The governor of Imo State, Owelle Rochas Okorocha, has disclosed that his ultimate desire is to unite the governors and leaders of the South East to work with the President Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government. Okorocha stated this on Monday while addressing newsmen at the Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport, SMICA, Owerri, on his arrival from Abuja. “As the only APC governor in the South East, I cannot do it alone and I cannot also play the attendant politics of establishing a very strong relationship between the South East governors and the APC-led Federal Government alone. Hence, every governor and leader in the South East must be carried along in the whole thing,” Okorocha said. Okorocha, who disclosed that the South East governors were able to have an audience with President Buhari while in Abuja, said it was more than even reassuring that the South East people would work totally with the present administration at the federal level. “We, the governors of the South East and indeed, the leaders from the area, are all determined to work with the President and the President himself is also more determined to work with the South East,” Okorocha said. “We have been assured that the South East would not be left out of the whole political and economic equations of Nigeria,” Okorocha said. http://dailypost.ng/2015/08/25/i-want-to-unite-south-east-leaders-with-buhari-okorocha/

The probe panel set-up to investigate the immediate past administration of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi has said it is not out to witch-hunt anyone. Chairman of the committee, Justice George Omereji said this during his inaugural address to declare the sitting open. Justice Omereji said the commission would give room for fair hearing to all parties, adding that all parties had the liberty to contract the services of any legal representative of their choice. While highlighting the terms of reference of the committee, Justice Omereji said the Judicial Commission of enquiry would among other things, investigate the sale of the valued assets of Rivers State. He said, “I must state here that the Commission is a fact finding body and not a court of Law. It is not on a witch hunting mission and its activities would be strictly based on the memoranda submitted by the parties. “The Commission shall uphold the principle of fair hearing, give adequate and equal opportunities to all concerned persons to state their cases and tender relevant documents that shall assist the commission.” DAILY POST reports that the former Commissioner for Agriculture, Emma Chinda, who was invited to offer explanations on four billion naira agricultural loan failed to honour the invitation. However, the Permanent Secretary of the Rivers state Ministry of Agriculture, Sotonye Atari-Okoye said the immediate past governor of the state, Rotimi Amaechi approved the sum of three billion naira for the Agricultural credit scheme and not four billion naira as widely speculated. Atari Okoye made the disclosure during her cross examination by the probe panel. She said an excess of N2.9 million was disbursed to different co-operative societies as approved by the former commissioner for Agriculture, Emma Chinda. Also, the Director of Planning, Research and Statistics in the Ministry of Agric, Chijioke Amadi who appeared before the panel said more than two thousand co-operative and agro-allied societies benefitted from the grant. Amadi who was also the Chairman of the Agric credit committee told the panel that the selection of the beneficiaries were done at the discretion of the then commissioner. The Permanent Secretary of the state Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Cordelia Morris-Peterside was also cross examined over issues of the registration of the co-operative societies that benefitted from the said N4 billion agricultural grant. The commission in its memo had discovered that most of the co-operative societies that benefitted from the grant were linked to former Local government Chairmen of the 23 local government areas of the state. Counsel to the Commission, Zacheus Adangor, asked the panel to give an order to mandate the former Commissioner, Emma Chinda to appear before it. http://dailypost.ng/2015/08/25/panel-to-probe-amaechi-begins-sitting-in-port-harcourt/

Erstwhile Special Adviser to former President Goodluck Jonathan on Media and Publicity, Mr. Reuben Abati has claimed that the fact that the former President lost the March 28 election with about 2.5 million votes means that a large number of Nigerians actually believed in him and in the ability and capability of his administration to move Nigeria forward. Abati, who was speaking during a recent interview with Rockcity 101.9 FM, Abeokuta, Ogun State, explained that what happened during the last election was a play out of democracy which allows people the right to make a choice and when that choice is made, it has to be respected. Describing Jonathan as one very committed person to the Nigerian project, he said: “If you look at the results of the elections, you’ll see that he lost the elections with about 2.5 million votes or thereabout, which means that a large number of Nigerians still believed in him and also believed in his ability and his capability of his administration to move Nigeria forward. We were dealing with a democracy; the people have a right to make a choice, when the people make a choice, we respect that choice. “And our commitment as Nigerians, whoever we may be, whatever maybe our situation, is to remain committed to Nigeria, and to support whoever has emerged and to respect the choice and the decision of Nigerians,” he stated. The former presidential spokesman also tried to debunk the widely held perception that former President, Goodluck Jonathan was usually hooked on alcohol during the twilight of his administration, stressing that Jonathan does not drink as that was merely one of the myths about the immediate past administration. Noting that Nigerians will always remember the former President as a very humble man, Abati said: “President Jonathan does not drink. You see, that’s one of the myths about that administration and you must understand how this thing is, it’s all about perception, communication, it’s all about what goes out and it’s about stereotyping. People just stereotype people from a particular part of the country as drunkards, and they look for justification for one type of behaviour or the other. “But I can tell you that in my four years of working for President Jonathan, I never found him in a bibulous situation. If he ever tasted any drink, maybe a glass of wine during special occasions. All those stories about him drinking, about President Jonathan always being berated, about bibulous situations inside the Villa, those things did not exist. “This is not about witch-hunt, it’s not about criticizing people, the Nigerian people have spoken and we stand by the decision of the Nigerian people. And we all support whoever is there to move Nigeria forward. So this backward looking, can we just look forward? Can we all just work together to move Nigeria forward? For me, that is where the emphasis should be, because we are all Nigerians and at the end of the day the country is more important than all of us,” he stated http://dailypost.ng/2015/08/24/for-jonathan-to-have-lost-with-2-5m-votes-shows-people-still-believed-in-him-abati/
