PoliticsYoruba Monarchs Did Not Deceive Jonathan – PDP Replies Okogie by DONSMITH123(op): 8:53am On Aug 24, 2015
The Peoples Democratic Party has replied a former President of the Christian Association of Nigeria, Cardinal Anthony Okogie, over his comment that Yoruba monarchs deceived former President Goodluck Jonathan during the election.

The party was reacting to a recent interview granted to a national daily by Okogie, where he said the picture of Jonathan squatting in the midst of some Yoruba traditional rulers, who were pointing sticks at him, was deceptive.

He had said, “Did you see the photograph I saw; you saw him in the midst of Obas; you saw the way they pointed their sticks (at him). If you are a Yoruba man, do they (monarchs) pray with that kind of thing? No way! ‘You want prayer? We will give you prayer.’ This means they were deceptive.”

Reacting to the statement, the Publicity Secretary of the PDP in Lagos State, Mr. Taofik Gani, flayed the cleric, describing the accusation as a deliberate attempt to embarrass the person of Jonathan and his party.

Gani noted that it would have been a disrespect to the monarchs if Jonathan had visited their domains without paying a courtesy visit on the royal fathers.

“With due regard to Cardinal Okogie, it may be coincidental that he is a progressive but a hidden politician in religion, who believes that the people in the APC are progressives. But I want to say without any iota of contradiction that it has always been convenient for Cardinal Okogie to support the APC and we know all these people. We also have them in the PDP who support us.

“So, we wouldn’t blame Cardinal Okogie. We have professionals, activists, religious leaders, who are also sympathetic to the PDP cause. What Okogie said, therefore, was deliberate; just to embarrass the PDP and the former President. The royal fathers have their traditional role which is not to have anybody as beloved. Everybody in their dynasty is regarded as their subjects.

“That Jonathan accorded them that regard of being royal fathers and that he consequently got their blessings was not wrong of the ex-President. On the contrary, they (the APC) were malicious against some royal fathers, which the PDP cautioned against.”

The PDP spokesperson further noted that President Muhammadu Buhari had also visited some royal fathers.

The party, therefore, queried Okogie for not criticising the Oba of Lagos, Oba Rilwan Akiolu, for supporting a candidate of the APC during the last governorship election in Lagos State.

“We know the role the Oba of Lagos played. Is Cardinal Okogie oblivious of that fact? Why didn’t he generalise that all the Obas misled all the politicians? In fact, the xenophobic statement made by the Oba of Lagos could have destroyed the country.

“It is now the same xenophobia that the APC is quick to impose on our leader, Bode George. But it was the APC who influenced the verbal attacks through the Oba of Lagos, who was an obvious member of the APC by his actions.

“Cardinal Okogie should please maintain his role as a religious leader. He is someone who is respected; he should be wary of coming into the murky waters of politics. What has happened has happened,” Gani told Punch.

PoliticsThe Worst Of Fayemi Is Better Than Fayose’s Best – Former Ekiti Speaker by DONSMITH123(op): 8:19am On Aug 24, 2015
Former factional Speaker of Ekiti State House of Assembly, Hon. Dele Olugbemi has warned Governor Ayo Fayose against “adopting use and dump tactics” as one of his styles as a politician.

Olugbemi, who snubbed his appointment by Fayose as a member of the House of Assembly Service Commission (HASC) last week, lamented that Fayose did not appreciate the sacrifices he made to keep him in office as governor.

He said having worked with both former Governor Kayode Fayemi and Fayose, “the two of them are incomparable”.

“The worst of Fayemi is better than the best of Fayose,” he said.

According to him, the appointment was based on principle and to send a message that “the era of sole administratorship has become outlandish and democratic ethos must be imbibed in the running of government”.

Olugbemi spoke with reporters at the weekend on the heels of the controversy generated by his rejection of the appointment and shunning of the screening and confirmation of the nominees by the state lawmakers last week.

The ex-factional Speaker vowed to challenge what he called “any undemocratic tendency of Fayose through strong and constructive engagement”.

