The long-running drama over the sale of the highest-priced home in the U.S. appears to be heading to its finale. The 57,000-square foot Los Angeles mansion built by the late TV producer Aaron Spelling is slated for sale to a 22-year-old heiress to a Formula One racing fortune. The home on five acres of property in Holmby Hills has a bowling alley, beauty salon, several gift- wrapping rooms and parking for 100 cars. "The Manor," as the property is known, had a list price of $150 million that didn't budge during the real-estate downturn that sent prices in Los Angeles down by more than a third. The sales price was not disclosed. The buyer, Petra Ecclestone, will be splitting her time between London and Los Angeles after her planned August wedding to entrepreneur James Stunt, according to a spokeswoman. Ms. Ecclestone's father is the British billionaire and Formula One racing boss Bernie Ecclestone. The seller, Candy Spelling, Mr. Spelling's widow, declined to comment. Mr. Spelling produced such TV shows as "Mod Squad," "Charlie's Angels," "Dynasty," "Starsky and Hutch," "Beverly Hills, 90210," and "Melrose Place." Ms. Spelling and her husband bought the property in the early 1980s and tore down the existing house to build the French chateau-style home in 1991. The home has a double staircase inspired by "Gone With the Wind." It was considered the largest home in Los Angeles by far when it was built. There's also a flower-cutting room, a china room, a "Prince Charles suite," named after its one-time royal guest, and a library in which Ms. Spelling bound her husband's scripts. The estate has been shown since 2008 and was officially listed in March 2009. If completed, the sale would underscore the importance of foreign buyers in the U.S. real- estate market. Earlier this year, Russian investor Yuri Milner bought a Silicon Valley home for $100 million, the highest-known price paid for a single-family home in the U.S. Russian composer Igor Krutoy and his wife, Olga, recently bought a condominium at New York's Plaza for $48 million. Overall, though, the real-estate market in the U.S. is struggling, with prices sinking to 2002 levels in the first quarter, according to the S&P/Case-Shiller National Index released earlier this month. Petra Ecclestone also has a six-story house in London's Chelsea neighborhood purchased for £56 million ($90.9 million), according to press reports. In 2004, her father sold a mansion in Kensington Palace Gardens to steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal for £57 million, according to reports. Ms. Spelling has said she wanted to downsize. She closed in December 2010 on a 15,555- square-foot condominium in nearby Century City for $35 million. She had earlier agreed to pay $47 million for the two-story penthouse in Related Cos. Art Deco-inspired tower, "The Century," but Related dropped prices amid the weak market. The new price also reflected a smaller square footage and other changes. Rick Hilton and David Kramer of Hilton & Hyland, a Christie's International Real Estate affiliate, represent Ms. Ecclestone. Mr. Hilton and Jeff Hyland of the same firm share the listing with Sally Forster Jones of Coldwell Banker.

Here are some gems she’s shared with her friends. 1. The cleanliness of your bathroom. Listen, if we stay over, we ’re going in there, and we’re going to be paying close attention to what we see. Not only will we never forget what we see, but we ’ll share the intelligence with our friends. For example, I once went out with a guy who ’s bathroom was eerily clean. I reported back to my friends, “His bathroom is so immaculate, it’s like being in a hotel. I don’t know how I feel about that ”. Him and I didn’t last. Another time I was in a dude ’s bathroom and his bathmat was so foul, I told my friends, “His bathmat is so nasty, it looks like dead salmon skins, stitched together”. Again, that guy and I didn ’t last. Is there a pattern? I don’t know. Does it matter? You decide. 2. Boxers or briefs. Okay, you knew that. But for those of you who weren ’t sure, women always tell their friends what you wear and how you look in it, if not in so many words. For example, some of their friends might just come out and ask, and other women will just volunteer the info. Like, “he’s got this great pair of boxers with cups of coffee on them; they're so neat, I'd wear them ”. Or “he wears boxer briefs, alas… they shrink in the wash and he looks like a fifth grader ”. Since so many people you've never met are going to be hearing about your drawers, doesn't it make sense to have nice ones? Right. 3. Your performance. Now, I’m not saying that your lady acts like she ’s with a bunch of wild jackals when she ’s with her friends, but I guarantee ONE of them has asked her “How was it ?” or perhaps more pointedly “How was he ?” And an answer has been given. If she likes you and doesn ’t want to give too many details, she might just say something like “good”. If she doesn’t like you and you act like a blind muskrat in the sack, she’ll say it was “fine”. If something bizarre happened, like, say you were drunk and on speed, she might say something to the effect of “Wow, I ’ve never had sex before with someone who was drunk and on speed. That was crazy. In a bad way. This image of his dilated pupils is seared into my memory”. 