The Ondo State Chapter of the Labour Party (LP) Tuesday warned the state governor, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko against dividing the party. LP in a statement signed by its State Secretary, Mrs. Ronke Akerele said despite the governor’s defection to the PDP, he had always want to control the affairs of the party. Mimiko, who was the first elected governor of LP in 2009, left the party with his supporters in 2014 to the PDP. Besides, the party distanced itself from the April 23 local government election, saying they are not seeing members of the Ondo State Independent Electoral Commission (ODIEC) of conducting credible poll. The party warned that they would no longer tolerate any politicians, who is not a member of the party to speak on its behalf. The statement reads, “Our attention has been drawn to the plan of the Governor to keep parading fifth columnists as self-styled members of the party for selfish interest. “We hereby state clearly that anyone who is not known to our party cannot speak or represent our party in any capacity. “We also wish to inform the general public that Labour Party shall not participate in the council election. “The party appeals to the Governor to channel his energy to the task of governing the state at this critical period. “We shall rather engage the government in constructive criticism for the benefit of all, which we consider more important than petty issues of divisive politics that is fast becoming trademark. “We passionately appeal to the Governor to pay the salary arrears of the workers of Ondo State as soon as possible to reduce the untold hardship on the people.” http://dailypost.ng/2016/03/29/stop-dividing-our-party-against-creating-crisis-in-its-party-lp-tells-mimiko/

The United States, U.S yesterday revealed its intention to by this week get Nigeria to adopt a more flexible foreign exchange rate to boost growth and investment in the largest economy in Africa, Reuters reports. In a move that suggests pressing for devaluation of the Nigerian currency, the U.S Assistant Secretary of State for Africa, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, told an audience at the U.S. Institute of Peace that Nigeria should ensure that the value of the naira currency versus the American greenback was “more realistic.” According to her, “While most people complain about the possibility of there being a devaluation, people are already operating on a devalued currency, and the only people who are not, are people who are doing it officially. “Our recommendation is, and we will have discussions about it … that they should look at the exchange rate and try to make the exchange rate more realistic to what the value of the naira is to the dollar.” She spoke ahead of talks in Washington to be launched by Secretary of State John Kerry on Wednesday and which will focus on Nigeria’s economy, security and development. Noting that the parallel currency market in Nigeria was “alive and well,” Thomas-Greenfield warned that a rigid exchange rate, capital controls and import bans could undermine President Muhammadu Buhari’s efforts to expand economic growth and fight corruption. “Capital controls that limit access to foreign exchange rewards insiders and undermines the stated goals of Nigeria to increase domestic production because both Nigerian and expat investors alike tell us many businesses are unable to obtain the capital to purchase badly needed intermediate goods,” she stated. http://dailypost.ng/2016/03/29/u-s-to-pressurize-nigeria-on-naira-devaluation-this-week/

A mild drama occurred on Thursday morning at the Federal High Court in Abuja as armed policemen stormed the courtroom when the trial of a former Chief of Defence Staff, Alex Badeh was about to commence. DAILY POST gathered that presence of the armed policemen was informed by security threats against the judge. A source, who spoke to our correspondent on the ground of anonymity, said “The reason for the presence of heavily armed police men is as a result of security threats against the trial judge.” Justice Okon Abang, while responding to an enquiry by Badeh’s counsel, Akin Olujimi ordered the policemen to stay outside the courtroom saying, “their presence is a court issue.” Badeh is facing an 11-count charge of criminal breach of trust and corruption to the tune of N3.9bn leveled against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC. The EFCC had alleged that the former defence chief used funds of the Nigeria Air Force to purchase choice property in Abuja. According to the anti-graft agency, Badeh illegally used N60m to renovate his son’s house, which he purchased for N260m in Abuja between January and December 2013. The ex-defence chief is also alleged to have used N878m – being funds of the air force – to build a shopping mall in Abuja. http://dailypost.ng/2016/03/24/drama-as-armed-policemen-storm-courtroom-during-badehs-trial/

