Fergie is going for that Carling cup match as if on some personal quest to thwart City's ambition, I hope say legs no go break for this match?  grin grin grin
Anyway, this is playing into our hands very nicely for our match on sunday. The missing link in that team methinks is old man Scholes but he might just be able to rouse himself for yet another last hurrah.

Maybe I'm being harsh on Vela, but he doesn't seem to be improving, despite playing more consistently over the past couple of weeks. The point is, the strikers we have are not the envy of anybody, not even Tottenham!
From the way Arsene plays him, it is obvious he doesn't depend on him much yet, even though Vela also doesn't seem driven to succeed like Theo is. My younger brother and I always joke that if Vela is as driven as Theo is, we would have a Pato type player on our hands, for all the stick I give Theo, I do recognise the hard work he puts in and I only wonder if that would be good enough as Justin Hoyte also could never be faulted for effort and we tarried so long only to give up when we should have been reaping the profits at 23+.

I just don't want to see the same happen with Theo particularly when you have a prodigious talent of Wilshere's abilities you could give all that game time to. Vela will come good like Diaby (hopefully earlier) when he gets his acts together and starts playing to win as he can play the basic Arsenal pass and move (ball to feet) game which Theo struggles at.

haba Debo, how many games actually has the lad played? he is not even played through the center, came back at the beginning of the season from a recurring injury as well. At 20, Arsene would be nigh silly to sell the boy when he knows what he is capable of. He has started only 5 games in all competitions and been a substitute in 11 (of which most are less than 10 minute cameos). That says a lot about how much game time he is getting when Theo who has been injured for quite some time has started the same number of games (5) with 7 sub appearances.

With the above analysis, we have barely three strikers who we can call on, so we need one more so why won't he buy?  huh
I disagree with your assertion on Eduardo - he is far better than Vela and it's the Mexican who should lose his place to an extra striker.
post the Invincible's era, Arsene has always had 2 main strikers and then up and coming youth so he won't sell Vela now who is just 20, Dudu is the one who should be doing the business now as RVP's deputy, its a bit unfortunate but it is Dudu in the firing line with Bendtner coming a close 2nd.

Are yu really disappointed Debo? any striker Arsene buys must be an improvement over Eduardo (seems he is the one whose space will be taken by an extra striker), I think he probably has an agreement to sign Chamack in the summer and wouldn't want to go back to Bordeaux now after what happened last summer.

Who first met Ronaldo? grin grin grin  How may other players has Wenger told the media he got to first before those players made their decisions to go elsewhere?
There was none of them he claimed to have signed who later went to another club. Anyone can get to a player first after all Galindo went on trial at Everton before we bought him. You might not be able to agree a deal with the club and there is no shame in that, it depends on how much you rate the player. Arsene says he has put in bids for over 400 players but only ended up signing about 200 which is why he doesn't go mouthing off to the press.

Rio I recall had already been to the UCL semis before Fergie signed him no? its too early to make a call on Smalling, Senderos at his age was already world cup bound and setting a record in the UCL for clean sheets.
If you had Bartley, Djouror and Nordtveit, why was Arsene chasing Smalling for the past 3 months?

Duduspace's 2-inch hard-on refuses to come down over the loss of Smalling.Only an irredeemable golliwog like you will bring up Mikel Obi into this discussion.
Good morning.
If you had so much faith in your ÿoung CBs, then why was Cheapskate Wenger chasing him  (Smalling) all over the window?
If I recall,it might have something to do with being cover for either Gallas or Vermaelen, since the United reject (and equally cheap) Silvestre and the mental case (also bought on a free)  Campbell can't seem to have a hang of things as shown in the loss to Stoke.
Djorou?I laugh in whatever. The Djorou that is marginally better than Senderos?Tell me seriously that you actually have faith in that slowpoke.
I know you're looking for any reason at all to console yourself over the loss. But it's too early to be making no sense.
Idiots like you still are pointing to the debt thing again.Yet we could afford the 5m (according to you) and pip you to the signing after you were supposedly in pole position to sign him while your broke-backside boss was looking for the regular 125-350,000 pound signing.Inspite of your club's "profitability".
Your talk is becoming incoherent. What did you have last night for drugs?
Abeg crawl back into that brothel you got chased out of this morning with your talk of hard ons and what not, are you missing something or having some adverse ecstasy reaction? What has Smalling done to be rated a star? nothing, he got beat with Tottenham 2-nada yesterday and our reserve of U18s beat a Fulham reserves team with him in it 3-0 so he is no one man riot squad.
Wenger did not chase anybody about do get your facts right, would you also say that Arsenal was chasing Chamak about? Arsene was interested in the player true enough but we don't conduct our transfer dealings in the press unlike Manure, we only talk when its signed, sealed and delivered. We all know who had a red face after Ramsey and also got disappointed with Mikel.

