Ade Adesomoju, Abuja The Federal High Court in Abuja has struck out the applications by former President Goodluck Jonathan and the detained former National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki, against the subpoenas ordering them to appear to testify in defence of a former National Publicity Secretary, Olisa Metuh. The trial judge, Justice Okon Abang, held that he had no jurisdiction to entertain Jonathan’s application challenging the subpoena since the (the ex-President) had yet to be served with the court’s subpoena directing him to appear in court. But the court held that granting the ex-NSA’s application seeking an adjournment pending the determination of his motion in relation to the subpoena issued on him pending before the Court of Appeal, would amount to flouting the earlier judgment of the Court of Appeal delivered on September 29, directing him to sign and ensure the execution of the subpoena on Dasuki. Justice Abang, after dismissing the application, ordered Dasuki to enter the witness box. Dasuki was earlier produced in court on Wednesday by the Department of State Service following the order of the court. http://punchng.com/breaking-metuh-court-orders-dasuki-to-enter-witness-box-rejects-jonathans-applications-against-subpoena/ |

The Senate has backed President Muhammadu Buhari on the sacking of former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Mr. Babachir Lawal. A probe into the alleged mismanagement of funds under the Presidential Initiative on the North East by the Senate had indicted Lawal. President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki, in his remarks on a point of order raised by the Deputy Majority Leader, Senator Bala Ibn Na’Allah, at the plenary on Tuesday, hailed Buhari for “doing the right thing on this matter.” Na’Allah, who recalled that the Senate initiated the probe that led to Lawal’s indictment and removal, said the lawmakers were also responsible for the sacking of ex-Chairman of the Presidential Task Force on Pension Reforms, Abdulrasheed Maina, who was recently reinstated into Federal Government service in a controversial circumstance. Members of the Southern Mandate of Nigeria has said that President Muhammadu Buhari is not fit to run for the 2019 elections as Nigerians no longer trust him to deliver his promises. The group in a statement by its National Coordinator, Comrade Francis Ikonomwan, in Benin, Edo State, said that Buhari should ignore all calls to contest in the 2019 Presidential elections and focus on delivering his campaign promises to Nigerians before the end of his tenure. The statement reads, “President Muhammadu Buhari has not been able to deliver on his campaign promises. What has this administration to campaign within every sector of the economy or is it the fight against corruption that has been swept under the carpet? “Even the political leaders and the people who fought for his emergence as President today have been abandoned and are all lamenting today. “There is a total disconnect between the people and the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration. Poverty and Hunger is now the order of the day in Nigeria as we speak. It is getting obvious by the day that Nigerians can no longer trust President Muhammadu Buhari with the leadership of this country. “If APC fields Muhammadu Buhari as its presidential candidate in 2019, we are afraid that Nigerians may stone us at campaign grounds. We may just end up giving the opposition party the presidency in 2019 on a platter of gold. “However, we wish to call on President Muhammadu Buhari to ignore such call as it is not in the interest of Nigerians. “President Muhammadu Buhari’s priority now should be how to use the remaining part of his administration to deliver on our campaign promises and do the needful by not indicating interest to contest in 2019.” Cc: lalasticlala http://punchng.com/buhari-has-no-chance-in-2019-elections-group/ |

. Ade Adesomoju, Abuja The Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen, said on Thursday that he had yet to receive a formal letter by a former President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Ayo Salami (retd.), rejecting his appointment as the Chairman of the Anti-Corruption Cases Trial Monitoring Committee set up by the National Judicial Council. It was reported on Thursday that Salami had rejected his appointment. Confirming the report, the Senior Special Assistant to the CJN, Mr. Awassam Bassey, said in a text message sent to our correspondent on Thursday, that Salami had yet to disclose the reason for his decision to reject his appointment. Bassey’s text message read, “I refer to the issue you raised this morning and I can confirm that it is true; I mean the resignation of Hon. Mr. Justice Ayo Salami (Retired). Besides what we see in the media, we cannot exactly say what Justice Salami’s reasons are for declining to undertake this all-important national assignment that he was called upon to perform. “His Lordship the Hon. Chief Justice of Nigeria awaits Hon Salami’s letter of resignation. That’s all I can say at this moment. A more detailed response will be communicated to you when we receive Hon. Mr. Justice Salami’s letter.” The CJN, had on September 18 announced sweeping reforms to fight corruption on the bench and to better position the judiciary to fairly and expeditiously determine corruption and financial crimes cases in the various courts. One of such mechanisms which Justice Onnoghen said would be put in place included an Anti-Corruption Cases Trial Monitoring Committee to be constituted to monitor and effectively enforce the new policies announced by CJN. President Muhammadu Buhari is currently presiding over the Federal Executive Council meeting, where the Minister of Interior, Abdulrahman Dambazau is conspicuously absent. The meeting which started exactly 10:55am, at the Council Chambers, inside the Presidential Villa, Abuja had in attendance Head of Civil Service of the Federation, Winifred Oyo-Ita, Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice Abubakar Malami, both of whom have been fingered in the controversies that re-instated Abdulrasheed Maina, a former Chairman of the Pension Reform Task Force.