He listed some politicians allegedly betrayed by Fayose after benefiting from them to include former President Olusegun Obasanjo, former Osun State Governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola, Osun PDP governorship candidate Senator Iyiola Omisore, former Ekiti Assembly Speaker Femi Bamisile, former Ekiti PDP Secretary, Tope Aluko and House of Assembly candidate Odunayo Talabi.

The committee was chaired by Senator Clement Awoyelu with former Attorney General, Obafemi Adewale, as secretary.

Olugbemi added that he and other eminent key party chiefs were members.

Olugbemi said it was this alleged action of Fayose that prompted his decision to reject the appointment to prove that “Nigeria still has men of principles in its political space.”

CrimeNelson Mandela’s Grandson Arrested For Raping 15-year-old Girl by DONSMITH123(op): 11:25am On Aug 18, 2015
24-year-old grandson of Winnie and Nelson Mandela, former South African President, has appeared in the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court over an alleged rape of a 15-year- old girl at a popular restaurant in Greenside, South Africa.

The accused was arrested on Friday, 14th August and can’t be named for legal reasons, until he pleads guilty to the allegation leveled against him.

Reports, according to the girl’s family spokesperson who confirmed the incident, say the victim went to use the rest room in a restaurant and the boy grabbed and raped her inside one of the toilets.

“Just because they have a famous surname, they think they can get away with crime. Children can’t just be raped and then everything is alright. The girl is young and doesn’t even drink,” the spokesperson added.

The victim’s spokesperson went further to say the boy’s grandmother’s bodyguard intimidated the father of the rape victim when he initially tried to file a criminal charge against him.

“Instead, the bodyguard went to the family pretending to be a cop. The father was told there was no need to arrest the suspect but when the father asked to see his badge, he didn’t have one. It turned out he had been sent by Winnie.

“Meanwhile, Winnie Mandela promised to hand him over to the police.

“She also said she will call a press conference. None of the promises has been so far kept,” the spokesperson noted.

Gauteng Police Spokesman, Brigadier Mashadi Selepe, said they were investigating the case .

PoliticsBenue South Tribunal: David Mark In Court, Refuses To Enter Witness Box by DONSMITH123(op): 11:06am On Aug 18, 2015
Report reaching DAILY POST from Makurdi, the Benue State capital has it that former Senate President, David Mark finally appeared in court in person to defend his fifth term victory against his opponent, Daniel Onjeh of the All Progressives Congress.

However, the embattled senator refused to testify from the witness box.

Mark was dragged to the tribunal by his only contender, Onjeh over his declaration by INEC as the winner of the Benue South Senatorial election.Onjeh had argued that the elections were marred by several irregularities and substantial breaches of the Electoral Act 2011 as amended.

He also averred that INEC officials were compromised and voters were financially induced by the PDP agents at the various polling units in the district.

The petitioner, therefore, urged the court to nullify the election and order for fresh poll.

Mark’s Counsel, Mr Kenneth Ikonne, had told the tribunal that his client would be appearing in person to testify today.

However, Mark who arrived in court in company of some loyalists on Tuesday refused to enter the witness box to defend his victory.

More to come…

PoliticsJonathan’s Lootings Forced Me To Secure $75m Loan From World Bank – Oshiomole by DONSMITH123(op): 9:17am On Aug 18, 2015
Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State has explained why his government secured a loan of $75million from the World Bank.

He claimed that the former president, Goodluck Jonathan looted so much that there was nothing left in the nation’s treasury.

Speaking with state house correspondents recently, the governor said he was happy over President Muhammadu Buhari’s emergence, which he believed had transformed the country and states’ fortunes.

In a lengthy discussion with the newsmen, the former NLC president said: “If the PDP did not steal the money, we would not need to borrow. What we lost from the NLNG under the PDP Federal Government was about $11.6 billion. Edo State’s share of that money was more than N30 billion.

“If you realise that from every one billion dollars, we get more than N2.7 billion. So if PDP did not steal and bleed the economy dry, our legitimate revenue stolen by the past PDP government and its men is more than that.

