What kind of uncertainties are you talking about? Grown ass men and women face problems in marriage too, so what uncertainty are you talking about here?...Maturity has nothing to do with age! My friend's younger sister in the UK graduated from the Uni at 20 and got married the same year...She's happily married to a 32 years old man that dated her for at least 2 years before they got married...So what's all these hypocrisies with our Nigerians, even the ones in diaspora? Smh!

Happiness in marriage like psychological maturity is not determined age!
Well a 20 year old lady in the UK has recourse to work and public funds as well as social services and can support a family in case of the loss of her spouse.
Besides she is past teenage age.

What does and 18 year old Nigerian widow have?

Your mind is focused on Aisha but i am talking about teenage marriage in general.

I'm not interested in the workings of a marriage , all I know is , a person who is 18 and above is legally capable of being in a conjugal union, except the he/she is mentally ill or coerced of course.
You started the comparisons.

14 year olds also do gymnastics which may put them in grave danger.

Such responsibilities are borne by the sole person who makes the decision.

The responsibility of marriage involves helpless children who also depend on the parents.
What kind of parent will an 18 year old widow of two children, or with a debilitated spouse make?

Well 18 year olds cannot buy liquor in virtually all states in the US.

What happens to a pregnant 18 year old secondary school leaver who loses her spouse vs a 25 year old graduate.

It is not just about physical maturity, but emotional, social and financial responsibilities that come with marriage.

I am happy he has finally decided to retire to Daura.

This time around he should tell his violent followers not to kill and maim innocent citizens when he loses again.

He should tell them to soak dog and baboon with love and not blood, because he will lose again, that is what he knows how to do best.

I am not being mischievous.

In some countries it is legal to marry at the age of 15, so that is not really the point.

The point is- is an 18 year old able to cope with the uncertainties of marriage in our society?

AgentOfAllah:
Eaglechild, I like to engage you because you remained civil in a rather unfortunate thread that brought out the worst in many people. I start this new thread, hoping we will be civil about our obviously different takes on the very important topic of "teenage marriage". I hope in the end, one of us will be able to convince the other of their position...Of course, I think that one is me, but I'm open to being wrong.

Forgive me for removing parts of your comment I consider irrelevant to this discourse. Your point may be approximated by the following quote:

As for your first question, there is nothing that mandates Muslims to marry before/after a certain age. Judging from historical antecedents though, one can safely assume that there is nothing wrong, Islamically, to marry a child as young as 9. Nevertheless, religion is largely outdated in this regard, so I hope we may avoid religious or emotional colouration in our arguments, whatever becomes of this thread.

Belief notwithstanding, the age of marriage is of importance to the public because it touches upon a lot of important indices of civility, not least, the health of the female child. I think it is safe to say that women are the pillars and pivot of any thriving civilisation.

You asked if teenage marriage should be encouraged. I want you to clarify something first. Are you using "teenage" here as a synonym for "child", or in its literal sense of the age range 13-19? If your answer is the latter, might you clarify if one can be both a teenager and an adult? If your answer is in the affirmative, then I wish to ask you a question.

Should adult marriage be encouraged?
When i say teenager i mean 13-19 years.

I realize that there is a subtle overlap between the definition of teenager and an adult if an adult is taken as one 18 years and above.
However, you must understand that while the definition of a teenager is clear cut and internationally accepted with WHO/UNICEF definitions.

The definition of adulthood based on age remains controversial and varies from society to society and even for different purposes.

I will consider an adult as someone who is physically and emotionally mature as well as socially, economically independent to a reasonable extent.
At 18 one is just not equipped to deal with the possible outcomes of marriage.
What happens to a pregnant post secondary school girl who loses her spouse vs a 25 year old graduate in the same condition.

Look at the societies that have embraced child and teenage marriage and the adverse economic and social implications.

eg the almajiri in northern Nigeria, Chad and Niger.

Sorry for responding late.

Good i am glad about your views.

Check out the mean age at first marriage for females in the G7 and Scandinavia.

US 27

Japan 29.3

Germany 30.5

France 30

UK 30

Italy 30.6

Canada 29.1

Denmark 32.2

Sweden 33.1

Norway 31.3

Finland 30.9

While teenage marriage may not seem wrong to some.

It is a global cause of poverty and it is one of the strongest causes of almajiri system.

A girl child should have the requisite skill to reasonably cater for the family in the event of any unfortunate incident.

And at 18 that is not achievable.

My inner thoughts

Buhari is not the change we need.

He is surrounded by certified criminals and if he was really serious about corruption, he will never associate with them.

He is soaked in the grit of hypocrisy.

GEJ may not be the "messiah" but he is a true democrat and a realist.

Dear Buhari,

Great write up. If only you ca wait for another 4yrs. I share your enthusiasm for our great country but it still wouldn't be fair to deny this man called GEJ. He is doing something and it is only morally right to let him complete the next four years to consolidate on whatever he has started. Even your party allies believe you deserve your 8yrs so what is it that GEJ can't have his.

If you are still available in the next four years, I promise to vote for you but now, though am a yoruba man from Lagos, I will still give Jonathan the benefit of doubt and allow him to complete his programs. Then, I can listen to ay other party who can beat his record.

Will I appreciate your courage, I strongly urge you to speak to your people to shun violence since you do communicate better with them, if you truly love this country. Again, you still welcome for my vote come 2019 should you still desire to contest.

Wishing you goodluck at the polls,
That is all Buhari needs to say.

Because he knows that deep within himself he can never be president of Nigeria again.

Please i need to know, is it mandatory for Muslims to be married before a certain age eg 18 years?

If so, then it is a believe system and maybe the OP should approach it differently.

If not then the issue here is worth a civil discuss.

The OP was somewhat arrogant about it but she did make some valid points.

There is a direct link between age at first marriage for females and the economy. Cultural practices and religion of course play a strong role.

This is not just about Aisha Buhari.

The question here is, should teenage marriage be encouraged?

PoliticsRe: Aisha Buhari, the Teenager That Married A 48 Year Old by eaglechild: 7:14am On Mar 26, 2015
Those bringing up Bianca's case are totally missing the OP's point.

It is not just about the age difference but the age of the bride and maturity.

Aisha was a teenager who was mentally immature to take on marriage.

She was barely out of secondary school and one cannot say it was teenage euphoria as the groom is a post 40 individual not even a classmate.

Bianca on the other hand was a university undergraduate in law, in her twenties and fully aware of her choices based on her age and educational status. The age gap may not be commendable in both cases.

But at least one person knew what she wanted for herself, but the other was simply a teenage bride with no say and no choice betrothed to an man he knows nothing about.
That is the feeder sequence of the almajiri system.
