OMG! This is so sad, According to reports released today by the United Nations human rights office, South Sudan has encouraged fighters to rape women in place of wages while children have been burnt alive. The report also describe South Sudan as one the World's most 'horrendous' human rights situation. The UN findings coincided with an Amnesty International report saying government forces deliberately suffocated to death more than 60 men and boys by stuffing them into a baking hot shipping container. After gaining independence from Sudan in 2011, South Sudan erupted into civil war in December 2013, setting off a cycle of retaliatory killings that have split the poverty-stricken, landlocked country along ethnic lines. The UN said it had evidence that fighters from pro-government militia which fight alongside the Sudan People’s Liberation Army are compensated under an agreement of ‘do what you can and take what you can.' “Most of the youth therefore also raided cattle, stole personal property, raped and abducted women and girls as a form of payment,” the report said. It also found that civilians suspected of supporting the opposition, including children, had being burnt alive and hanged from trees and cut to pieces. “This is one of the most horrendous human rights situations in the world,” UN rights chief Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein said in a statement. Both the government and rebel sides have been accused of perpetrating ethnic massacres, recruiting and killing children and carrying out widespread rape, torture and forced displacement of populations to purge their opponents from areas. The grostesque human right abuses could amount to war crimes, the report said. - See more at: http://www.duketundesblog.com/2016/03/soldiers-in-south-sudan-rape-women-as-salaries-un.html#sthash.jPVZMwWx.dpuf |
Dr. Ben Carson, the retired neurosurgeon who withdrew from the Presidential race last week, has thrown his support behind billionaire Republican candidate Donald Trump today. Speaking at a news conference at Trump's private club, Mar-a-Lago, Dr. Ben Carson said, He and Trump had 'buried the hatchet' and praising the Republican Party's front-runner as a "the voice of the people to be heard.' "I want the political process to play out in the way that it should play out." Ben Carson said. "What I've been seeing recently is political operatives ... once again trying to assert themselves and trying to thwart the will of the people," Carson said. "I find that to be an extraordinarily dangerous place right now." Carson's endorsement, coming just one week after he ended his own White House campaign, gives Trump a significant boost as the Republican nominating contest heads to critical states like Florida and Ohio on Tuesday. Trump said he did not make any promises to Carson about a future role in a potential Trump administration, but pledged that Carson would play a "big, big part" in his campaign. Carson -- whose campaign and demeanor were polar opposites of Trump's in many ways -- played the role Friday of vouching for Trump's character and integrity. He explained that there were "two Donald Trumps" -- one that the public sees, and another more reserved and "cerebral" man who "sits there and considers things very carefully." "Some people have gotten the impression that Donald Trump is this person who is not malleable, who does not have the ability to listen, and to take information in and make wise decisions. And that's not true," Carson said. "He's much more cerebral than that." Carson became the second former presidential candidate to back to Trump. New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie endorsed the businessman two weeks ago. You might also like: - See more at: http://www.duketundesblog.com/2016/03/dr-ben-carson-endorses-trump-for.html#sthash.T8YVJcB1.dpuf

Meet these amazing 15 brilliant and young African scientists that will be impacting Africa and the World at large soon as they join over 1,000 people from more than 100 countries for the first global gathering of African scientists, the 'Next Einstein Forum' in Dakar, Senegal. The group of 15 talents, were selected for the impact of their work and to showcase some of the incredible research that Africa's scientists and technologists are doing. Their resumes include; research on the ability to predict biological outbreaks that are bound to happen, the use of green chemistry to solve fresh water issues, the creation of bioreactors that could save a city's water supply, the causes of disease and immunity and predicting global behaviour through IT systems. Others are Challenging Einstein's theories on quantum properties, developing better therapeutic and diagnostic tools to fight Tuberculosis and other HIV-related opportunistic infections and intelligent applications that can bridge humans and large amounts of data. See the list below: 1. Noble Banadda, Uganda, Makerere University, Bio-processing engineering Noble's area of research is bioprocessing engineering, specifically mathematic modelling of biological systems and interactions. The ability to predict what is bound to happen based on current biological observations before it happens is very