This is what happens when you do not take the socio-economic well being of your people seriously. The Defence Equipment Sales Authority (DESA), which is part of Defence Equipment and Support (DE&S), the UK Ministry of Defense (MoD) procurement arm, has sold two retired Royal Fleet auxiliary ships to Egypt.

The Royal Fleet auxiliary ships, Fort Austin and Fort Rosalie, were released from service on 31 March this year. The total displacement of the ships is around 23,890 tons and their length is 185 meters.

According to Dearsan's post on Linkedin on 3 October, the Turkish shipyard has secured an agreement with the Nigerian Navy to build two offshore patrol vessels.

Dearsan stated on the social media:

“Our Shipyard will build 2 units of 76 m OPV (76 meter Offshore Patrol Vessel) within the scope of the contract signed with the Nigerian Navy. The OPV’s, which have been configured in line with the Nigerian Navy requirements, will be designed and build entirely within our shipyard’s capabilities and equipped with indigenous systems.”


The vessels are scheduled to be delivered to the Nigerian Navy within 37 months.

The ships will be outfitted with indigenous sensors and systems, according to the agreement, but the details of the systems and subcontractors have not been disclosed by the signatories.

The Nigerian Navy signed a contract with the Turkish shipyard Dearsan covering the delivery of two new 76 m offshore patrol vessels (OPVs) on 3 November.

It released a video of the signing ceremony during which Chief of the Naval Staff Vice Admiral Awwal Gambo said the order is a milestone in achieving the navy's 2021–2030 strategic plan. He described the OPVs as high-endurance vessels capable of maritime interdiction, surveillance, special forces operations, search and rescue, disaster relief, and providing fire support to land forces.

“Dearsan Shipyard was selected based on its track record and the conviction that the shipyard would be able to construct a platform that could be deployed as an OPV in peacetime, while having the capability and flexibility to be quickly outfitted with sensors and weapons to re-role the platform for warfare and maritime defence purposes at a cost-effective price,” he said.

The Nigerian media reported that both OPVs are expected to be delivered within 37 months.

In a statement, Dearsan said the ships will be based on its OPV 76 design, configured according to Nigeria's requirements, built entirely at the shipyard's facilities, and equipped with Turkish systems.

When contacted by Janes , Dearson provided specifications for the Nigerian ships that were slightly larger than the ones listed on its website for the OPV 76. While their length remains the same at 76.8 m, they will have a beam of 12 m rather than 11 m, a draft of 3.3 m rather than 2.9 m, a displacement of 1,250 tonnes rather than the 1,100 tonnes, and a crew of 47 rather than 43.

As can be seen Djibouti is a relatively poor country at a choke point in the Gulf of Eden. Any European ship attempting to enter the Indian Ocean from the Mediterranean has to pass through that choke point. Kenya on the other hand is a safe location in the Indian Ocean to locate a Naval fleet with a rail line that they hope will extend to the Atlantic for logistics movement.

Nigeria’s Chief of Naval Staff, Rear Admiral Auwal Gambo says the Navy has built a vessel known as Seawards Defense Boat-3.

He made the disclosure in Abuja at the weekend, in a chat with Journalists, after he met behind closed doors with President Muhammadu Buhari, shortly before the President departed the country for Glasgow to participate in the United Nations Climate Change Conference.

He said he was in the State House to intimate the President on the development as well as seek his approval to inaugurate the boat later in the year.

“I’m here to seek the blessing of Mr. President for him to honour the Nigerian Navy in commissioning the indigenously built seawards defense boat three, which is one of the three we are building by the Nigerian Navy dockyard staff in Lagos, come December this year,” he said.

Rear Admiral Gambo revealed that he got a positive response for the Nigerian leader.

“His response is positive because it prides us as a nation that we can build something from scratch to finish, by our own shipyard. So, it is a thing of pride to us,” he added.

The Naval Chief said with the successful completion of the boat, the Navy is more prepared to fight pirates.

He further said Nigeria now has the capacity to build the same for other countries.

He said: “It will add to the set of vessels that we have for the protection of the Nigerian maritime territory against piracy, sea robbery, illegal bunkering and all other maritime crimes.

