A former President of the Christian Association of Nigeria, Anthony Cardinal Okogie, has disclosed how some monarchs from the SouthWest region deceived former president Goodluck Jonathan during the 2015 presidential election campaigns. Speaking with Punch recently, the cleric said “Did you see the photograph I saw; you saw him in the midst of obas; you saw the way they pointed their sticks (at him). If you are a Yoruba man, do they (monarchs) pray with that kind of thing? No way! ‘You want prayer? We will give you prayer’”. According to him, religious leaders should be blamed for the role they played in Jonathan’s defeat, saying they didn’t warn him of what lied ahead of him like he (Okogie) did. “This means they were deceptive. I am not ready to do that kind of thing. If it is the last bullet, I will rather die and meet my God. This is one thing that is wrong with this nation: we have many people that are ready to do anything because of money. They don’t think about their neighbour”. http://dailypost.ng/2015/08/17/yoruba-traditional-rulers-deceived-jonathan-during-election-cardinal-okogie/

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has described as reckless, irresponsible and highly provocative, a statement by the All Progressives Congress, wherein the party “bandied imaginary figures against the previous administration to suit a heinous purpose”. APC had in a statement issued in Lagos at the weekend by its National Publicity Secretary, Lai Mohammed, accused the government of former President Goodluck Jonathan of looting trillions. Reacting Sunday night, PDP National Publicity Secretary, Olisa Metuh, said the APC had again exhibited its emptiness and disgusting desperation for public approval. The PDP said “in trying to escalate their stock-in-trade of lies, wild allegations and falsehood, the APC failed to understand that their baseless fabrications are capable of throwing an unsuspecting nation into chaos”. Stating that “the spate of fabrications by Lai Mohammed has become a sickening source of worry for well-meaning Nigerians, including those in his party”, the PDP called on President Muhammadu Buhari and the APC as a party, to call their spokesman to order before he plunges the country into crisis with wild and unsubstantiated claims. The PDP said instead of engaging in unnecessary playing to the gallery, the APC-led government should get serious with the fight against corruption by investigating and prosecuting corrupt persons, while moving on with the demands of governance, especially in fulfilling their numerous campaign promises for which they were voted into office at the centre. http://dailypost.ng/2015/08/17/caution-lai-mohammed-before-he-plunges-nigeria-into-crisis-pdp-tells-buhari-apc/

The South South headquarters of the All Progressives Congress [APC] has frowned at last Wednesday’s harassment and tear gassing of some of its chieftain and candidates from Rivers State stating that the development was draconian and therefore unacceptable. The party also demanded an apology from the police personnel or be sanctioned by the police authorities to serve as a deterrent to others who may want to continue in that stead. National Vice Chairman, South South of the party, Prince Hilliard Eta, in a statement issued by his media aide, Bassey Ita, said the party will not accept such overzealous and draconian tendencies by security personnel, especially now that the new dispensation has declared an intolerable position against corruption and lawlessness of whatever dimension. The statement reads in part; ‘’The South South office of the All Progressives Congress[APC] considers as draconian and coming from overzealous minds, last Wednesday’s visit of assault occasioned by the tear-gassing of some very revered and responsible party leaders and candidates from Rivers State who were at the INEC headquarters to albeit peacefully launch a protest against the heavily compromised and dissident Resident Electoral Commissioner[REC] for Rivers State, Mrs. Gesila Khan, who has defied orders of a constitutionally mandated court to produce electoral materials to the APC candidates to aid the quick dispensation of justice, following petitions arising from the abysmal conduct of the general elections of March 28 and April 11 in Rivers State this year.” According to the statement, Etta said “much as the APC government at the centre has indicated its commitment to the rule of law and of due process in all public engagements, as a party, we are completely averse to such show of overzealousness by our security operatives who are naturally supposed to be protecting lives and properties of Nigerians’’ ‘’It is already public knowledge that the personnel would feign protection of the INEC headquarters in the face of alleged looming danger occasioned by the peaceful protest, but pointedly, they forget that the party leaders have at various times held positions of responsibility and have a rich reputation that their involvement in violence would never be contemplated. Armed with this reality, it becomes expedient to state that the security operatives only rushed into a conclusion that was driven by overzealousness and which is far away from the story of protecting the INEC office.’’ The party demanded an apology from the security operatives to their unsuspecting victims while also urging the Police High Command to ensure that the affected personnel yield to the party’s demand or be sanctioned accordingly. It also urged the INEC Acting Chairman, Mrs. Amina Zakari, to further assert her authority as the head of the electoral body by ordering the REC to respect court decisions, especially as it pertains to the ongoing litigations over the polls in Rivers State. The statement, which observed that such fragrant violation of court orders by supposed impartial personnel like INEC officials, was a dangerous precedent for our democracy, called on judges to be more drastic in enforcing their orders on litigants so as to guarantee the protection of the electoral rights and values of Nigerians. http://dailypost.ng/2015/08/14/apc-frowns-at-police-teargassing-peterside-others-at-inecs-office-demands-apology/

