Neck breaking speed but wait till it gets congested. I can confirm ntel is congested with the rate they sell devices and the way people unlock modems these days to use ntel. Ntel will get better with competition but they are slow with expansion, quite a number of old mtel/nitel base stations are wasting away.

For me sha, I've succeeded in reducing my workplace monthly internet from 25k per month for 125gb to 10k per month for unlimited Internet
Well said.

I still get a consistent 20-23 Mbps on 2/3 bars on ntel (from its former glorious high of 40-50 Mbps.) Plus, it now streams way better. My problem is that it drops out in my crib for about one hour, about twice a day, at unpredictable times. Sometimes, a drop out coincides with power failure. At other times, I just need to restart the modem or invoke the Airplane mode.

Overall, I simply fill in the drop out periods with Glo's LTE data (about the same speed in my area.) That way, I can now cover a whole month of 24/7 LTE service, as needed, with not more that 12.5k. So, I really wish ntel continues this way - at the minimum.

It also depends on which side you woke up in the morning, or how many colanuts/gworo/orogbo you've had in a day, lol. grin

Seriously, it probably depends on when, what day of the week, and where you are with respect to any of our networks. (Besides, Fast concentrates strictly on streaming, no fluff, if one reads their philosophy. Speedtest by Ookla is usually less conservative.)

The attached are also with Glo's 4G, same day. And my transit time is not even the best...

Short answer: No, a Telco does not have to lay cables before delivering 4G/LTE services. Telcos can — and do — use existing 2/3G signal or WiMax masts that have been equipped or upgraded to deliver 4G services.

More answer: The cables being laid by Glo are made up of Fibre Optic lines/wires. Fibre Optic "wires" are very modern, ultra high efficiency but relatively and individually thin strands/wires that can each transmit hundreds or even thousands of times the signals which the old, traditional telephone cables were capable of doing.

http://www.businessbee.com/resources/wp-content/uploads/24534/feature73.jpg
A simple illustration showing traditional [TV] Cable (left) vs Fibre Optic cable

Morals of the story: Glo is already positioning itself to deliver ultra high speed services in a cost effective and efficient way to most areas of the country, and in a short while, if you asked me.

Those are my own layman's understanding of fibre optic engineering for data services. A professional at it would give a better narrative of all I've written here, and would probably be much more accurate. So, YMMV.

Good luck.

Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun

Nigerian government agencies indicted by a federal audit, for failure to remit over N450 billion revenue into government coffers between 2010 and 2015, are to be reported to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission for prosecution.

The Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun, who said this on Thursday, said demand notices have already been issued to affected agencies for the payment of outstanding operating surpluses, which was a violation of the provisions of the Fiscal Responsibility Act 2007.

The agencies, the minister said, have also been invited to a meeting scheduled to December 6, to enable them submit a repayment plan or face appropriate sanctions, including deduction of amount owed directly from TSA balances, besides prosecution by the EFCC.

Sections 21 and 22 of the Act, states that “(1) The Government corporations and agencies and government owned companies listed in the Schedule to this Act (in this Act referred of as “the Corporations” shall, not later than six months from the commencement of this Act and every three financial years thereafter, and not later than the end of the second quarter of every year, cause to be prepared and submitted to the Minister their Schedule estimates of revenue and expenditure for the next three financial years.
“(2) Each of the bodies referred to in sub-section (1) of this section shall submit to the Minister not later than the end of August in each financial year: (a.) An annual budget derived from the estimates submitted in pursuance of subsection (1) of this section; and (b.) Projected operating surplus which shall be prepared in line with acceptable accounting practices.
“(3) The Minister shall cause the estimates submitted in pursuance of subsection (2) of this section to be attached as part of the Appropriation Bill to be submitted to the National Assembly.”

Section 22 (1) states, “Notwithstanding the provisions of any written law governing the corporation, each corporation shall establish a general reserve fund and shall allocate thereto at the end of each financial year, one-fifth of its operating surplus for the year.
(2) The balance of the operating surplus shall be paid into the Consolidate Revenue Fund of the Federal Government not later than one month following the statutory deadline for publishing each corporation’s accounts.”

Mrs. Adeosun named some of the defaulting agencies to include ‎Nigeria Communication Commission, Nigerian Ports Authority, Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority, Bureau of Public Enterprises, Nigeria Shippers Council, National Pensions Commission, Nigeria Bulk Electricity Trading‎ and National Health Insurance Scheme.

Others include Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, Industrial Training Fund, National Health Insurance Scheme, Nigeria Postal Service, Nigerian Television Authority, Nigeria Export Promotion Council, National Information Technology and Development Agency, Raw Material Research & Development Council, Nigeria Export Processing Zones Authority, Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria, and Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria.

‎The minister said a recovery committee chaired by the Accountant General of Federation, Ahmed Idris, has since been constituted to recover the outstanding N450 billion operating surpluses, including holding bilateral discussions with the affected agencies.

“We have been getting positive responses. Some Agencies have started making remittances to the Consolidated Revenue Fund,” Mrs. Adeosun said.

“For instance, about N640 million was received from Nigeria Shippers Council on Wednesday. Our duty is strictly auditing and investigating. We are not a prosecuting agencies. That is why we will be reporting some of these defaulting agencies to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission for prosecution‎,” she said.