important for prevention and control especially in countries that lack the resources to contain outbreaks. Noble led a team that has pioneered the first ever farmer-based low cost multiple purpose vehicle in Uganda and in 2015 he was honoured as a young scientist at the World Economic Forum in Dalian, China. In waste management research, Noble is ranked 35th globally and 2nd in Africa according to Google Scholar rankings 2. Ghada Bassioni, Egypt, Ain Shams University In terms of research, Ghada has been interested in a variety of sub topics within chemistry and chemistry related subjects. In her undergraduate, she dabbled in inorganic chemistry, then went into organometallic chemistry during her masters only to end up in physical chemistry and interfacial science phenomena in her postdoctoral studies in the field of construction materials and petroleum chemistry. Ghada plans to spearhead initiatives around chemical safety and the use of green chemistry. She hopes to use interdisciplinary approaches to solve societal challenges like fresh water supply. 3. Sherien Elagroudy, Egypt, Environmental Engineering, Ain Shams University Shrien is an Associate Professor of Environmental Engineering at Ain Shams University in Egypt and the founding director of the first Solid Waste Management Center of Excellence in the country. For her PhD studies at Ryerson University, Sherien modelled the settlement of bioreactor landfills and then built a field-scale prototype of that novel landfill in Cairo. Her new bioreactor stopped methane emissions and the leaching of wastewater into Cairo's water supply. Sherien is currently engaged in several research grants of more than $3.5 million in the fields of solid waste management, biochemical waste treatment technologies and waste to energy. 4. Mouhamed Moustapha Fall, Senegal, Mathematics, African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) In terms of research, Moustapha started in applied mathematics namely fluid mechanics and solid mechanics. Eventually he moved into pure mathematics namely geometric analysis which links partial differential equations and differential geometry. Moustapha believes mathematics can help you understand your surroundings therefore allowing problem solving of important challenges with less funding; a tool developing countries should leverage. Moustapha hopes to understand the interplay between non local geometry and relativistic quantum mechanisms (RQM). - See more at: http://www.duketundesblog.com/2016/03/meet-15-of-africas-most-brilliant-young.html#sthash.NHwGNjQ8.dpuf

BLACK SUNDAY: 'Oh Death! Be not proud' my heart is heavy and i am so sad for this deaths are avoidable but will take solace in 'Eccl 12:7 Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.' First was the news of death of the Minister of Labour and Employment and his son in an accident this afternoon and then another fatal accident involving the vehicle of Kaduna State House of Assembly committee that claimed the lives of many. These are some of the photos from the accident scene that claimed the lives of the Honorable Minister of Labour and Employment (State) James Ocholi, his son and his wife 'Mrs Blessing fatima Ocholi' who survived the initial accident but died a few hours ago in the Hospital. The accident happened along the Kaduna-Abuja expressway this afternoon. Late Ocholi, is a perfect gentleman and a brilliant man, who wowed all during the last ministerial screening. May souls all the faithful departed rest in peace. This death are avoidable, if only our government will do the needful. Our roads are death trap, failed railway and even air travel is nothing to right home about. - See more at: http://www.duketundesblog.com/2016/03/black-sunday-death-be-not-proud-rip-hon.html#sthash.bkbm38zm.dpuf

OMG this is so SAD! As reported in the LEADERSHIP SUNDAY. A pregnant woman identified as Elo, who was crushed to death alongside her one-year-old son at Alaba Suru bus-stop, along the Lagos-Badagry expressway was reported to have visited and even ate at her friends place two hours after the incident. An eyewitness, who spoke with LEADERSHIP Sunday, said a Lexus Sport Utility vehicle (SUV) reversing against traffic crushed Elo, and her son. The eyewitness also told reporters that the impact smashed Elo's head and the intestine of the baby gushed out, after a truck conveying a 40-feet container also rammed into the SUV from behind, damaging it. A family friend of the victims, Odafe, disclosed that two hours after the accident, Elo and her son appeared where her (Elo’s) friend was selling ‘amala’ along Ojo Road, Ajegunle, and after eating the food, left the scene. He said 10 minutes later, someone came to the ‘amala’ joint to announce the news of the tragedy which the amala seller did not believe until she went to the scene. Elo was said to be a fashion designer at Ojo Road but lived with her husband at Surulere. She was returning home when the accident occurred. Her elder sister was said to have delivered a baby girl yesterday but people concealed the bad news from her. The case is being investigated by men of the Nigerian police force attached to the Layeni police station. - See more at: http://www.duketundesblog.com/2016/03/weird-woman-visit-friend-2-hours-after.html#sthash.Kc3n9dnB.dpuf |