“Already, we have the Democratic Republic of Congo; they are ready and willing to partner with us in ship building and maintenance. We have Badagry Shipyard that wants to build a shipyard in Badagry.

“They are also ready to partner with us in maintenance and construction and most of the countries in the West Coast are definitely going to patronize us.”

The Joint troops of Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK) have neutralised over 37 Boko Haram/ Islamic State in West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists with several others suffering varying degrees of injury.

A statement by the Director Army Public Relations, Brigadier General Onyema Nwachukwu said the troops who have continued to intensify onslaught on terrorists’ enclaves in the North East, as in the early hours of Saturday 30 October 2021, observed the movement of six Gun Trucks within Sambisa Forest general area, which was subsequently located at a settlement near Yuwe.

The statement further said the trucks later moved to a remote location, where they were joined by other terrorist elements, in what seemed like a convergence for a meeting. Over 50 Boko Haram/ ISWAP fighters were observed to have gathered at the meeting.

And after a clear identification of the terrorists’ hideout, the Air Component of OPHK immediately dispatched two aircraft to conduct air interdiction on the location.

The strikes, which were carried out under cover of darkness, were successful and devastating, as battle damage assessment corroborated by local sources revealed that over 37 Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorists were neutralized, while several of them reportedly suffered varying degrees of injury.

In another development, as the aircrafts retreated to base after the air interdiction, the combat air crew located another set of four Gun Trucks about six Kilometers South West of Bama.

The air crew immediately relayed the coordinates of the location of the Gun Trucks to troops of the Land Component at Bama, who promptly engaged the location with Artillery fire bombardment, neutralizing the insurgents’ gun trucks.

The successful joint operations conducted by both the Air and Land Components, with the support of other security agencies under Operation HADIN KAI has yet again underscored the importance of synergy and cooperation in the fight against terrorism and insurgency according to the Nigerian Army.

It's good to know that operations against Terrorist leadership is increasing.

All is now set for the Nigerian Navy,NN to begin the construction and maintenance of ships for countries within the African continent and other countries of the globe, at the Naval Dockyard Limited , Victoria Island Apapa, Lagos.

Already, the Cameroonian Navy has indicated interest to partner with the Nigerian Navy in ship building and maintenance.

The Chief of the Naval Staff, CNS Vice Admiral Awwal Gambo , made the disclosure during the assessment tour of the yard, by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Defence, Musa Istufanus.


The NDL which is the premiere logistics facility of the NN that caters for Third Line or depot level maintenance of NN ships, according to the CNS, had successfully constructed several ships among which was a 31 meter Seaward Defence Boat Project which was commissioned by former President Goodluck Jonathan in 2012 as NNS ANDONI, as well as a 38.9meters Seaward Defence Boat (NNS KARADUWA) which was commissioned by President Muhammadu Buhari at the NDL in 2016.

At the moment, the CNS said a 43 metres Seaward Defence Boat 3 , which is still under construction at the NDL , would be launched in two months. After the launch, he boasted that the Naval Dockyard would be set to produce vessels for any country in the world.



The CNS said, “ We’re in partnership with Bureau Varitas , an international ship building certification company. Once they certify SDB 3,we should be able to build ships for any country in the world.

“Just last week I was approached by the Cameroonian Navy, which indicated interest to partner with us in ship building and maintenance. But we want to perfect our design of the SDB 3. Thereafter, we’re going to launch another which will be called SDB 4. After that, we would be able to tell Cameron and other countries around the West Coast and other parts of Africa that they can come and partner with us to build ships for them”.


Expressing satisfaction on the activities at the NDL, the visiting Permanent Secretary, said the Ministry of Defence would support the Navy to up their game in all ramifications.

He said, “ Now that I understand all the issues on ground, they will get full support of the Ministry of Defence, to up their game. You know if you tell somebody he is doing well he may go and relax. I don’t want to tell them they’re doing very well. We need to do a lot more and I have discussed with them what I think they should be doing more”.


