CultureRe: Igbo Language And Its Downward Trend by eaglechild:
plaetton:
It is truly pathetic my brethren. We have parents in Enugu who are proud to boast that their children don't speak Igbo. So disgusting.

I go to my village, and everyone is speaking to me in english while I am speaking to them in Igbo. Its so frustrating.

I remember back in secondary school, they used to punish us for speaking Igbo, calling it vanacular, and giving it a negative connotation.

The catholic church, in my mind, is the child culprit. They have been waging a relentless war against Igbo culture for over 100 yrs.

We have been so seduced by the allures and promises of modernism, that we have locked the courage and stamina to push back and roll back the aggressive and steady erosions of our culture and self-identity.

This is where the dearth of visionary leadership is so evident.

For Anyone interested, I plan to float a society for the preservation of Igbo culture.
The plan would first lobby and pressure all stake governments in East to recognise the problem, then formulate a long Team activated plan that would include emphasis on the Igbo language in our primary and secondary education, scholarships and specify burseries and other incentives for students majoring in Igbo language at higher institutions, as well encouraging and funding of Igbo language authors, special salary scale for Igbo language teachers, and last but not the last is special and permanent media awareness campaign that injects pride into Igbo culture and history.

We can start now.
A journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step.
I totally disagree with you on this.

I mean it has changed.

If anything at all it is the exact opposite.

The Catholic church is one of the few that still compulsorily holds mass in native languages in the cities?

Catechism is still taught in Igbo.

Have you heard of the Odenigbo lecture series which is aimed at promoting the use of Igbo language.

It is backed by the Catholic church with Prof Pita Ejiofo at the forefront.

I know that Owerri, Onitsha and Awka Dioceses vehemently support this.

I have been to the two cities and i find Ilorin to be saner, cleaner and more livable.

Every city has good and bad sections.

The bad in Ibadan by far outweighs the good

Ibadan may have a relatively large population but so does Bangladesh.

It does not make it liveable.

Ibadan lacks appeal to the outsider. It is poorly planned and falls short in basic amenities and sanitation when compared to its size and population.
I do not find rusted roofs appealing.

Ilorin for example is a more liveable.

True Ibadan is cheap but it comes with it's downside.

Recall flagging down a cab with a colleague of mine, when we came for a conference in Ibadan.

We needed to get to an ATM but all we got was blank stares from the driver.

He could not understand a single word of English, even broken down to the simplest phrases, and this was in the heart of the city.

We were almost stranded.

I have to say that I am shocked to see people proclaiming Ibadan as the best city in Nigeria to live in. Have those people ever visited Calabar?

First place is Calabar followed by Uyo and Enugu.

All of the places I've listed are clean, orderly, safe, great roads (Uyo and Calabar in particular), great local eaters, with respectful and charming locals.

Abuja would be on that list were it not for the security issue.
I believe most of them have not really left Ibadan or are just doing so based on sentiment.

It was projected as one but it definitely falls below par maybe a 2 star at best.

Ilorin is way better than Ibadan.

Please remove enugu from that list. enugu is a poor old reddish town with poor people. The list should go thus; Abuja, Ibadan, Calabar and maybe Uyo
Which Ibadan?

Is it there another Ibadan in Nigeria apart from the one i know?

Any time i visit Ibadan i wonder how people cope, i really pity the residents.

I cannot forget the rat experience i had in a supposedly 5 star hotel.
Would not want to go back there.

Then you should close the thread because it is already politicized ab initio.

I served in Benue state and I frequently use that road!
I even passed last week sef.......
They are working seriously on it!
God Bless Willie of Anambra State...he's really working!

Mind you; amma Deltan...
You are partially right the Onitsha end of the road is in a better state and is undergoing active repairs.

However the Enugu state portion, and also after Awka, is in a very terrible state and needs urgent attention.

That road is also very busy and should not have been neglected or given to unreliable contractors to handle.

It should be a national emergency.
PoliticsRe: South-west Imams Reject Invitation To Meet Jonathan by eaglechild: 12:59pm On Mar 01, 2015
If this story is true, then i must say that the decision by the Imams is a very divisive one.

The catholic bishops met with Buhari irrespective of his religious affiliation, they prayed for him and they interacted.

The Imams have a duty to pray for the leaders in power.

If they have misgivings about the government then this should be the best avenue to express it.

Will they also refuse to meet Buhari.

This makes one question what Islam really stands for unity and peace or divison and malice?

IMMBECILE! Can you not see the date on that newspaper I posted?
The picture you posted there is OLD, because I can AUTHORITATIVELY tell you that ALL those construction vehicles have COMPLETELY disappeared from the venue as construction has come to a grinding HALT!!!
Could you dull propagandists stop insulting our senses with your lies and stupiidity for once?
Rochas Okorocha started work on that road just for mere political points in November 2014 because he thought the elections would hold on February 2015 as planned. He NEVER planned to finish that road, but only graded it with the hopes of getting votes from those people before the rainy season. But since the elections got postponed, his ineptitude has been completely exposed by the rain season. No single road is motorable when it rains here! Roads without drainage litter the place, waiting to wreak havoc on innocent pedestrians and drivers at the slightest sign of rain.
Where is Rochas to be found today? He is still in London, running around with BUHARI!
What an immbecile!
I understand how you feel.

Many roads in Owerri become totally impassable during the rainy season due to very poor quality construction work and lack of drainage.

Worldbank axis from ideal suites round about to Imo housing round about has already turned into a nightmare.

Do you know the road that links government house to works road(madonna school), that road failed in seven days a world record.

The inland roads are of slightly better quality but the one continuous with ware house roundabout is already failing with several substandard patches.

Rochas really needs to stop cutting corners when it comes to road construction.
