1:03pm On Apr 04, 2018

State governors elected on the platform of the ruling All Progressives Congress have finally bowed to pressure on the issue of tenure extension for party officials at all levels.

They have now resolved to back President Muhammadu Buhari’s position that such elongation of tenure is illegal.

Some state governors who met with Buhari again on Wednesday disclosed their new position to State House correspondents at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

A similar meeting between the President and all the governors had ended in a deadlock on Tuesday.

Those who met the President on Wednesday included governors of Zamfara, Abdulazeez Yari; Plateau, Simon Lalong; Imo, Rochas Okorocha;Kano, Abdullahi Ganduje and Ogun, Ibikunle Amosun.

At the end of the meeting, Yari told reporters that after the Tuesday meeting with Buhari, the governors again met late in the night and decided to round off with consultations with the President.

He said all the 24 state governors have agreed that elections of party officials should hold at all levels as canvassed by the President at the last meeting of the party’s National Executive Council.

Yari said, “We consulted and all the 24 governors of the APC are on the same page with Mr. President that we are going to respect our party’s constitution, and respect the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“Therefore, we collectively agreed that we will have congresses at all levels – Local – State and National.

“The committee set up by the National Secretariat of our party headed by governor of Plateau State, is presenting its report later today (Wednesday). The governors are also meeting with the working committee today so that we come up with convention committee names as well as timetable of the election.

“So, there is no deadlock in our meeting, we have progressed and very soon you will have the names of the convention committee members as well as the timetable.”

Okorocha on his part insisted that despite the developments of the last few days, there is no crisis in the party.

He urged those peddling rumour of crisis in the party to desist.

“We are simply saying that their tenure has ended and those who wish to re-contest can re-contest and can be elected into our party structure.

“So we are all one as family and we are set to go for 2019 elections in victory,” he added.

Lalong also corroborated his colleagues’ position that there is no crisis in the party.

He confirmed that he would be submitting the report of the technical committee he heads to the party leadership on Wednesday.

The Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, and the national leader of the All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, have said they will continue to talk about the corruption perpetrated under the President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration.

They stated this on Thursday at the 10th Bola Tinubu Colloquium in Lagos, where the 66th birthday of the former governor of Lagos State was commemorated.

Osinbajo, who described corruption as an existential problem for Nigeria, said, “The corruption of the previous five years destroyed the economy.”

“They say don’t talk about it. What should we talk about? If we are not talking about it, then what is the lesson to Nigerians?” Tinubu said.

The Senate has begun a fresh move to amend the Electoral Act 2010.

A new bill on the amendment is to be presented and passed for first reading today, according to the Order Paper for today’s plenary.

The House of Representatives had re-introduced the bill last week.

The first version of the bill, which was introduced in the House of Representatives, had been passed by the National Assembly but vetoed by President Muhammadu Buhari.

The bill had sought to reorder the sequence of polls during a general election, which generated controversy over the allegation that it was targeted at Buhari in the 2019 elections.

A 20-year-old student, Sultan Bello, was on Wednesday remanded in prison custody by a Kano Senior Magistrates’ Court for impersonating the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II.

The accused, who resides at Ja’oji New Court Road Quarters, Kano, is facing three counts of impersonation, cheating and defamation of character.

The Senior Magistrate, Hassan Ahmad, ordered the remand of the accused and adjourned the case until March 26 for summary trial.

The accused had pleaded guilty to the charge.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Inspector Haziel Ledapwa, told the court that the accused committed the offences on February 27.

Ledapwa said the defendant operated an Instagram page and dubiously posted himself as the Emir of Kano.

“The accused also demanded N1.4m from one Barka Sani; N150,000 from Sadiq Saflan; N50,000 from Sadiq Sani; N50,000 from Aisha Ahmad; N50,000 from Surajo Zakari; and N150,000 from Yahaya, totaling N1.85m.

He also told the court that the accused demanded the money on the pretext that one Hausa film actress, Zubaida Mu’azu, sang a song for him as the Emir of Kano.

“The accused requested the complainants to pay the said amount into the actress’ First Bank account number 3049986447,” he said.

According to the prosecutor, the offences contravene sections 132, 322 and 392 of the penal code.

PoliticsDate For Dino Melaye’s Recall Process Fixed By Kogi INEC by DONSMITH123(op): 2:12pm On Mar 21, 2018
The Kogi state Independent National Electoral Commission on Wednesday announced dates for the commencement of the recall process of the embattled Senator representing Kogi West, Dino Melaye.

The Resident Electoral Commissioner in the state, Prof. James Apam, said following the appeal court ruling that INEC can commence the recall process, the commission has fixed the last Saturday of April as the verification date.

INEC also fixed first Saturday in the month of May as the day that a referendum would be conducted in line with the electoral laws.

Apam spoke at a stakeholders’ forum on Wednesday in Lokoja.

He said, “On this day, the Commission will endeavour to invite all those who have signed the recall register to come forward and identify their signature.”

According to him, if this process is successful, the Commission will proceed to the next stage where a referendum of all registered voters would be conducted.