“PDP is simply not in a position to blame the victims of their own looting which is unprecedented in the history of the country. My hope is that they would be brought to justice.

“You heard President Buhari saying last week that after they finished looting the treasury, they even borrowed to loot.

“You heard the president say that they took a loan from China and they already had taken $600 million from the loan. By now if they were still there, they would have finished the rest.

“In the South-South zone, look at the debt profile, Edo is the least borrowed. The only major loan we have taken since I assumed office was a N25 billion bond out of which we have paid over N20 billion because we are paying N530 million every month.

“As we speak, we have only about N5 billion left of that loan which will be liquidated before the end of this tenure. You heard of bailout, find out what PDP states are borrowing under the bailout plan, not for development but to pay salaries.

“But Edo State Government is up-to-date with salaries without bail out. You need to interrogate facts and not report these people as if they are responsible people because when you do that, people don’t know the difference between mischief makers and responsible people.

“PDP should simply shut up because they destroyed everything. Carry out your own investigations. You read in the papers how much our neighboring states are borrowing?

“You heard of N20billion, N30 billion under two months. To do what, to settle the invisibles. You hear them talking about N14.5 billion. We are not borrowing to pay salaries, we are able to do that in spite of the massive looting by the PDP.

“I appeal to the media because you are victims and you must interrogate these thieves when they break the highway rules and want to divert you. When you ask questions, they say you want to witch-hunt. Why won’t you witch-hunt when the witches are killing people in the village.

“For me, the only regret I have is that somehow, these rogues can seemingly eat their cake and yours and go out to complain that the cake is missing when it is in their stomach.

“I also need you to consult the World Bank to look at the statement they issued that Edo is the second state, Lagos being the first; that these two states have shown sufficient reforms, transparency, accountability in Internally Generated Revenue and reforming the public policy to ensure value for money.

“They are providing these facilities as a measure for encouraging other states to take a cue from what Lagos and Edo are doing. If this is the basis of support and you are listening to a bunch of armed robbers of what they think about decent society, they would rather borrow at 20% and they are envious that we are attracting a facility more or less at zero cost of 1% spread out over 20 years.

“If you read the report of the Senate, it says about 17 states (and these are PDP states) have applied for this facility but because of their public image, the World Bank is not willing to loan to them.

“I read in one of the papers that about $2.2 million donated by an NGO to support the election was stolen and they were compelled to return it but the former Minister Finance said it was witchhunting because they have refunded the money but it was misapplied.

“You hear PDP say nothing has happened in Edo State. Even the Hospital we are building, the Benin City Water Storm project, just one project is more than the entire loan we have taken. So as we speak, Edo is the least borrowed. Every state now is borrowing money for salaries.

“You are not just to parrot the views of armed robbers. When you report, you say however, it will be recalled that, that way, the reader understands who is saying the truth.”

Crime16-year-old Suspected Female Cultist Caught Sleeping With 52 Men by DONSMITH123(op): 1:50pm On Aug 17, 2015
A 16-year-old secondary school dropout, Ifechukwu Atunanya, has been arrested by policemen from the Anambra State Police Command while allegedly having sex with over 52 young men inside a bush in what looked like an initiation ceremony.

According to reports, the suspects were all rounded up in the bush in Awka and are reportedly members of the Supreme Vikings Confraternity, during the initiation of new members.

Ifechukwu, on her arrest, claimed she was forced to sleep with every male member of the cult during her initiation.

According to the state Commissioner of Police, Hosea Karma, the police acted on an intelligence tip-off that the cult members and their new entrants were in a bush performing some rituals, explaining that some items including guns, machetes and several wraps of Indian hemp, were recovered from them.

On apprehension, the Police said the suspects confirmed that as part of their ritual, every male member of the cult will sleep with every prospective female member.

“This they did in order to secure their oath of secrecy and it was during the raid we arrested ifechukwu,” Hosea stated.

At the police station, Ifechukwu claimed that she had to travel to Anambra from Abuja just to witness the initiation of new members.

