PoliticsDefection: Your Actions Shameful – IYP Tells Timi Alaibe, Others by DONSMITH123(op): 8:49am On Aug 11, 2015
The Ijaw Young Professionals (IYP) on Monday berated members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Bayelsa State who are set to decamp to the All Progressives Congress (APC), describing their action as “shameful and disgraceful”.

It was widely reported at the weekend that many of the ruling party’s leaders and members in the state were ready to switch camp to the opposition party at an event in the state capital on Saturday.

Listed among those ready to defect were the former Managing Director of Niger-Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Timi Alaibe and former member of the House of Representatives, Stell Dorgu.

But in its reaction in a statement yesterday in Yenagoa, leader of the Ijaw Young Professionals, who spoke through the spokesperson of IYP, Seighfa Tonye-Brown, said the planned defection was “shameless and disgraceful.”

He, however, expressed optimism that their defection from PDP “will not affect the chances of the incumbent governor, Seriake Dickson, from being re-elected”.

According to him, the reason for the impending defection was “greed and selfish interest rather than the desire to serve”.

Tonye-Brown said based on that premise, the defectors would not enjoy the support of the people of Bayelsa State.

He said that those same people were the ones, who conspired against former President Goodluck Jonathan in his reelection bid despite the enormous benefits they got through influential appointments “but was never reflected in whatever form in the lives of their people in the state”.

This, he said, did not recommend them as worthy leaders to be trusted and called on Bayelsans to reject them ahead of the election.

Tonye-Brown said, “Our people must shine their eyes and beware of these characters because they do not mean well for them. We know the antecedents of these so-called leaders who are obviously desperate for power to satisfy immoral ends. We know for a fact that the only motivation for defecting is their noted greed and locust mentality.

“They are all fair weather politicians who are only concerned about themselves and their families. Curiously many of them have benefited so much from the Dickson administration as well as that of former President Goodluck Jonathan but what did they do for their own people? This is why our people must be careful not to be deceived by these so-called leaders. They are just selfish”.

While calling on Governor Seriake Dickson not to lose sleep over the proposed defection, the group said Bayelsans were convinced about his sterling performance in office and will do everything possible to rally support for his re-election.

”Bayelsans are no fools. We will mobilise across the state and we are sure our people will recognise this betrayal by these so called leaders which will ensure massive support to re-elect the countryman governor. Without doubt this coming election is all about the ordinary people but never that of a gang of selfish elite who are out again to plunder our common wealth as they did in the past. They should know that Bayelsa State does not exist for them alone. Their selfish interest cannot take precedence over the collective wellbeing of our people”, Tonye-Brown stated.

PoliticsDetails Of Buhari’s Meeting With Jonathan Revealed by DONSMITH123(op): 1:53pm On Aug 10, 2015
Details are beginning to emerge from the private meeting between President Muhammadu Buhari and former President Goodluck Jonathan at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. The Nations reports that a former Head of State, Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar facilitated the meeting.

According to the report, the meeting was at the instance of the 2015 Elections Peace Committee, after former President, Jonathan complained that President Buhari was not sticking to the peace accord they signed.

Jonathan was reported to have also sought for understanding on alleged corrupt practices and mismanagement of funds under his administration, with a source saying the former President claimed he was hearing about some of the graft allegations for the first time.

The report however claimed that President Buhari reportedly insisted that all looted funds must be returned to the nation’s coffers, adding that the President also restated his pledge that Jonathan had nothing to fear at all.

According to a source quoted by the report, the outcome of the meeting between Buhari and Jonathan formed the motive behind Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo’s declaration at the weekend that the target of the administration’s anti-corruption war was not Jonathan.

The report further disclosed that the former President was not comfortable with the way Buhari moved against his ex-Chief Security Officer (CSO), ex-National Security Adviser (NSA) and some ministers, asking the Abdulsalami committee to prevail on Buhari not to rubbish him.

The source said: “For some weeks, Jonathan has been in the country to iron out some issues on his government.

“Based on Jonathan’s complaint, Abdulsalami made efforts – five times- to get in touch with Buhari but the ex-Head of State could not get through on time. I think Buhari already had security reports on Jonathan’s emissary.”

Abdulsalami was said to have been frustrated at a point and had to enlist other ex-presidents who prevailed on Buhari to allow the committee an opportunity to mediate.

The source added: “This was how Abdulsalami succeeded in securing an appointment from Buhari for Jonathan with a caveat that the immediate past President should feel free to bare his mind.”

The source further gave an insight into the discussions.

“Jonathan said he was hearing some of the allegations, especially financial sleaze, against his administration for the first time. He made it clear that he had nothing to do with some of these corrupt practices.

“He said whatever steps or actions the President intends to take; it should be within the framework of the peace accord the two leaders signed. Obviously, he wanted soft landing.

“He also pledged to cooperate with Buhari as much as possible on all steps he is going to take.”