The ones that were disgraced by Stoke, Man City and in the FA Youth Cup or the ones that finished 6th in the Reserves Premier League last season?
Pain ke? if we got Verminator who is making an immediate impact at 10M, I don't think Smalling should be worth more than 5M as I doubt he could make an immediate impact, didnt he just get embarrased by Tottenham yesternite? despite being paired with Hangeland who is quality and he was in the team that our reserves beat 3-0 earlier in the season so there is no reason for any of our players to fear him.

We already have Bartley who is also british and younger, Djorou who should be back from injury soon and Nordtveit on loan at Nurnberg with the Nazis.  The typical age of a reserve CB in Arsenal is <18 years, anyone above 18 will be out on loan such as Nordtveit and Hoyte, Smalling at the same age as Bartley is, was fighting relegation in a none league club.
I guess Arsene wanted him as just another decent English player on the books and possibly wasn't willing to pay up to 8M for him.

The person who has been very disappointing is Vela - he has been abysmal. Playing regularly since November but little impact.
its okay to give him that excuse, but Rosicky wasn't as bad as this even after a year plus out. Theo is lacking in some basic ability. How many full games exactly has Vela played? he is usually coming on as a sub, he doesn't mess up our build up play the way Theo does and he is still able to combin well with the full back behind him.
European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga)Re: Arsenal Fan Thread: For Gunners Only. by duduspace(m): 5:25pm On Jan 26, 2010
Arsene is backing Theo

“There is no player in the world who can be out for two months, come back and be outstanding,” said Wenger. “He doesn't exist, unfortunately.
“It’s not like you switch an engine on and off in the car. It demands competition and the most important thing for Theo now is not to be injured for five or six weeks. Then you will see a different Walcott.”
Walcott will be one of many talented young Englishmen on show at Villa Park on Wednesday. Martin O’Neill has Gabriel Agbonlahor, Ashley Young and James Milner at his disposal and the latter has made notable strides this season.
Milner looks a shoo-in for England’s World Cup squad this summer and Wenger expects Walcott to make a similar improvement in the years to come.
“Theo is 20. Milner is 24 - give him [Walcott] three years and then you will see,” said Wenger.
“There is a massive difference between 20 and 24 - that is where you see the evolution of a player.
“People forget how young Theo is. I believe he has improved a lot but this season he has been unlucky.
“He has played three games this year. You cannot be at the top of your game for a striker with three games in six months - that does not exist. He needs a bit of luck.”
He must see something in training I'm yet to see on the pitch, maybe I'm being too hard on the boy? but he should be considered and treated as a first teamer now with all those first team games abi. undecided
Anyway Arsene still knows.

No chance - the player who scored was closer to Traore - should Denilson avoid other runners from midfield when Traore should've been tracking someone who was virtually IN THE BOX?

Dude what are you talking about? A player in the box less than 2 feet from Traore and DENILSON should've been the one on him? huh
Yu're missing my point, I was talking about when the situation deveoped in front of the box, yu are only looking at the end, putting in last ditch tackles only a few inches from the goal line might work in some instances, in others you just end up shooting into your own net just like Verminator against chelsea.

debosky:
Even for the case of Denilson chasing Sidibe, at least he CHASED till he faded out due to exhaustion. Did Traore even TRY to follow the Stoke player into the box? NO - he just watched him walk past without doing A THING!!

No chance - Sol went close to the player and was beaten by an EXCELLENT cross. Traore didn't even TRY to follow the man, but just let him walk through!!!!
I did agree that maybe Traore gave up too easily or chose the wrong option in trying to play Whitehead off but at that point there wasnt much more he could do.

The delivery wasn't special, even if it was, if Traore had done his bit then we can say.