In her statement, she said:

“I joined them three months ago and during my initiation; I was forced to have sex with every registered male member of the cult present that night. I was given sedatives so as not to feel what they were doing. It was not easy, but I bore the pain,” she said.

“The day we were initiated, I was the only girl in their midst. I was determined to be a successful member. I was further convinced to stay because I discovered that they were more honorable men than the other cult groups.

“I am sorry for myself and would love to be given the opportunity to go back to school,” she sobbed.

She went further to say she never knew that it was crime to be a cult member.

“I am so sorry,” Ifechukwu begged.

Another member, Ugochukwu Agbazuo, also said they are all undergraduates of various institutions in Anambra.

“Apart from some of our national leaders, we are all students. I was initiated into the cult while I was still in my first year. I had no choice but to join them because of the harassment in school. I discovered that most of the Engineering students in my school were members of different cult groups.”

Speaking further, Ugochukwu added: “If you identify with a known cult in school, the lecturers will respect you. You don’t have to buy handouts. This was why I joined them.”

“We did not steal or harass innocent people. The guns that were found with us were bought in case there was a clash in school. It is our leaders who are all graduates and working across the country that normally assists us to secure the arms. It is strictly for protection and one of the rules of our group is that you must read and pass your exams on merit,” he added.

On the issue of rape, Ugochukwu admitted that it only happened with female members.

“A female intending member cannot undergo the rigorous process during the initiation. So, our leaders suggested that the best way to get them under oath is for every registered member to have sex with her during initiation.

“She would be given sedatives during the process so that she will not physically feel the pain. Ifechukwu’s case was better because we were only 52 registered males present on the day of her initiation. All of our female members were raped,” he noted.

As the story goes, Ifechukuw’s parents, who hail from Anambra State, are still alive. However, she said that they were not aware of her secret cult activities.

“I am from a poor family and I wanted to be the light that will change the situation in my family. I got to know about the cult activity through a friend. She assured me that all the connections that I needed in life will be made if I joined the group,” Ifechukwu stated.

PoliticsBorno To Re-open Public Schools by DONSMITH123(op): 11:50am On Aug 17, 2015
Borno State Government has finally put in place machinery to reopen public schools in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital.

As part of effort to open these schools, which are now accommodating Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) from all parts of the state, the state governor, Alhaji Kashim Shettima, has constituted a 13-man committee to work out modalities for their reopening.

Primary and secondary schools in the state have been shut for over a year now with students due to series of attacks by the Boko Haram insurgents which left 22 of the 27 local governments in the state captured.

Though Maiduguri, the state capital was never captured by the insurgents, many primary and secondary schools in the capital have become homes to thousands of IDPs and making it difficult for classes to hold in the city.

There has been agitations for the reopening of the schools for sometimes now, with the state government always having to promise to get students back to schools without any concrete action.

But with the constitution of a committee to work out the modalities for the reopening of the schools, the schools are expected to be opened for classes in Maiduguri at the beginning of next academic session when the students might have lost two academic sessions.

The state government in a statement signed by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Alhaji Usman Jidda Shuwa at the weekend said the committee has been given three weeks within which to submit its report to the government, after which an action would be taken on the reopening of the schools.

The terms of reference of the committee include: identifying the total number of public schools and advise government on how best these schools could be effectively used for academic activities.

The committee is expected to take into consideration those schools currently accommodating IDPs as well as evaluate how best the Internally Displaced students/pupils at the camps and those staying with relatives in the host communities could appropriately be sent to the existing public schools in the state capital.

The committee is also expected to make recommendations on how the State Universal Basic Education Board should post relevant teaching staff to secondary and primary schools in view of the existing conditions.

The committee is equally tasked with the responsibility of liaising with security agencies on provision of adequate security to the IDPs and the schools when reopened and to recommend measures that it may find necessary for the effective and smooth achievement of the set objectives.