Earlier in his brief to the Permanent Secretary Ministry of Defence , on activities of NDL, the Admiral Superintendent, Naval Dockyard, Rear Admiral Kohath levi

disclosed that the NDL had recorded series of notable achievements in the areas of ship building, marine constructions, ship’s maintenance and fabrications amongst others, since it commenced operations over four decades ago.


He said, “ It is worthy to state that the Yard is currently constructing the 43m long SDB III for the NN. The construction of the SDBs at NDL is a strong indication of the Yard’s capacity at local ship building which can be further developed. It is pertinent to state that the construction of the SDB III has reached an advanced stage and the Yard is working round the clock to ensure the delivery of the project as soon as possible. At present, the key remaining works on the project include system integration, gun installation and outfitting which are currently ongoing.



“Additionally, the Yard has commenced the design phase of the projected Seaward Defence Boat 4. This was premised on the successes recorded on the previously constructed Seaward Defence Boats.

“Also, considering the amount that could be expended on acquiring similar vessel from outside the shore of Nigeria, which is in the range of N5B – N6.5B compared to about N3.4B budgeted for SDB III, it is opined that sustaining the novel shipbuilding capacity of NN would be in the best interest of the Service in particular and Nigeria in general”.

He informed that the Nigerian Navy through the NDL, entered into collaboration with Messrs Epenal Group of Companies for the construction of Glass Reinforced Plastic boats and that since the partnership between the two companies was established, they had jointly constructed over 100 Riverine Patrol Boats, RPB in the Yard.

Levi pointed out that the construction was carried out with the Yard’s facility and equipment, with most of the raw materials locally sourced and most parts of the construction work carried out by NDL staff. The boats according to him, were deployed in the Nigerian brown waters for various NN operations.

Other achievements as highlighted by Rear Admiral Levi , included the construction of six personnel carrier boats for the Ministry of Agriculture and a proposed partnership by the Lagos State Government with the NDL, for the fabrication and construction of some ferry boats.

The NDL according to him , was also “ awarded the contract to construct a 25 – Man House Boat for NN choke point regime in 2019. The concept design for the House boat involves assembly of modules made of 40ft containers. It is worthy of note that the construction of the Houseboat was completed and commissioned into the NN as Naval Security Station 030 (NSS 030). It is important to state that the Houseboat was fully constructed in the Yard by indigenous NDL staff and built using NDL equipment and locally sourced materials. Currently, NHQ is proposing to award the construction of more house boats to the Yard.

“The Yard has been engaged in the docking and repairs of boats and smaller vessels for the Service and other maritime organisations. These vessels include NN01, NNS EKULU, NNS NGURU, NNS OSE, NNS ONITSHA, NNS IBUSA, NNS OSUN, NNS ONITSHA, NNS IKOT ABASI, NNS BENIN, MV SWORDWISH and MV REBIRTH amongst others. Furthermore, the Yard is on the verge of censuring a contract for the repair/overhaul of 4 NIMASA boats, which were hitherto considered to be beyond economic repairs. The defects of the boats have been identified and articulated by the Yard with a view to carrying out comprehensive repairs on them.

“ The NDL in partnership with HABTOB Global Ventures is currently constructing 2 x 500 ton Self – Propelled Barges for the NN. One of the barges is earmarked for storage and supply of AGO while the other will supply fresh water to ships at sea. The project commenced in 2019 and it is projected to act as a force multiplier for the NN in her bid to continually maintain presence at sea.

“NNS CENTENARY, one of the two Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPV) acquired between 2012 and 2017 from China was docked on Tuesday, September 22, 2020 , for replacement of her generators. The replacement has been carried out by a special team of NN personnel constituted by Naval Headquarters and representatives of the Chinese Company that manufactured the vessel. Currently, the vessel is awaiting painting and undocking. Also carried out on the vessel by NDL are underwater maintenance/repairs which include servicing of sea chest valves, fabrication and replacement of mud boxes, removal of sacrificial anodes for replacement, scraping barnacles on the ship’s underwater part, sand blasting as well as application of protective coatings on the ship’s underwater hull.