They only suspended it. In the next few days, they'll come up with a price template. So don't, for a second, think this is total withdrawal.
Hmm... (at the bolded.) The minister of communications was yesterday reported to have said he was not aware about nor consulted on the "90k minimum" template before it was issued by the NCC as a directive. To me, that's another layer for the NCC to cross. And IIRC, the minister and the NCC were not exactly on the same page during the recent process of the imposition of regulatory fine on MTN and the attendant imbroglio.

The current board of the NCC tends to want to act independent of the minister, which tactic I feel is a mirage.

Like some one said elsewhere, it's taken the major data providers — and indeed consumers — years of perseverance and investments in the system, for them to get to and operate at the level they're now at. You can't just tie their hands behind their backs, just to allow some dark horses, whose futures you can't predict, to "catch up."

What could have been even more painful, was that the huge additional revenue which those currently charging below the now shelved 90k/MB minimum would have made, would have been pocketed (less tax) by the major ISP's concerned o. No kobo of it (less tax) would have been gained by the government!

Martins301:
This Telecommunication Companies are quiet dubious. I am sure that NCC didn't give them any directive to hike prices. They are a cartel that took the decision unilaterally and were just trying to rope NCC in after bribing one or two persons there. Awon Ole
The NCC actually gave the providers the new ground rules that would have resulted in big increases in data rates across board. For instance, whereas Glo and MTN currently have a floor of 21k and 84k per MB respectively, the NCC issued the directive that each of the big four at least, that is, MTN, Glo, Airtel, and Etisalat must from tomorrow charge a minimum of 90k per MB!

Glo, for instance, would have been forced to increase its data charges nearly four-fold overnight!...

At first, I didn't believe the NCC would actually ever decree foolish things such as price-fixing, until I read it's press release of today which contains the details of what it had mandated. Please read it if you haven't already.

If the quality of the members of the board of the NCC is a direct measure of those of other boards in this country, then we are in serious trouble and under the yoke of pedestrian and bad leadership. Hmm.

I heard from a very reliable source.

They complained that the new 4G LTE rolled out by the GSM operators data prices are too cheap and may put them out of business.

I will do away with my Smile modem once my current subcription is depleted.

I was enjoy the 4G on Airtel not until my phone screen broke completely and made me resume using Smile.

Internet should be cheap and made almost free. Just for leaving my PC on for a day, it consumes about 2GB. So why should they try to choke us with it?
Thanks for posting.

That those two start-ups cried to the NCC was not a surprise. What's very surprising — indeed unfortunate — is that the NCC was so gullible as to attempt to put so much new, additional, and unwarranted revenue, yanked from ordinary Nigerians, into the hands of the leading data providers, supposedly in order to protect the start-ups! Meanwhile, the NCC cannot, in all conscience, vouch for the business acumen, ethics or practices of the supposed start-ups, neither are the big players and consumers complaining.

Another thing: Even within the big players, GLO's data rates are roughly one-third of MTN's, for example. So, why would the NCC want to tie GLO's hands and allow MTN to run away with more of the market share it (MTN) doesn't already control? For God's sake, an ISP should be allowed to compete as ethically as possible with the strategies and resources it has, as long as lawful taxes are paid as and when due.

Members of the current board of the NCC need to receive some common sense, especially when combined with economic sense, please.

Phones › Re: GSM Companies To Increase Data Rate by duwdu:
Lots of guys are really misinformed in this our Obodo Naija... How on earth do people expect a government to decently function without people having to pay tax on goods and services?

For what it's worth, most previous governments in our country were dubious when it came to the issue of taxes on goods and services - pretending as though there were none, or ignoring to collect them, so as not to disrupt/disturb the apple cart. That facilitates their winnng elections, when, in fact, the government anywhere can't function without taxes! As a result, you and me have been deceived — and spoilt — over the years, guys. To me, the important things is to hold the government accountable for all revenues it generates, so as to fan development.

And, to the OP: I have a feeling this will turn out to be the case of someone confusing a directive by the NCC for networks to collect lawful taxes due on data, with the expected increase in data rates as a result! I hope I'm not wrong, because then it will be sad indeed if the NCC should now start meddling in how much the networks prescribe as own base charge for own data service (before lawful taxes are applied.) In other words, God forbid a revert to the era of price control!

Competition, they say, IS good — for both business and consumer.

Good luck, everyone.

This offer works on Mtn Beta Talk.
Recharge with #200. You get #500 in your bonus account. Bonus is valid for 7 days. Next, dial *142# to activate your Mtn Xtra Value Mini. Your #200 main balance gives you #700 in your Xtra Value Mini account. Add that to your Beta Talk bonus account, you have #1200 worth of airtime. Calls are charged at 40k per second, which gives #24 per minute. If you divide #1200 by #24, you get 50 minutes. (You also get 20mb extra - *jara*). To see the economy of this simple procedure, compare making calls at 11k per second with a #5 daily charge. Deduct #5 from #200 for 7 days. Divide the balance by #6.6 (cost per minute of call on the tariff).
I challenge you to show me a more economical way to use #200 worth of airtime on ANY NETWORK in Nigeria.
Comments welcome.
