There are indications that there is serious tension in the Kogi State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress, APC, as the party prepares for its governorship primary election slated for Lokoja Township Stadium, Lokoja, on Saturday, the 29th of August, as speculations are rife that notable chieftains of the party are pressure on some aspirants to step down. The Kogi State governorship election comes up on November 21, 2015. According to sources in the party, chieftains of the party, who feel the current number of aspirants, put at 28 is unhealthy for the party and may lead to crisis in the aftermath of the primaries, are appealing to some aspirants, considered as lightweights and others believed to be capable of playing the spoiler to step down. A source in the party confided in DAILY POST that the National Leader of the APC, Asiwaju Ahmed Bola Tinubu, alongside others have been making frantic efforts to ensure that the number of aspirants is pruned down to a manageable seven for a healthy primary election. “Asiwaju Tinubu has been in Abuja since yesterday trying to see how to get some of the candidates to step down from the race. Having 28 aspirants for a single slot is considered unhealthy for a party that is trying to dislodge an incumbent Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, governor in the state and it believed that everything has to be done to ensure that sanity is maintained”, the source said. Asked why the party did not reduce the number during its screening exercise, the source said: “It would been arbitrary to do so since those certified were qualified to stand for election. The party can only disqualify a candidate if he is not qualified. Besides, doing so would have compounded the problem as those arbitrarily disqualified may turn around to work against the party out of anger. “What is been done at the moment is a subtle appeal for some of the aspirants to step down. It is not an order but an appeal to common sense and in the overall interest of the party. Nobody will be forced to step down; it is not compulsory, but what the leaders are doing is to make sure things are done in a healthy manner,” he said. To buttress the speculation that last minute clandestine meetings were ongoing to prune down the number of aspirants, none of the aspirants for Saturdays Primaries is in the state capital yet, as they are said to be held back in Abuja to attend to some important meetings. Those contacted on the telephone by DAILY POST confirmed that they are still in Abuja and may arrive the state capital later Thursday night or Friday morning. Also a visit to the Party’s secretariat near the Local Government secretariat in Lokoja shows that all may not be well as the secretariat looks more like a ghost town, with only a couple of low level staff seen milling around the almost empty car park. One of the staff at the secretariat confided in DAILY POST that the state Chairman and Secretary of the party were out to attend to some important engagements. He however declined to confirm if they were away in Abuja for the alleged last minute meetings. http://dailypost.ng/2015/08/27/kogi-guber-anxiety-as-apc-chieftains-pressure-aspirants-to-step-down-ahead-of-primaries/

The 24-year-old grandson of Winnie and Nelson Mandela, former South African President, who appeared in the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court over an alleged rape of a 15-year-old girl in August 7 at a popular restaurant in Greenside, South Africa, has been granted bail. It will be recalled that the accused was arrested on Friday, 14th August. The accused had earlier admitted in court last week that he did have sex with the said girl but was consensual, even as he believed the girl was older than 16. He claimed he sat on a chair while the girl straddled him during sex. News24 reports that the statement by a key witness, Goola Singh, a chef at the restaurant where the alleged rape took place, claimed to have seen the grandson of Nelson Mandela and his teenage rape accuser kissing passionately. The chef according to the report was instrumental to his release on bail. The court set the bail between R5 and R10000 because he was unemployed, and had two children, and expecting a third child. The accused’s lawyer, Marinda Velsman, told the court that his client, Mandela’s grandson, didn’t want to be tried as a Mandela but he wants to be tried as a normal person. Marinda handed in an affidavit by Goola Singh, employed as a chef at the restaurant where the alleged rape took place. Goola said he saw the accused and the girl kissing passionately in a passage. “I noticed nothing untoward between the man and the woman outside my window. They seemed very comfortable with each other. If there had been noises of a struggle I would have heard,” Goola’s affidavit reads. The complainant, however, said the accused allegedly kissed her forcefully, put his hands in her pants, threw her on the floor and raped her. She said she was screaming at the time. The suspect’s lawyer argued that his client had no way of knowing the girl was underage as the restaurant had a policy barring anyone younger than 21. He claimed the complainant was drinking alcohol and smoking with her friends. Therefore, these were some reasons he believed her to be of the age of consent. The defense disputed the girl’s age and claimed a birth certificate handed in to the court was not hers. Marinda referred to accounts on social media sites; Facebook and Twitter, said to be maintained by the complainant that appeared to show her to be older than 16. The accused was granted bail at R7000. http://dailypost.ng/2015/08/27/mandelas-grandson-accused-of-rape-granted-bail/