“ It is pertinent to state that huge resources were saved from the exercise which was carried out in NDL, as an estimated sum of about $5m was to be spent on the vessel if she was taken out of Nigeria compared to a paltry sum of less than $200,000.00 expended on her in NDL. It is pertinent to mention that the sister vessel, NNS UNITY is currently berthed in the Yard awaiting docking as soon as NNS CENTENARY is undocked”.

“ In addition, NDL recently fabricated 10 units of gun pedestals, shields and mounts for 12.7mm Browning machine gun for the NN. The fabrication entailed precision machining to achieve both training and elevation parameters and to withstand the recoil effects of the gun which fires 1,200 rounds per minute. The pedestal shields and gun mounts for the gun were hitherto imported from abroad at about $4,000 (about N1,920,000.00 at an exchange rate of N480 to USD1) per piece. However, the Yard intervened and produced each at less than N900,000.00 per unit. This development saved the nation huge economic losses and further enhanced local capacity development.

“The Yard is currently carrying out precision machining of a 5 MW stone crusher rotor belonging to Messrs Dangote’s Ibese Cement Factory in the Heavy Engineering Workshop. This intricate job which was hitherto done abroad further attests to the confidence being reposed on NDL’s ability for quality work delivery by companies in Nigeria.

“The Yard carries out machining of shafts for naval and merchant vessels. Currently, the machining of a 5.875m (length) x 20mm (diameter) shaft belonging to a client is being carried out in the Yard. This is against importing a new shaft from abroad and helps in saving foreign exchange for the country.

“The NDL has been partnering with Messrs Dorman Long in the construction of heavy engineering materials for the oil and gas sectors in Nigeria. For instance, a substantial part of the Bonga Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) unit was constructed in NDL. Currently, NDL in partnership with Messrs Dorman Long is constructing a gas platform for production and processing of gas.

“ One of the objectives of local ship building is to build capacity and domesticate as many parts of the ship building as possible. To this end, it is gladdening to state that NDL has successfully domesticated fabrication of many of the Seaward Defence Boat parts and accessories. These include water/air tight doors/hatches, fire rated/sound proof interior doors and aluminium roofing amongst others. All these accessories and components have been fabricated in the Yard using both human and material resources available locally.

Very skeptical about this. 45m Patrol Ships are exactly what he Navy builds in their shipyard - OPV-45 would be redundant unless the NN does not have trust in the Project. And a single Fast Attack vessel would not make sense if not part of a larger order.

Agreed, If true,where the heck does a 45 m ship and a 70 to 80 meter 'mini' corvette stand financially and logistically? Better to use scarce resources and get a full sea-going frigate while building local SDBs,or get ships logistically similar to the our p18 OPVs.

I means NNS Unity and Centenary are larger than this Israeli corvette.The p18s are longer by 20 m and displace twice the weight! Yes,the Israeli ship may be armed but If you are going for a missile armed ship just go for a full frigate that can go far out to sea.

Things do not work like that, combat aircraft only have about 10-20(max) minutes over the target area if not refueled mid-air.

That's for pure jet engine aircrafts, super tucanos are turbo- props,very different. The tucanos have an endurance of 2.5 hrs on internal fuel and 7hrs with drop tanks.

The A29s must be causing serious havoc,imagine 2-4 of them sitting over a battlefield for hours,or the hours long interdiction they can operate.Overlaping tucanos will be a very painful sight for the enemy.The only way ISWAP will survive the onslaught is obviously to attack the airport. As has been said all 12 were deployed from Kainji to the north-east, obviously Maiduguri. That airport must be well protected.The closer the tucanos are to the insurgents the longer the times span of CAS they give our troops.

The Rooivalk is an example of Africa's inability to work with each other. That bird should be all over the continent as it's main attack helio. No way it would be in that state if it was the EU.

