Hmm. Right from the medieval ages, people always viewed cats differently. Some viewed them as sources of good luck, some viewed them as being plain evil. Some just saw them as animals. It's the same today. Some view cats as good, others as evil. This is not limited to Nigeria AT ALL.

Well, it's very possible they "hate" your behavior of ignoring them. So they're going to discuss your matter. But the actual underlying truth is that at least one of them has a crush on you, thus leading them to discuss about you. (This is more likely if you're fine, quiet and intelligent to some extent)
You can decide getting a bit more friendly with them and they'll eventually be extremely friendly with you. But if you feel their character is a problem, then just stay away from them.
