hopefully the UAV champions will take this as a win... because it is a win....10 CH4's(if confirmed) will greatly improve situational awareness for personnel on the front line. 30-40 hours loiter time , with precision weapons (AR-1 or AR-2) should reduce the instances of ambush suffered by military personnel. We need more though, at least 40 - 50 of these; 10-15 always operational 10-15 as standby(take over from operational UAV's after 1 month; maintenance schedule) 10-15 for external engagements(coastal/west Africa/Sahel) 10-15 for continuous training, eventually no military patrol team/ strike team in Nigeria should leave base without the cover of a designated UAV ready to be re-directed to specified coordinates. Although we need many more small and specialized tactical UAV's, for example: tethered drones for base perimeter security, the super camps have made bases a lot safer but having tethered UAV's in camp to provide additional layer of perimeter security wouldn't hurt.
Now, talking about one weak link we will definitely encounter with using these drones: precision munitions; the military needs to start looking at ways of reverse engineering the AR 1 missile that they got with the CH3 drones, they definitely will been acquiring more air to ground missiles along with the new purchase of the Ch4 UAV's but judging from the videos released by DHQ about 70% of the strikes are dumb bombs, they are accurate enough but boosting the level of precision strikes to 60% will greatly increase the efficiency of the CH4 platform. AR-1 missile should and must be reverse engineered, the newer and lighter AR-2 should also be looked into. AR-1 is a replica of the AGM-114 Hellfire. The military need to cut down the cost of these precision munitions in order to strike even more effectively. MOU's between the military and technical colleges, private universities, steel/aluminum fabrication companies, private software companies should help speed development. Some of the components of an air to ground missile like the Hellfire or AR-1 include, laser seeker, rocket propulsion(military already has this figured out), guidance(motherboard, circuits, semiconductors and software) this section can be replicated using Raspberry pi or Arduino boards. The warhead section, well, they can figure this one out too. Point is once one is disassembled by a group of very curious engineers the smartest physics students working with capable software engineers, they should be able to replicate it using mostly off the shelf components; the replicated missile might be larger at first but so long as it works, they can figure out how to make the next one smaller. Nigeria has all the required professional personnel needed for a project like this.

I agree 1000%. The MOD should set aside a percentage of budget for missiles tech,maybe work with South Africa. Getting a seeker head will allow us develop local,air to air, air to ground,surface to surface and anti ship missiles. The reduced costs will allow more frequent exercises in weapons deployment by the three arms. Also,a swarm of SDB3/4 with local made anti ship missiles would be a last line of independent defence at sea. Propulsion is partially done,we really need seeker heads.

There would never be a great power war. All the major countries understand this. There will never be economic sanctions on a great power that will lead to direct war between great powers. The reality of MAD makes certain of this.

If the Cuban missile crisis did not lead to war between the US & the USSR, nothing would make today's world powers go to war with each other.

So the kind of military confrontation you are describing above is not going to occur. That's more of a great power confrontation.

Which leaves only conflict against lower peer countries who might have some of the capabilities you have described.

LICW, insurgency, terrorism and revolutionary wars.

Hence the future of warfare is network centric. The army that can pick up and deploy technology faster has a higher probability of victory in the warfare of the future.

Concerning MAD( Mutually Assured Destruction). It takes one mad man to launch one nuke to toss (MAD) into the gutter. There have been many mad leaders in the past.

The future of warfare is not drones,the future of warfare cannot be a platform but rather a system. In our age it is AI enhanced electronic/spectrum warfare with space being the high ground. Sending the enemy back to the 1940's while maintaining your advantage will win you the war against a peer adversary. Very early on in a major peer war, kinetic kill missiles will take out all near earth satellites leaving deep space units. Submarines will cut ALL enemy deep sea optical fibre cables. The airwaves will be saturated with hostile electronic broadcast. Drones will be taken out by hacking, disorientation, disruption of communication with base station using active EW; or Passive radar which will pick up its communication and vector SAM batteries, fighter aircraft or ground infantry with a shoulder mounted SAM to the target drone. EMP weapons will be everywhere. Drones will find it hard to survive such hostile EM environments unless closely followed by an aerial support unit with ISTAR,SIGINT. However, such units will be subject to being hit by long range AA missiles.

That should be our target now, not building more SDBs. My opinion.

Under the Buhari Administration, the Nigerian Navy witnessed extensive procurement of platforms of different types and mix. The government funded the procurement of 267 flat bottomed, assault, rigid hull, riverine patrol and whaler boats. Importantly, about 170 of these riverine patrol boats were built in-country, thus complementing indigenous shipbuilding capacity, employment generation and skills acquisition.