The committee will be chaired by Alhaji Gambo Gubio and has as members other notable personalities in the state, including Dr. Bulama Mali Gubio, Alhaji Haruna Idrisa Timta, Alhaji Musa Inuwa Kubo, Alhaji Abubakar Musa, Alhaji Lawan Shettima Benisheikh, Mohammed Kauji, among others

PoliticsIgbo Leaders Insist Buhari Is Being Influenced by DONSMITH123(op): 11:18am On Aug 17, 2015
A group of Igbo leaders, the Igbo Leaders of Thought (ILT), has insisted that President Muhammadu Buhari is being influenced by some former leaders in his anti-graft crusade, challenging him to prove otherwise by waging a holistic war against graft.

It will be recalled that the President had responded to a paper by ILT, authored by Professor Ben Nwabueze (SAN) that instead of limiting his searchlight to Dr. Goodluck Jonathan’s administration, Buhari should also probe the General Ibrahim Babangida, Sani Abacha, Abdulsalami Abubakar, Olusegun Obasanjo and Umaru Musa Yar’Adua’s regimes, and that he was being influenced by some of these leaders. The President, in response, said he could not be tele-guided by anybody.

President Buhari, speaking through Mallam Shehu Garba, his Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, insisted he is not being influenced or tele-guided by anybody, adding that he would not turn a deaf ear to the looting of public treasury and crude oil theft. The President also said he would not stop the anti-corruption agencies from doing their work.

Reacting to the denial, the ILT, in a statement issued by its Deputy Secretary, Evangelist Elliot Uko, yesterday, accused Mallam Shehu Garba of avoiding the real points in his response.

His words: “The anti-corruption war and probe in order to recover our stolen common wealth is not only needful, but commendable. Nigerians know that the only pathway to restoring sanity, probity and accountability to governance in our much battered and so much abused nation is to carry out the exercise in a holistic manner without granting a clean bill of health on the 1999-2007 regime or any other regime since returning to civil rule in 1999.

“The insinuation that Mr. President is scared of probing the 1999-2007 is a by-product of the statement from the presidency that only the Jonathan regime is targeted for probe. Had the presidency announced that sordid affairs located within the 1999-2007 regime will also be looked into, Nigerians will not have formed the opinion that ex-president Obasanjo is not only above the law, but that his larger than life image hovering over the Buhari presidency will obviously make it extremely difficult if not out-rightly impossible for president Buhari to be objective, unbiased and upright especially in the probe of corruption in our polity.

“Nigerians are wondering why the monumental fraud and sleaze that occurred between 1999 and 2007 is about to be swept under the carpet while our government’s only area of interest begins somewhere after 2009. Truth is bitter, and this truth is also obvious to all Nigerians over 20 years of age; that the 1999-2007 PDP led government laid the foundation for all the other regimes after it. Nigerians know that the sleaze under that regime stink to high heavens. Any fight against corruption and probe and recovery of stolen funds that exempts the 1999-2007 regime is tainted, selective, and a confirmation of the large influence of the “invisible government” in our polity.

“The Igbo Leaders of Thought did not say that president Buhari is teleguided. The Igbo Leaders of Thought identified the over-bearing influence, powers and connections of past heads of state who played very key roles in the emergence of President Buhari in March this year and wondered how he expects Nigerians to believe him when his aides point at “distraction” as the only reason he is avoiding probing the 1999-2007 POP government.

“Nobody believes that. Everybody knows that the rat cannot probe the cat. Some past Leaders’ shadows are hovering over president Buhari. He is clearly constrained by certain factors.

“These factors will certainly affect the credibility of the probe and recovery exercise if it is only targeted at the last regime. The issues raised by the Igbo Leaders of Thought represents the thought and views of millions of Nigerians who share the opinion that the only way sanity would be restored in our country is to make the exercise a holistic, unbiased and all-inclusive one. The very point Alhaji Garba Shehu cleverly avoided in his response. Nobody said Buhari is tele-guided. Nigerians merely want the probe and recovery of stolen funds to date back to 1999. That is the only way Nigerians, the international community and indeed future generations will agree the exercise is not a witch -hunt.”