4. Your size. Listen, ladies are ladies. At the same time, get a bunch of ladies drunk and discussions become heated, like a bunch of raccoons scurrying wildly around a cluster of open garbage cans. Or whatever that analogy was supposed to be. It comes up. For example, if a woman’s dating a short guy, her friends might ask simply “Is he….?” (i.e. hung like second grader) and the said woman will reply “yes” and the conversation will be over. At the same time, if said woman is dating a tall guy, that same question will be asked, with the exact same answer, except the implication has changed. Ho hum. If you know your lady has a wild, drunken raucous side to her, well you can bet your bottom dollar that she has pointed out pickles or hot dogs that most accurately represent the side and girth (ha ha!) of your finest member. 5. The contents of your fridge. Most women are either on a diet, just broke up with a diet or are considering a new diet. So what ’s inside of your fridge is a source of curiosity to us. Do you eat healthy? Have a fridge full of temptation? Like the same foods as we do? Have something for me to snack on? Have nothing at all? (which speaks badly of you-- it indicates that you can't commit to a weekly grocery trip). I remember I dated a guy and he had a fridge full of food AND diet sodas. And not just diet Cokes but sweet and refreshing beverages like Fresca and diet pink lemonades and other delights. I was very pleased. He was also hung like a second grader (I ’m not kidding, folks, a real second grader). But I enjoyed it thoroughly (during the five months we lasted) and told all my friends who enthusiastically gave this guys serious points. Likewise, the guy with the salmon skin bathmat had an empty fridge and we lasted two weeks. Mmm- hmm. Does it matter? Well guys, it's your call. By: my infobell |

Iker Casillas believes that Real Madrid would have beaten Manchester United in the Champions League final, and that Spain's top two sides are the best in Europe. The Blancos were eliminated by bitter rivals Barcelona in the semi-finals of the tournament and Pep Guardiola's men went on to beat the Red Devils 3-1 at Wembley last Saturday. "If Madrid had played the final of the Champions League we would also have earned [victory] against United," the Spanish No.1 told Sport. "I knew whoever won the Madrid-Barca semi-final was going to win [the competition]. We are the two strongest teams in Europe." The capital city club have started to strengthen for next season, with the arrival of Nuri Sahin and Hamit Altintop, and Casillas believes his side can go one step further in 2011-12 after securing the Copa del Rey this year "The positive aspect of the season is that we won a title," he said. "The downside is that we have been at the gates of two major titles, but next year [the aim] is to get beyond the bar. Finish first in La Liga and reach the final of the Champions League." goal.com |

Ijebu-Ode - A middle-aged man (names withheld) in Ijebu- Ode, Ogun, on Friday severed his manhood with a razor in broad day light. The incident, which occurred at the popular Oyingbo road, the commercial centre of the town, drew the attention of hundreds of residents of the town. An eyewitness account revealed that the man was trekking along Folagbade road but suddenly stopped at Oyingbo road junction and brought out a razor blade. The account said the man used the razor blade to cut off his male organ. “I saw the man coming from Folagbade road in a well behaved manner but suddenly stopped at Oyingbo junction. “He pulled off his trouser and brought out a razor blade to cut off his manhood. “Those of us who were at the scene of the incident could not believe it because it was totally strange to us, “ an eyewitness said. The News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, learnt that the man, in a pool of his own blood, was rushed to the state hospital by sympathizers. When contacted, the Chief Medical Director of the state hospital, Dr Wellington Ogunsanya, confirmed the incident. He said that a high level of depression and frustration might have led the man to commit such an act. Ogunsanya, however, said that doctors were in the process of performing a reconstructive operation on the man.(NAN) source: vanguardnews |

Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed Manchester United are set to sign Atletico Madrid goalkeeper David De Gea. Edwin van der Sar will retire after his side ’s Champions League final against Barcelona on Saturday and Ferguson, who was speaking after Gary Neville ’s testimonial, revealed the 20-year-old is on his way to replace the Dutchman. “Well we ’ve been working on it for quite a while. We identified him quite a while back as one we should go for. He’s a young goalkeeper, very quick, good composure, presence, he’s an outstanding replacement to Edwin van der Sar, ” Ferguson told Sky Sports. Goal.com revealed last Saturday that United had decided on De Gea to become the new first-choice at Old Trafford for a fee of £17.5 million. The Spanish goalkeeper has beaten off competition in Schalke’s Manuel Neuer and Ajax’s Maarten Stekelenburg and Ferguson conceded the hunt to find Van der Sar’s replacement was difficult, given the form of the 40-year-old in his final season. “Of course it does [make things difficult]. But we’re looking at the same types of quality because the one great quality that Edwin always had was his composure and organisational ability and with David De Gea he’s very similar that way. ” |
