Spokesperson of Federal Ministry of Education, Ben Goong, reacting to the University of Lagos (Unilag) crisis, has said that the Council has the power to “hire and fire” anybody.

This is just as Goong explained that the ministry is yet to get a proper briefing on the earlier Removal Of The Vice-Chancellor Of University Of Lagos, Professor Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, by the Governing Council, led by ProChancellor Babawale Babalakin.

Goong emphasised that “due process” must, however, be followed before removing anybody.

“While the Ministry awaits for the proper briefing from the university authorities, it is important to reaffirm that council has the power to hire and fire but that due process must be followed in doing so,” Goong said.

Recall that the announcement of the removal of Professor Ogundipe filled the airwaves at the Unilag’s Governing Council’s meeting in Abuja on Wednesday.

The controversial removal has expectedly generated reactions from stakeholders.

Professor Ogundipe, in a statement, advised the media to quash the news, saying it was “untrue”.

Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, Dr Dele Ashiru, said the governing council lacked the power to remove the Vice-Chancellor, saying the council does not have “Constitutional Powers” to make such move.

“We are following the development. We are aware that the Council relocated to Abuja to meet. The Council does not have the constitutional powers to sack the Vice-Chancellor. We will react appropriately when things become clear,” he said.

A representative of the university’s Senate, Professor Bola Oboh, also queried the removal process, stating that Babawale Babalakin has “stepped and ridiculed the University of Lagos’ regulation.”

Edo Times can authoritatively report that there was a mild drama today at the venue the Ize-Iyamu Campaign team met with the Onojies of Esan Land to solicit for their cooperation and support in the September, 19th 2020 gubernatorial election. Neither Ize-Iyamu nor Oshiomhole was allowed to speak more than the time that was allotted them. The tension was palpable in the air. You would recall that Immediately after the hard fought 2016 election, Comrade Oshiomhole suspended the Onojie of Uromi for the political stand he took during that election. A suspension that was eventually lifted by Governor Obaseki.

Edo Times learnt that Oshiomhole was the first to stood up to talk but he was greeted with most Onojies speaking in hush tones. Oshiomhole sensing danger ahead, started to become defensive but some of the Onojies wasn’t taking it lightly with him and went into verbal spat with him that almost degenerated into fisticuffs. Ize-Iyamu campaign team quickly moved to get the press out of the hall but it was too late for them as most press already videoed the verbal exchange.

The team left the venue with heads bowed. Oshiomhole continues to be Ize-Iyamu’s biggest albatross as he looses more people daily.

So this is the kind of beer-palour gist you'd like to be pushed and featured on the front page? Who are the promoters of "Edo Times?" And where's at least one version of the video recording you've talked about? Hopefully that will help one believe the story a bit?

Irrua is the administrative headquarters of Edo Central (Esan) and the king of esan is the Okajesan of Esanland, that's the head of of esan kings.

And in Politics, AC/ACN/APC has always won in Igueben and sometimes Irrua.

I'm not a local and do not belong to any political party, but history tells me since the APC came into national prominence, it's been winning most elections at the state level, while the PDP has won most elections at the national level, in Edo State.

That's the reasonable conclusion to draw from the fact that Mr. Oshiomhole won in every one of the 18 LGA's in Edo State — including Esan land — in 2012 as he was re-elected the Governor of the state on his usual platform of their party, the APC.

In addition, all the current elected and serving members of the State House of Assembly — including of course those representing Esan land — were elected on the platform of the APC. So, where's your boast coming from? And for good measure, the coming election is at the state level where the APC has been the decisive winner in recent memory. So, again, where's your boast/assertion coming from?

I'm not claiming to be a soothsayer on the coming election for the governorship seat in Edo State, but analyses like I've stated above clearly do not support your worldview.

But hey, what do I know, right?

The Ojirua of Irrua in Edo State, HRH Williams Okuagban, Momodu II, has condemned Governor Godwin Obaseki over last week’s invasion and vandalism of the state’s House of Assembly complex.

He described the incident, which saw unknown persons embark on the removal of the roof of the House of Assembly and other acts of vandalism, as sad and a waste of government resources, considering that state’s funds would be spent on repairs and rebuilding efforts.

The monarch stated these Tuesday in his palace, while receiving Edo governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the September 19 election, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu.

He gave an open endorsement of Ize-Iyamu by addressing him as the next governor of Edo state.

The traditional ruler said: “I welcome you, my governor. Your visit here is just to further familiarise yourself with our people, as you have already been chosen.

“Not too long ago, I watched on television as the President (Muhammadu Buhari) handed over the party’s (APC’s) flag to you. I was not there, but what I did in my room was to clap my hands.

“This is our son; he is going to be the next governor. I am the owner of Esan land. I will be celebrating 50 years on the throne next year June. I am sure this governor, Pastor Ize-Iyamu, is going to be my chairman.”

The king also hailed the governorship candidate of APC for the presentation of his documented manifesto, the SIMPLE agenda, stating that anyone desirous of leadership must present a manifesto and roadmap to inspire trust and give room for assessment.

Ize-Iyamu, in his remarks, expressed gratitude to the monarch and the people of Irrua for their acceptance, promising to run an administration respectful of the traditional institution and partner with all traditional rulers in Edo to address the security challenges of the state.

The campaigns of the governorship candidate of APC have elicited excitement in Edo Central Senatorial District, since the first stop in Igueben Local Government Area on Monday.

Obaseki made a great mistake, not even mistake he committed a crime by not inaugurating/ administering oath of office to over half of the legislature.

Let us throw away sentiments and reason like responsible people, he set a precedence if not checked other Governors will join him in such stupidity.

How many governors do get the backing of their legislature from the beginning? Very few, but they inaugurate all, lobby thereafter and win majority to their side, that’s what Obaseki failed to do, he is a baby politician with crude advisers.

For me Obaseki is the main disgrace.

A high court sitting in Gusau, Zamfara State capital, on Friday dissolved the executive council members of wards, local government and state levels of the All Progressive Congress in the state.

Alhaji Surajo Garba and 138 others, who are political allies of Senator Kabir Garba Marafa had earlier sued the state party executive council members challenging the 2018 party Congress. They said that there were irregularities and that they were disenfranchised.

Delivering the judgement that took about four hours, Justice Bello Tukur Gummi, said the complaints by Alhaji Surajo Garba and 138 that they were disenfranchised during the 2018 party Congress was genuine.

The court then dissolved all executive council members of the party at all levels, asking them to stop parading themselves as party leaders.

The court then ordered for fresh congress in which due process should be followed and level playing ground be given to all members.

Counsel to Alhaji Surajo Garba, Barrister Misbahu Salaudeen told Daily Trust that the court had learnt that members of the party were disenfranchised which led to the dissolution of the party executives at levels.

However, the counsel to the state party executives, Barrister Kelechi Odeoyegbo, said they would study the judgement and may appeal.
