The Ondo state police command has arrested four men for reportedly stealing phones during last week’s second-term inauguration of Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu.

IgbereTV reports that the victims were arrested by men of the Operation Scorpion Squad on the Ilesha-Akure Road while returning to their bases in Oyo, Osun and Kwara states.

The suspects who committed the offence at the event held at the Dome have been identified as Ojo Femi, 30, Abiodun Adewale, 45, Kayode Olarewaju, 45 years and Aiwole, 25.

Police spokesman, Tee-Leo Ikoro said seven phones stolen at the inauguration ceremony were recovered from the suspects who would soon be charged to court.

Governor Ortom And Bala Mohammed Reconcile After Media Fight Over AK47 For Herders (Photos)

The media fight between Benue state governor, Samuel Ortom and his Bauchi state counterpart, Bala Mohammed, over the bearing of AK47 rifles by herders appears to have become a thing of the past as their Rivers state counterpart, Nyesom Wike, reconciled them after a meeting initiated by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which held in Port Harcourt, the Rivers state capital on Tuesday March 2, IgbereTV reports.

The two governors have been in the news as they disagreed over the use of AK-47 rifles by herders.

Recall that on February 12, Governor Mohammed had accused Governor Ortom of championing the campaign to criminalize the Fulani tribe. He also defended the use of AK47 rifles by herdsmen. According to him, the herdsmen deserve to carry rifles as the government has failed in their duty to protect them.

While reacting, Governor Ortom expressed his disappointment at Governor Bala. He went on to accuse the governor of attempting to kill him. He also asked any herder in Benue state who wishes to move around with AK47 rifles to vacate the state and go to Bauchi state.

“Anyone who is not willing to respect the laws of our land should go and meet Bala Mohammed, and there you can carry AK-47, and you’ll not be apprehended,” Governor Ortom had said.

Following the row this caused in the media, the PDP initiated a meeting where both governors met today and resolved their differences and hugged each other.

The leader of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in South East, Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State, the zonal leadership of the PDP, led by Chief Ali Odefa, stakeholders and governorship aspirants of the party in Anambra State, are in a closed-door meeting, at the Government House, Enugu, ahead of November 2021 gubernatorial election in Anambra State, IgbereTV reports.

Former Governors of Ebonyi, Anambra and Imo states, Senator Sam Egwu, Mr. Peter Obi and Rt. Hon. Emeka Ihedioha respectively, are also in attendance.

Operatives of Ogun State Police Command have arrested two men who allegedly gang-raped the 16yrs old daughter of their Co-tenant (name withheld), IgbereTV reports.

According to a statement released by the spokesperson of the state police command, Abimbola Oyeyemi, the suspects Anthony John 35yrs and Jimoh Idowu 21 were arrested following a complaint lodged at owode-Egba divisional headquarters by the victim, who reported that she was at home with her younger siblings at Efunye village via Owode-Egba, when the two suspects, who are living in the same house with them broke into their apartment at about 2:00am and dragged her into Anthony’s room.

"She stated further that the duo knew that her parents had travelled and they capitalized on that to forcefully break into their room, using cloth to cover her mouth after which they took her to Anthony’s room where they took turns to have carnal knowledge of her.

Upon the report, the DPO Owode-egba division, Csp Ediae Mathew quickly dispatched his detectives to the scene where the two suspects were promptly apprehended. On interrogation, the two suspects confessed to the commission of the crime without any sense of remorse.

The victim has been taken to Owode-egba general hospital for medical treatment." the statement in part read

Oyeyemi added that the state Commissioner of Police, Cp Edward Ajogun has ordered the transfer of the suspects to anti-human trafficking and child labour section for further investigation and diligent prosecution.

Umaru Tafidan Argungu, a former Nigerian senator has been arraigned for N419m alleged fraud in Sokoto, IgbereTV reports.

The 61-year-old was arraigned on Monday, March 1, before Justice Mohammed Mohammed of the Sokoto State High Court on one count charge of criminal misappropriation of public funds to the tune of N419, 744, 612. 30 (Four Hundred and Nineteen Million, Seven Hundred and Forty-Four Thousand, Six Hundred and Twelve Naira, Thirty Kobo).

The former Senator who represented Kebbi North in the 6th Senate under the People's Democratic Party (PDP), is alleged to have diverted the said sum which was paid by the Sokoto State government as 40percent equity stake in Hijrah Investment Nigeria Limited, owners of Hijrah Textile Ltd.

According to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, the Sokoto state government had entered into an agreement with the former Senator to buy a 40% stake in his company Hijrah Investment Nigeria Limited in order to create jobs and boost the economy of the state.

However, investigations revealed several withdrawals and transfers from the said account to individuals not remotely connected to the objectives of turning around the company, the EFCC said in a statement.

A visit to the company promises by EFCC investigators showed a company in a severe state of abandonment and dilapidation.

The charge reads: "That you Senator Umar Tafida while being the Chairman of Hijrah Textiles Company Limited and Hijrah Investment Nigeria Limited sometime between 2016 and 2017 at Sokoto within the jurisdiction of the High CoForty-Fourtice Sokoto State, being entrusted with the total sum of N419, 744, 612. 30 (Four Hundred and Nineteen Million, Seven Hundred and Forty Four Thousand, Six Hundred and Twelve Naira, Thirty Kobo) paid by the Sokoto State government representing 40% investment of shareholding in your company to boost the economy of the state, dishonestly misappropriated the money in violation of the mode in which such trust was to be discharged and thereby committed Criminal Breach of Trust contrary to Section 311 of the Penal Code Law CAP 89, Laws of Northern Nigeria and punishable under Section 312 of the same Law".