The Voyage of Terror, joins our long-list of World's most Infamous Murders today on Duketundesblog SATURDAY DIGEST. Terror overwhelmed a sailing ship 'Herbert Fuller' on the stormy night of 13 July. 1896. One of the passenger who was roused from sleep by what he claim sounded like the scream of wind through the halyards, Lester Monks stepped warily into the captain's cabin with a loaded revolver in his hand. As he became wide awake, he realized he had heard the scream of a woman. The captain's cot had been toppled to its side and the skipper, Captain Charles Nash, lay dying in a pool of blood. His wife, Laura was on her bunk and like her husband, she had literally been chopped to death, her skull smashed in front and back and her jaws were broken. Monk made it up to the companion way to find the first mate, Thomas Bram, pacing the deck. And from the moment that he heard the news, Bram's conduct was bizzare. He refused to alert the second mate, August Blomberg, as he claimed the man was inciting the crew against him. And in the end, he feigned slumping on the deck and hugged the passenger's legs, begging for protection. They woke the steward Jonathon Spencer and the three went to Blomberg's cabin. There they found the door wide open and Blomberg's hacked to death in his bunk, two of his severed fingers on the floor. Then Bram took control of the ship and surprisingly, he led them to the murder weapon on the deck - a new axe with sticky blood and flesh, still more strangely Bram gave a throaty shriek and threw the weapon overboard. At a meet with the crew, Bram urged that they throw the three bodies into the Sea - an idea vetoed by all of them. Bram then tried to blame the killings on the dead second mate 'Blomberg', insisting that the second mate must have died of his own wounds. And he wanted to take the murder ship to French Guiana in South America. No one slept easily again as the ship with a cargo of timber for the next six days en-route port. In the name of culture, ethnicity and political affiliations Nigerians are always supporting impunity na only naija u go hear say 'why dem go jail B shebi A did the same thing 20 years ago and he's still in government.' Prof. Pius hit the bulls eye in this piece. Afam4eva: |
Anytime you hear a Nigerian veer into a conversation whose nuances s/he can't even grasp with "it is our culture and it is none of your business", rush to the nearest clinic and take vaccination shots against stupidity before you move near this Nigerian again lest s/he infests you with the stupidity virus. The tragedy is that the Nigerian hardly ever mobilizes cultural alibis to defend what is good. Speak of Nigerian innovation, genius, creativity, etc, you will never hear, "it is our culture". Mention anything untoward, any uncatholic thing or practice and onward soldiers of culture and religion will march out furiously, lashing and thrashing blindly and ignorantly. There is no corner of Nigeria where you won't find such diseducated soldiers of culture and religion. Mention any social or political or economic malaise, they will rootle the archives to find that it also happens elsewhere which, in their fevered brains, justifies, explains, rationalizes and cancels out the current issue. Mention genocide and this category of foolish and irredeemable Nigerians will tell you that Hitler also did it. So, I wake up this morning to attempts to make photos of baby factories in the Southeast go viral. I don't even know where to start with the idiocy of those behind this.Obinna Aligwekwe, Agbaosi Sevezun Gloria, and Ekundayo Awe say they are attempting to shift the narrative. These my friends are wrong. That is crediting those behind this nonsense with too much intelligence. Shifting a narrative is a clever and brilliant move. Those circulating those photos are not intelligent, clever or brilliant. They are not trying to shift the narrative. They are practicing the standard Nigerian playbook of stupidity: your evil justifies and rationalizes my evil. If somebody steals in your neighbourhood and makes the news today, you immediately feel assaulted in your culture and religion and waste the next few weeks of your life trying to find thieves from every other ethnic group and the other religion. That is not shifting narratives. That is trying to justify evil with evil. I have written tons against this Nigerian national malaise. You mention a particular politician who has just stolen, the Nigerian rushes out with : why haven't you mentioned this other one? He has not denied that the person you mentioned is a thief o. He can't be bothered. And these foolish people dredging up baby factory photos from the southeast don't even have enough brain power to understand that the southeast has nothing to do with the current situation. A Kano man abducts a Bayelsa girl in a drama which subsequently reveals the weaknesses of the Nigerian state vis-a-vis traditional institutions in Kano and you are showing pictures of baby factories in the southeast. Where is the connection? Is Bayelsa southeast? Since you have a short memory and you lack critical intelligence, here are some details for you to ponder. 