Politics › ’50 Senators’ Accompany Saraki To Tribunal For Corruption Trial by dridowu(op): 10:56am On Sep 22, 2015
The President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki, has arrived the courtroom of the Code of Conduct Tribunal in Abuja to face trial over a 13-count charge of corruption levelled against him by the Code of Conduct Bureau.

Mr. Saraki arrived the tribunal premises at 9:32 a.m., accompanied by about 50 senators and some members of the House of Representatives, his spokesperson, Yusuph Olaniyonu, told PREMIUM TIMES.

Mr. Olaniyonu however declined further comments, saying he was already seated in the courtroom.

Some of the senators in court are Theodore Orji, Sam Egwu, Ike Ekweremadu, Shaba Lafiaji, Aliyu Wamakko, Rafiu Ibrahim, Tayo Alasoadura, Hamma Misau, Samuel Anyanwu, Sabi Aliyu Abdullahi, among others.

The Chairman of the Tribunal came into the courtroom at 10.32 a.m, and apologised for the delay in the commencement of proceeding. He said the tribunal was sorting out some matters.

This newspaper learnt that the Senate President and his supporters first converged on the National Assembly early on Tuesday morning from where they took off in a convoy of buses for the tribunal.

One of the senators, who asked not to be named said he and his colleagues decided to provide cover for the senate president to prevent him from being arrested and humiliated by the police.

A supporter of the Senate President, now also inside the courtroom told PREMIUM TIMES, “We are already seated. No shaking. The plan is to humiliate the man, not minding if they break the law or violate the procedure.

“We have nothing to fear. After Saraki has exercised his fundamental human rights in relevant courts, we are here to to show the lies contained in the charges.”

Mr. Saraki had on Monday released a statement, saying he was now ready to attend his trial, days after he battled frantically to use the courts to halt the trial.

The tribunal had ruled Monday that Mr. Saraki must appear before it at 10am today.

Mr. Saraki failed to appear before the tribunal during Monday’s sitting despite an arrest warrant issued against him by the tribunal last Friday.
He is facing charges bordering on corruption and false assets declaration.

The tribunal opened the trial last Friday but the senate president failed to show up. He was represented by a team of lawyers led by a former president of the Nigeria Bar Association, Joseph Daudu.

Consequently, the Chairman of the Tribunal, Justice Danladi Umar, ordered the Inspector General of Police, Solomon Arase, to effect the arrest of the senate president and produce him before the Tribunal on Monday.

Mr. Saraki’s lawyers immediately filed a suit at the Court of Appeal for a stay of execution.

Despite the appeal, the Tribunal resumed the trial on Monday without the senate president appearing.
At the hearing, Mr. Saraki’s lawyers objected to the sitting contending that the Tribunal was incompetently constituted.

They argued that the 1999 Constitution provided that the Tribunal can only sit with three of its members, namely the chairman and two members present as against two – chairman and one member – which was the case when the trial resumed.

However, Mr. Umar responded by referring to the Interpretation Act, which says the chairman and one member could sit during any trial.
The police had said weekend that it did not receive any order on Friday requesting it to arrest Mr. Saraki.

The support him in prayers yet they fails to tell him that he should go and face the law since Saraki has claim to be clean.
IMHO Sarakai should be ready to face the law if he is sincerely clean so that APC/FG can be put to shame.
Lot of people before Saraki have face CCT some came out clean while some are convicted, and this will also continue after Saraki.
Saraki should not be afraid rather he should support the anti-corruption crusade .

Politics › Saraki Loyalists Hire 1500 Islamic Clerics by dridowu(op):
Supporters and loyalists of the Senate
President, Dr. Bukola Saraki have
engaged in vigil and fasting. One of
the conveners of the prayers, Mr.
Kayode Yusuf, who is popularly called
‘Maja,’ in an interview with our
correspondent in Ilorin, the Kwara
State capital on Saturday, said prayer
sessions were being held all over the
state, especially in the Ilorin
motropolis. He said he had mobilised
over 500 Muslim clerics while about
1,000, including the Chief Iman of
Ilorin, Mohammad Solihu were praying
in different areas in the state for
Saraki’s victory. “Yusuf, who is the
convener of ‘Maja Elders Forum’, called
on President Buhari to intervene and
prevent the polity from being over-
heated. He expressed the hope that
Saraki’s travail would soon be over.
Yusuf said, “We in Kwara are
powerless. The only thing we can do is
to support him (Saraki) with prayers.
We have no money, soldiers, police or
any other security apparatus. We are
just ordinary citizens of Kwara and
Nigeria. But we in Kwara, especially in
Ilorin, believe in the power of prayers.
“All of us in Ilorin, including the Chief
Imam of Ilorin, are involved in the
prayers. Saraki is our leader. He must
not come down. Within the short time
that he was elevated as the Senate
President, we know what we have
benefited from him. “I have mobilised
more than 500 Imans and over 1,000
others are praying in different areas.
They have been praying and fasting.
Even the women are praying for him.
Saraki is our benefactor. Even the
uneducated do not want anything to
happen to Bukola Saraki. They are not
sleeping but are also praying. The
prayers will last till Saraki’s ordeal is
over.” In a related development, a
coalition of civil society organisations
under the aegis of Heritage Centre and
the National Association of Nigerian
Students have threatened to lead
mass protests to foreign embassies in
Abuja to protest alleged political
vendetta being carried out against the
Senate President.