The Police Service Commission (PSC) on Wednesday announced that the process of the recruitment of 10,000 police men as directed by President Muhammadu Buhari at the National Security Summit last year in Abuja has commenced. A statement by the spokesman of Police Service Commission (PSC) Ikechukwu Ani said the Commission had on Tuesday, March 22nd in Abuja unveiled the internet website portal for the recruitment. Ani said the chairman of the Commission Mike Okiro who unveiled the portal at a ceremony attended by the management team of the Commission announced that the portal will be opened to the public on the 1st of April, 2016 which indicates the commencement of the recruitment exercise. Okiro said the unveiling of the portal was in actualization of the presidential directive on the recruitment of the 10,000 Police Men. He also said the Commission considers the exercise remarkable since there has not been recruitment into the Nigeria Police Force for more than five years due to financial constraints. He explained that the Commission could not commence the exercise last year because the funding was not captured in the 2015 budget. The PSC added that with the commencement of the process on April 1, interested Nigerians should access the portal through the Commission’s website: www.psc.gov.ng or that of the Nigeria Police Force, www.npf.gov.ng. The PSC Chairman also announced that there will be no charges for the processing of the forms which will be done on-line. Ani quoted the Chairman as saying: “we are not charging money. It is free, absolutely free.” He also reportedly noted that the portal has been structured in a way that there will be no short cut; “Everybody must go through due process”, he said. The Commission also said it will be recruiting candidates into the three entry points of the Nigeria Police Force which are Constable, Cadet Inspector and Cadet ASP. There will also be recruitment into the Specialist cadre, the PSC statement said. “For Police Constables, applicants are expected to posses five credit level passes including Mathematics and English Language at Senior School Certificate Examination in not more than two sittings,” Ani said. He added that for Cadet Inspectors, in addition to having the requirements of Police Constables, candidates would be expected to have an Ordinary National Diploma (OND), Advanced Level (A level), National Certificate of Education (NCE) or their equivalents. “Candidates for Cadet ASPs must possess a University degree or a Higher National Diploma (HND),” the Police Service Commission stated. The Indigenous People of Biafra, Ipob, a group agitating for the sovereign state of Biafra has boasted that at the end of the day, President Muhammadu Buhari and the Chief Army Staff, Lt.-Gen Tukur Yusuf Buratai will be jailed over several human rights abuses. The group in a statement signed by its Spokespersons, Barrister Emma Nmezu and Dr. Clifford Chukwuemeka Iroanya also berated the Defence Headquarters and President Buhari for inaugurating a committee that is expected to look into the various complaints on human rights abuses, saying such was a waste of the nation’s resources. The group said the same government and the military being accused of violating several rights cannot be investigating the same matter. Read full statement below: On Monday, the 21st of March 2016, the Nigerian Defence Headquarters represented by General Abayomi Olonisakin inaugurated what it called a 12-man committee on human rights. It is not clear if the Defence Headquarters is acting based on Section-5(1) CAP A20 L.F.N. 2004 or that General Olonisakin is trying to save the life and career of the never-retiring Lt.-Gen Tukur Yusuf Buratai who will end up at the prison yard, courtesy of the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague, just like his Commander-in-Chief, Retired Major General Muhammadu Buhari would soon go to jail as well in The Hague for human rights abuses and extra-judicial killings. During the inauguration of the so-called human rights committee, General Olonisakin noted that “each member of the committee was invited to look into the complaints of human rights abuses levelled against the military” and “urged the committee to expand their focus beyond the North East, to also include other areas of contention including the issues emanating from clashes with the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN), Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), and Rivers State election rerun amongst others.” General Olonisakin also stated that the Armed Forces of Nigeria is “always guided by global best practices, Rules of Engagement (ROE) for military operations other than war as well as Codes of Conduct for internal security operations.” On the other hand, he warned that the Armed Forces “would not sacrifice professionalism on the platter of lawlessness or extra-judicial conducts of anybody or groups.” The terms of reference of this committee include “collation and documentation of written complaints, as well as investigation of all the alleged rights violations, interface with human rights bodies, recommend appropriate sanctions where necessary and advice generally on modalities to curtail violations of human rights by troops.” It is very laughable that the so-called committee on human rights which was meant exclusively for the North-East of Nigeria was suddenly given the mandate to operate elsewhere in Nigeria as a face-saving measure to divert the attention of the public and the ICC from the upcoming criminal prosecution of Lt-Gen Buratai, Muhammadu Buhari, Solomon Ehigiator Arase, and other accomplices to the massacre of defenceless Biafrans which started seven weeks after the swearing-in of Buhari as Nigeria’s president. Is it possible for General Olonisakin to point at any report in the public domain from any committee that was set up to probe any of the killings in Biafraland? In 2013, some committees were set up by the Senate and the NBA to investigate the mass murder of Biafrans and