1) There was the same level of outrage and condemnation when those baby factory pictures first surfaced about two years ago. Everybody condemned the practice. 2) During the outrage over baby factories, I do not recall any southeastern folks rushing out to claim that baby factories are their culture and religion. All the southeasterners I have on my list condemned it and recognized it for the problem that it is. If you have any evidence of anybody from the southeast saying "this is my culture and religion" let's have it. 3) Just as the child bride phenomenon is not limited to the North (broadly defined) there is no evidence that baby factories are exclusive to one part of the country. 4) The prevalence of baby factories in one part of the country does not justify, excuse, rationalize, attenuate, mitigate, or cancel out the tragedy of Ese Oruru. And you are adding to the symbolic violence by trying to find excuses. This tragedy cannot be denied its own specificity and singularity. This is the specific case of a Bayelsa girl who has suffered violence in the hands of a Kano man and in the context of the institutions of Kano. We will not allow you to dilute this specificity. 4) The more idiotic among those of you trying to justify this thing are even asking a taunting question: which is better - marry them as pre-teenagers or turn them to baby factories? I don't blame you. You are products of a sick and depraved Nigerian society. That is why you would think that the destiny of the girl child in Nigeria is to be objectified by stupid men like you and given only two existential options - to be exploited as teen brides or teen baby manufacturers. 5) This explains why the Dino Melaye, the obstreperous slowpoke who represents my constituency in the Senate, can stand up in that chamber and appeal to his colleagues to patronize "made-in-Nigeria women". It is the same national sickness of objectification of women. It did not occur to this slowpoke that Nigerian women may want no part of made in Nigeria wife beaters with porridge brains like him. He does not grant them that agency. Just as you cannot see the girl child beyond victimhood. So, to answer your stupid question. None of the options is better. None is good. None is acceptable. The girl child should not be a bride and should not be a baby manufacturer. Anybody asking which of these two options is better does not deserve to be my compatriot in the 21st century. The Nigeria I envision has no space for prelogical citizens. See more - http://www.duketundesblog.com/2016/03/your-evil-justifies-my-evil-prof-pius.html |
A lot happened this past week in Nigeria, From Ese Oruru abduction saga to queues that resurfaced in Petrol stations across the nation and then the Scottish Bagpipe welcome for President Muhammadu Buhari and many more issues that has been trending in the social media. Firstly, I am giving a BIG thumbs up to the Nigeria social media community on the rescue of Ese Oruru..We did it, I hope and pray we will start acting when necessary so we can keep this charlatans on their toes. Now it is clear that 'you can only underestimate the power of social media at your own peril.' I don't know if any other Nigerian is on the same page with me on the recently uncovered abduction saga, that involves forceful kidnapping or should i say marriage of underage girls, who then end up in palaces. I saw a piece online where someone raised a conspiracy theory of the possibility that the missing Chibok girls may actually be located in Palaces across Nigeria, and with Ese Oruru and Patience Paul's case, the theory may not be looking too far fetched. And what is it with the queues at gas stations again this time, i guess we should blame Jonathan again. For 10 months now, we are still in the blame game of how the last regime failed to do the right thing and the price of every commodity seems to be skyrocketing. Abeg is Nigeria on a lock-down? So we have always had Bagpipes since 1900 ehn, When will a slave mentality leave Africa for God sake? Can you imagine the British army clad in Ofi and Kijipa to welcome the British Prime Minister, Haba! APC wailers, Wearing a Scottish attire and musical paraphernalia in this day and age to welcome a Nigerian President on Nigerian soil constitutes a high form of colonial mentality, and a lack of imagination for a nation with many rich cultures. We were all clamouring for #BuyNigeriaToGrowtheNaira but it seem not to be applicable to the goons in power. And yes, So finally the biggest Party in Africa (on Paper) has finally disintegrated, with the emergence of Peoples Mega Party (PMP) out of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Hmmmm i just wonder when or if we will ever get it right in this country, so if there's a little squabble in your party, the next thing is to jump boat or float a new party...All the big DEMOCRACIES we see around don't do whack stuffs like we have it here. Finally, A note to President Buhari, i take God beg you sir, end your crisscrossing and junketing so you can work here in Nigeria where we voted for you ehn, Nigerians are already asking for their corruption back, because