On his part, President Buhari was said to have restated his pledge that Joanthan had nothing to fear, though insisted that there was no going back on the recovery of looted funds.

“The President reassured Jonathan that he has no personal agenda against him. But he insisted that whatever was stolen from the treasury must be returned,” the source said.

PoliticsSaraki Accuses News Site Of Forging Passport, Asks UK To Begin Probe by DONSMITH123(op): 10:12am On Aug 10, 2015
Senate President, Bukola Saraki, has reacted to claims by a news site alleging that he is not a Nigerian citizen and should not hold any public office.

A statement published on his Facebook page by his aide on New Media, Bamikole Omishore, said the “totally fabricated report entitled: ‘Nigeria’s Senate President Saraki Lied In His Official Election Forms’,” was dubious and utterly false.

It said the article inferred that Dr. Saraki intentionally avoided question 10 on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) form for candidates contesting National Assembly elections and by so doing must have sworn to an oath of allegiance to another country, such as United Kingdom.

The statement reads in parts: “One is not unmindful of the obvious fact that freedom of expression may be absolutely basic human right, but it is pertinent to state that it is not without limits. This obvious fact has brought to bear, what is the essence of journalism which is meant to educate, orientate and bring out the truth to ensure justice, equity and fairness in every human endeavor. Unfortunately, it seems the tenets of professional journalism means nothing to Sahara Reporters.

“As it stands, a detailed perusal of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, clearly indicates that the point Sahara Reporters is attempting to raise is moot – especially with regards to holding UK citizenship. The ready question at hand to ask is- why Sahara Reporter has intentionally remained silent and avoided to look into the constitutional Provisions of right to hold dual citizenship, especially where the party in question holds Nigerian citizenship by birth.

“The second relevant question is, if in fact, the purpose of such a publication was for public interest, has Sahara Reporters carried out diligent investigation on the authenticity of its report before publication? If the answers to the above questions are in the negative, then the rationale behind the report is for obvious reasons.

“Also, there has always been a flawed misconception on the issue of dual citizenship vis-a-vis a holder of public office in Nigeria. S.28 of the 1999 Constitution (as (amended) deals with this wherein it highlights the fact that only those who are Nigerians by registration or naturalization shall forfeit their citizenship if they acquire the citizenship of another country”.

The statement insisted that “holding dual citizenship does not mean that a public office holder, like the Senate President had earlier changed his nationality in the past; it simply means he has held both citizenships simultaneously without the need to acquire one after the other. As both were acquired by birth, the Senate President automatically had both citizenships ‘bestowed’ on him from the moment of his birth.”

The aide further stated that Saraki’s UK passport as posted on the website of Sahara Reporters is a forged document that deserve thorough investigation by the UK Home and passport Office.

“Senator Saraki on the 19th of July 2015, has instructed his Solicitors in UK to write the UK Home Office to commence immediate investigation into this act of criminality. There is no doubt that this is a typical criminal offence against the State and also an act of defamation of character against the President of the Senate and whoever is found responsible should be prosecuted.

“To this end, it is no longer shocking, based on the antecedents of Sahara Reporters, the extent to which Sahara Reporters and its sponsors are willing to go to malign the person of Senator Saraki; passing off a forged/fake document as authentic is no doubt a criminal offence in every jurisdiction”.

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) will today announce the release of results of May/June 2015 West African Senior School Certificate Examination.

WAEC may also release list of debtor states, owing about N4billion.

WAEC Head of National Office, Lagos, Mr. Charles Eguridu, had at a briefing in Lagos two weeks ago, threatened to withhold results of candidates in those states.

Eguridu, who did not mention the states, threatened to do so if they failed to pay within a fortnight from his disclosure.

The federal government had backed WAEC’s threat to withhold results.

Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Mr. MacJohn Nwaobiala, while interacting with State House correspondents after briefing President Muhammadu Buhari late July, urged the affected states to redeem their pledges to avoid embarrassment.

PoliticsObasanjo Must See Abiola As His Hero – Segun Osoba by DONSMITH123(op): 8:15am On Aug 10, 2015
A former Governor of Ogun State, Chief Olusegun Osoba, has faulted his kinsman former President Olusegun Obasanjo for his continuous attacks on people.

Osoba said this during an interview with newsmen in Lagos at the weekend.

He said this in reaction to Obasanjo’s claim that Chief Obafemi Awolowo was never the leader of the Yoruba but was only elected leader by his supporters.

He said, “I would not like to judge Chief Obasanjo because as I am trying to put the facts straight, I don’t want to join him in condemnation of individuals. I respect him for his own strong points and weaknesses. But one thing I disagree with him is his condemnation of virtually everybody and even those around him.

“Wole Soyinka is not good, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala is not good, Atiku Abubakar is not good, Reuben Aabati is useless, Doyin Okupe is not to be associated with. Who then is good?”

He said even the dead were not spared of unfair criticism by Obasanjo, noting that even MKO Abiola, who gave his life for democracy, did not escape Obasanjo’s criticism.