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Working Committee (NWC) on Wednesday in Abuja inaugurated a committee to conduct a nationwide biometric registration of all members of the party. Inaugurating the committee members, the PDP acting National Chairman, Prince Uche Secondus urged the members to make the registration process transparent and marketable to Nigerians. “We believe that for us to succeed in our objective of rebuilding the party, we must be courageous enough to implement the e-membership registration of our party members. “Everybody agrees that this is imperative for any organisation that wants to run effectively in the Information Technology driven world we find ourselves. “It is obvious that this is the only single thing that will empower the grassroots politicians through a viable internal democracy in the subsequent operations of the party,” Secondus said. He said that with the online registration, every member of the party now had equal right to vote and be voted for. “Gone are the days that the PDP belonged to the high and the mighty, the party now belongs to the common people,” he said. Secondus charged the committee members to work with the consultant, e-collect Technologies Ltd. and the states party chairmen that would further coordinate the state chapters for the effective implementation of the system. According to him, the committee has six months within which they are expected to go round the entire country and duly register all party members in accordance with the dictates of the party. Responding, the Chairman of the committee, Chief Raymond Dokpesi, who is also the Chairman of Daar Communications assured the party of the committee’s readiness to register all members nationwide. Dokpesi said that the committee would immediately swing into action to attain the task given to them within the stipulated time. While the PDP BoT Secretary, Sen. Wali Jubrin, was to serve as the committee secretary, it members include governors of Gombe, Ibrahim Dankwambo and that of Ekiti state, Ayodele Fayose. Six national vice chairmen of the party were also among the committee members. Other members include Sen. Godswill Akpabio and Mr Loe Ogor, Senate Minority Leader and the House of Representative Minority leader respectively, among others. There was confusion at the Mobile Police Force 20, in the Ikeja area of Lagos, Tuesday, after a police inspector, whose identity was given as Medugwu, mistakenly shot himself dead, while trying to fix a faulty rifle. It was gathered that the inspector, who was attached to MOPOL 20, was until his demise the second-in-command to the armourer. He was said to have accidentally pulled the trigger of the rifle, which sent a bullet to his jaw. It was learnt that he collected the rifle, and tried to find out its fault but it fired in the process. Other policemen in the area were said to have rushed to the scene and taken Medugwu to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja. The inspector, however, died at about 1pm in the hospital. An eyewitness told newsmen that the inspector died as a result of severe injuries sustained from the gunshot. He said, “He was the second-in-command at the armoury in the MOPOL 20. A policeman brought a faulty rifle to his office to examine. While he was doing that, he turned the barrel of the gun on himself, and mistakenly pulled the trigger. “We rushed him to LASUTH, where the medical personnel battled to save his life. But, he died at about 1pm. His head was badly injured. Medugwu’s death shook all of us.” The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Patricia Amadin, confirmed the death of Medugwu. http://dailypost.ng/2015/08/27/police-inspector-kills-self-while-fixing-faulty-rifle-in-lagos/ |

Reports reaching DAILY POST reveal that a corpse is at the moment lying abandoned by the road side in Abuja. DAILY POST reports that the dead body of an unidentified young man was abandoned around CITEC Pedestrian Bridge, in-between Gwarimpa and Galadima bus stops. DAILY POST could not ascertain the cause of death as at press time, however, those around the scene suspect that it may have been caused by a hit-and-run driver or an armed robbery attack.