all wetin una dey form up there na common man e dey affect... Police in Delta State, have declared one Alhaji Burkar Hassan, who is said to be on the run wanted, after it revealed that the Alhaji employed the services of five teenagers for a fetish sex overnight. The five female teenagers and a young lady, were arrested today, March 1, by the police in Delta State. Mrs Celestina Kalu, police spokesperson in the state confirmed the arrest of the teenage girls and the unidentified young lady. Kalu said they confessed they were given N10, 000 each for the night, adding that there had been suspicion over the illicit sex business and fears that it could be fetish as the teenage female sex hawkers were subjected to special spirit bath after sex bouts. “The arrest of the girls took place last week following a tip-off on their activities around Warri Motor Park during nightfall,” Kalu informed. Mother of one of the girls, who pleaded anonymity, narrated how she initiated the arrest when her daughter spent the night outside. According to her: “When I saw them, I knew that they must know about the whereabouts of my daughter who did not pass the night in my house. “It was the first time my daughter would sleep out. I decided to lodge a complaint to the police because we have been hearing stories about these girls sleeping with one Alhaji for money,” the victim’s mother noted. Further investigation revealed that the illicit sex business has fetish inclination as the teenage girls were reportedly subjected to all manners to spiritual bath after each sex bout. - See more at: http://www.duketundesblog.com/2016/03/police-arrest-5-teenagers-for-festish.html#sthash.cFK6Wqcn.dpuf |

China's longest preserved test tube baby, has been born, after a 40-year-old woman named Li gave birth to a healthy baby in China's northwest Shaanxi Province from an embryo frozen 12 years ago. Science is truly changing the world and the way we live. Li, gave birth to her second son, weighing 3,440 grammes at birth, at the Tangdu Hospital in provincial capital Xi’an on Wednesday morning. She suffers from blocked Fallopian tubes and polycystic ovary syndrome, a health problem that can affect a woman’s fertility and pregnancy. Li began trying to get pregnant through IVF in 2003. That year doctors harvested 12 of her eggs and created 12 embryos with her husband’s sperm. They implanted two fresh embryos to her womb and froze seven that they considered viable. Li gave birth to a healthy boy in 2004, and has since spent three yuan (93 naira) per day to store the embryos in the hospital in case of an emergency. Last year, when China dropped its one-child policy, she decided to have a second child. Three embryos survived the thawing process. The two best were implanted in her womb, but only one survived. “The success rate of implanted thawed embryos is more than 40 per cent in our hospital, so doctors usually place more than one embryo at a time,” Wang Xiaohong, director of Tangdu Hospital reproductive medicine centre, was quoted as saying by the state-run Xinhua News Agency. “Our first boy is 12-years-old now. The purpose of freezing the embryos was to have a second child some day, and luckily, we succeeded,” her husband said. Louise Brown, the first test-tube baby, was born in Britain in 1978, and about five million babies have been born worldwide through IVF since. The first test-tube baby on the Chinese mainland, Zheng Mengzhu, was born in 1988. The infertility rate is high in China. China Population Association statistics from 2012 showed 40 million people are facing fertility issues, accounting for around 12.5 per cent of the population at child-bearing age. “IVF is one of the most effective assisted reproduction techniques for treating of infertility,” said Wang. - See more at: http://www.duketundesblog.com/2016/02/chinese-baby-born-after-surviving-as.html#sthash.3m3g4lha.dpuf |
You read or hear some stories/news and you will be like WTF! how can this happen? Well the story of this father and son is just one of those weird stories. Fred Shekoufeh the father is 15, while his son Eric is just 5, yes you read that right and you may want to ask how can, they don't look it? Fred and his son Eric were coincidentally born on February 29, the father and son who lived in La Mesa, California. Are two a kind whose bonding goes way beyond genetics, i will say. The father Fred will be celebrating his 15th official birthday, while Eric will also be celebrating his fifth on Monday 29, February. According to Time.com the unusual occurrence is 1 in 2.1million so Fred and Eric are so unique. Eric Shekoufeh said sharing such an unusual birthday with his dad is "pretty incredible," but admits being born on February 29 has some challenges. "I get lots of jokes about whether I should celebrate on Feb. 28 or March 1," Eric said, adding that he tries to stretch it out on both days. "It's a weird day. People don't recognize it on social media, but when they find out, they never forget it." Eric further declared that his favorite birthday so far was in 2012, when he turned "four." "Everyone and their mother made a joke about me turning four, and that four-year-old's shouldn't be able to drive cars. Well, evidently I could," he said. "I was glad to have an actual birthday on such on emphatic year: getting a license. No confusion at the DMV. I hope I can say the same when I'm going out for my 21st. " This year, Shekoufeh, a student at UCLA, plans to do more of his celebrating at Big Bear over the weekend. "I don't plan to push it over to March 1st," he said. He said he is more excited about next year when he will officially turn 21 and can legally drink alcohol. "Legally, I should be able to drink on the 28th, but I'm expecting a bouncer to look at my license and tell me it's a fake," he said. - See more at: http://www.duketundesblog.com/2016/02/this-father-is-turning-15-and-his-son.html#sthash.WVJetJY2.dpuf