He pleaded 'not guilty’ to the charge.

Based on his plea, the prosecution counsel, S.H. Sa’ad asked the Court for a date to commence trial while defence counsel, Ibrahim Abdullahi move a verbal motion for the bail of his client.

Justice Mohammed granted the defendant bail in the sum of N50 million (Fifty Million Naira) and two sureties in like sum. The sureties must reside and have property within the jurisdiction of the Court.

The judge further ruled that the defendant's international passport be deposited with the Court.

The case has been adjourned till March 18, 2021, for commencement of trial.

Benue State Govt Releases 210 Cows Seized From Herdsmen After Taking N5M Fine

The Benue state government has released 210 cows seized from herdsmen at Mbala, Makurdi, and Gbajimba in Guma Local Government Area of the state, IgbereTV reports.

The cows were arrested by the state's livestock guards when they were found wandering on the streets, an act that is in violation of the state's 2017 Open grazing law.

The commander of the Benue State Livestock Guards, Linus Zaki, said the cows were returned to the owners after various fines worth N5million in total, were paid. He warned the herdsmen to desist from violating the open grazing prohibition law of 2017 and seek approval for the establishment of ranches.

“We arrested 140 cows in Mbala on February 11, 2021, and 70 cows in Gbajimba on February 16, 2021. Altogether, we are handing over 210 cows to their owners today. We cannot stop implementing the law so the herdsmen must learn to follow the right procedure,” Zaki said.

The release of the cows followed the payment of N2,000 each for the 210 cows with 140 of the animals held for 14 days while 70 of them were held for eight days, amounting to over N5million revenue into the state coffers.

Speaking on behalf of the owners of the cattle, the secretary, Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association, Ibrahim Galma appealed for leniency saying the process of establishing ranches is too technical and scientific for an average Fulani Normad.

Sultan of Sokoto and President-General, Nigerian Supreme Council of Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, has said that not all Fulani herdsmen engage in terrorism.

The Sultan, who stated this yesterday when he visited the headquarters of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) in Abuja, said the insecurity in the country should not be restricted to one particular ethnic group.

He said: “As Muslims, we should not allow people’s talk to get into our head when they call us all sort of names. We have fought, we have told the whole world, not only in Nigeria. In fact, there is nowhere in this world that I haven’t spoken about Islam not being a terrorist religion; from the White House to universities in the United States, to Chatham House in London, I have always stood by this. Of course, we have some bandits among us, but it does not make Islam or Muslims terrorists.

“I am a proud Fulani, but I am not a criminal, bandit or terrorist. I just do my best to the best of my ability.”

He advised Muslims to always behave according to the teaching of Holy Quran and Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad.

The bodies of a couple identified as Ufuoma Atidja and Matilda Aghotor were found in their apartment along NDDC road in Amukpe, Sapele Local Government Area of Delta State, IgbereTV reports.

It was gathered that the remains were discovered on Saturday morning, February 13, after neighbours peeped through the window. The man was allegedly found on the floor and the woman on the bed.

A source who pleaded anonymity told newsmen that the lovers attended a party the previous night.

“They came home late after the party and slept off yesterday, only to wake up this morning and we found them dead.” the source said.

According to the source, Ufuoma and Matilda had just returned to the country last year from an undisclosed overseas’ country and had reportedly moved into the vicinity last December.

“He occasionally uses his vehicle to shuttle between Sapele and Warri route, and he was a lively fellow who was always visible and when neighbours woke up that morning and noticed his vehicle was there and there was no sign of the wife and him, we became worried, his window was opened but when we noticed his door was locked inside, we became curious, that was when we looked through the windows and saw the dead bodies.” the source added.

However, another source said that their deaths may have been as a result of inhaling generator fumes.

“Their generator was put on yesterday when they came back and we are suspecting it must have been the cause of their death."

Spokesperson of the Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Onome Onowakpoyeya has confirmed the incident.

“When the police visited the venue, they prevented us from going in, so the case was not officially reported" she said.

Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested a 31-year-old prophet, Anietie Inyang from Ikot Ebak village, Essien Udim Local Government Area of the state, for allegedly sodomising a 12-year-old boy, IgbereTV reports.

Prophet Anietie Inyang was alleged to have engaged in anal sex with the victim, who lives with his grandmother at Ikot Ada Utor in Afaha Clan also in Essien Udim Local Government Area.

IgbereTV learnt that the suspect was earlier arrested by the Essien Udim Police Division but released on bail without being charged to court and attempts were made to cover up the case.

However, the wife of the Chairman of Essien Udim, Mrs Umoh Gabriel Tony Luke alongside her husband, Anthony Luke got wind of the information and ordered the police to produce the suspect.

He was susbsequently re-arrested and brought to the State Police Headquarters in Ikot Akpan Abia, Uyo. The Akwa Ibom State Sexual and Gender Based Violence Response Unit has taken over the case.