He said this was unfortunate because without Abiola, Obasanjo would never have emerged President.

He said, “Whether he likes it or not, MKO Abiola will forever be the symbol and hero of modern day democracy in Nigeria. When Abiola couldn’t negotiate his freedom by signing away his mandate to General Sani Abacha, he laid down his life and I expect Chief Obasanjo to understand the fact that he became a beneficiary and should see Abiola as a hero.

“Nobody can claim to be the only hero in any society. Society is a team. Within our Egba community, the Ransome-Kutis are heroes. Their mother was an activist, Fela was an acitivist, Beko Ransome-Kuti was an activist. Prof. Olikoye Ransome-Kuti took his father’s nature. He was a gentleman but was also an activist with his philosophy of primary healthcare.

“Wole Soyinka is a hero, Ebenezer Obey is a hero; he recorded over 50 records and delivered philosophical lyrics. Akintola Williams, an Egba man, is the first accountant and is still worshipped today. Society is the totality of a team. A tree can never make a forest and that is where I disagree with Chief Obasanjo. To reduce Soyinka to a wine connoisseur hurts me.”

Osoba, while describing Obasanjo’s book, ‘My Watch’, as a distortion of history, said Awolowo was unanimously elected as the leader of the Yoruba in 1966 shortly before the civil war.

PoliticsBreaking News: Former NHIS Boss Surrenders To EFCC Over $2.1m Seized Cash by DONSMITH123(op): 10:46am On Aug 08, 2015
former Executive Secretary of the National Health Insurance Scheme, NHIS, Dr. Olufemi Thomas, has surrendered to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, for interrogation on the alleged seizure of $2.1million cash.

DAILY POST recalls that the EFCC had threatened to declare him wanted after efforts to locate him both in Lagos and Abuja proved abortive.

Thomas had denied ownership of the said cash and claimed yesterday that he was never on the run as reported by the media.

The EFCC is however continuing with its investigation of the matter and may invite a former Minister of Health for questioning on how NHIS paid N990million for a plot of land estimated at N350million, while Thomas was in office.

Thomas reportedly arrived Abuja on Thursday night and reported at the EFCC headquarters, Abuja early Friday.

He was said to have been grilled for several hours by the agency after which his media aide, Mr. Sola Adeyemi, issued a statement describing him as “a law-abiding person, a true professional and a man of his words.”

He said: “Today (Friday), we were at the EFCC headquarters in Abuja in reaction to media reports that Dr. Thomas was wanted by the anti-graft agency in connection with a $2.1million cash seizure, where my boss made an official statement on the allegation of money laundering.

“This shows that he was never on the run, and he would never do anything against the law of the land. He has gone to answer the EFCC call. So we believe my boss’ visit will put to rest all these allegations and help the anti-graft agency in their further investigation of the matter. Therefore, until the investigation is concluded, we would not speak on this matter.”

Adeyemi appealed to the media to “maintain a high level of professionalism in the discharge of your duties in order that the anti-graft agency can focus on a thorough investigation on the various allegations. ”

According to The Nation, a reliable source in the commission said the former Executive Secretary of NHIS voluntarily came to the EFCC office for interrogation on the seized cash.

“We have interacted with him and we asked him to make statement accordingly on what he knew about the cash,” the source said.

“ We also grilled him on the relationship between him and the Bureau de Change operator, Ibiteye John Bamidele, who was arrested with the money by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

“We are proceeding with the next stage to investigate issues highlighted from the submissions of the two people. There are other clues we are also considering too.

“The ex-NHIS is on administrative bail and he has given assurance that he would report to the EFCC anytime he is needed.”

CrimeMan Cuts Off Maid’s Neck For Refusing To Sleep With Him by DONSMITH123(op): 3:40pm On Aug 07, 2015
A 20-year old house maid, Chioma Onyegili, was on Wednesday hacked to death by a 31-year-old son of her madam, Okechukwu for allegedly refusing to have sex with him in Onitsha, Anambra State.

It was gathered that the gory incident occurred at about 9.30 pm Wednesday at 56 Zik Avenue, Fegge, Onitsha.

Sun reports that the suspect, who killed her victim with sharp cutlass, is currently cooling his heels at the police station.

Residents of the area said the deceased girl was living with the 70-year-old mother of the accused, who always demanded that the girl sleep with him, which she always resisted. He thereafter slashed the girl on her neck with a machete.

The Divisional Police Officer in charge of Fegge Police Station, Mr. Rabui Garba, a Superintendent of Police, who confirmed the incident, said that when the information reached his office, he immediately dispatched a team of detectives, who subsequently arrested the suspect.

He said that the suspect would be transferred to State Investigation Department (CID) for further investigation, while the deceased’s corpse had been deposited in an undisclosed hospital mortuary in Onitsha.

The suspect had confessed to the crime, saying that he had killed some other persons in the past in a similar manner. He claimed that he did not know what pushed him to kill the girl.