A Florida woman, Dalia Dippolito, 33, who was caught on hidden camera handing over her husband picture to a hitman (Undercover Policeman) inside a vehicle seven years ago, has turn around to deny ever wanting to hurt her husband, instead claiming she was only acting when she was caught on camera finalizing the plot in 2009. Dalia, testified in court during the pre-trial hearing for the first time. Police organised an undercover cop, Widy Jean, to communicate with Ms Dippolito and act as the hit man. Mr Jean told her he would break into her house and give her husband ‘two in the head’ before explaining that the hit was now finalised. “Between now and when it's done, you're not gonna have the opportunity to change your mind,” he can be heard saying in the tape. “Even if you change your mind.” “I'm determined already,” Ms Dippolito said. “I'm positive, like 5000 per cent sure.” Despite the footage, Dippolito has denied ever wanting her husband killed, saying the entire tape was set up. “I’m being accused of doing something I didn’t do,” she told the court. “It’s part of the script.” The pair had only been married for six months. She claims the entire scene was a set up orchestrated by police officers from Boynton Beach, designed to gain ‘publicity and glory’ and attract a production team from Cops to film an episode. - See more at: http://www.duketundesblog.com/2016/02/florida-woman-who-hired-hit-man-to-kill.html#sthash.VvyZcIcY.dpuf

PHOTO SPEAK: Inside the slum along the dusty wasteland of Johannesburg refereed to as 'White squatter camps' in South Africa, where families live in shanties where there is little food, pools of filthy, stagnant water where mosquitoes breed and no electricity. These are appalling conditions endured by white families living in the camp, While most white South Africans still land the plumb jobs and enjoy relative wealth, the number of poor whites has steadily increased in the past two decades. Seeking to undo years of racial inequality - when whites were almost guaranteed employment and housing under apartheid - the ruling African National Congress (ANC) government introduced laws that promoted employment for blacks and aimed to give them a greater share of the economy. This change, along with the global financial meltdown, has meant many white South Africans have fallen on hard times and are forced to live in slums. Following the end of apartheid in 1994, many unskilled white South Africans have enjoyed little sympathy from those who believe they profited from the brutal regime. Have you been struggling to shed some weight with little or no result. I have a good news for you, according to reports of the new findings by University of Florida scientists - Eating a handful of almonds a day replaces those empty calories, while decreasing a person's salt intake and increasing their protein. The findings suggest that incorporating almonds into a person’s diet could improve overall health. The team of researchers set out to study the effect that the addition of almonds can have on a person’s diet. They analyzed data collected from 28 parent-child pairs in North Central Florida. For three weeks, the parent participants ate 1.5 ounces of whole almonds each day. Similarly, the children ate half an ounce of whole almonds – or the equivalent amount of almond butter – each day. At the beginning of the study, the scientists measured the participating parents and children’s Healthy Eating Index, which is a measurement of diet quality. The Healthy Eating Index assesses a person’s adherence to the USDA’s Dietary Guidelines for Americans. A score under 51 indicates a poor diet, while a score between 51 and 80 shows a need for improvement, and a score over 80 reflects a healthy diet. The parents’ average score at the beginning of the 14-week period was 53.7 (plus or minus 1. , while the children’s were 53.7 (plus or minus 2.6).However, after the almond intervention the Healthy Eating Index score for both parents and children increased. The parents’ average rose to 61.4 (plus or minus 1.4), while the children’s average increased to 61.4 (plus or minus 2.2). All participants also increased their component scores for protein foods. Furthermore, they decreased their intake of empty calories. The scientists believe that the participants were replacing salty and processed snacks with almonds. - See more at: http://www.duketundesblog.com/2016/02/want-to-lose-weight-eat-handful-of.html#sthash.Epw7RXIC.dpuf