Uyo — In Akwa Ibom State a man may have to marry the corpse of his girlfriend, if the culture demands this. After several fruitless efforts to see the Eberefiak Oku Uyo (Clan head of Uyo and custodian of Ibibio culture) in his palace for comments on the matter, one of the Uyo chiefs met at the palace, Chief Effiong Udoh Akpan told Daily Trust "Such marriages are conducted between a boy friend that sees a girl that he likes, invites the girl to his house and decides to live with her in the house without initiating the process of traditional marriage up to the time the girl died while living with him. After fulfilling all the traditional marriage rites, the boy friend is then given the permission by her parents to go ahead and bury her. That is entirely a different procedure. "The corpse of the lady will be laid in state and the boy friend will come and lie down beside the corpse. He must lie down beside the corpse for a whole night because she is his wife. The boy friend will be locked in a room along with the corpse. He will be responsible for the burial expenses. The following morning they will open the room, and the corpse is taken to the grave for burial. He will buy drinks, cook food and pay the musicians. "If for any reason the parents of the girl suspect that he is responsible for the death of the girl, either through negligence or any form of cruelty, or physical attack, that is entirely a different thing. All these, marriage after death and the burial happens when the death is believed to be a natural one. If it is not a natural death and the boy is implicated or responsible, some parents settle it physically while, others go to court," he said. One of the victims of such traditions, Nsikak Imoh said his major downfall in life started when he met his late girl friend Mary Effiong in Kaduna in 2009. "Then I used to sell provisions at Kasuwan Barci in Kaduna. I was in my shop when a Hausa trader came with her to my shop and said see one of your Igbo sisters who is looking for her brother. You know in the north, they term all of us as Igbos. Mary told me that she was actually not looking for any particular person. She said she was in Kaduna to look for admission at Kaduna polytechnic and that the process will take days , so she wanted to see if she can get an Akwa Ibom woman to stay with. "I hosted her. She got the admission and stayed with me. She was going to the school from my house until she fell ill and died in a hospital. I paid all the medical expenses and arranged for the corpse to be transported to her place at Ibiono Ibom. I knew there will be problems. But because my conscience was clear and looking at the trouble I took and the money I spent, I did not expect the trouble I ran into. On getting to their compound, the parents drove me away with the corpse. I went and deposited the corpse at a morgue first. That was another expense. The four people that accompanied me and the corpse from Kaduna went back. I had to go and mobilize my relations in Uyo to intervene in the matter. "The oracles were consulted. To be sure I was not implicated in her death, despite the medical and police reports I went with. After some negotiations between my parents and the girls parents, I was meant to marry the corpse, and bury her thereafter. I had to go back to Kaduna to sell all I had to be able to do that. Even at that, I was supported financially by my people, before I could meet some of the necessary demands. I have not recovered financially since then. I have not been able to return to Kaduna since then," he said. Udoma Akpan Udoma is from Akwa Ibom but based in Benin City, Edo State. Udoma told Daily Trust in Uyo that he has a broken home, his business is fast going down, and he is having a serious mental and psychological trauma following the death a girlfriend he was helping. Udoma said he is married to an Edo lady with four children. He is the proprietor of a private primary and secondary school in Benin. "I am happily married and living with my family when a female Corp member, Miss Ekaete Usoro was posted to my school for her primary assignment. I discovered that she was from the same Akwa Ibom with me. We started a relationship. But when I realized that my wife was becoming very suspicious about my movement with Ekaete, I rented a room for her at Ikpoba Hills in Benin, far away from our school. When she finished her service early this year, I got a teaching job for her at a friend's school in Benin. It was not possible for me to retain her in my school, because my wife was not comfortable with her. "Around December last year, she went to her place and brought her younger brother that I admitted into my school, and I paid for WAEC, NECO and JAMB for him. He is currently writing his