“Here, voters will be asked to vote either ‘yes’ or ‘no’ to the question of whether they want Senator Dino Melaye recalled.

“If the answer meets the constitutional requirements of 51 percent ‘yes,’ the process moves to the next stage; but if it fails, the process stops,” Apam explained.

Recall that the appeal court had, last week, thrown out Senator Dino Melaye’s suit challenging the move to recall him.

Recall also that the embattled Senator has vowed to proceed to the Supreme Court in the bid to stop INEC from proceeding with the process.

Apam said that as a law-abiding entity, INEC will not do anything outside the dictates of the law, noting, “that is why we have to wait till after the judgement before going ahead with the process.”

PoliticsIbrahim Idris Withdraws Policemen Attached To VIPs, Others by DONSMITH123(op): 3:19pm On Mar 19, 2018
Citing the security challenges facing the nation, the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, on Monday ordered the withdrawal of all police officers attached to Very Important Persons, including political and public office holders nationwide.

The police boss, who announced this in Abuja during a conference with senior officers, stated that the directive also affected private businessmen, multi-national companies and other corporate organizations who are enjoying special police protection.

To this end, Idris explained that a task force had been constituted at the Force headquarters under the command of ACP Mohammed Dankwara to ensure compliance to the directive while state commissioners of police are to replicate same at their commands.

Announcing his plans to withdraw the policemen on private guard duty, the IG said, “In view of the current security challenges in the country, it has become expedient for the Nigeria Police Force to streamline the deployment of its personnel attached to political and public office holders, aimed at enhancing effective and efficient policing of the country.

“To this effect, a memo will be forwarded to the President for approval which will serve as a guideline or template for deployment to VIPs, political and public office holders in the country. Accordingly, a directive for withdrawal of all police officers deployed to VIPs, political and public office holders with immediate effect, is hereby given,” he stated.

Idris, however, explained that businessmen, corporate organisations and individuals who required special police protection and “are found worthy,” would be considered by the Special Protection Unit of the force on application for re-validation through the state Commissioners of Police where they are resident.

“By so doing, I am charging the Commissioners of Police with the responsibility of supervising such official deployment and thereby holding them accountable,” the police chief informed his audience consisting of senior police officers.

The IG bemoaned the abuse of police Supernumerary number plates and the illegal use of siren and covering of vehicle number plates by motorists and warned the culprits to desist.

He directed the holders of the police SPY number plates to return them to the Force Transport Officer and apply for re-validation.

He also asked the state CPs to enforce the directive and arrest violators, adding that the list of task force teams that would ensure compliance to the order should be sent to the Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Operations, by March 31, 2018.

TravelEFCC Charges Bellview, First Nation Airlines With N1.7bn Fraud by DONSMITH123(op): 12:36pm On Mar 16, 2018
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Friday arraigned Bellview and First Nation airlines with an alleged fraud of N1.7bn.

Joined as the first defendant in the charge was the Managing Director of First Nation Airlines, Mr. Kayode Odukoya.

The airlines and Odukoya were arraigned on four counts before Justice Mojisola Dada of the Ikeja Special Offences Court.
The charges border on forgery, use of forged documents, perjury and stealing.

The EFCC, in the charges, alleged that the defendants forged the Memorandum of Loss of Lagos State Certificate of Occupancy registered as No. 33, at page 33, Volume 1011 at the Lagos State Land Registry, Alausa, Lagos.

According to the EFCC, the allegedly forged document was in respect of a property located at No. 29 Oduduwa Street, GRA, Ikeja.

The EFCC claimed that the defendants forged the document “in order that the document be acted upon as genuine.”
Odukoya was accused of dishonestly converting to his own a sum of N1.7bn belonging to Skye Bank Plc.

The prosecutor, Mr. M.S. Usman, told the court that the defendants acted contrary to sections 85, 86(1), 278(1)(b), 285, 361(1)(a)(b), 363 and 364(1) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2011.

But the defendants pleaded not guilty.

The judge ordered the remand of Odukoya in the custody of the EFCC.

She adjourned till March 26, 2018, to hear Odukoya’s bail application.

PoliticsWe Won’t Address Fayemi As ‘honorable Minister,’ Reps Vow by DONSMITH123(op): 4:43pm On Mar 15, 2018
The House of Representatives resolved on Thursday that having passed a vote of no confidence in the Minister of Mines and Steel Development, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, it would no longer accord him the recognition of addressing him as ‘honorable minister.”

The lawmakers also noted that in other climes, passing a vote of no confidence in a minister was enough grounds for the President to sack him, adding that the House did not need to stress it.

In a resolution in Abuja, the House observed that Fayemi’s decision to engage PricewaterhouseCoopers, a “globally discredited” firm, to conduct a technical audit on Ajaokuta Steel Company, meant that he was bent on concessioning the firm.

To stop Fayemi, the House proposed to amend the Privatisation Act immediately by expunging ASC from the list of public assets in the schedule that can be privatised or concessioned by the Federal Government.

It also sought to further amend the Act by removing the powers of the National Council on Privatisation as the authority to decide on which firms should be on the schedule.