Following the successful commissioning of a second locally built Seaward Defence Boat (SDB) NNS KARADUWA in 2016, local-shipbuilding is being further enhanced through the indigenous construction of a 43m SDB and two logistic supply vessels which are programmed to join the service later this year 2020.

The navy has also deployed 12 Naval Security Stations along the nation’s coastline in areas prone to illegalities under the Choke Point Regime and Control operations.

Additionally, this administration facilitated the procurement of 25 fast attack craft, seaward defence boats and inshore patrol craft. Furthermore, one survey ship, one offshore patrol vessel and one landing ship tank are being expected to join the Nigerian Navy fleet soon while one AW 139 Leonardo helicopter has already been delivered.

says we should not have drones. In fact, we already had drones before the debate here.Both surveillance and armed. It is all about the doctrine of use viz a viz other platforms,and current threats. Just like turkey, other nations use drones for hard to reach or high value targets(HVT). That's the doctrine behind their use. A tank is a HVT,so is a Radar site;but you dont start using drones to fire missiles at rag tag terrorists carrying ak47 running in the bush when it can be more than accomplished with helicopter gunships or rockets.That's like trying to kill a fly with a baseball bat when you have a newspaper.
IF you want them for surveillance ,in the current situation I am all for it. Bring in the drones.

saw some videos of the strikes on tanks, precision strikes on them, looked like target practice one after the other... like some video game...

Today's modern armoured units cannot and should not go about without mid-range mobile anti-aircraft missile defence, and signal jamming units,it's just suicide.

SDB3 will be a good platform for the development of future home made missile boats.

The JF 17 is a fighter jet that is fit for purpose in our region. None of our neighbours have anything close. It's function is multirole not air superiority.Our air force is a force,not a museum or display showpiece. We don't fly jets but fight with them. Many of our east,south and central neighbours have su27and 3x but can't maintain a fighting airforce with those plane because of the cost,hence when a conflict breaks out they have to hire mercenary pilots and engineers. Really,how many sub-saharan air forces have engaged in as many sorties as our air force has in the last few years? We buy planes we can fly and fight at anytime with; not to pound our chest at on the ground. The Su series are twin engine jets,that's twice the fuel,twice the maintenance cost and a lot of down time.our airforce will struggle with its maintenance with its budget,and most African airforces are grounded with no ability whatsoever because they have it.
Better to fly and fight with a JF17 than have a grounded Su27,3x.

We currently have the capabilities, and if you look at the amount of small vessels we currently have on order from France, Vietnam and Nigeria, it is unlikely we would see an SDB 4.

SDB3 would show greatly our capabilities.

A ship like this FOULADOU, Senegal Navy would be the next likely step.

I agree. We cannot allow all those naval engineers to down tools and look for other jobs after SDB3. Their knowledge is vital to our ship building industry.Protecting their Jobs should be of National security.

Finally, but definitely not going to be the last picture, SDB 3 is taking shape. A modern design for a modern ship.

The construction of SDB 3 shows Nigerian has the capability to build ships of at least 80 meters in length.

SDB 3 also gives us an idea of what a future Nigerian Navy OPV would look like.

On the armament of SDB3 it is currently unknown the type of main gun she would carry. The 30mm is solid, but a 57mm seen in the second render would allow the Navy attack land targets which are close to shore.

Similar to our operations in Liberia and Sierra-leone.

Thanks for the pictures,i can never tire of them. I think SDB3 will need thicker grade steel around the Gun placement and down its spine for it to carry a 57mm Gun.From what i see i guess they opted for 30mm.

Agreed. Concerning deploying to new FOB's near enemy territory, I would have suggested that the soldiers have artillery fire support ahead of them. Interestingly,it seems that the boys that we lost are NAF- Sf. If true,this is a bit worrying. It suggests that the Air force is more determined than the Army is to get the Job done and inter-service co-ordination is sketchy.

It could also be the Cloud shadow drone,it is very similar in appearance to Wing Loong-10 and the Wing Loong-10 may have been developed from it.

Why not night patrols? Equip the troops for patrol with NVG, thermal camera's,and IR torches/illuminators.They will have a huge tactical advantage with night patrols. Tell me what you think.

In a nutshell the chief security officer and Governor of Borno is saying that the top brass are milking the war for money at the cost of the blood of soldiers. If true it cannot be allowed to continue. The status of the Governor demands an investigation.