dumping of their bodies in Ezzu River but the committees‘ reports were never made public. Even former Governor Peter Obi’s Ezzu River Autopsy Report is still hidden in government house at Awka. On the other hand, how can the military be investigating crimes committed by itself and expect to get useful outcomes, in addition to the fact that this committee is not headed by a reputable Judge but rather the committee is mainly an assortment of retired and retarded members of Nigerian military? How can a murderer investigate his own crime? This is another waste of public funds in a country where the average citizen lives on less than half-dollar in a day. Instead of spending so much money on logistics and other related expenses on this committee, we STRONGLY advice the Defence Headquarters to use this money to hire a formidable defence attorney who will defend them at the upcoming court case at the ICC. Perhaps, the attorney may be able to reduce by a few years, the imminent long jail terms for Buratai et al. Therefore the public should not be deceived by the red-herring strategy of General Olonisakin and his cohorts because Buratai and his co-murderers are prison-bound irrespective of the so-called committee on human rights. This committee is nothing but a deceit and a charade!!! Signed Barrister Emma Nmezu Dr. Clifford Chukwuemeka Iroanya Spokesperson for IPOB Spokesperson for IPOB http://dailypost.ng/2016/03/23/buhari-buratai-will-end-up-in-jail-for-killing-biafra-agitators-ipob/

Justice Abdul Kafarati of the Federal High Court in Abuja has disqualified himself from a fundamental rights enforcement suit filed by the Senate President, Bukola Saraki to quash the assets falsification charges brought against him by the federal government at the Code of Conduct Tribunal, CCT. Kafarati, who had fixed Tuesday for delivery of judgment on the suit, rather announced his withdrawal from the case on the basis that his integrity had been called to question in the matter. Following an online news report which accused him of corruption to the tune of N2bn, the judge held that if he ruled against or for Saraki, his decision would be interpreted differently. He therefore requested the Chief Judge of the court to reassign the case to another judge. According to him, “It is only in this country that people can wake up and start calling people names. “In the circumstance, I disqualify myself from this case. I will hereby send the case file to the chief judge for re-assignment to another judge.” It would be recalled that shortly after the judgment of the Supreme Court dismissing Saraki’s appeal to stop his trial, his lawyer, Ajibola Oloyede last month filed the lawsuit asking the Federal High Court to stop the Senate President’s trial and to disqualify the chairman of the CCT, who is presiding over the trial. Saraki argued that his rights to fair hearing was violated by the Code of Conduct Bureau, CCB, which he said failed to invite him for explanation before it filed charges against him at the tribunal. Ekiti State Governor, Mr. Ayodele Fayose, on Monday said any attempt by President Muhammadu Buhari to declare a state of emergency in Ekiti or Rivers State would be resisted. Fayose spoke with State House correspondents shortly after taking part in the economic retreat organised by the National Economic Council inside the old Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa, Abuja. The governor said he was aware that Buhari was planning a state of emergency in Rivers State over the bloody election rerun that took place in the state over the weekend. He said he was also aware that the President had the same plan in stock for the people of Ekiti State. However he said if he went ahead with the plan, Buhari would be thought a lesson that power belongs to the people and not their leaders. He said, “They have been insinuating that (state of emergency) too in Ekiti. We have been waiting for them. Power has gone beyond the leaders; power has gone back to the people. “You want to declare state of emergency, declare it and we will tell you that the state of emergency will not work too. This country belongs to all of us.” Fayose criticised what he called the militarisation of the Rivers rerun. He insisted that the military has no business in electoral matters. He urged Buhari to sustain the legacy of free and fair elections which his administration inherited. “The military has got no business in our election. “If you watch the trend, PDP has always won all the elections after the annulment. Which means what happened in Rivers is just a service of ego of some individuals who believe they have Nigeria in their pockets and they can call the President at will to deploy the military. “It is unfortunate that somebody would allow the military to kill his own people. “I strongly condemn the elections in Rivers and charge that we sustain he legacy of transparent elections. “For me in Ekiti, we learned from that and we are prepared. We prepare for election every day and we are fully prepared,” he added. Fayose also said the Ekiti lawmakers currently being detained by agents of the Department of State Services had further confirmed what he described as the rascality of the agency of government. He said it was unfortunate that the Federal Government would decide to look away and allow innocent Nigerians’ rights to be trampled upon. http://www.punchng.com/2016/03/21/fayose-dares-buhari-says-state-of-emergency-wont-work-in-ekiti-rivers/