Crime › Nigerian Fraudster Conned Students Out Of £1.5m Online by dridowu(op): 5:47pm On Sep 18, 2015
A NIGERIAN national who helped defraud hundreds of UK students online has been ordered to pay back almost £630,000 after admitting she made £1.2million from her crimes.

On Monday (Sept 14), the Old Bailey heard how Ruth Smith-Ajala, 46, from Lambeth was jailed in December 2013 for her part in conning students out of more than £1.5m.

Students were sent emails inviting them to update details on their student loan account via a link to a bogus website.

When the site was accessed by the unsuspecting victims, a cyber crime gang gained unauthorised access to their bank accounts, stealing large amounts of money.

Smith-Ajala used her share of the cash to buy products in the UK, which she then shipped out for sale at a wholesaler in Lagos, Nigeria, that she owns.

During her trial, Smith-Ajala tried to convince the court that she was running a legitimate business but she was ultimately found guilty of conspiracy to launder money and mortgage fraud.

The mortgage fraud related to seven houses that Smith-Ajala was renting out in Gravesend, Northfleet and Chatam, in Kent; Grays, in Essex; and Catford, in London.

In conjunction with the investigation, specialist detectives from the Met’s Central Criminal Finance Team (CFT) launched a financial investigation. They and the Crown Prosecution Service obtained a restraint order for the properties and Smith-Ajala’s banks accounts were frozen, prohibiting her from selling the houses and hiding the money.

As a result of the confiscation proceedings, Smith-Ajala will now have to sell the houses, using the profits and rent money to pay the confiscation sum.

Detective inspector Pete Ward, of the CFT, said: "We won’t stop at seeing criminals convicted for their crimes - we will also make them pay back the money they have taken from their victims.

"It is ironic that Smith-Ajala helped defraud hundreds of students while paying for one of her own children to be privately educated.

The 46-year-old has just three months to pay back the money she obtained, or face a further five years in prison. If she doesn’t pay the money by the time she is out of prison, the order will remain and her finances will be scrutinized to ensure she continues to pay up.

Crime › Two Nigerians Among Four Held In Online Matrimonial Fraud Case In India by dridowu(op): 5:34pm On Sep 18, 2015
HYDERABAD: Four persons, including two
Nigerians, were arrested from Delhi by
Hyderabad Police for allegedly cheating
a city-based woman to the tune of Rs
15.62 lakh in a case of online
matrimonial fraud, police said today.
The Nigerian offenders--Igbute Kingsley
Ucheka alias Tony and Igbute Jude
Nwabulor, and two others — Santosh
Kumar from Bihar and Dhirendra Kumar
from Uttar Pradesh — were
apprehended on September 13 in Delhi
and brought on transit warrant to
Hyderabad today, Joint Commissioner
of Police (Detective Department) T
Prabhakar Rao told reporters here.
"The modus operandi of the group is
that they register themselves as
prospective bridegrooms on
matrimonial websites using fictitious
names. They pose as high-profile
businessmen or professionals staying
abroad and then target women,
particularly widows or singles, who are
looking for a suitable life partner, on
the pretext of marriage alliance," the
JCP said.
Once the victims fall into their trap,
they start squeezing money from them
saying that they are sending some
expensive gifts, which the victim need
to claim through the Customs, etc, the
senior police officer said.
"For this purpose, the Nigerian kingpins
lay down an extensive trap with the
help of their Indian associates, who
provide them bank accounts on
fictitious names in different banks, so
that the victim can deposit the
amounts in these accounts and the
Nigerians withdraw the amount," he
said.
In this particular case, the accused
cheated a middle-aged woman from
the city, Rao said adding that seven
victims have so far lodged complaints
with police, who are carrying out the
investigation and trying to ascertain
the total amount of fraud.
In June this year, Cyberabad Police had
arrested two persons, including a
Nigerian national, for allegedly duping
a woman school teacher of Rs 18 lakh
on the pretext of marrying her.