Some commentator's are going overboard over the IFV thing. Someone asked which do you prefer between the military acquiring an IFV or MRAP. Nobody said an IFV is a game changer. I said an IFV is more suitable because it gives us fire superiority over the enemy in a battle. Do we have to lose soldiers because we know how to use HMG's? Why don't the US GI take on the Taliban head on at all times since they, (Taliban) use ak47s. Why call in warthogs with 30mm gathling guns? It's because the lives of their troops is precious to them. I give no apologies, we don't have to engage bokoharam on equal terms. Drop the MRAPs and pile on the IFV's. We can use a few MRAPs forward of IFVs in a patrol.
Again the comparison is between MRAPs and IFVs.

I have said this before...we have btr3 and btr4, with remote weapon system....they have 30mm guns, army refused to use it and wielded 12.7mm gun that they will be gambling with boko haram and offers no technical advantage. The only good thing about the st1 against boko haram, is if it has fragmentation rounds. I think the cost of 30mm round is the issue with the army and most ifv, come with 30mm round. Truthfully we have lots of equipments that would give us clear advantage against boko haram, and they have never fired a shot against boko haram, o always ask myself why.

As you said,most of the other rounds are made in-house, but not 30mm AFAIK. It's easier for them to modify to lower calibers than to buy 30mm,but this means we lose fire superiority over the enemy. Simply set up an assembly line for 30mm and induct the calibre into the army's weapon system.No need begging the airforce.

Arch-rivals US and Russia do not get many opportunities to use & test each other’s military equipment. However, an uncommon incident was sighted on US soil earlier this year when the Russian-origin Mi-17 helicopter was spotted in North California.

It was sometime in May when Dan Moore, a member of the Civil Air Patrol, had unusual visits by not one but two mysterious helicopters in his farm in North Carolina.

First, a Russia-made Mi-17 Hip-type helicopter made an emergency landing, and later, a Bell 407 helicopter arrived at the location carrying the required replacement parts.

“I received a call from my neighbor saying, ‘Hey, did you know there is a helicopter in your front yard?’ Moore said while describing the incident. “Wait, what? A helicopter? In my yard? I was confused, but also primed and ready to return the favor when I figured out somebody had made an emergency landing at my farm”, he was quoted as saying by the Air Facts Aviation Journal.

The Mi-17 helicopter involved in this incident had a tan and brown camouflage scheme. It also had a big section painted in black on the right side of the fuselage behind the exhaust for one of its two turboshaft engines. Moore also recorded a video of the helicopter which had landed on his farm.



Even though the photographs or the video do not clearly indicate any markings to identify the operator, the helicopter did exhibit a host of military functions such as a sensor ball turret under the right side of the cockpit along with supplemental armor panels which were present on both sides of the helicopter.

A large particle separator, which is useful for conducting operations in sandy or dusty environments, was fitted on the front of the helicopter’s two engine intakes. Its tail boom was covered in antennas, including a platter-type one typically associated with high-frequency satellite communications (SATCOM) systems.



The crew chief told Moore that the helicopter would need to stay on his property till it could get repaired. Soon enough, a Bell 407 arrived at the location with the required replacement parts which could get the helicopter back into action.

This helicopter was a dark grey one and had an uncanny similarity to the mysterious trio which was spotted flying over and around Los Angeles in January 2021.

The similarities included the same “O WING” or “egg-beater” type ultra-high-frequency (UHF) SATCOM antenna on the tail boom and a pair of blade-type antennas under the forward fuselage.

These types of antennas are used for the transmission of high-frequency radio signals. The helicopter also had high landing skids, commonly found on choppers used by law enforcement agencies or the military.

The Bell 407 unloaded its cargo and left almost simultaneously. The Mi-17 was repaired and left for its destination the following morning. According to Moore, the crew did not state the organization to which the helicopter belonged. “These guys were all former military…it was all very hush-hush”, he said.


Who Was Operating Mi-17?
When the Bell 407 helicopters were spotted flying over Los Angeles, TheDrive news portal speculated that the operator could be the Aviation Technology Office (ATO), a highly secretive unit of the US Army. It is very likely that the Mi-17 involved in this incident is also operated by the ATO.

This speculation can be further backed by the fact that the ATO, previously known as Flight Concepts Division (FCD), shares strong ties with the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). The CIA is also known to operate many foreign-made aircraft, including variants of the Mi-17.