WAEC. Just last week the brother rushed to me in my school and said the sister was dead. She died when she was returning to Benin from Onitsha, where she went to buy some clothes for sale. I went with the brother to a hospital at Agbor where we identified the corpse, and transferred it to a morgue in Benin. The next day I sent the boy home to go and tell their people what happened. He returned two days later without a word from the family. "I arranged for vehicles, a burial party (undertakers), a live band, an ambulance to convey the corpse, a medical and police report stating that she died in a motor accident. We arrived here 3 days ago and are yet to be received by the parents. They want to force me to marry and bury the corpse. I cannot do that. I am a Christian. Moreover, I am married and cannot therefore marry anyone either dead or alive. I don't know the confusion they are trying to cause. I was only helping her. I am not responsible for her death. Some people have gone to tell my wife what is happening. She no longer picks my calls," he said. But Ekaete's elder brother who works at the state secretariat in Uyo, Mr. Usoro Udoh Usoro said the family has no problem with Udoma. "We do not know Udoma. We do not have an in-law by name Udoma. Yes, we have a daughter and sister, Miss Ekaete that resides in Edo. Ekaete is single. She is not married. The family will raise a delegation to go to Edo and trace Ekaete. If we don't find her and anybody said Udoma is keeping her, that is when Udoma will be asked to produce her for us. "For now, we are not interested in who has died and who has not died. It has not reached that point, and we hope it will not get to that. Our Ekaete is hale and healthy and we do not approve any form of relationship between her and anybody, and no one has the consent of this family to either put Ekaete in family way, or keep custody of her. Yes, he came with a corpse and we asked him to take the corpse away. Our Ekaete is alive and we do not know him to be linked to any of our persons that he will approach us with a corpse. Where and how he takes his corpse is not our business," he said. Dr Kudirat Sanni is a lecturer at the department of Education foundation, guidance and counselling of the University of Uyo. She has been in Akwa Ibom state for several years, and is familiar with the culture of the people. She said though the culture does not provide any form of punishment for girls whose boy friends die while living with them before they marry, the particular Akwa Ibom culture is aimed at addressing some ills in the society. "Parents are worried over the attitude of some men that carry and keep girls indefinitely, without marriage. It is worrisome and this culture is targeted at discouraging that. When a man knows that when his girlfriend dies in his custody he will be subjected to all the procedures of marriage to the corpse, as he would have done when the lady is alive, he will either leave her alone or arrange to marry her appropriately. The culture is actually helping to minimize the rate at which men date ladies without marriage," she said. |

Monday, May 23, 2011 Roy Hodgson yesterday revealed “surprise” at Peter Odemwingie’s axing by Nigeria as Albion headed for Newcastle without its leading scorer. Hodgson said the dispute between Odemwingie and his international manager that saw the Baggies’ forward dropped for two matches in June took the player and Hawthorns officials “totally and utterly by surprise”. And the head coach revealed Odemwingie was already back in Russia having been earlier released for his summer break. Nigerian Coach, Samson Siasia, dropped the 29-year-old from a friendly against Argentina and an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Ethiopia next month, accusing him of leaving a training camp in March without permission ahead of a friendly with Kenya. But Hodgson said: “I am not aware of any dispute and his agent is not aware of any dispute. Where this has come from, I have no idea. “I presumed if they released him (in March), it was because they felt they could spare him. “It is something that has taken us totally and utterly by surprise and I ’m pretty sure it would have taken Peter by surprise because when we were discussing these matches, his only talk was that he was hoping to be able to miss the friendlies and just play the qualifiers.” The 15-goal top scorer will miss tomorrow’s final game of the season at Newcastle along with Gabriel Tamas after the pair were released early for the summer by Hodgson, who said: “Peter won’t play in this game for a variety of reasons. “He’s got an ankle problem that we have been nursing but equally important is the fact he has played a year and a half’s football without getting a break and has the chance to see his mother in Moscow. “Gabi has a slight knock and then he is playing through the summer with Romania. His holiday, had he stayed until the end of this week, would have been two and a half weeks whereas everyone else is looking at four and a half or five, so it made sense to let him go.” Pablo Ibanez or Abdoulaye Meite will replace Tamas, while Ishmael Miller or Marc- Antoine Fortune will step in for Odemwingie. |