3. Clearly and undoubtedly the fault of Traore. NO DEFENDER allows a player to run across him, free and unmarked for goal while daftly trying to play offside. Traore could CLEARLY see that Silvestre and Campbell would be playing him onside, so it was CRIMINAL not to follow the player in and watch. Traore was closer to Etherington than Denilson was, so it made all the sense for Denilson to call out for Traore to do his job and DEFEND.

In the final analysis, our toothless performance in front of goal cost us.
@Debo

Watch goal 3 again, I like Denilson but he was culpable in 2 of those goals (I watched them on the FA highlights yesterday pausing at the various transitions starting from when we lost possesion). Goal 3 was all but in once Etherington got the ball from Sidibe (who nicked it off Eastmond who was caught in possesion) Denilson could see Etherington out wide but chose to let him go and was pointing at him. (to whoever I don't know cos there was no one there).

I agree Traore gave up too soon on the ball, but with the quality of delivery Etherington put in the box, I'm not so sure Traore would have been able to do anything about it. Blaming Traore for the 3rd would be akin to blaming Big Sol for the second. The point is, the players who put in those crosses had all the time in the world to put in quality deliveries into the 6 yard box.

I agree totally with the part in bold, we were never good at defending and once we lost the initiative in attack (thanks mostly to Theo) we were sitting ducks.

Sharraaaaaaaaaap!

See your mouth like no goals were conceded from his wing. The only goal y'all conceded while he was on the pitch was from a throw-in, so of course no goal was conceded from his wing.

Still, he was the worst player on the pitch today, and conversely, Etherington was the best with the exception of Fuller.

When I used to play as a centre-back long time ago, my coach taught me that if I am ever drawn out to the fullback position, it is imperative not to stand-off crosses, and do everything humanly possible to stop the winger delivering the ball. Thank God for Sol Campbell, otherwise Arsenal would have conceded 3 or 4 goals from Coquelins wing today. . . the amount of time Stoke got behind him was abominable.

He better not be a right-back by trade.

If he wasnt so young, I would write him off already.
You are yarning too much opata, why not write off Sagna on the strength of one game against Chelsea  where 2 of the goals came from his wing?  undecided

If you aint getting much protection from the holding MF or the Wide Forward ahead of you in a 4-3-3, there is jack all the full back can do because he gets double teamed everytime and that is why Traore and Coquelin were exposed yesterday. Most people were blaming Traore for the 2nd goal when we still had a 4 v 2 situation at the back. If Traore overlaps and Denilson who is supposed to cover that position refuses to tackle Sidibe what is the boy supposed to do? or is he supposed to stand as a wall at the back and not go forward?

Answer this question, why did we concede 2 goals after JET and Coquelin were removed? people are quick to point out that Diaby and Ramsey coming in against WestHam changed the game but unable to see the effect that removing Coquelin and JET did to our overall game yesterday. Of course, its easy to put the blame on the lads, afterall they are the ones debuting yesterday.

3 players were culpable for our goals yesterday if you go and watch the highlights again which I did yesterday

1. Fabianski for not using his peripheral vision to see Fuller making the run for the first goal and getting beaten to it (to a lesser extent Eastmond for not doing more to block Fuller's run, the pundits were so biased towards their country man they kept on saying it was Coquelin's fault when I could clearly see Eastmond's name on the jersey)

2. Denilson for not putting in a tackle on Sidibe and not troubling him enough and allowing him to put in a cross of such quality (to a lesser extent Campbell and Silvestre for missing the headers before it got to Fuller)

3. Denilson again for the 2nd goal pointing at Etherington who was free on the right rather than closing him down while Eastmond and Campbell were tussling with Sidibe and the other guy.(Traore to a lesser extent for deciding to play the offside trap rather than sticking close to Whitehead, dont blame him much though as he could have ended up conceding an own goal anyway if he went closer to the goal line)

We were toothless going forward because our right wing was effectively dead with Theo Walcott having yet another shocker resulting in us being unable to stretch play (asides from the pitch being so narrow compared to ours), Traore and Vela also had a so so game on the left but at the least Traore did put in some quality crosses from the left.

I can tell you this that any right back who played yesterday would have looked poor with Walcott playing ahead of him, no protection for the poor lad and messing up all the balls the lad was putting forward, even when Coquelin realised Theo couldn't handle balls played to feet and tried giving him balls into space, he chose not to chase. Theo was passenger 57 yesterday and I think its about time Arsene started taking some tough decisions about him.