The Youth Wing of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo has kicked against any move by Nigeria to support the FIFA presidency bid of former Abia Governor, Chief Orji Uzor Kalu. In a statement made available to DAILY POST, which was signed by Chetachi Ikpe, Deputy chairman, Ohanaeze Youth Wing, Abia State, the group alleged that Kalu was a candidate of prison and not FIFA. The statement read in part: “it is with rude shock that Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Wing read in a newspaper over the purported endorsement of Orji Uzor Kalu as the next FIFA President. “We are aware that FIFA, as the World governing body in charge of Football, it is only men of proven integrity that can only manage its affairs not people like Orji Uzor Kalu. “Orji Uzor Kalu topped the list of corrupt politicians that Ohanaeze Youths sent to President Buhari for Speedy prosecution over the embezzlement of resources of Abia State, between 1999-2007, and should be in Prison not FIFA. “The recent purported endorsement of Orji Uzor Kalu by Ohanaeze Youths is not true as the apex Igbo youths want Orji kalu in prisons, which automatically disqualifies him to contest for FIFA Presidency”. http://dailypost.ng/2015/08/14/orji-uzor-kalu-should-be-in-prison-not-fifa-ohanaeze/

The Association of African Traditional Religion, Nigeria and Overseas (AATREN), on Thursday said that contrary to public perceptions, its members don’t indulge in ritual killings. Mr Ifasegun Elegushi, the President of the association, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that the public should, therefore, not always attribute ritual killings to his members. “We are not responsible for ritual killings, we are traditionalists ,’’ he said. Elegushi said that those who indulged in ritual killings were ungodly people but traditionalists were people who believed in propagating the African Traditional Religion (ATR). Also, Mr Lekan Ajirotutu, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of AATREN, condemned the assertion that its members used to engage in ritual killings. “Herbalists could be anybody, irrespective of religious belief,’’ he said Ajirotutu said that the Nigerian Constitution allows every Nigerian to hold different religious beliefs and practices same. According to him, the Nigerian Constitution recognizes: Islam, Christianity and the ATR. “The ATR is the way of life of our predecessors, before the advent of the two other religions. “Therefore, no religion should be condemned at the expense of the other. Everybody should be allowed to practise his or her own religious beliefs in a free atmosphere’’, Ajirotutu said. Similarly, Mrs Folusho Adeogun-Oga, the Vice-President of the Association urged believers of the three religions to continue practising their faiths for the development of all ,instead of condemning one another. “We are comfortable with our traditional religion, we call on our creator and he has been answering us, so why the condemnation’’, Adeogun-Oga said. The Secretary-General of the Association, Mr Awodiran Agboola, urged the three tiers of government to intervene in stopping what he called the campaign of calumny against the traditional religion. Agboola said that it was disheartening that people were no longer free to practise their religion without being condemned using the media. “Despite the condemnation of the ATR, people still embrace and practise it on daily basis,’’ Agboola said. http://dailypost.ng/2015/08/13/we-are-not-ritual-killers-african-religions-practitioners/

The Governor of Osun State, Rauf Aregbesola, on Wednesday revealed the content of a text message the late Ooni of Ife, Oba Okunade Sijuwade, sent to him before he passed away. “His Excellence, I am still not feeling good, So I am travelling abroad for medical check up of my body therefore I place your government under God’s guidance,” Mr. Aregbesola made this known in Osogbo on Wednesday at a press conference where members of the family of the late monarch and his traditional council members officially announced his passing away. The governor had disclosed last Friday that he received a text message from the monarch shortly before he left the country and would share the contents with the public as soon as it was convenient. “The late Ooni represented the Yoruba nation and has done a lot in uplifting the traditional institution of the state,” Mr. Aregbesola said. He added that the death of the Ooni was a great loss to the state and the Yoruba race but noted that the “king is not dead” because people do not say the king is dead in Yorubaland. According to the monarch’s son, Adetokunbo Sijuwade, the remains of the Ooni of Ife, Oba Okunade Sijuwade, will finally be laid to rest on Friday, August 14 at 10am. Mr. Sijuade said his father’s body would be flown in from London on Thursday. Obalufe of Iremo, who is also the Vice Chairman of the Ife Traditional Council, Solomon Omisakin, and the Lowa Of Ile-Ife, Joseph Ijaodola, both affirmed the burial date of the Ooni at the press conference. They also said they were happy with the life led by the late Ooni and praised his legacies. While thanking the people of Osun State for their support for the late Ooni, they prayed God to help them get a better traditional ruler who would achieve better things for his people. http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/top-news/188298-aregbesola-reveals-content-of-oonis-last-text-message.html

Some members of the All Progressives Congress from Rivers on Wednesday staged a protest at the headquarters of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Abuja. The protesters were led by the governorship candidate of the party in the last election, Dakuku Peterside. Peterside said they were protesting against the refusal of the Resident Electoral Commissioner in Rivers, Mrs Gesila Khan, to release election materials for inspection in accordance with the ruling of tribunal. Peterside wondered why the commissioner refused to comply with the order of the tribunal, adding that the 180 days for adjudication of electoral matters was fast approaching. He said the commissioner claimed that she was working under the instruction of INEC headquarters. Some other protesters included Sen. Magnus Abe, Andrew Uchendu, Otelemaba Amachree, Chidi Julius Lloyd, and Victor Amadi among others. The state Chairman of APC, Denis Ikanya was also one of the leaders of the protest. The protest, however, took a twist as security operatives fired canisters at them following their refusal to nominate three candidates to meet with the INEC’s Acting Chairman, Amina Zakari. The Deputy Director of Security of INEC, Mr. Victor Egbun, told the protesters to nominate three persons to represent them at the meeting with INEC. He said that that was the standard procedure at the commission. NAN http://dailypost.ng/2015/08/13/apcs-peterside-leads-protests-at-inec-office-in-abuja/
